How old were your children/child when you took their stablisers off their bikes?

I am just wondering as my son is 6 in june and next weekend i am thinking about taking his stablisers off his bike i am a single mum so planning something like this is huge as i have a 4,3, and a 18 day old as well so any tips or advice would be really great i have helmets and shin pads, elbow pads e.t.c but do i take one stabliser off at a time or both e.t.c

Answer
With my first son we took them off at around 7 yrs. I don't think he benefitted from having the stabilisers. They weren't teaching him anything and he was just using the bike like a kind of unstable trike. He learned after we took them off, although it took a while. So with my second son we didn't put the stabilisers back on, and he learned reasonably quickly.

How you approach things with your child depends on whether or not you think he is learning anything from the stabilisers. I have heard of people taking off one stabiliser but I think it's better just to take them both off. The only other thing I can suggest is to get him out on the bike to try as often as possible once you have taken them off, and don't let him give up. Everyone is different in the the time they take to learn to ride a bike but everyone can learn it.

A word of caution for your next two children. Since they are close in age, it may be tempting to get them learning at the same time. While this may be more fun for them, you must remember that the younger one will probably take longer, and must not be allowed to become discouraged if the older one gets there first. That happened to a friend of mine. Her brother, 18 months older, learned while she was still struggling and as soon as he learned, she gave up.

Good luck.

What would be a good starting sport motorcycle?

I am considering buying a sport bike. I have been riding on my friends 250 and getting used to it for the past 6 or 7 months before I could save up enough money to get my own. I would appreciate any advice at all. Thank you for any help.

Answer
A 250 is a good size to start, except it can't cruise at highway speeds. So it depends on how you see yourself riding. If it's just around town, with maybe the occasional weekend ride on back roads, a 250 is fine. But if you want to do 10 miles or more on the freeway you really want at least 500cc and 650 would be better. That's a little bigger/heavier than 250 but not all that much.

250s available in the US are Kawasaki Ninja 250 and Honda CBR 250. Neither of them are real sportbikes, they are 'sporty'. REAL sportbikes are very serious single-purpose machines, not for beginners. Other good trainers (larger) are Suzuki GS500 and SV 650, Kawasaki Ninja 500 and 650, Honda 599, etc.

I'd say you want to start on a used bike because you're likely to be hard on your first bike. All the Japanese mfgrs are very good, a good deal for the money. I think Honda is the best, but I'm prejudiced 'cos I own one.. 8^) A good used one should be around $2500-3000. If you buy carefully, then after six months or a year you can sell this 'old beater' for about what you paid for it, and by then you'll have a much better idea of what you really want.

Be sure to save money in the budget for helmet, jacket, gloves, just as a minimum. Also the MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) beginner's course is a good idea. They don't teach you to ride, you learn that yourself by riding. They teach you some indispensable safety habits to keep you alive while you learn.

Even if you regularly wear a helmet when on the skateboard/bike etc. Please quickly answer the small questions below. It would help me greatly.

- What is the biggest reason you'd rather not wear a helmet?
- What would you want to see implemented in helmets? Do you want "features" in your helmets or just comfort and protection?
- What could current conventional helmets improve or stop doing?
- What types of colors you like on your helmet? Any rough design you'd prefer over other ones?

Feel free to add anything else you'd think is helpful feedback. I'm trying to come up with unique high-end but affordable helmet designs, and any help I get here is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
- What is the biggest reason you'd rather not wear a helmet?
There is NO good reason for not wearing a helmet. A full 45% of all cycling accidents are SOLO falls. No one else or nothing else involved. http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg
There are a plethora of good, well ventilated helmets on the market at reasonable prices. Most people who don't like helmets claim they are too hot. They shouldn't be shopping at Wally World for a helmet! Giro makes lots of good ones. http://www.giro.com/us_en/products/men/helmets/road.html

- What would you want to see implemented in helmets? Do you want "features" in your helmets or just comfort and protection?
Would like to see a (rear view) helmet mirror, such as this one, in every box containing a helmet. http://safezonemirror.com/

- What could current conventional helmets improve or stop doing?
They could improve those crappy ones sold at discount stores. That or just quit making them. Maybe find a way to install a Serfas Thunderbolt Taillight on the helmet. Damn near blinding. https://www.serfas.com/products/view/669/referer:products%7Cindex%7Clights%7Cusb-lights

- What types of colors you like on your helmet? Any rough design you'd prefer over other ones?
Plain old white always works well. Easily seen by motorist in daylight hours.

Why do bicycle helmets look so uncool when you are just casually riding?

The Captai

Like i get why people wear them on high speed bike races, or on big 15 mile rides.
And I do care about safety and stuff,

but why do helmets just look so darn uncool when riding around the neighborhood?

Answer
You know what like gets to me? Like when someone starts a sentence with "like". Like hey man...if you think 15 miles is a "big ride" - like you've got a lot to learn about cycling & the distances a good cyclist can cover.

Like in my neighborhood - it looks dorky for anyone not to be wearing one. Like a full forty-five percent of all cycling accidents are "solo falls" - no one else involved. Like, only 18% involve a motor vehicle, 17% involve another bicycle. Even 4% involve running into a parked car!

Like...get it now man?

So I am in need of some shoes and a helmet desperately and I am also looking into getting disk brakes for my Trek 6500 about how much should I spend on Shoes and a helmet i mean are more expensive shoes really that much better.???

Answer
If they are your initial pair of shoes,... honestly... don't spend too much... maybe $100 at the MOST. You can find some pretty good deals sometimes. Expensive shoes vary... some are lighter in weight but not strong while others are the other way around. Try 661's or even some PricePoint shoes.... they are good and decently priced and decent quality too. On a helmet... spend some money on it... at least $40-100. With helmets... price makes a difference on how many slots for ventilation you have as well as the material. the really cheap helmets are... well... cheap. Bell and Giro are good companies with various price ranges. As for the disc brakes for the 6500... if you plan on keeping the bike for a while... go with hydraulic brakes... Hayes and Avid are a good way to start... Magura and Hope are a little more advanced. If you think you might buy another bike in the future... get mechanical disc brakes or leave the bike as is. You could also look at replacing the fork if you want to keep the frame for a long time. If not... again... leave as is.

mountain bike related. several questions in one.?

vasili p

I have no idea what bike i should get. i thought i wanted an all mountain or a hardtail but now i'm intrested in dh too. i would use it to commute, ride trails, and possible do light dirt jumping and urban assault/ trial stuff.
can you dh on a hardtail? i've riden a 1980-somethin giant iguana with no suspension and i'd like to stick to hardtails but if there is a cheap-er dh or xc bike i'll try that.

i'm looking for a bike that isn't outrageously exspensive, durable, and has a nice front shock (lock out prefered) and disk brakes.
what bike would do that?

also what is the purpose/use of a full-face helmet. why do bikers wear them?
and how does the 661 pressure suit work? if it makes you all stiff, aren't you more likely to brake something?

another thing is i'm trying to learn three tricks: wheelie, stoppie/ endo and bunny hop.
i almost got stoppies but still kinda weak. any tips on how to do these tricks? also my bike frame feels strange in that it seems a bit long from handle bars to seat post. is it my imagination? or are old frames just strange?

Answer
Holy crap... You should check out the specialized p2 or the giant stp if you want a dirt jump bike. If you're doing extremely light DH you could make it down on a hardtail, but if you want to start racing or riding gnarlier trails, your gonna wanna invest some money into a real downhill bike, or at least something that would be a little smoother. The Santa Cruz Heckler and giant trance (set up properly) are great bikes that would work for light DH and jumping.

Full face helmets simply give you more protection. They aren't really necessary for dirt jumping. I only use mine at races or when im doing gnarlier trails. The pressure suit is basically designed to prevent you from breaking your neck, they prevent your neck from bending the wrong way. It'll also protect you from small bruises, i guess, but those are just a part of riding. I used a pressure suit at one bike race, they aren't really necessary for beginners though.

For the tricks you wanna learn, look for videos on youtube, it's too hard to explain. Mostly, just practice

Helmets are hot and dorky looking. On a bicycle only type of crash they improve your odds considerably of not receiving a traumatic head injury. During a car/bicycle accident a helmet might make a difference and keep the rider alive.

Should I buy a motorcycle?

Chris M

I am thinking of buying myself a motorcycle. Not a superbike, but a Ducati GT1000 (retro styling). I have always thought motorcycles were awesome ever since my uncle took me on a ride on his Ducati when I was growing up.

What I'm asking is this: Do you think it's a smart idea to get a motorcycle? But be specific.

Issues like safety are my prime concern, as being dead isn't really in my list of things to do. I'm also looking into a motorcycle for gas mileage saving, and possibly a drop in insurance payments if I make it my main source of transportation. I have absolutely no experience in anything other than automobiles so I don't know.

Give me some pros, cons, and possibly statistics that may change my mind. I know motorcycles are supposed to get into more fatal accidents, but how often do fatal accidents actually happen? I've been driving a car for 6 years, and I have never even gotten close to being in an accident.

Also, if you think the bike I might be getting is no good, give me some other options that are better. I'm looking at around $10k.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Some of the answerers before seem to think that anything Ducati must be a hot superbike. The GT1000 is a standard. It's sporty but luxurious, like a Mercedes two-seater. It's a -very- beautiful bike, and if you owned one and asked me if I'd like to ride it a few miles I'd say yes without much thought. 8^) This is one of those machines where people who know nothing about motorcycles will say 'Wow, what a beautiful motorcycle!'

But it's not a great beginner's bike. Just too big and heavy! It's not too much power--you can handle the power if you just act like a grownup. And it's nice to have some power in reserve. The problem is the weight and size. A 1000cc bike is just really big and unwieldly!

Anyway, you don't want to learn on your dream bike. You'll drop it and feel really bad. Ducatis don't drop cheap. 8^< My advice would be to start on a Japanese bike, 500-650cc, maybe 5-10 years old--old enough to be depreciated ,new enough that you can still get parts. After six months or a year, you can sell this old beater for about what you paid, and by then you'll have a better idea of what you really want. For $10,000 you can buy 3 or 4 starter bikes.

Motorcycling is more dangerous than driving a car. You have more of a chance of getting into an accident, and of course the consequences are more serious. You should know that half of all M/C accidents happen to riders who have less than a year's experience. (My dad said nobody should be allowed to ride a motorcycle until they've been riding 5 years. 8^) ). This is not to scare you or discourage you, just to make you aware that safety should be your 1st priority. And from what I see here in California, I'd guess that young men suffering from 'testosterone poisoning' skew the statistics. If you've driven a car for 6 years with no accidents, you probably have a better chance than the average guy.

So anyway, save room in the budget for a good helmet, jacket and gloves, all motorcycle-purposed. Take the MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation). They don't teach you to ride, you learn that on your own, but they teach you some valuable safety habits to keep you alive while you learn. If you never rode a bicycle, you should start on one of those, at least to learn to balance and steer.

My two motorcycles are my standard transportation. I have a car but I only use it when it rains or when I need to carry something big. In good weather, motorcycles are all you need to get yourself around. They don't save that much money, because parts are more expensive, tires only last 10k miles. I know it's more dangerous, but riding my bikes is also one of the most enjoyable things in my life. I'm willing to take the risk.

Ducati is famous for its 90-degree V-twin engine. A good Japanese bike, not equivalent but similar, is the Suzuki SV-650 (or the touring version, the V-Strom). You could learn on a used one, then trade up to the Ducati. All the Japanese mfgrs are very good--well-engineered, reliable, long-lived. Not nearly as beautiful and sexy as a Ducati, but a better deal for the money. If you just gotta have a Ducati, see it as something to work up to.

Answer
Personally rather than V-brakes I would go for disc brakes. The reasoning behind this is that the rims are going to get wet and muddy thereby decreasing their efficiency. 3-4" travel on the front-forks is about right. Remember to get the all-important lid (safety helmet), gloves and other protective equipment - doing it for fun is one thing, competing is another. Be safe.

Answer
All mountain bikes can go downhill; you don't need a different bike for going up and then a different one for going down.

Your question should be more like "Is my bike tough enough to endure unusual use and abuse?" Not all bikes have the same quality and performance.

The bike you posted clearly state that it is an "entry level mountain bike," meaning that it is for "normal use," not designed and built to take an unusual amount of punishment.

On the meanwhile make sure to wear the helmet and other protective clothing, and check the bike for cracks or any other damage. If the bike is damaged then use common sense by not abusing it.

In Columbus, Ohio, they are considering making it illegal for kids under 18 to not have a helmet on when wearing a bike.

Well that's all fine and well I suppose... except that motorcyclists here in Columbus aren't even required to wear helmets!!!

Thoughts...?
Yeah, good point. I don't know. My dad rides a Harley... doesn't wear a helmet... probably won't unless they say he has to...

But I have nothing to worry about as long as little Billy on his training wheels is safe! ;)

Answer
Well obviously this situation has come about because of the different lobbying power of the motorcyclists and the kids (kids have none!). It could be a trojan horse law to make the motorbike situation look silly, and ease the introduction of compulsory motorbike helmets (there's always a bureaucrat who has an orgasm when the road toll goes down a bit).

The philosophical argument is that adults can make their own decisions, but we as a society have to protect children.

My own argument, as someone who ride both bicycles and motorbikes, is that motorbike helmets should be compulsory: lots of kids ride minibikes and need the example, it's VERY easy to die crashing a motorcycle, even at low speed, if you don't have a helmet. Evolution designed the human body to crash at running speed or less: about 20km/h. By the same token, it's actually very difficult to die crashing a motorbike if you have a helmet, at least up to speeds of 100+ km/h, depending on the circumstances of course.

Riding a bicycle on the other hand is far less dangerous and although a helmet's not a bad idea, it should not be compulsory. The helmet is an impediment, and expense, something to not lose and to carry around, all for a small gain in safety. Not worth it.

Socially, public health has to pay for dead and maimed motorcyclists. The 'my choice my freedom' argument has some power, but if helmet laws were repealed tomorrow in my town, the emergency room would fill up with (even more) smashed up motorcyclists. Best if this doesn't happen.

Your spiritual well being .
There are millions of these therapists around the world and people travel from far and wide to them .Billions of people have been helped from these therapies .

And like all therapists there are good and not so good and some specialise in certain conditions like the physical and some do the mental etc .It is important to find the therapist which suits your complaint .
But you must bear this in mind all healing comes under what is known as spiritual law =you will be healed to the extent that you have earnt .ie your karma âthe reaping and sowing of all deeds done 0ften from past lives .And what you are doing for the service of others in this life .
Thus you may easily two people with the same complaint go for healing and only one of them gets healed .which is why voluntary work is vital for your healing.

You must Find good therapists in your area /and a good spiritualist church who often give their services for free as an offering to the divine .

All you do is usually sit down in a comfortable chair and relax and think good loving thoughts âthe healer may or may not place their hands upon you .That depends on how they are working .

You can even put your names healing books where believe it or not healing is sent to you by thought and that can be very powerful as well.

Harry Edwards recalled the case of a young man who, accompanied by a lady, was brought to me for healing. He was in great pain and eaten-up with arthritis. As the healing proceeded, so his pains left him, and his joints began to loosen and become free. When I had finished treating him, it was a real delight to see how wonderfully glad he was to be able to use his legs, feet, arms and hands again... and then he told me: "When I came here, I was convinced no one could help me, and I came only to please my Aunt, who brought me."

You worked a miracle with his father when he was very ill 1983-84 when I wrote to you, but you will be pleased to know he is now working for the Council and lives a fairly normal life.

I's report is complete - he is 100% fit and will have no trouble in resuming his sporting activities -considering the first reports, this is a miracle. I do not know how I would have managed without your wonderful help.

You and the late Harry Edwards helped me so often and indeed I am still pressing on 18 years after I was expected to die from my last bout of cancer.

I wrote to ask for healing for my sister who was to undergo an operation for aneurysm in the aorta. Her operation was very successful. After 1 day in intensive care and 2 days in progressive care she was back in her own room and has done extremely well. She was allowed home after 7 days when she had been told to expect to be in hospital for 10 to 15 days. Everyone was amazed at her recovery and the surgeon told her she had been a perfect patient. I feel sure the absent healing and our prayers were to a great extent responsible for this wonderful recovery and I thank you most sincerely for your help.

I thought perhaps you would like to have a record of the people you have helped during the time I have been sending reports. M.L. -angina, complete recovery. D. L. -duodenal ulcer, complete healing. B.L. - Angina, complete recovery. P.D. - Leukaemia - apparent full recovery.

On behalf of my mother, daughter and myself may I thank you for the lovely day at your Sanctuary last Tuesday. My mother is so much better it is truly amazing. She can stretch out her arms and even raise them to her head and her walking is much stronger. My daughter was very impressed, too. 1141/6

I am a 25 years old woman, and would like to take my bike for rides around my neighboor and go errands around. I would like some tips or warnings what could do to be safe and do the right things here in Texas.
I cannot take a drive licences, because I don't have rights so I want to stick with my bicycle!

Answer
Use a bicycle helmet, wear bright colors, get a basket for carrying things, take a good lock and lock both wheels and lock it to something strong, follow the same rules that cars have to use, don't trust any cars to wait at stop signs, wear crash gloves, make sure your bike is in good condition-good brakes. Do not ride the wrong way against the traffic flow. Take the less busy side roads even if it is longer distance to go somewhere.Be alert for broken glass and bad holes in the road. Watch out for everyone all the time.Ride with a friend if you can. Do not ride after dark because you will be invisible! Start keeping a record of your distances traveling. Go to the library and read everything you can find about biking. It is a great way to travel just stay alert all the time like a bird does.

I live in ROCKVILLE CENTRE NY on LONGISLNAD. If you know of any sporting goods stores where i could get a helmet...thankss

Answer
Are you going to be doing rec/fitness skating (along streets, trails, in a rink) or agressive (jumps, grinding, spins)?

If you are doing rec/fitness, you can use a bicycle helmet. You can get that anywhere, even Target, Kmart, or Walmart. More expensive helmets from a sporting goods store tend to have more air flow to keep you cool.

If you are doing agressive, you want a "multisport" helmet. They protect the sides and back of the head better.

You should be able to get either type of helmet at Dick's Sporting goods, according to their web site there is one in Garden city (http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/corp/index.jsp?page=storeLocator&zip=11570)
There is a Sports Authority store in Westbury(http://www.sportsauthority.com/corp/index.jsp?page=storeLocator&zip=11570)

Is there a better/easier way to...?

DIEING FOR ANSWERS :D

Answer
Well, I have a definite way to achieve exactly what you're asking for, but, you can only start from home, since it's serious bicycling on bicycles that you can only get at a real bicycle shop (as opposed to WalMart, KMart, Target or the likes), with toe clips or similar device on your pedals, lycra shorts, jersey and bicycling shoes, and helmet recommended. If you do serious bicycling with that equipment, you'll have a very flat stomach, and very nice legs, an excellent heart rate and blood pressure. But, you can only start at home, and return there. The bicycle shop you buy your stuff from probably has a bicycle club you can join and ride with other knowledgeable cyclists who can help you exercise best. Oh, and be sure you have water bottles on your bicycle. Water is a MUST. That kind of exercise can lead you dehydrated very fast if you don't have the water with you. It's a lot of fun. I've done it for decades and have ridden for thousands of miles, alone and in clubs. Have fun. God Bless you.

I own a store that sells skateboards, scooters, and mopeds along with their related accessories. I am not doing well in sales and would like to know what else can I sell that will appeal to the customers between 13 to 40 years old.

Answer
If you sell skateboards you could also sell skates and bicycles; safety equipments like helmets and so on. Also sport drinks and water. Brand sport clothing, t-shirts, sport bags, caps (kids love any junk with some fancy logo).

You could aslo ask your customers for some input on what they would like to see.

Most importantly you need to do some advertising.

In California, what is the penalty for getting a citation for not wearing a bicycle helmet when I'm 16?

today me and my friend pulled over by a cop because we weren't wearing our bike helmets, and he gave us both citations. he said that we would get a letter in the mail from the court telling us what we would do, and for us to show the ticket to our parents. what happens? what is the penalty? what is the court going to make me do?

Answer
To answer your question:
Youth Bicycle Helmets: Minors
California Vehicle Code 21212. (a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.
(b) Any helmet sold or offered for sale for use by operators and passengers of bicycles, nonmotorized scooters, skateboards, or in-line or roller skates shall be conspicuously labeled in accordance with the standard described in subdivision (a) which shall constitute the manufacturer's certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable safety standards.

(c) No person shall sell, or offer for sale, for use by an operator or passenger of a bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, or in-line or roller skates any safety helmet which is not of a type meeting requirements established by this section.

(d) Any charge under this subdivision shall be dismissed when the person charged alleges in court, under oath, that the charge against the person is the first charge against that person under this subdivision, unless it is otherwise established in court that the charge is not the first charge against the person.

Is it safe to wear a horseback riding helmet when riding your bike?

Basically just what I said. My riding instructor said that it might be, because riding helmets cover more of your head than bike helmets, plus they're usually made to be more durable and protective like.

Answer
I don't know how vented they are, but they will certainly protect you just fine! And they are infinitely better than nothing.

What do you think of wearing an equestrian helmut instead of a bike helmut?

moxie_slac

Bike helmuts are horribly, horribly ugly. Do you have any other alternate suggestions?
I would prefer to space helmut style of old to the sporty looking versions out now, actually. But then I'm not seeking fashion advice from a group of people who wear lycra, I was only seeking information on the safety perceptions. Thanks anyway, kids.

Answer
Ah fashion.

It does get in the way of protecting your brain...

Bike helmets are specifically designed for the sport. One feature, the venting keeps your head cool. They are designed with bicycle motion, and collision with specific hard objects in mind. Equestrian helmets are good, and are likewise designed and tested for a specific task and hazards.

I would keep trying to find a bike helmet you can tolerate. They have come a long, long way from the "mushroom" or "bubble" designs of the past.

Let the rest of your body project whatever image (sexy) you are looking for. A tight body in a well chosen outfit, WITH a bike helmet goes a long way in my book.

I personally wouldn't trust my melon to an equestrian helmet, but that's me.

I live in the city and just want a bike to get exercise. I would rather a bike under $100 but I'm willing to spend some more, just as long as it isn't going to kill my wallet. I'm not to sure what exactly to look for but I want to make sure that the bike has everything that belongs on it and that it's of good quality. I rather not have it fall apart right away.
So any tips on what brands to look for or just what to look for in general would be great.

Answer
The bike is comfortable and can be adjusted to fit your height. The gears and brake controls are easy for you to use. Spare parts are readily accessible in any well stocked bicycle store, you were offered and took a test ride before purchasing. It fits in your budget,

Tell bicycle store owner what surfaces or terrain you will cover ( grass, trails, pavement, etc) Will you be on hilly terrain or generally flat? How many miles per week will you ride?

Check Bicycling Magazine for product reviews, ask advice from seasoned riders, join a local bicycling club for friendly advice.

Save your skull....buy a well made and certified helmet !

Why are car driving people so incredibly lazy and unfit?

World Peac

The UK is very unfit and congested by Volkswagens,
BMW, AUDI, Mercedes and Porsche 9-11 types.

So why do UK people blame each other so much
for their own bad habits and plain laziness?

Why don't the people learn to walk, to ride bicycles
and dammed well get fit so they can be happy?

Are they victims of a government conspiracy to
force everyone to buy a car and drive?

The same question applies to the USA and Greece
and all other car infested countries of moaners who
are simply too lazy to walk or get on their bikes.

I mean just look at Egypt, another place full up with cars,
why not just ban cars from Cairo?

The Cairo Congestion charge could solve the Egyptian
economic crises in 5 minutes!

And investment in the Railways, paid for by congestion
charging would create millions of good local jobs.
Is Congestion charging the Great way to cut income tax and restart the economy?

Answer
Lots of reasons. Besides the obvious, bicycles are not great on 50 mile commutes or in nasty weather. I used to commute by bicycle, up to a 12 mile commute. I was a strong rider (Saturday rides with my friend averaged 80 miles in hills) and had the young man's notion of my own immortality. I have bicycle commuted in freezing rain and in 118 F heat.

The problem is that automobile commuting is much more sensible. While commuting on my bicycle I have had garbage and bottles thrown at me and been deliberately run off the road. Another bicycle commuter in my building at the time was hit in the back of the helmet with a baseball bat as he rode to work. I have been on a bicycle club ride in which one rider was killed and another's neck broken. Bicycles are wonderful things to get out and regenerate our spirits but they have serious weaknesses as basic transportation.

Hi, i hope these links are of use for you

I hate to sound vain,but...does anyone know of a bicycle helmet that is low profile, functional, AND cute?

desertfair

Answer
Well, if you like the skate helmet styling, you should check out the Giro Makai or Flak helmets....they're cheap ($20 to $40) and they come in some "girl" colors, too. They look pretty cool....I have two of them (in non-girl colors) that I use for urban riding. There are lots of other skate lids from several manufacturers.....lots of colors and designs on them, too. Check www.jensonusa.com or www.danscomp.com for choices.

If you want a regular helmet, the Bell Metro and Giro Xen are cool and seem to fit your desires. The Xen is expensive, but worth it.....you can find model year closeouts for $60 to $90 but the normal price is around $120.

EDIT: Ok, now those Nutcase helmets in the post below mine are just COOL! The correct link is www.nutcasehelmets.com .....and I'm glad he shared that company! :o)

Facts about Monster Energy Drinks?

em.

I need to know who created Monster energy drinks and when they were created. and maybe some other interesting facts about it if you know them? thank you!

Answer
Marketed and distributed by Hansen Natural Corporation, a NASDAQ listed company of Corona, California. Though Monster Energy is not widely advertised in the media it receives a large amount of recognition from its sponsorship of various sporting events. Hansen Natural Corporation announced a distribution agreement with Anheuser-Busch in the U.S. and Grupo Jumex in Mexico. Hansen Natural Corporation has recently announced a distribution deal with PepsiCo Canada. On November 10, 2008, the distribution of Monster turned over to Coca-Cola Enterprises, Coca-Cola United, and other Coca-Cola bottlers in many markets. Contracts with existing distributors were bought out in these markets. In late 2009 or early 2010 Monster Energy will expand their market and release their products to other countries including Germany. It is distributed in Australia by Schweppes as Coca-Cola Amatil manufactures Mother energy drink, which is an exclusive energy drink sold only in Australia and New Zealand.

Monster Energy has many endorsements with sportspeople. The list includes; Rob Dyrdek, a professional skater, who is often shown drinking Monster and wearing his Monster Energy shirts on his television show. He owns a car known as the Monster Mobile, which was purchased for Dyrdek; Rupert Davies, professional snowboarder;monster nitro 12 0z

Greg Hancock, a former World Speedway Champion; Paul Tracy, a former Champ Car now IRL driver, who sports the Monster logo on his hats and helmet; Jenson Button the Formula One driver and 2009 World Champion, sported the "M" Monster logo on his new crash helmet from the 2009 British Grand Prix onwards; Jamie Whincup, the Australian V8 Supercar Champion, wears Monster colours on his crash helmet; Dean Kearney, the Irish drift driver who competes in the Prodrift series; Ken Block, the American rally driver; Ricky Carmichael wore a Monster Energy helmet when he raced motocross and now that he is into racing cars and trucks, he has his car (or truck) painted black with a large "M" Monster logo on the hood; Robby Gordon is sponsored by Monster on his NASCAR Sprint Cup cars and his Offroad racing trucks.

Monster sponsors a motocross race team named "Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki". Valentino Rossi's race cap bears a Monster logo, as do the Tech 3 Yamaha bikes of Colin Edwards and James Toseland. Prior to this, Monster sponsored Kawasaki. The Vans Warped Tour features a Monster touring bus that gives out free Monster Energy Drinks during the event.

In September 2009, Monster Energy teamed up with Activision to bring special redeemable codes on the Monster Energy website where people can submit codes included in Monster Energy packs to redeem things such as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Premium Themes and a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Map Pack code.

The caffeine content of Monster energy drinks is 10 mg/oz (34 mg/dL, 1.75 mmol/L),[4] or 160 mg for a 16 oz can. As with most other energy drinks the packaging usually has a warning printed on it saying to limit the number of cans consumed in a day - to 3 for the 16 oz size, and it is not recommended for pregnant women, children under 10 years old, or people who are sensitive to caffeine.

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, Sucrose, Glucose (broken down sucrose),Taurine, Sodium Citrate, Color Added, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, L-Carnitine, Caffeine, Sorbic Acid, Benzoic Acid, Niacinamide, Sodium Chloride, Glucuronolactone, Inositol, Guarana Seed Extract, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Sucralose, Riboflavin, Maltodextrin, Cyancobalamin.

I want to begin cycling but I don't know how to get started...HELP?

MalinaB

I want to begin cycling to build up my legs and to lower my blood pressure. I don't know what kind of bike to buy or the equipment that I need. Please Help.

Answer
That's the right track - you definitely need a local bike shop that you trust. Don't be intimidated! People of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes can ride a bicycle.

The first thing you gotta do is tell yourself - you can do this. Tell yourself that a lot. You aren't going out to be Lance Armstrong so no need to add any extra pressure whatsoever.

You are simply going to ride a bike... something we've been doing since we were kids! It's going to be fun!

Now you need a bike. And really - almost any bike will do, but you might consider not jumping into the road cycling elite arena just yet. How about a nice comfortable commuter bike with straight handlebars and a padded seat. Then a helmet.

Guess what? YOU ARE READY!

OK, OK, I know, you probably want to know like brand, type, etc. And the bike shop suggestion is good because you want to test ride! You can't do that in a dept. store. And you really can't get more than a "toolshed" bike at a dept. store. You'd be surprised - bike shops are competitive with the big box stores -- and they have a service department so please start there!

Another thing to do - join a bike forum online! A lot of forums have sections just for beginners... also for women so you can connect with other folks.

So test ride, talk to people, be fearless and have fun - that's all you need to get started. Hey if you don't buy anything from the bike shop - that's OK because let's say you go out and get a used bike - well it's going to need some service right? So those guys better treat you right or you'll take your service/repair dollars elsewhere!!

Do you see? You have the power girl. This is cool. I am excited for you, so don't get all caught up in the details - just take it one step at a time: Get a bike, get a helmet and start riding.

You can invest in other stuff later - like baskets, lights, clothing etc. as you see fit!

OK good luck and see you in the bike lane!

Do a google search for Sheldon Brown's web page... he's no longer with us on this earth - but tons of resources for beginners and pros alike.

I have granddaughter 4 months old. Is there a proper, safe, bike helmet for this age?

sequim2005

They live in Florida, so it is biking is all the time. What helmet do you recommend? I am more concerned about safety not price. Cost not a problem. It takes a minute for a tumble and at this age, so vulnerable. Also what type and brand for a almost 5 year old.

Answer
Don't you mean four YEARS old? If not, this would be neglectful on your part. Babies are not meant to ride at four months old. They do not have the correct muscles. Bicycling happens after they learn how to walk. Furthermore, they do not have sufficient motor skills at four months.

About the helmet: you can search for a child's helmet either online or at a bike shop. (Wal-Mart's selection is too limited). Find one for her size or age. It is better to bring a child to get one fit, that way it stays on better, and works better in a crash.

All helmets sold have to meet ANSI II standards, you will see the proof on the packaging. The reason why helmets can cost upward of $300 is because more money buys more vents (serious cyclists like ventilation).

What is the history envolving the use of bikers using duct tape as protectors?

Mad About

I'm not taling about outlaw bikers, though it might have started with them. I recently ran across a photo of Brandon Lee and his bike, and he had duct tape on his boots and on his hands. And I just wondered where that originated.

Answer
Cyclists sometimes use duct tape to keep out wind and cold by wrapping their feet and covering their helmet vents. Some also use it to help secure worn out velcro or shoe closures. I have no idea why anyone on a motorcycle would put it on their feet or hands, unless they got caught out with no boots or gloves and the tape was all they could find. But I suspect Brandon Lee has enough disposable cash to make sure that stuff is always available.

Can skateboard helmets be used for inline skate helmets?

Scrumdiliu

I know that there is a difference between bicycle helmets, skating helmets, skateboard helmets, and snowboarding helmets but I was wondering if skateboard helmets and skate helmets could be used as the same?

I am a new skater and I think it would be idea if I get skate pads, etc.

Also do you recommend a brand? I was looking at Walmart and they seemed pretty safe.

Answer
There are two types of helmets: Bicycle and Multisport.
The names don't really describe the differences but are based on history of their development.

Bicycle helmets are lighter and usually have more air vents to keep you cool. They are usually more aerodynamically shaped. They are designed for the types of accident you get while moving forward and are good for rec/fitness/race skating.

Multisport helmets are designed for protection when there is more risk of hitting the back of your head such as skateboarding or doing tricks on skates or bikes.
They tend to be hotter because of lack of vents. They are tend to have a round shape and cover the back and sides of the head. The lining is made to protect if you hit another object on the way down (like a rail for grinding).

All helmets are only designed for one hard hit. They may not appear to be damaged but they may not protect well against a second hit.

For your skates, get the helmet appropriate for the type of skating you will be doing.

This goes for your pads also. The pads for aggressive and freestyle skating are thicker and cover more area than for rec/fitness/race skating.

For rec/fitness/racing skating, wrist guards are really important. You will almost always slide on your hands. However, I wear aggressive glove style wrist guards because they cover more skin in order to keep it intact.
Knee pads are more optional for "straight ahead" skating. When (not if) you fall, you should be sliding instead of falling straight down. The pads keep the skin from being scraped up. I have found that the scrapes are just below the knee and not just in the area that the pads cover. However, scrapes there heal faster and are not as painful while healing than ones on your hand. Tegaderm is a wonderful way to cover this kind of scrape. It keeps it moist so that you don't have the pain that happens when dry scabs crack and peal. It also is waterproof, can stay on for a week, and can cover large areas.
I have yet to know anyone who has significantly scraped up an elbow in straight ahead skating.

What do I have to wear on a daily basis to ride my motorcycle?

ninjabot

I'm 19 in Alabama and I'm about to purchase a 2010 Kawasaki ninja 250. I have no experience on motorcycles and this will be my first bike. I have Already registered for an approved beginner class and gotten insurance quotes on owning it. I Am buying it as a cheap alternative to commute from class and work. I am wondering what gear i should buy along with the motorcycle that would be needed on a day to day basis.

Answer
Helmet. Helmets all protect the same. You pay more for features and comfort. I would get a full face or flip-up, because (not surprisingly) about half of impacts come from the front.

Jacket. Should be made specially for motorcycles. When you try it on you lean forward and put your arms out in front. A motorcycle jacket has sleeves a little longer and more room in the shoulders. Leather used to be king, for warmth, abrasion resistance, and because it doesn't flap in the wind. But now there are textiles that work just as well. For Summer you can get a 'mesh jacket' that the wind just goes right through.

Gloves. When (if) you fall, you instinctively put your hands out to stop yourself, so you want a layer of leather on the palms. There are mesh gloves for Summer too! In cooler weather you also need gloves to keep your hands warm.

Boots would be nice but I don't think they're essential. They protect your ankles. But you really need something substantial on your feet, a good pair of leather shoes, not flip-flops or crocs or something like that. Some kind of waffle rubber sole would be nice because you use your feet to hold the bike up at stops so you want to grip the ground well.

Some people insist you need overpants too, but I think they're just too much to hassle with. Jeans are fine.

You're not preparing for a big serious crash, just a spill. You'll hit some gravel or dead leaves in a curve and the bike will slide out from under you and deposit you relatively gently on the ground. Happens to everyone sooner or later. You learn to scan the surface ahead of you.

The most important thing is to be comfortable, not too cold or hot, in clothes that move with you.

What would be a really good first sport bike for under 4,500 used? Would a 500/600 be too big?

I BIKE ON

Ive always wanted a bike, and i promised myself i would get one soon after i got my drivers license. I get my license soon, this coming April. I'm getting it relatively late, considering i will be 17 in may, but its not a big deal. Anyways, it just occurred to me the other day i haven't even considered the idea of getting a bike. I don't have a job at the moment, and its not a top priority, but i still want to start looking.

I really dont want anything smaller than a 300. I like 250s and all, but I have heard the extra 50cc's makes a big difference in the power over the 250. Please dont take me as a bonehead looking to go speeding down the main streets in my city, i just want something that has a little more power to work with.
So far the only 300 I have seen is the ninja, and it looks decent. I also got a quote from all state today ( with some false personal info) that tells me insurance would be less than 80 a month with a clean slate driving record. That doesn't look nearly as high as i thought it would be.

Are there any other 300s out there that would make a good first bike? Please don't exclude larger bikes because i am free to any recommendations ( You guys are probably stupid to recommend a 600 anyways). I was looking at cbr500r and apparently they aren't very popular, although i havent investigated as to why. Thanks!

PS: I happen to be a big fan of the cbr, ninja, and gsx-r. Im biggest fan of the ninja though, because my dad used to take me on rides on his zx11. Fun as hell. He set some good examples by taking me down a back road across the highway at 150 mph. Talk about scary shit, being on the back and all. All im saying, anything from those makes would be a good suggestion on a personal like scale.

Answer
Ah.................................ok. SQUID. You're kidding right? Starting out with false info to insurance companies isn't a good start.

They probably won't pay your survivor benefits.

Wear a helmet.

Good luck.
