depends on you fashionable and helmets don't really go together.
go to a bike shop look at specialized, giro, bell, lamar helmets . pick what fits and functions and looks good.

Is there an adult bike helmet out there that doesn't look ridiculous?

The ones I've tried on are so huge and heavy---I get a headache from them and I feel like I look ridiculous. After many close calls with spacey drivers on cell phones or drugs, I have gotten to the point where I won't ride my bike until I get a helmet. So any name brands and model #'s that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I think people not wearing helmets on their bikes look like idiots.

If you have only tried helmets from places like Wal-Mart or Target, they are pretty heavy and uncomfortable, from my experience (had to buy a helmet in a rural area on a camping trip when I forgot mine--it was all that was available).

If you go to a bike shop or a place like REI, you can buy a decent helmet for under $50 and a really nice helmet for under $100. Giro and Bell are the two biggest companies (actually, it is the same company now). Specialized makes some nice helmets as well, and a few other companies, too.

I recommend buying one at a place you can try it on. Different brands fit differently. Some fit round heads better, others fit oval heads better. Some come in different sizes, some are universal with a ratchet on the back to tighten or loosen. If you have been getting headaches, you might be wearing a helmet that was too tight or was pinching somewhere, or it was both and too heavy as well. Occasionally my helmet will pinch a little during a ride, I think my head swells a bit or something. I unclick the ratchet in the back one notch and it is just fine.

Try on a bunch of helmets. You should barely be able to feel it. I have three helmets right now. One cost about $30, a Giro Transfer for everyday commuting. One cost $100, a Specialized Aurora--It sometimes pinches a bit if I don't adjust it just so, but it is pink, so I wear it. And one cost about $135, a Bell Sweep, I got it on sale and have never actually worn it--a spare for when I need to replace one of the others. All are comfortable, but surprisingly, the $30 is most comfortable.

I recently got back in mountain biking and its about time i start wearing a helmet before something bad happens.I like the looks of the skateboarding style of helmet,and im not thrilled with the looks of the regular mountain bike helmets,do people ever wear the skating helmets on mountain bikes? I realize the looks are not whats important but if i dont like the way it looks i probably wont end up wearing it.I am not doing much extreme stuff on the bike so i dont need a full face helmet. can anyone suggest a helmet or any info to help me out, thanks a lot

there lots of mountain bike helmets that look like skate helmets and as far as safety goes all helmets have to do the same cores so if some one tells you a $300 dollar helmets safer the the $50 dollar one they don't know what there talking about. my Buddy works for Bell and has for 6 years what you pay for is style ,fit,air dams ,waight ext a . so go get what you want to wear man a helmets better then no helmet just make sure you get a good fit or it might do you no good when it comes time to put it to the test.Giro or bell maybe 661 there good places to start looking. good luck have fun and be safe..

HI Treebark. Every helmet fits differently. The best thing to do is go to a few bike shops that carry different brands of helmets and try them on. Hopefully the sales person in the bike shop can help you select , adjust and fit the helmet properly when you try them on.
Most GIRO helmets fit me very well and BELL helmets do not fit the shape of my head, but BELL is a quality helmet maker. When you try the helmets on try and be aware of pressure points. These are area's where the pads come in contact with your head. If it feels tight and uncomfotable try a different brand or model of helmet. Most good helmets come with different thickness pads that you can switch out to make a more custom fit.
Price is also a big factor. You get what you pay for when you purchase retail. Best way is to shop around either on the web or local bike shops for last years helmets or closeouts. Sometimes you can purchase a high end helmet for half price or even more! Most helmets are the same as last years model, just a different color or graphics on the helmet.
If you purchase a lower priced helmet make sure it has the CPSC or ASTM certification sticker. All helmets have to be up to these standards of helmet safety. Remember More vents in the helmet, the cooler your head stays on hot days.

i have a helmet that is about 5 years old and was wondering if the material breaks down over time to where they are no longer safe and should be replaced.

I checked my helmets and there is no expiration date on them. I went to the Bell helmet web site and couldn't find an answer. I know if you bonk your helmet while wearing it you are supposed to replace it, as they are one crash items. I really don't know or considered if there is a life span of a un-crashed helmet. I would assume that if you don't dent or fracture the helmet that it is good for a long time, but check with the manufacturer for the official answer. When you do come back and tell us.
