Do you guys travel by bicycle nowadays?

Lovely Rit

I'm 19 years old, live in the metro area and there really aren't any sidewalks anywhere!
I want to buy a bicycle and start traveling around in it because I want to save gas money.
Do any of you guys bicycle nowadays?
Literally NO ONE bicycles where I live since there aren't any sidewalks.
How would I travel?
On the road?
Do you guys wear helmets?
It wouldn't be a sports bicycle just a normal bicycle with a basket in the front.
It's about 100 degrees F outside, could I wear a hat?
Any tips for me?

Answer
I do NOT own a car. I travel by bicycle everywhere! Yes, I wear a helmet. Yes, I ride on the streets because that's where "vehicles" belong. A bicycle is a legal street vehicle in all 50 states, Canada & all over Europe. Get a good, well ventilated helmet. Ride in the early, early morning or evening. Do NOT wear a hat that traps in heat. Buy a good set of bicycle lights for traveling after dark or before sunrise. http://ecom1.planetbike.com/3047.html

What are the rules fod bicycles on roadways without sidewalks?

LINDA D

Answer
Fod or FOR bicycles?

A) Bicycles shouldn't be on sidewalks. Bicycles are legal "vehicles" with the same rights, duties & responsibilities as any motorized vehicle.

B) Bicyclists should stay as far to the right "as safe". SAFE does NOT mean being a "gutter bunny" - hugging the curb. Safe means riding AWAY from the curb a good 4 to 5 feet at ALL times. 1) You get SEEN by motorists. 2) You avoid gutter seems, road debris, pot holes left by parked cars, etc.

C) Safe means going around parked cars leaving 5 feet of space or so - away from the "door zone" should some fool not look first before opening that car door.

D) Safe means - in a narrow lane situation (at or less than 13' wide) "control" or TAKE the lane. Ride right smack dab down the middle. Minimum safe lane width for both a motorist & a cyclist is 14' wide.

E) Safe means - even with a so-called "designated bike lane" available, if there's an obstruction - you have EVERY right to get OUT of that bike lane provided you first yield to motorists approaching from the rear. Get a good helmet mounted mirror & you can see them coming.

considering health care?

Will bungee jumping be covered? Will persons required to take specific classes and receive certification for certain sports? And will parent be put in prison for not providing their children with bicycle safety helmets which accidents cause increased cost for the community to take on as a burden?

Answer
No, no and no to answer your questions.

FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.

FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage.

That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

I think the last link is of most use in addressing your concerns.

How much should I expect to spend on a bicycle to commute to work?

xaptation

I'm going to be starting a new job a mile and a half away from where I live. I'm thinking abut getting a bicycle. How much should I expect to spend? Include helmet, lights, etc.

Answer
ESTIMATED COSTS:
helmet $25+ (USA sold helmets are all tested / approved)
lights $50+ (probably not good idea to be cheap here)
bike $50-150 (used 10-speed road/mtn bike)
spare tubes: $3 or less ( always have spares )
patch kit + lever: $2 + $3 ( master this to save $$$ )
puncture resistant tires: $50+ / pair
U-lock: $25-40 (get newer models from kryptonite brand)

look to spend ~ $250-350

OPTIONAL (suggested)
general bike maintenance manual: $10
mini multi-tool: $10-20
drink cage + bottle: $12

SHOPPING (saving money):
buying a used bike: craigslist.org (great site for locals ~ free)
buying all other stuff: performance bike (retail store nationwide)

ebay is also a great place to compare prices when shopping at retail or bargaining with sellers on craigslist

if you plan to buy a new bike, usually buy it from a local bike shop than a retail; retailers tend to be less personal and won't help you if you have problems later. A good store might help you on craigslist!

note: better quality bikes are easier to take apart, therefore, easier to maintain / fix - cheap bikes are mostly proprietary and need a lot of "custom" parts most of the time.

Can I ride a motor assisted bicycle in Tasmania without a license?

If I have a suspended license (DUI), live in Tasmania, can I ride a motor assisted bicycle?
I have a suspended license for DUI.
I live in Tasmania
And I need a way to get around without getting booked.

I THINK I'm right to say that I am allowed to ride a "motor assisted" bicycle, so long as it is not over 200watts power... and I wear a helmet etc. But I have been told that I will get booked if I ride on the road because it has a motor and if it's on the road it's classed as a motor vehicle.

Does anyone know if this is true? Can I ride this bike without being booked?

Thanks!

Answer
I only know USA laws and statutes on motorized bicycles/mopeds. Many places consider them to be the same thing. 50 states is enough for me to remember. The laws vary greatly from state to state and country to country. You should be able to go online and look up the statutes.

Does anyone feel that the USA has no right putting missiles in Germany?

emily Rose

Isn't this what the NATO and the United Nations are responsible for? Are you tired of the USA always sticking their nose into things that should be dealt with by already in place by the United Nations. Do you think Bush again jumped into putting the American people second. And not even considering the ramification it may mean how the world looks at us. Isn't this how we ended in Iraq, Bush satisfying a vendetta Saddam had out on Bush Sr. life. And lied about WMD's to try to make his case, even before the United Nations had a chance to work.

Answer
I think it's up to the Germans really. As a random musing, I read somewhere that the Israelis thought that Patriot Missiles ( of 1991 Gulf War vintage) did not actually work (ie intercept incoming missiles) , which could somewhat defeat the object of the whole exercise, really, unless they have improved since then.

A part of me always regards a lot of these weapons as scams against the taxpayer, really, especially the really expensive ones. You know, the ones that someone aims at you from 2,000,000,000 kilometres squared away from you, then it arrives, knocks on your front door, goes upstairs and looks for you under hiding under the bed. The ones that cost £34455503283-59p to blow up someone driving to work in Iraq.

A lot of these systems are a bit like building pyramids, except the Egyptians did not demolish the pyramids after thirty years and then bill the taxpayer for another lot.

I do wonder, and I am not an expert, what use are nuclear weapons and hi-tech weaponry in general, against people who use bicycles and Datsun pickup trucks, communicate by passing notes to each other? and use automatic rifles and suicide belts? I would have thought you would have needed more old-fashioned infantry with big boots and helmets, the sort of people who donât want to join the Army in the UK as the salaries are so poor, perhaps as much of the money has gone on pyramid-like nuclear weapons that will be dismantled, God willing, in thirty years time.

What to do when your bike path forces you to use the crosswalk?

bicycle helmets usa on Bike Helmet coloring page | Super Coloring

Jake F

There is a "bike path" but have to cross a lot of intersections.

Cars are allowed to right-turn on red.

Forced to use the crosswalk unless I do something like jump the curb into the street to be on the other side of the "right turners" which is not always possible or safe.

Or annoy people by shining my helmet light in their eyes...

Presence of a bike path means I can't be in the road and I wouldnt want to.

(because nobody else does around here, and roads such as this especially)

If I sat at the light long enough for it to be clear, I would never cross. Not like I am racing to get home but just want to get crossing over with.

I suppose crossing at a different time of day would be possible.

And yet it is the closest thing around here to infrastructure...

Ride totally in the road? Nobody else does. I do on certain roads.

Answer
Your quote, "Presence of a bike path means I can't be in the road and I wouldn't want to."

Your bike path or a designated "bicycle lane"? If you don't learn how to ride properly on the streets - as a "vehicle" should - you'll be a scared little chicken all your life. Yes, a bicycle is designated as a "vehicle" and is legally allowed on streets & roads everywhere - except Interstate Highways & other "limited access roads". Not the answer you want to hear, but the truth. Got a Cycling Savvy class in your area? Take ALL the classes. More links below...

"Ride totally in the road?" YES! It's the LAW. In most places, it's ILLEGAL to ride on sidewalks.

What bicycle should I get if I wanna start cycling?

Spencer

I just graduated college and want to start cycling but don't know anything about good bikes. Can someone help me out on ideas for new gear that's good for a beginner cyclist that's a reasonable cost. If you have any other advice for a newbie please don't hold back. Thanks in advance!
Sorry I wasn't as specific in my question. Reasonable cost of under $1,000. I want to start cycling on the paved streets.

Answer
Define "reasonable cost". $500? $1,000? $2,000?

Good bikes of any brand or style start around $500. Good road bikes around $700. What bike to get? Depends on "Where & How" you plan on riding. Read this..."Bicycles: How to Choose"
