what are the bicycle helmet laws in ontario canada?

Caryn A

Answer
Canada has some provincial and local helmet laws. Ontario's helmet law for cyclists under 18 took effect in 1995. It was originally to have covered all ages, and there is a bill in parliament now to extend it to do that. There is spirited opposition by a few cyclists there. (see links below) Proponents cite the cost of cyclists' injuries to the national health system, without reference to the much greater cost of treating those injured in cars, a blind spot also found in the US. In March, 2003, the Canadian Institute for Health Information announced that hospitalizations due to cycling-related injuries were down 12.5 per cent between 1997-98 and 2001-02.
The Canadian province of Nova Scotia enacted all-age bicycle helmet legislation in 1997. Toronto University Professor of Epidemiology Dr Mary Chipman published a research paper (PDF 44k) in March 2002 through the Canadian Medical Association Journal: "The data from Australia and now Nova Scotia suggest that legislation increases helmet use but also reduces the numbers of cyclists."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests a 62% reduction in cyclist numbers in Halifax the year after helmet law enactment, with more cyclist injuries recorded than before the law and a nominal reduction in head injuries (8 less head injuries in 1999).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The failure of the helmet law in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario were also exposed in July 2003 by researcher Dorothy Robinson in a paper peer reviewed by pediatrics.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite these failures, Ontario is in 2004 considering legislation for the mandatory wearing of helmets by cyclists of all ages. Read the viewpoint of the Hammer or the opinion of Connie Woodcock from the Toronto

Which bicycle helmet is better?

THE MAZ14

Okay, so I'm wanting to get a new helmet, but i can't decide between the Bontrager Circuit, Giro Savant, Specialized Echelon. So, I am asking for reviews on these helmets, and suggestions. Thank you.

Answer
You would be fine with any of these helmets. The Giro Savant has the best ventilation if that is what your looking for. Giro is a pretty well respected brand. Your going to spending ten extra dollars for the "style" of the Bontrager Circuit. The specialized Echelon is a good helmet with less Ventilation. I would go with the Giro, black.

Whats the best thing you've bought with a dollar this year?

I suppose it doesn't have to be this year, but i'm looking for things that are from a store. If you got something prior to this year or something from a yard sale for a dollar you can include that too.

Answer
This year I bought a tomato plant that ended up growing huge and has probably given us twenty pounds of tomatoes so far and it's still going strong.
Last year I bought a bicycle helmet at a special sale through the fire department. My brother was going mountain biking and borrowed my helmet. He fell and hit his head on a rock. That helmet saved his life. (Of course we had to throw the helmet away after that but it had served it's purpose.)
A few years back my nephew bought a rat for a buck, taught it all kinds of interesting things and won a science contest that helped him get into the college he wanted to go to.
I've got a family member that bought a house for a dollar from a church that wanted the building moved off of it's campus. When the town reviewed the permits they found the house was on the historic register which not only made it more valuable but also dictated that it could not be moved. The family member donated the building back to the church and was able to get a tax credit for charitable donation of almost $20,000. (Too bad that family member is already rich.)

im just getting started mountain biking and i was wondering if the ellsworth truth was a good bike?

Jake

Answer
Heck yeah the Ellsworth Truth is a good bike! Check out reviews online (mtbr.com bicycling.com etc), you'll see how Ellsworth riders love thier bikes.

Ellsworth are not cheap though, they cost a bit more than your average mountain bike. They are serious bikes and if you can afford it, why not? Just save some of that money for bike gear like a good helmet (never go cheap on head protection), padded bike shorts, gloves, socks and shoes.

Good luck, stay safe and have fun.

I had a seizure last week and in the ER they told me I wasn't allowed to drive for the next 6th months, I live on my own and there is no good public transportation near my house, so I'm assuming you can see how this would be a major problem. Does anyone know if mopeds fall under this law?

Answer
The DMV medical review board requires you to be seizure free for 6 months until your license can be reinstated.
You need a license to operate a motor vehicle.
A scooter is considered a motor vehicle.

Switch to a bicycle for transportation - and wear a bicycle helmet.
Riding a bicycle is good exercise, they get great gas mileage and can almost travel the same speed as a 50cc scooter.

What's the difference between populism, democracy, utilitarianism, realism and pragmatism?

Recession

Aren't they all based on
"agreement" "majority" "whatever works"?

Answer
This is a very loaded question. Entire books have been written on these things. But they're not based on the same thing.

Populism: any group's or party's attempt to appear to be, consist of, or speak on behalf of "the people" -- a deliberately ambiguous term designed in a horoscope-like manner so that it ostensibly includes everybody. Populism happens, for example, when a multi-millionaire politician is shown snowboarding, riding a bicycle, or speaking to an auto-workers union while wearing bluejeans and a construction helmet.

Utilitarianism: "good" defined as the greatest benefit to the greatest number of people . . . but who decides what the "majority" is? White people? The "middle class"? See Jeremy Bentham or John Stuart Mill. The minority is expected to sit back and take it on this one. It is a slightly more "honest" and less pandering approach than populism.

Democracy: rule by citizens. None of this "representation" and Electoral College stuff. Most people agree that, in a State as large as the US, democracy is too "inefficient." That is exactly why many people think the US is too big, including many who did not want the Constitution to begin with (i.e. Patrick Henry).

Pragmatism: in US history, this has more to do with judicial procedure that population numbers. Rather than relying on precedence, the courts would assess how a modern context affects the situation and the ruling; whatever precedence might exist could be out-of-date and would no longer apply. American conservatism would probably call this "judicial activism," but that is unfair. It is merely another type of Judicial Review practiced since Judge Marshall in the early 1800s.

Realism: I'm not totally sure what you mean by this one. But I think it has a condescending tone; it pretends as if there is only one perspective or "reality." Conservatism always has the benefit of appearing to be "realistic," because it is inherently status quo; but that does not mean that conservatism is always correct, fair, just, or whatever. "Realism" give the illusion that it is somehow outside of or beyond ideology or agendas.
