Bike helmets that don't make me look dumb?

insanechil

I have a bike helmet that I always wear when I ride but it makes me look dumb.

Answer
Giro makes a nice line of helmets. I kinda like the Indicator or the Transfer - no sun visor.

Which looks more dumb - wearing a helmet - lying in a hospital bed comatose - or dead? Choice is yours. Personally, I wouldn't ride my bicycle 10 feet in the city without a helmet.

how many bicycle crashes happen without helmets?

Sky

needs to be awnserd today

Answer
I don't know exactly, but there are a lot of cyclist without helmets, so I'd think that some of those do fall off.

At a guess, it's probably about half of all cycle accidents occur when the the rider is not wearing a helmet.

The point is, that if you wear a helmet, you have more chance of getting up, and riding again, if you wear a helmet.

bike helmet?

hi mum

i live in the uk and always see children wearing bike helmets but not their parents. this made me think that isn't that a bad example or something. can someone tell me why parents don't but children have to is it cost or appreance or something.

btw. i know some adults do but i am going with what i view as the majority of the british public.

Answer
I agree with you completely. Helmets are required for children where I live, but I rarely see adults wear them. I really think it sets a bad example for the kids.

motor bike suits help please?

Lol

does you need to wear a bike suit ( ano you got to wear a helmet ) but do you need to wear the suit in england is the law that you need to wear it or not thanks :D

Answer
In England a helmet is mandatory, but other gear is not. See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069854 where it says that (1) it is "ADVISABLE to wear eye protectors" (emphasis added), (2) that you should "CONSIDER wearing ear protection" (emphasis added) and that "boots, gloves and suitable clothing may help to protect you" - but no requirement is made for this non-helmet gear.

However, if your body is valuable to you, I would strongly urge you to wear proper gear all the time. Even a fall at 30mph would most likely lead to considerable skin abrasion, leaving large scars, etc. I once experienced a fall at 30mph and, fortunately, only had a large bruise. But my helmet and my gear were severely scratched/ripped - and I'm glad that I don't have the same scratches/rips/scars on my skin now.

An example of the consequences of a motorcycle accidents on a woman who didn't wear protective gear can be seen here - warning, this is graphic: http://www.getyourownbike.com/BrittanyMorrow.htm

Everybody who is serious about motorcycling uses top gear - both professional racers as well as passionate long-distance tourers. Those people know it the best. You should follow their example. Enjoy your ride.

Will a bicycle helmet work the same as a riding helmet?

Jenn

Bicycle helmets are cheaper so I was wondering if getting one of those instead of a riding helmet would still be as safe?
Asking this for a friend!
I personally don't wear riding helmets, but the little kids I give lessons to are required.

Answer
i would use a riding helmet...you don't want to be cheap with your life. here is a helmet that i got http://2wheelbikes.com/greenline-36-adult-bike-helmets.html and it was great. but again its a bike helmet. better safe than sorry.

Dumb Bicycle Helmet Question?

Old Hippie

Although being strictly on 2 wheels for a while now - I still consider myself a novice in many ways. So, if I don't get the terminology right - pardon me. I bought what I thought was a good helmet, a Giro Indicator (link below). The ventilation in both the top & rear are very good. That's why I like it - my head stays cool even in the summer. But, here's the problem... The backside of the helmet is just that hard foam material, I'll call it. There is no hard outer case. That's just on the top & somewhat on the sides. A gust of wind came along while I was taking a break and blew the helmet off the bike rack & onto the ground. It landed strictly on the back side & cracked that hard foam material. Being on a severe budget - I used some epoxy to lock it back in place. I can barely see the crack! It seems structurally sound again. But is it? There is no damage to the top or sides, not even a scratch. If I do need a new one, I'll have to wait until the first of next month when the next VA Disability check comes in. I'd get a better one, but simply can't afford one of those $100 helmets. $40 is about my limit. Thanks...

Answer
Old

Yep, the foam has been compromised and so is your head if you should go down. Even so wear the helmet until a replacement is available.... it is much better than nothing. Try Ebay for a Giro helmet. The total cost might be the same (including the shipping) but you may get a better helmet for less $'s. You will often find some previous year close-outs pretty cheap! As always, know your size.

I just got from PC Florida this afternoon after 3 days there. I had a eye opener while there. While helmets aren't required for riders, EYE protection is. I saw rental after rental scooter on the strip and around all the beach area. Very few of the people riding had eye protecion, shirts, OR shoes. Some had sandals, but many were bare footed as the day they were born. Women/girls riding with their men and they didn't even have on pants or shirts. Many were in bikini suits and bare footed. I saw a few out of town bikers (they were riding sport bikes and cruisers) MOST of them had on protection and were riding like they knew how. Is there something the rental companies are avoiding telling these customers? Sometimes we were in bumper tto bumper stop and go. These kids were scooting up the bicycle lanes and darting in and out of traffic. Maybe a few opinions here? I was really shocked by the obvious disregard for laws and safety.

Wouldn't you say cycling at night is safer?

Ronnie

I love to cycle, very relaxing and well as good exercise. Where I am from it is extremely busy during the day, and people are always yelling at you and honking there horns when you are on a bicycle. There are many times I felt scared for my life almost getting hit, I have been hit 3 times and twice were right during the day when the driver saw me but he said screw it (just a guy on a bike) and kept going. I cycle at night now, I consider myself advance, my parents cry sometimes wishing I don't go out and due it and have bough me reflective gear, which has almost cost me my life at night. It freaks you out if you are driving and a reflective vest pops up out of nowhere, people don't know what to do at all. Now I ride with black sweat pants, and a black hoodie, I always where a helmet (number 1 rule) I ride with head phones, and I ride about a $1000 bike with out a little ding ding bell. I ride against on coming traffic and I am looking back every 15 seconds and studying drivers. I am a fan of alley cat racing in nyc (youtube it) but I am in a midwest medium cize city. I never ride on highways avoiding that bottle getting thrown at me. I would rather have the driver not even see me and if I see a car vearing off the road I get away. I can get up to 35mph on a flat road (done it during rush hour lol) At night you have street lights and less cars are out, and people have tried to chase me but I just laugh and ride circles around them, even if they are driving a car lol. I can go in and out of cars, alleys and I have road between a foot wide space since the bike is only 8 inches. Does this make me crazy? or smarter than the average cyclist?

Cops see me all the time, and I have never been stopped not once, if you don't have bell on your bike you are breaking the law, and headphones is a ticket too.
I ride on the left side of the road, I still look back and when I see someone coming my way, I just get in the right hand lane. Man up and try it sometime, the city is beautiful when no one is out, makes you appreciate where you live.
Mattman, you are a joke, wtf I have had water balloons and bottles thrown at me walking down the side walk, teenagers get all hoped up on dope and do stupid things but you have your head in your ass and live in a closest

Will a fleece ear band fit under a bicycle helmet?

Exiled Mai

My son's ears (and face) get cold on his bike ride to school. I'm trying to find accessories (besides good gloves, which he has) to help keep him warm and motivate him to bike. Thanks for your advice from experience.

Answer
Invest in a bike specific beanie or hat. They are made very thin so they fit under a bike helmet without too much difficulty. You just need to widen the restraint system a little. There are lots of different options from skintight skullcaps to fleece that is a little thicker. They can either come down over the ears like a normal winter hat or have special extensions that reach down just to cover the ears. Take a look at the clothing at Performance Bike for options. Also, be sure to go to your local bike shop since your son would probably rather try some hats on with a helmet to see how it feels.

Another possible cool/cold weather option is a vest. I don't know how far the ride is or how cold it gets where you are but a cycling specific vest is made of a thin windbreaking material that helps keep your core warm without adding bulk. They often also have reflective material on them to make the rider easier for cars to see.

Hope that helps.

does a 13 year old girl need to wear a bike helmet?

Aubrey

Does a 13 year old girl need to wear a bike helmet when she is riding her bike in the neighborhood? Also when she rides its usually with a friends so its not like she is by herself.

Answer
Aubrey

Yes, a helmet is critical t your safety. I investigate accidents. Most cycling accident do not happen with cars, but accidents where the rider errors. I recently had a critical head injury where there was NO speed involved. The rider simply slipped while standing on a wet sidewalk! Man of these riders were experienced and had good cycling skills. They just made a simple (but ultimately critical) riding error. It happens in a split second.

I have ridden at a high level my entire life. A helmet has saved me twice! You will never be as good a bike handler as the pros...l yet they wear one each and every time they go out for a ride. GET THE HINT?

Bike helmet instead of riding helmet.... will pick a B.A.?

jellybean

I ride western and don't ware a helmet. My 7 year old daughter wants to start learning how to ride, and of coarse must ware a helmet! I have not yet bought one for her, but I am going to. The horse that she'll start learning on is my soon to be 16 yro gelding, he is very well behaved and I trust him, but anything can happen and I want my girl to be safe just incase... So my questions are
#1. Could she ware her bike helmet for now, just untill I get her a proper helmet? Or is that a bad idea?

#2. How much do kids helmets cost? It wouldn't matter if it's english or western... It's just to protect her head, but she will be riding western too :)

Thanks in advance for the advice... And please no mean or rude or stupid answers!
*donald your an idiot! There are western styled riding helmets. There are even cowboy hat helmets, look it up you prick! And there is nothing "creepy" about the way I talk about my girl! " It's just to protect her head, but she will be riding western too" what I meant was that I don't care what type of style the helmet is, english or western... I don't really care how it looks cause I just want it to protect her head you moron! Then I stated that she'd be riding western, because then ppl would probably recommend western styled helmets!

*the christ puncher did you even read the question... Or do you like to randomly answer questions that you know nothing about and leave dumbass answers? She has JUST taken an interest in riding... Like yesterday! I am going to buy her a proper helmet as I CLEARLY stated, I just haven't had time to go buy one.... Do us all a favor, quit answering questions on y answers and go play in traffic ;)

I love my daughte

Answer
1. No. Most children's bike helmets are little more than styrofoam with a decorative plastic shell. They will protect your child's head from short falls at slow speeds, considering that children on bikes generally don't end up going, say, 30 miles per hour. A bicycle helmet will do little to protect your child's head in the event of a fall from a horse. Go get her an ASTM-SEI certified horseback riding helmet.

2. Depends on the helmet brand, some are cheap some are wicked expensive. Troxel tends to be on the cheaper side as far as pricing goes. Just make sure you get her an ASTM-SEI certified helmet, a brand new one, and whatever price you pay you will know it is adequate to protect your child's head.

Sport Bike Purchase?

Jesse

I am a 23 year old graduating college who is getting the motorcycle itch. I am aware of the $500+ estimated extra costs beyond the motorcycle itself (helmet, riding jacket, etc).

I am thinking of taking some beginner courses to see if motorcycling is for me & getting my motorcycle endorsement. If I like it so far, I will then consider buying a Sport bike. I don't want a sport bike to be an idiot and go moronically fast, only in city/highway speeds. I just have never liked cruiser bikes all that much in terms of style and how I sit on them.

From reading, the Kawasaki Ninja 250 would seem like a good choice - used of course since the preponderance of the info says I will drop it in the first year or so.

What other brands should I keep in mind at the dealer and craigslist?

Am I just an idiot who is bound to kill himself and should turn away before even spending a dime?

Thanks

Answer
You are not an idiot for wanting to ride. I am fifty four and have been riding since I was eleven. I still get comments like 'what's wrong with you, do you have a death wish or something'. I simply love to ride. It's like flying, only really close to the ground. I commute nearly everyday here in Los Angeles, and I have managed to stay alive so far. The fact that you show a little trepidation about riding is a good sign though.
Taking a beginners course is an excellent idea. Riding is a skill and needs to be practiced and developed.
I think you might want to try something slightly larger than a 250, perhaps a 400 or 500 cc bike. The reason I say that, is that if you do like riding, you will probably keep it awhile and when you move up to a larger bike the transition won't be so dramatic. You will also find that power used foolishly can get you killed, but used wisely can save your ass. As far as what brand, all the Japanese bikes are pretty damn good. Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Honda build wonderful bikes, so just go with what you like, and continue using the Internet to find reviews, reliability, etc. Remember to ride sober and aware, and keep in mind that in any collision with anything, you lose. Good luck!

Epilepsy and dirt bike riding...?

Cole Mille

I have epilepsy and i had it since i was about thirteen i've been off medications without a seizure for about 5 years but i recently had another one. I don't want to stop the things i love to do though. I've had my license suspended for 2 years now but one of my hobbies is dirt bike riding. I just got into it really but is there anyway i can make it safe enough for me to continue riding?

Answer
Every dirtbiker is going to fall whether they have a seizure or not.
ALWAYS ride with full riding gear - helmet, MX boots, Mx pants (most have hip & knee padding), gloves and a chest protector.
If you "recently" had a seizure, go back to your neurologist for a consult.
NEVER ride alone.
If you should ride alone, keep a cell phone with you (in a tool pack behind the seat, or behind the front # plate) and wear a MedicAlert Necklace or sports band.

In Georgia, is it illegal to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

Tony Tsui

I want to get a new bicycle to ride recreationally. I will only be riding on neighborhood roads and at parks. I will not use it as a mean of transportation or on public roads.

Answer
A full FORTY-FIVE percent of all cycling accidents are "solo falls". No one else or nothing else involved.

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Is a skateboard helmet ok for bike riding?

HeyHowAreY

Or should I wear a bike helmet.Which one is better and will give better protection?

Thank you!! :)

Answer
Hey

The key would be the ANSI rating difference between the two helmets, and the helmet material. I am betting that the rating is lower on the skateboard helmet because of average lower speed and impact. Other significant issues may be weight and ventilation.

Helmets tend to be very sports specific to meet the unique demands posed by each spot. While a football helmet would provide superior protection over cycling helmets. Its weight could not be carried comfortably by a cyclist with his head down. The weight, the limited vision, and impaired hearing all a detrement. And, the helmet would provide too little ventilation.... you would quickly overheat wearing one.

What do you use? My hubby and I both have bikes and we want to be able to take our 10 month old with us on cool summer evenings. When I was a kid my Dad always took us along with him in the little trailors.. but I don't know if that is okay for an infant. Thoughts??

Answer
This is a helmet you can get in infant size. http://www.amazon.com/Giro-Me2-Infant-Bike-Helmet/dp/B000FABD0G/ref=pd_sim_sg_2#moreAboutThisProduct Gyro is a good brand to buy. That's what I use. On the link, if you scroll down to the section where it says "customers that bought this were also interested in..." (or something like that) it shows a bunch of options for the newer type infant seats that attach to the front of the bike instead of the rear. I have been looking into this too and it seems to me the bike will have a much better center of gravity if you attach the baby seat to the front, between you and the handlebars than the rear, which might cause the bike to fishtail. I think I may get this one. http://www.amazon.com/iBert-Safe-T-Front-Mounted-Bicycle/dp/B000H4E7EO/ref=pd_sim_sg_1 It gets very good reviews and ratings. The design would fit much better on my Cannondale than the Wee-ride too. The wee-ride looks nice but I think this one could be used longer and will fit more bikes.

I agree with everyone else about the trailer. I don't think a trailer is the way to go at that age. They have no shock absorbers and the baby will feel every little bump. Unless you are doing only straight road riding on a very smooth surface, I'd say go with the bike mounted setup. Even then, always get the child a helmet. (Babies look so adorable in the little helmet anyway!)

***EDIT*** OK, I'm not going to go back and rewrite what I just wrote but I just found a phenomenal article on this subject! http://www.helmets.org/little1s.htm It has made me realize one important fact; the law! Depending on where you live, apparently bringing your baby along for the bikeride a under one year of age (whether on the bike or in a trailer) can be illegal. This is illegal in NY state and some others so be sure to check your state or location's laws before doing so. The article touches on a lot of points I never would have considered. It's worth the read!

A little girl gets a bike for Christmas. She is stopped at the crosswalk waiting for a green light when a mounted policeman comes up along side of her. He gets down from his horse and asks the little girl if Santa brought her the bike? She smiles a real big toothless grin and says "Yes Sir he did!" The cop then tells her "Well you need to tell Santa that he forgot to bring you a helmet, and that is going to get you a $10 ticket" Still smiling, the little girl asked the cop if Santa brought him his horse? He thought this was really cute so he says "Why yes he did!" The little girl says "You need to tell him that the Pricks are supposed to go on the bottom!"

A farmer got pulled over by a state trooper for speeding, and the trooper started to lecture the farmer about his speed, and in general began to throw his weight around to try to make the farmer uncomfortable. Finally, the trooper got around to writing out the ticket, and as he was doing that he kept swatting at some flies that were buzzing around his head. The farmer said, "Having some problems with circle flies there, are ya?"
The trooper stopped writing the ticket and said--"Well yeah, if that's what they are--I never heard of circle flies". So the farmer says--"Well, circle flies are common on farms. See, they're called circle flies because they're almost always found circling around the back end of a horse."
The trooper says, "Oh," and goes back to writing the ticket. Then after a minute he stops and says, "Hey...wait a minute, are you trying to call me a horses asss?"
The farmer says, "Oh no, officer. I have too much respect for law enforcement and police officers to even think about calling you a horses asss."
The trooper says, "Well, that's a good thing," and goes back to writing the ticket.
After a long pause, the farmer says, "Hard to fool them flies though."

Why do we have to wear helmets when...?

Zoe Love

Why do we have to wear helmets on bicycles?
If you think about it, there are more risks driving in a car and we don't wear helmets in the car?
There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. And 42,636 people killed.
And as for bicycles 350,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. And 250 children ages 14 and under died in bicycle-related crashes. Motor vehicles were involved in 230 of these deaths. Yet we wear helmets on bicycles not cars? Wearing a helmet in a car could've saved 1,000s of people as many die from brain related injuries. And why do we wear them on bicycles?

Answer
To protect your head\ brain, if your hit by a car on a bike your head could hit the ground with the same force as the car or be crushed under another car.

Cars have seatbelts & airbags to restrain your head from hitting anything hard, the car is also like a cage which stops your head from hitting the ground.

I think a helmet would restric your vision and increase the chances of an accident

I'm sure if wearing a helmet did drastically improve survival rate it would be compulsory

Can wearing a motorcycle helmet increase your chance of injury?

Bob

I've asked before, I'm asking again:

I'm looking for information on motorcycle helmets and injuries. Specifically I need to find cases where someone on a motorcycle was:

a)wearing a helmet.

b)involved in an accident.

c)suffered injuries that would not have occurred if they had been wearing a helmet, or had injuries that were worsened because of the helmet.

I don't need second hand hearsay. I don't need to know about this thing that happened to this one guy you know. I facts that can be verified.

Also - if any medical professionals would we willing to correspond with me regarding this subject I'd appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.
Greydoc6 - I could really use your help. If you'd be interested in corresponding with me my email address is bigbob (at) ameritech (dot) net. Thank you for your time.
I am not an attorney. I have no professional interest in this at all. I am an avid motorcyclist and I ALWAYS wear a helmet when I ride.

I'm currently invovled in a debate with a local political lobbying group and I'm trying to find ammo for my side of the arguement: helmets are a good idea, and any arguement to the contrary is BS.

Thanks all for your help.

Answer
It is conceivable that a helmet could be a cause of injury. There may be rare cases where this is so.

However, a bicyclist or motorcyclist is statistically much less likely to sustain a head injury if wearing a helmet. This has been demonstrated in various ways many times.

For part of my career, I would serve as a ward attending on the convalescent unit for one month per year. On the ward there were always one or two kids with severe head injuries sustained from bicycle or ATV injuries. Practically all such patients were not wearing head protection at the time of the accident. Most survived, but recovery was painfully slow and often incomplete, requiring years of rehabilitation.

So the resistance to wearing helmets and your implication that they are harmful is very frustrating from my viewpoint.

Correct Motorcycle helmet size?

Matt Smith

I was about to bid on ebay to buy my first motorcycle helmet. And I realized, I have no idea what size I am. I measured my circumference of my head with a flexible ruler and it roughly came out to be 24 inches, or 64 cm. Now this is where I got confused because in hats, I wear a size S/M. Whereas in the motorcycle chart , I'd be a size XXL ?? Wtf

Answer
Mine is right about 24", too, and I wear an XL helmet.
As uncomfortable as it may sound, you want a motorcycle helmet to fit tightly.
Quick easy check is to put it on, grab the chin area and pull it down (hold your head still).
If the helmet slides down over your eyes, it's too large.
You may not be able to try on the one you're looking at on eBay, but maybe visit a local bike shop and try on a few, then go buy the one you want in the proper size.
See the source link for an example on proper sizing.

Finally, if an XL simply feels too tight... get an XXL. Slightly too big is going to be way better than riding around getting a headache and having a red spot on your forehead all day.

JOSE J

does a bicycle rider over 18 yrs old require a
helmet by law

Answer
Hey Jose,

Here is the whole enchilada on the California bike helmet law. Anyone under the age of 18 years of age has to wear a helmet while riding any bicycle, scooter, skates or skateboard on any PUBLIC roadway, highway, bicycle path or street. The key word is Public. If your neighborhood is located on a private roadway then the law does not apply on private land. Here is the California Vehicle Code section:

21212. (a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.

(b) Any helmet sold or offered for sale for use by operators and passengers of bicycles, nonmotorized scooters, skateboards, or in-line or roller skates shall be conspicuously labeled in accordance with the standard described in subdivision (a) which shall constitute the manufacturer's certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable safety standards.

(c) No person shall sell, or offer for sale, for use by an operator or passenger of a bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, or in-line or roller skates any safety helmet which is not of a type meeting requirements established by this section.

(d) Any charge under this subdivision shall be dismissed when the person charged alleges in court, under oath, that the charge against the person is the first charge against that person under this subdivision, unless it is otherwise established in court that the charge is not the first charge against the person.

(e) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of this section is an infraction punishable by a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars ($25).

The parent or legal guardian having control or custody of an unemancipated minor whose conduct violates this section shall be jointly and severally liable with the minor for the amount of the fine imposed pursuant to this subdivision.

(f) Notwithstanding Section 1463 of the Penal Code or any other provision of law, the fines collected for a violation of this section shall be allocated as follows:

(1) Seventy-two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall be deposited in a special account of the county health department, to be used for bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, and in-line and roller skate safety education and for assisting low-income families in obtaining approved bicycle helmets for children under the age of 18 years, either on a loan or purchase basis. The county may contract for the implementation of this program, which, to the extent practicable, shall be operated in conjunction with the child passenger restraint program pursuant to Section 27360.

(2) Two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall be deposited in the county treasury to be used by the county to administer the program described in paragraph (1).

(3) If the violation occurred within a city, 25 percent of the amount collected shall be transferred to and deposited in the treasury of that city. If the violation occurred in an unincorporated area, this 25 percent shall be deposited and used pursuant to paragraph (1).

Added Ch. 1000, Stats. 1993. Effective January 1, 1994.
Amended Sec. 6, Ch. 674, Stats. 1996. Effective January 1, 1997.
Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 475, Stats. 2002. Effective January 1, 2003.

Bike Purchase: Which one would you purchase for a new bike commuter?

mikaISOTOV

Hello everyone, so I've decided to ditch the automobile (for financial reasons mostly) and I want to purchase a bike. Its up to these two bikes which I will get but can't decide which one is worth my hard earn money. One is the Diamondback Edgewood LX Hybrid which is $300 and the Giant Escape City 2011 bike which is $540. I'm new to bikes so I don't know all that much about bikes so any help is very much appreciated. I'm only biking 6 miles roundtrip on city streets. My main question is whether there is a justification to pay that extra $240 for the Giant bike or are both bikes equally durable and good performance wise to go ahead and get the $300 Diamondback bike?

Answer
The Giant is a much more capable platform. The overall components are generally a step above the Diamondback. Also if you are going to use the bike as a commuter you need fender and a bike rack which would run you another $50 to buy and install so the actual difference is more like $190 dollars.

So go with the Giant, buy some lights, a tire patch kit and minipump, water bottle holder, and a helmet for a total of about $600 dollars. Seems like a lot but consider that is costs about $.50 a mile to own and operate a car so your bike will pay you back after about 100 trips to work (about 1/2 a year)

Is it just me or are bicycle helmets worthless....?

Nazgul

I'm not an avid bike rider so my point might be moot but in my opinion they seem very ineffective, sit far too high and don't offer any face protection, I can understand they are made for low (bike) speed impacts but it seem auto accidents are far more likely to injure or kill you thus making the bike helmet worthless in a real world scenario. Also, my biggest complaint is the false sense of security they offer in my opinion and make non wearers seem reckless and dangerous. How often does one land in a way the a high riding foam and plastic skull cap can protect you from...I would be far more concerned about my face structure, fill me in please. Thanks!

Answer
If your helmet is sitting "far too high", you're wearing it wrong. The front should cover the forehead & be the first thing to touch the ground.
https://www.google.com/#q=how+to+wear+bicycle+helmet
http://www.evolutionofdad.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/bike_helmet.jpg

Next...if you think most bicycle accidents or "wrecks" or crashes involve a motor vehicle - you are WRONG! A full 45% do NOT involve anyone or anything else. 45% are SOLO FALLS.
http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg

Are the streets & roads in your area lined with marshmallows in case of a fall? No...I didn't think so. Most bicycle crashes occur at slower speeds, not involving a car. Helmets can & do save lives.

As far as reckless & dangerous cyclists...don't ya think they would be that way with or without a helmet? Sometimes...you just can't fix stupid. Prime example or illustration demonstrated on this link... https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZo2DGC5RrlNrAdnwXhNsMew1K_bKF-6LKFXWsvioj6nwSov1OWoeFOL9VrTCqTSemy73-6zhvvaym2IdHsqZ8iRZ1zEy3DbgbE-5HWOaeda8kB2u8P6ZXgnKxxO6epbksZtAs_rG6FHVP/s400/You+Can't+Fix+Stupid.jpg

Price of good road bike?

hellodolly

What is the price of a road bike for just riding(training for other sports) but not so bad as too be shy of? The cheapest quality bike for my situation?

Answer
Well, it all depends on what you mean by "good". You will always be able to buy a better bike for more money. The trick is to keep with whatever budget you may have.

My suggestion is to go to a local bike shop and get some recommendations based on your budget. Keep in mind that the salesperson will be trying to upsale you by telling you how much better a bike you will get if you were only willing to spend $50 more. However, you must remain focused and keep from getting distracted -- be very wary of spending more money if you really don't understand or can't feel any differences for the more expensive part.

Finally, be sure to save some money to buy a helmet, shoes, pedals and cycling shorts. The helmet is essential, the shoes, pedals, and shorts will make a much bigger difference in your ride comfort than any upgrade to a sub-$1000 bike.

Need help buying a bike.Help!?

Anahi

I need a new bike but I dont know which one to choose. HELP!!!

Answer
First off, avoid a department store bike like the plague!!! Go to a reputable bike shop, preferably with a trusted friend who has lots of bike riding experience on both road and mountain bikes if you can. Look around the shop and note the variety of bikes as well as brands. Talk with an experienced salesperson, one who will listen to what you have to say. They need to know what you want, not for them to charge ahead and sell you the bike they want to sell. Take it for a test ride. In fact, take several different styles and brands for test rides. Different makes of bikes will feel very different. The bike shop should offer free adjustments in fitting the bike to you. I.e., move the saddle front or back, tilt the saddle to the best angle, etc. And a good shop will want you to bring it back in a month of riding to make adjustments to the bike such as tightening the cables for the brakes and derailleurs, truing wheels if necessary, etc. And keep some money to buy a helmet (and a lock if you are going to ride it somewhere and park it unattended).

Is it illegal to ride a bike without a helmet on the road?

Infantry

I live in Canada Ontario Toronto. Is it illegal to ride my bike without a helmet on the road, I'm just wondering since I'll be going to high school and riding my bike to there.

Answer
I'll tell you, being struck by a car when I was 15 and sustaining a very serious head injury(In a coma for six months!), everyone regardless of age should be required to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle!

Not sure if it's illegal where you live though. Call your local police and ask them. They know the laws.

do i realy need to wear a helmet on my bicycle?

Jeff H

im 17 and in ontario.there just so gay i dont want to wear the stupid thing
but do the cops realy care? ps i have an engine straped to my bike and i cruise around 40kph so that may factor in somehow?

Answer
You don't care enough to protect yourself or your family so don't bother. There are two types of riders those who have crashed and those that will.

If you go to Las Vegas always bet on the 3000+lb car over the 170lb helmet-less bike rider.

Toddler helmet wearing?

eml

My son got a Strider bicycle from his grandparents complete with helmet. The bicycle hasn't gotten here yet, but the helmet did. I put it on him to see if it would fit and he flat out refused to take it off and immediately wanted to go outside and get on his tricycle. Now mind you, this tricycle has the parent steering handle and my son is only 21 months and can't even pedal yet. He wanted to go all over the neighborhood on his tricycle wearing his helmet. As a parent, how many of you would have driven by and thought of me as the extremely overprotective parent who made her son wear a helmet on a tricycle that he wasn't even controlling?
V - you obviously haven't see my son go full speed down our sloped driveway on his riding toys...it's just to protect him from himself, not from some random car or bus that may just happen to drive by. I don't want my son to hit his head enough times to become stupid. I deal with stupid way too much.
V - stupid people just like being stupid because they don't know any better!

Answer
Once I saw one of my neighbours strolling down the street with her then-four-year-old on a dog's leash. Neighbour was a touch embarrassed. "She insisted on it!"

I said, "I figured..." Anyone else with a toddler will assume it was in line with having to wear the rain boots on a sunny summer day; anyone without a toddler will assume it's the norm.

And it is increasingly the norm. My tricycler wears a helmet because helmets are the law for bicycling children here, and I didn't want to have to have the first bicycle come with a "And now you need to do this..." unpleasant surprise. You pedal -- you wear a helmet -- simple and no-fuss.

Riding a motorcycle is unsafe, even with a helmet

Lois Griff

People in cars have to wear seatbelts...........you should have to wear helmets.

But even with a helmet, motorcycles are very unsafe......if you crash, your body can go flying. How wreckless.

Regular, non-motor bikes are very beneficial and serve as healthy exercise....but still wreckless to ride them without a helmet.

Why don't you people wear helmets? Do you not mind if your head gets busted open?

Answer
You are right, motorcycles are unsafe. Some other things that are unsafe: sex, airplanes, elevators, earthquakes, sharks, boats, ocean, trains, wilderness, cars, dogs, bicycles, skateboards, drugs, running. Now if you check statistics you'll find motorcycling doesn't need you attention as much as many other things. Sex causes more injury and death that motorcycles ever could, perhaps you should spend your efforts to fix sex. What do you care if someone busts their head open, does it somehow effect your life OR does your life suck and you choose to harass people about wearing a helmet cause it makes you feel better. If you just want to help people then I'd suggest doing something about the terrible drivers that choose to crash into people with motorcycles, if they are hard at seeing then maybe they shouldn't drive, fix that if you want to make a difference. By the way, I wear a helmet and I know it's not up to me if other people do. Maybe make a deal with some non helmet wearers, You'll do what they tell you to do if they do what you want.

Should I leave my motorcycle helmet chained up to my bike?

Martyn

Hi. I have recently bought a Honda cg 125 and wondered if when parked in a multistory car park, whether it is safe to chain my motorcycle helmet to my bike? Many thanks

Answer
Some motorcyclists have bumped cars and knocked car mirrors off. Hence, some car drivers do not like all motorcyclists. When they find a motorcycle without a rider around, no one watching, the helmet is stolen and tossed into the trash -- pay back for getting their mirrors broken. Slicing your helmet only takes a second more, and your will helmet be cut and still tossed into the trash.

If you want to keep the helmet, keep the helmet with you.

If you cannot keep the helmet with you, lock it inside a lockable hard top box.

What kind of helmet do I need for Mountain Biking?

David

I plan to get a really nice $200 mountain bike in the next couple of days, but I have really no idea what kind of helmet I'd need for Mountain biking. A few of my friends say that a regular bicycle helmet will work, but I am concerned that if I somehow fall of the bike, and hit my head on a tree, that a regular bike helmet would break.

I was thinking of getting one of those full face helmets, similar to those helmets that Dirt Bike riders wear. Is that okay, or is it completely unnecessary?

Answer
David

You will find the full face helmets hot and very uncomfortable to wear. A mountain bike helmet with or without a visor would be a great choice.

You do not have to go high digit for a helmet. What you get for more money is a lighter, cooler, with better air flow and suspension systems. The companies make helmets to fit different shaped heads SO DO NOT just buy one. Try on several brands. There are some companies helmets that I cannot wear... they are painful to put on.

I need a new mountain bike helmet. Any suggestions on makes and models that are good for the price?

treebark

Answer
HI Treebark. Every helmet fits differently. The best thing to do is go to a few bike shops that carry different brands of helmets and try them on. Hopefully the sales person in the bike shop can help you select , adjust and fit the helmet properly when you try them on.
Most GIRO helmets fit me very well and BELL helmets do not fit the shape of my head, but BELL is a quality helmet maker. When you try the helmets on try and be aware of pressure points. These are area's where the pads come in contact with your head. If it feels tight and uncomfotable try a different brand or model of helmet. Most good helmets come with different thickness pads that you can switch out to make a more custom fit.
Price is also a big factor. You get what you pay for when you purchase retail. Best way is to shop around either on the web or local bike shops for last years helmets or closeouts. Sometimes you can purchase a high end helmet for half price or even more! Most helmets are the same as last years model, just a different color or graphics on the helmet.
If you purchase a lower priced helmet make sure it has the CPSC or ASTM certification sticker. All helmets have to be up to these standards of helmet safety. Remember More vents in the helmet, the cooler your head stays on hot days.
Hope this helps.

do bike helmets expire? ?

cam c

i have a helmet that is about 5 years old and was wondering if the material breaks down over time to where they are no longer safe and should be replaced.

Answer
I checked my helmets and there is no expiration date on them. I went to the Bell helmet web site and couldn't find an answer. I know if you bonk your helmet while wearing it you are supposed to replace it, as they are one crash items. I really don't know or considered if there is a life span of a un-crashed helmet. Here is the e-mail for serious inquiries at Bell helmet they can give you the official answer. Answer_Desk@bellsports.com

I would assume that if you don't dent or fracture the helmet that it is good for a long time, but check with the manufacturer for the official answer. When you do come back and tell us.

Is there an adult bike helmet out there that doesn't look ridiculous?

Sierra

The ones I've tried on are so huge and heavy---I get a headache from them and I feel like I look ridiculous. After many close calls with spacey drivers on cell phones or drugs, I have gotten to the point where I won't ride my bike until I get a helmet. So any name brands and model #'s that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Personally, I think people not wearing helmets on their bikes look like idiots.

If you have only tried helmets from places like Wal-Mart or Target, they are pretty heavy and uncomfortable, from my experience (had to buy a helmet in a rural area on a camping trip when I forgot mine--it was all that was available).

If you go to a bike shop or a place like REI, you can buy a decent helmet for under $50 and a really nice helmet for under $100. Giro and Bell are the two biggest companies (actually, it is the same company now). Specialized makes some nice helmets as well, and a few other companies, too.

I recommend buying one at a place you can try it on. Different brands fit differently. Some fit round heads better, others fit oval heads better. Some come in different sizes, some are universal with a ratchet on the back to tighten or loosen. If you have been getting headaches, you might be wearing a helmet that was too tight or was pinching somewhere, or it was both and too heavy as well. Occasionally my helmet will pinch a little during a ride, I think my head swells a bit or something. I unclick the ratchet in the back one notch and it is just fine.

Try on a bunch of helmets. You should barely be able to feel it. I have three helmets right now. One cost about $30, a Giro Transfer for everyday commuting. One cost $100, a Specialized Aurora--It sometimes pinches a bit if I don't adjust it just so, but it is pink, so I wear it. And one cost about $135, a Bell Sweep, I got it on sale and have never actually worn it--a spare for when I need to replace one of the others. All are comfortable, but surprisingly, the $30 is most comfortable.

good starter sports bike?

drum_stick

i'm going to buy a motorcycle next year so i started looking at bikes. i want to know what bikes are good to start with (i'm 5'9'' and 120lbs) so far i've been looking and the kawasaki Ninja 250r

Answer
Everyone recommends the Ninja 250. It's an okay bike but understand a 250 can't do highway speeds all day. So if your plans include long trips at 65 mph or above (more than a few exits on the highway) you'd want something bigger. The 250 is all the motorcycle you will ever need under 50 mph or so.

If you plan to do some 'touring', you want at least 500cc. 650 would be better. It's not the power you're worried about, it's the weight. A heavier bike is a little harder to manage, especially at first. But a 500 or 650 is not that much bigger and heavier.

You want to start with a used bike. Something 5-10 years old, old enough to be depreciated but new enough that you can still get parts. I would say any of the Japanese mfgrs are good. Suzuki GS500 or SV650. Honda 599 'Hornet'. Kawasaki Ninja 500 or 650. (Yamaha has bikes in this category too but I forget the model nos.)

You want to be able to sit on a bike with both feet flat on the ground. At 5'9" this shouldn't be a problem, but the only way to tell is to actually sit on the bike. Every bike has a little different relationship between seat, handlebars and footpegs, and if you sit on a few you'll find some much more comfortable than others.

Save room in the budget for a helmet, jacket and gloves (at a minimum). The MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) class is money well spent.

Triathlon training...please help?

Beeba

I teach high school English at an alternative school (students who have been removed from the mainstream educational system because they have serious social, emotional, and behavioral issues). A handful of my students have expressed an interest in competing in a triathlon and I'm all for it. We've already organized a group of students, teachers, and other staff (including the principal and some of the secretary staff!) because we thought it would be a really positive experience for all of us. There is a sprint triathlon at a local park at the end of May and we decided this is our most realistic choice. We all vary in levels of skill and ability and some of us have some weight we'll need to lose (no one is seriously obese). What are some activities or plans that we can use to train together and separately?
What kind of gear will we need?
Are there any organizations we can get to sponsor us so that we can get some gear and cover our entrance fees?
Any help is appreciated!
We're really set on the sprint. We want a challenge. And most of us (save about 5 of the 20 of us) are athletes of some sort. We've got two wrestlers, three b-ball players, two baseball players, a handful of soccer players, four cyclists, and five distance runners(myself included). Among other things, we're looking for activities we can do in pairs or small groups so that the less athletic people feel welcome.
The biggest equipment challenge for us right now is that some of the kids don't have bikes and we don't know where we can go to swim as we do not have enough money to buy a membership at a gym. Just about all of us have adequate running shoes.

Also, a small handful of the kids need to quit smoking--I told them I won't even let them train with me if they don't agree to quit. Any tips anybody can offer to help with that would be great as well!

Answer
All of the answers provided are good and helpful. I would also suggest talking to your local YMCA about sponsorship. Hospitals also are willing to sponsor very active groups.

As far as equipment is concerned, you don't need a lot of fancy bikes, shoes or wetsuits to compete. I would say evaluate the course of the events.... For instance...

1. The swim. Is it in a pool or open water (lake, pond or ocean). If it is a pool swim, regular swimwear works fine. If open water swim, you will need some planning and decisions as to obtaining wetsuits (if event is wetsuit legal). Goggles are a absolute must.
2. The bike. Is it a hilly bike course or pretty flat? If it is hilly, road bikes work fine and in fact climb much better than triathlon bikes. Even if you choose to use hybrid bikes or even mountain bikes, they will still perform adequately. Helmets are required...no exceptions.
3. The run. I always tell people, the run is the most important part of a triathlon, not because it is last, but because you can tell when other people are hurting. A lot of times it is because of their shoes. Their feet do not fit as well into their shoes for the run because they rode the bike without socks. Their feet swell up from the pressure of the leg muscles working and their feet hurt when they are running. So, make sure your running shoes fit your feet well.

Other (optional) triathlon gear...
1. Swim caps
2. Sunglasses (for bike and run)
3. Breathable hats
4. Cycling Gloves

I would also recommend some books from your local library

"Your First Triathlon" is very helpful and for training....
"Triathlon Training" is also informative.

Good luck! You picked a fantastic sport to get involved in.

I'm doing a Triathlon? Tell me what you think of my transitions?

Anna

I'm going to swim in my bathing suit. Then when I get to the bike transition I'll have a small towel to put my feet on then a larger one to dry off a bit. I'm going to put compression shorts on for the bike and put my running shoes on. Put my helmet on and out I go. I won't need to change for the bike to run transistion. Does this sound good?

Answer
There is triathlon specific swimwear designed for use on the bike as well as in the water. The time you save by wearing your running shoes on the bike you will lose due to the squishy soles on the pedals. Most triathletes leave their cycling shoes clipped to the pedals of the bike and put them on as they mount up, they change into running shoes for the run after they dismount leaving their shoes on the bike. The people with experience are the ones who know what works best

Are baby bike seats safe?

L-train

My husband wants to buy one so we can take our 9 month old out on bike rides.

Have you had any luck with yours?

Answer
In some places it is illegal to have a baby on a bike until they are 1 year old. A baby can not wear a helmet until age one or later depending on many factors.

A child's neck and head are still far more likely to be seriously injured until age 3 or later.

http://www.helmets.org/little1s.htm
Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:

Maurice Keenan, MD, from the American Academy of Pediatrics [21], requested that a minimum age of 1 year be reflected on the label for helmets intended for children under age 5. This would better convey the message that infants (children under age 1) should not be passengers on a bicycle under any circumstance.

The Commission agrees with the commenter that children under 1 year of age should not be on bicycles. Children are just learning to sit unsupported at about 9 months of age. Until this age, infants have not developed sufficient bone mass and muscle tone to enable them to sit unsupported with their backs straight. Pediatricians advise against having infants sitting in a slumped or curled position for prolonged periods. This position may even be exacerbated by the added weight of a bicycle helmet on the infantâs head. Because pediatricians recommend against having children under age 1 as passengers on bicycles, the Commission does not want the certification label to imply that children under age 1 can ride safely.

Source: 16 CFR Part 1203 Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets; Final Rule, page 11726

That explains why you will not find a child helmet on the market sized for a tiny tot. You certainly do not want to ride with a bare-headed child, and in some places it is illegal. In fact, several states have laws against taking children under one year of age on a bicycle, even with a helmet.

How old should a baby be to ride in a bike seat?

blank

Like one of the seats that attaches onto the back of a bicycle? They need to wear a helmet in that, right? Where can you get helmets for babies, do they make them?

Answer
Hi, yes they definitely need to use a helmet, buy a high quality one from a reputable bike store not a toy one for use on kiddies bikes, as if they do fall they will fall from a much greater height. Bell is a good make I believe. My daughter rode in the back from about 9 months they need to have complete head control, and be able to sit reasonably still or they will throw you off balance a bit. The problem I found was I had a non recline seat and as the helmet was at its tightest setting it stuck out a bit at the back and made her head drop forwards if she fell asleep. I replaced this with a reclining seat which helped with this problem a little. She is now 2 and rides on the back no problem at all, all though she prefers to ride her own bike now. Make sure you ride in high visibility jackets and stick to quite roads, or cycle paths as much as possible - cars make no allowances for children!!!

Answer
Well firstly you need an appropriate bike so go along to a local motorbike dealership and have a look at bikes that are suitable for mx. Without knowing a bit more about you it is impossible to suggest a specific bike as there are age groups for racing and also your own size makes a difference to what bike you should get.

Get all the basic safety gear and do not skimp on the cost of a helmet.

Here is a couple of links to mx tracks so you can find the ones closest to you.

Go along to the track days or race days and have a look at the people practising and racing, then you can ask a few questions and also find out what others with your ability and age are racing and what sections are available to you.
Many tracks have their own local coaches that would offer lessons for beginners and depending upon what country you are in there may be different rulings. The country I am in a Senior who has never raced needs to do training before being entitled to race and with juniors 5 hours training needs to be completed and both need a licence to race, but that does not apply anywhere else other than Australia.
Do plenty of practice days out on the track with other riders before attempting to race and also training if you can.
