Looking to buy a new road bike helmet?

horsemoney

I just got a new road bike and looking to buy a new helmet. The one I have now is more for moutain biking and find that it gets heavy while riding more than a couple of hours. I'm looking to do 60 to 100 mile rides and want to find a good light helmet that works well for road bikes. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

Answer
Horse

Yes! Look by trying on the different companies helmets first. It seems every company makes helmets tha work best for one shaped head... And not the others. There are some companies helmets I cannot wear. They hurt just to put them on. My head works great with Giro.

So,try on the various companies and get the one that feels the best. What you get for more money is more exotic materials, beet and more air vents, and better suspension systems. But I think mist of the true benefits stop after around $100!

Buying bike helmet for daughter - how to measure?

momosix

I'm trying to buy a bike helmet for my daughter online $20 or under. She's 8. She's had a couple - her last one was a Bell Youth. I'm finding there's all different shapes and styles and I don't know whether they indicate the outside, the inside, or if I can measure her head to compare. Then there's toddler, child and youth. Is child and youth the same or different? Any idea on how they determine the measurements in bike helmets? She's looking at a different style so I'm not sure how to compare. Any advice would be helpful. And if you have any opinions on good/bad bike helmets that would be helpful too. She likes to ride with no hands and stand on the bar of her bike...and we live on a steep hill...she likes to go fast...so a helmet is kinda important! Thanks! (her last one broke - that's why I'm steering towards a different style or kind). Oh ya, P.S. she has a lot of poofy hair...

Answer
They go by the INSIDE of the helmet...With a soft tape measure, measure her head around the fore-head. A child helmet will be smaller than a youth helmet.
No such thing as a 'bad' helmet as they're required to pass certain tests...
I'd try to break her of careless riding though...It's a good way to end up in the ICU.

Bicycle laws in Georgia: Is it legal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk?

Petal

as opposed to riding in the street or the bike lane? I really don't trust drivers, and I would prefer not to ride on the road, but on the sidewalk. I just got a new bike...haven't had one for 30 years.

Answer
Petal

No, a bicycle is a vehicle, and is to be ridden on the road. You must plan you rides to include riding on quieter streets that parallel the main drags that frighten you. As your handling skills and confidence improves, you will become much less fearful of the shared riding.

Ride with other experienced riders whenever possible. Hitch on the back of a group as you can. There is strength in numbers, you will learn a lot of skills, meet new friends, and can ask cycling questions.
You will get beyond this ,,,, really.

Don't forget to wear your helmet.... I know Georgia is an adult option helmet state. It is like not putting on your seat belt when you get in a car!

Recommend a bicycle helmet with low wind noise.?

jgradyc

Over 20mph or into headwinds, I can't hear at all on my bike. I've tried ear plugs, ear headbands, cotton... nothing works. Yesterday, I took off my helmet briefly. Wow! What a difference! The wind noise is coming from the vents in the helmet, not from wind hitting my ears.

I'm not going to ride in a full face or aero helmet with no vents. I've tried the slipstreamz, but as I said, it's not noise from the wind hitting the ears, it's wind through the helmet vents. Can anyone recommend a helmet that's a quiet as riding helmetless?

Answer
Get a mirror and use your sight that is what I did. A better helmet also works, the large one size fits all create more wind noise.

Bicycle Helmets and what you think?

Matt E

So, Just wondering what you all think of them? The helmet safety standards are very wierdly tested and helmets dont really protect you from a side hit like a hit from center of the top. Anyhow, if its a law in some states for children up to 16 and in other states, that even adults have to wear them, why are they not standard with the bicycle that you buy? I mean, cars automatically come with safety belts because they have been proven to help with safety during accidents, and because its the law to wear them so why arent bikes not fitted with a free helmet voucher? Besides the whole companies trying to make extra money do you know why this is not a law yet?

Answer
Helmets are NOT like seatbelts in cars, they are separate and vary widely in design and price. Furthermore, there is no national law saying every bike rider must wear a helmet. The manufacturuer of the bike isn't the manufacturer of the helmet, so how do costs get assigned? How much does the voucher cover? Does the helmet manufacturuer get paid if the bike buyer doesn't want a helmet? etc, etc.

It makes more sense the way it is. If the law says helmet everyone picks what they want/can afford (all have to meet safety standards despite cost differences). If they don't have to have one/choose not to there is no extra cost. To do otherwise puts costs up for everyone.

What do you think of the look of this helmet?

Q. A good motorcycle for a 16 year old?

Awkward Si

after a year, I've finally saved up $9000 for my first vehicle (and I'm getting another $5000 from my parents)

I've given it a lot of thought, and I've realized that I don't want to blow this money on some ugly, ratty Honda Civic or some other sedan or a truck that I won't be able to pay the gas for-I want a Motorcycle..

and before you shoot me down, I don't want it because I'll look "badass" going down the street way faster then I should or some other stupid reason-I mean I want a cool bike, but that still isn't it. My parents supported the idea after explaning why it made sense...

I just think it makes a lot more sense-I'm mainly going to be using it to get to/from school and for general transportation. School is about to start up and I can get my Motorcycle license by September, as opposed to my driver's license which I would have to wait until april to get and would have to wait until senior year to get a parking space at school..

So what do you think would be a good bike for me? Of course I first checked out the Hayabusa and other sport bikes, but after reading some other Hayabusa related questions on here, I'm guessing I should just completley rule it out.

please help!
I live in Texas and I know I have to have a Learner's Permit and I have to complete a MSF approved MSC and get the certificate before I can apply for my Motorcycle license
and I'm 5'9 and weigh about 150..if it matters...
In Texas, there's a 250cc limit if you're under 16 (15 year olds can hold a Motorcycle license), but there's no restrictions if you're 16 or over

Answer
Reasonable information finally, decent question- you give state and local laws as basis for your wanting motorcycle- at your size a 500cc two cylinder medium size makes sense, you can get a full size sport bike not just a low cruiser like Ninja or Rebel. So start with considering Suzuki Savage/S40- light , simple , can do legal limit if not much more. Yamah Virago V twins- fairly light and narrow, easy to handle. The older Honda, Suzi, 4 cylinders at 500 to 750cc- widely available, workable, still reasonable weight and highway capable. Older 900 Sportster would be close to you capabilities to handle if you like Harley- reasonable price a lot of times, the $4500.00 repurchase/trade in program has helped maintain resale value. As a school bike a lockable tail trunk that can hold books and helmet is good to have, small windshield or fairing desirable - especially if you do some 100 mile rides. Suggest getting a bike a few years old- cost and expendability if dropped, also good learning experience maintaining them. Little 5'3 lady I'm teaching on CM 400 Honda having fun now- she got her legal permit last month and is riding bike to work, has learned to pick up dropped bike by herself..

I have granddaughter 4 months old. Is there a proper, safe, bike helmet for this age?

sequim2005

They live in Florida, so it is biking is all the time. What helmet do you recommend? I am more concerned about safety not price. Cost not a problem. It takes a minute for a tumble and at this age, so vulnerable. Also what type and brand for a almost 5 year old.

Answer
Don't you mean four YEARS old? If not, this would be neglectful on your part. Babies are not meant to ride at four months old. They do not have the correct muscles. Bicycling happens after they learn how to walk. Furthermore, they do not have sufficient motor skills at four months.

About the helmet: you can search for a child's helmet either online or at a bike shop. (Wal-Mart's selection is too limited). Find one for her size or age. It is better to bring a child to get one fit, that way it stays on better, and works better in a crash.

All helmets sold have to meet ANSI II standards, you will see the proof on the packaging. The reason why helmets can cost upward of $300 is because more money buys more vents (serious cyclists like ventilation).

Does anyone know what bicycle helmet would fit a large, wide head?

its not the lightest or most expensive - but it protects and fits well

are quad bikes legal ?

Q. i see these complete lunatics driving a quad bike with people on the back and they looked "chav-ish" enough of not having insurance or helmets.

what are the UK and U.S Laws on this ?

thanks

Answer
Define "legal"? You mean to drive on the road? I don't know about the UK, but none of the states in the US allow for legal registration and licensing of a quad for street use.

That said, the specifics vary state to state in the US, but there's no law requiring a helmet or limiting passengers so long as the vehicles are being operated off road either with permission from the land owner or on public property set aside for off road vehicles.

Helmet choice, can u help?

Stu

hey, right i'll be gettin a new bike soon which also means a new helmet. now for the question. i'll be doing a good bit of mountain biking and probably some downhill stuff aswell and i'm not sure what kinda helmet to get. should i go for:

common bike helmet: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/productImages/1/9/00000116719-GiroPneumoBicycleHelmet-large.jpeg

Mullet helmet: http://www.fifecycles.co.uk/catalog/images/mullet.jpg

Full face helmet: http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7137/yh661pb7nclsideqt7.jpg

or do u have other suggestions. 1 thing that gets to me is heat. when i'm cycling i tend to get REALLY hot and when i put on a helmet it doesnt help much....neither does my mop of hair which i love so i'm not cutting it before u suggest. but that said i'm also very concious about gettin a blow to the head. i've been told should get a fullface by one person and a mullet by some1 else. i can see why the fullface is better cause it protects ur chin but would i get far too hot? have u any suggestions?

Answer
The regular bike helmet will be fine for riding on the road and most trails. The heat isn't too bad with one of these and if your real worried get one with many large air holes. The one in the picture is nice.

But for downhill you will definitely want a full face helmet. For 2-5 minutes at a time going fast down a hill the extra protection is well worth the heat.

how large should a bike helmet be?

dewgongoo

how much of my forehead and the back of my head should it cover?

Answer
To be effective as head protection, it should be worn no more than 1 finger-width above your eyebrows (wearing a helmet cocked to the back negates most of its protection). Forehead coverage is more important as most bicycle crashes are "faceplants" but back of the head protection is a bonus that more expensive helmets provide.

Helmet makers specify a range of sizes for their helmets that is based on head circumference. Once you determine the proper size, check the fit and comfort. Fit should be snug. Sizing pads are usually provided. Most importantly, try to wear the helmet to see if your head shape is compatible with their helmet shape so you avoid getting one with pressure hotspots.

How effective is an army helmet on a moped?

Jormungand

My state does not require an helmet to be worn while riding a motorcycle, and a moped is a lot less powerful than a motorcycle, but for my comfort, I would like to wear a helmet. I know where I can get a surplus army helmet (the green GI kind). I was wondering how effective that would be in a crash. I remember seeing how army helmets absorb shock as well as NFL helmets, but Google is seriously letting me down here. Thanks for the help.
Edit: I'm not being cheap because I don't think it's important, I literally have 30 dollars to my name (I am a student and the only work I could find is volunteer work)

Answer
A army helmet is made to stop bullets. They do not even have a chin strap to keep the helmet on your head in a fall. A army helmet is useless in falls.

A football helmet will stay on your head. It is designed for falls at running speed -- about 5-8 mph. A styrofoam bicycle helmet would be better than a football helmet

If you do not go past 15 mph a bicycle helmet might help.

The "DOT" sticker on a motorcycle does *not* mean that the DOT as certified the helmet. The USDOT does *not* certify helmets. All that the "DOT" sticker on a helmet says the manufacturer of the helmet says it is built to DOT specifications. But they are better than army helmets, football helmets, or bicycle helmets -- none of which are effective at all for motorcycling.

Put "motorcycle helmet DOT" into eBay and you can find that you can get DOT motorcycle helmets, delivered to your house, for under $30.

Do I need to wear a helmet!?

Sexy_Mama4

Okay so I am gonna be 14 in 2 months, and every summer we go to LBI and thts where we bike EVERY WHERE. My parents still make me wear a helmet. Helmets are soooooooo annoying and uncomfortable, I always sneak around and dont wear a helmet. My mom says tht i can get hi by a carr but i dont think tht would happen to me bc i go the back roads and not on the main roads and there are BIKING LANES at LBI where there are a MILLIONN people bikinggg and suchh... Is there anyway you think i can convince my parents for me not to wear a helmet!? or should i just not bring it up and when I am at the shore not wear on in front of them so they get the picture tht i DONT NEED ONE! Thanks
xoxo :)

Answer
You've come to the WRONG place to find the "anti-helmet" crowd. This ain't it! Statistic after statistic and even more statistics PROVE that wearing a helmet can & will save your life. Get ready for a long, detailed answer...

#1) "Helmets are soooooooo annoying and uncomfortable..." NOT if you find a good one with the proper ventilation. I own TWO. The one I use for summer riding actually forces air into the helmet & across the top & sides of the head & out the rear. This helmet is actually too well ventilated to wear in cool to cold weather.

#2) "My mom says that i can get hi by a car..." That MAY happen. But MORE bicycle "accidents" are solo falls or related to other things happening. FACT! See 1st link below. Look at the pie chart. 45% are solo falls. Only 18% involve a car or other motorized vehicle.

#3) "...the main roads and there are BIKING LANES..." So what? Think a designated bike lane will keep you safe? WRONG! What about the dreaded "Right Hook"? I quote from the website, "Right hook â Where a following motorist passes the cyclist and then immediately turns right across the cyclistâs path." This has happened to me more than once - or twice. A car (motorist) will pass a bicycle on the left & then IMMEDIATELY make a right turn DEAD in front of the bicycle. Designated bicycle lanes are fine - to a point. I'd rather ride on a street with no designated bicycle lane & take the lane...making sure the motorist is aware of me. BE SEEN - take the lane.

#4) "Is there anyway you think i can convince my parents for me not to wear a helmet!?" You won't hear it from me. IMHO - anyone who doesn't wear a helmet is a FOOL. One last fact. Your chances of surviving an accident on a bicycle are improved by 90% by wearing a helmet. Look at the second link below. Would you rather have that 90% chance on your side or against you?

Hold onto the ones that mean the most to you, and if you find that guy, go after him; you wont regret it later, what you will regret is not going after him and seeing him with another girl and then having to fight for him. Starting hockey at 18.?

Andy Young

I'm 18 and I'm really interested in ice hockey. I've always loved it since I saw my first game but it wasn't really ever available to me. I'd like to play in an IM league in college. I don't skate that well. This is Texas, most people don't. How can I get started? What am I looking at cost wise? What should my focus be as a beginner? Thanks!

Answer
You should focus on good skates and a really good helmet, your head is the most important. the rest of your gear get beginner adult stuff and upgrade as you get better. or just buy pro stock and go from there. If you plan on playing college you're gonna have to get on a fitness and learning regimen that should put you in the gym a few times a week and the ice at least three times a week.

Focus on going to adult learning skills classes. and try to learn to play with people who are better than you. I used to teach adult beginner classes and my theory still is "you play with people better than you, you develop faster" Make sure that you also go to power skating classes, your skating will improve so much with all the work they have you do.

After a few months you'll notice a difference.

FOR work outs If you ride a bike ride it even more. At my peak i would ride my bike for about 20 miles just to kick back and get some leg work in. Use the gym to your advantage, do core and arms and legs. Try to remember, that hockey players aren't Mr. Universe, but its all in the legs and thighs and butt. Look up Martin St. Louis, the photo from ESPN of him wearing just tight shorts and a shirt and you can see the muscle definition players work on. Work on balance as well, lateral movement, etc. Eat less junk food but treat yourself every now and then. No purpose in cutting off yourself from a good burger with your pals or your old lady.

Work on your skating, inside edges, and outside, and strengthen your ankles, nothing pisses me off than seeing players tie up their skates tight at the ankles not allowing the freedom players of old had with their skating ability. Even players now in the leagues who use super stiff skates, skip the top one or two laces for that ankle mobility. The stronger your ankles are, the better your turning, skating and stopping will become. when you get a pair of skates btw, make sure you get fitted and they feel good, then get them baked. You can bake skates up to two times before you break them down quickly. Make sure you do it the smart way.

Remember, you dont need Popeye arms to shoot the puck, shooting motion is using the flex of your stick and a shot begins at the skates and works up to the loading of the shaft to the blade face and letting the puck explode.

For accuracy work on playing post, grab a bucket of pucks lay them in piles on the ice and move from one pile to the other and take shots, cross bar, side bar other side bar cross bar, and so forth, lay out targets if you need, or a tutor shooter.

For gear that i use for example.

Helmet - Bauer 5100 with an Oakley modified aviator visor
when i wear shoulder pads i use Graf GS shoulder pads with the shoulder caps removed (its beer league, you're not hitting)
Elbow pads i lucked out and got Easton Synergy 700 pros
Pants i use Bauer Supreme two piece pro stocks from the Oilers
Shin pads i got some EQ Synergy Easton pros from a ECHL team sale brand new,
Skates are Graf G35 (graf is probably one of the best skates out there, dont listen to the lighter is better crap you read, Graf is top notch quality)

Make sure you buy a cup.

But most of all have fun, if you dont love it, ease up, you dont need to get to play college hockey, just play and have fun. If you have any questions join PHEW on facebook and we'll help you out, or i will, i'm the admin, i also have a youtube channel named Thinkingjack.

All the best, you'll do great! Welcome to hockey

Yamaha R6 for starter bike?

messedup

Here is the thing. I'm a 15 year old kid and I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle when I am 16. I was thinking about a Yamaha R6. Now I know I'm going to get bashed by this. The thing is, I'm not so "rich" as other people. If I were to buy a Ninja 250r, I wouldn't have enough money to buy a r6 when I'm "ready" for it. I know the R6 can send you into an object in a matter of seconds and stuff like that. I'm planning to take a Motorcycle Safety Course before getting the bike. I heard 50/50 so far. Trust me, I'm not those immature teens looking for trouble. I know when to respect things. So my question is, if I respect the bike the way it need be, then can I perhaps start out on one?
So I'm guessing I should get a ninja...would the 650r work out? Or is it the same story as with the r6? I understand the problems with starting out on such a big bike. One more question for the sake of wondering, how would a r6 or cbr600rr work out with someone was afraid to use all the power on the bike and took it super slow?
P.S. As I am talking about buying "the bike" I mean as in buying a used one, not a brand new one. And I don't mean I'm that poor to not afford the insurance and gear but I need to work with the money more efficiently.

Answer
Here is the thing bud, you are looking ahead too far.

If you cannot afford 1800-3000 for a used Ninja 250R on top of the cost of the 11,000 dollar R6 then you dont need an R6 to begin with.

And anyways, you have to go one step at a time and be logical. You need around about 1000 dollars for full gear + helmet and the 300 dollar msf course. And if you are not one of those teens that will inevitably pull the throttle, then you will surely be prepared to buy all the gear.

The cool thing is that a 250r has more acceleration and way more fun than a mustang GT. And if you think that as a 17-18 year old (see below) you cannot honestly think that you will grow out of your mustang GT in a couple months to move up to a ferrari enzo of an R6, then you are sorely mistaken.

Even if you grew out of the 250r after 2 riding seasons and you bought it used, then you would not lose any money

Additionally, it is my firm belief that as a new driver then you need more road experience than the one year of a permit before you take the plunge going around on a motorcycle. You need to make it to your full non-provisional licence before it is good for you to to get out there on a motorcycle. On a motorcycle, everybody is out there to kill you, so it is important to learn to drive defensively and look out for morons on the road without your parents with you.

Now, this is disregarding the benifits of a 250r totally.

I know you think, as the 15 year old you are, that the 250r is slow. You would be mistaken. It is fast enough to out accelerate and out turn a mustang gt like i said, and it is 100% capable on the highways. It is capable to pop a wheelie if you try, but not too powerful that you can flip it out if you accidentally slip too much throttle in 3rd gear.

Additionally, the cost is much more realistic for WHEN you drop the bike. You will drop it, frame sliders and farings are a whole lot cheaper on a 250r.
And the 250r still looks boss, so only wankers who wouldnt ride a bike would make fun of it or anything.

Oh, and the 250r is cheaper to service, gets 60+ mpg, lasts longer without expensive repairs, and is easier to upgrade and personalize to fit you best, which is better than starting expensive and not being able to afford any upgrades (or gas)

All and all, it makes more sense to get the 250r, regardless of when you think you might 'grow out of it.'

Play things as they go, there is no reason you cannot start with a 250r. period.

Good luck, be smart.
not even good intent can make you better at juggling chainsaws, so you had better start with the pins. You cant just be careful, they are still freaking chain saws.

Hope this helps you make a smart decision

EDIT: No, a 650r would not really be any better, but it is a better next step from the 250r before an all out race-style bike like the R6

A 650r has the more upright seating position, which is good, but it still has more than enough power than people should start with because it still can flip out with a sudden jerk. It is harder to find these used anyways.

In response to the wondering question, if you are even a little nervous about one aspect of a vehicle, then your driving gets worse and you are more likely to make a different mistake, or even a throttle mistake because you are more twitchy and less controlled on it.

That is another reason you should get a 250, you dont want to be totally afraid of your bike, you want the fun factor for a learning environment. And, when you get used to the ninja, then you can push it, even on regular roads. Making it EVEN more fun to ride. You can never push an r6 or cbr600rr or 650r on the road. You want to earn the knee down and other terrifyingly fun things on something that will not kill you while you try to learn because you made a 1 degree change in the throttle.

You dont or simply cant lose money on a used 250r, because they are worth 2-3000 dollars all year round with all mileage. So, you have no reason to say you want to be 'more efficient'. Unless somebody talks you out of your money, you cannot go wrong.

Hope this helps again and some more.

Can skateboard helmets be used for inline skate helmets?

Scrumdiliu

I know that there is a difference between bicycle helmets, skating helmets, skateboard helmets, and snowboarding helmets but I was wondering if skateboard helmets and skate helmets could be used as the same?

I am a new skater and I think it would be idea if I get skate pads, etc.

Also do you recommend a brand? I was looking at Walmart and they seemed pretty safe.

Answer
There are two types of helmets: Bicycle and Multisport.
The names don't really describe the differences but are based on history of their development.

Bicycle helmets are lighter and usually have more air vents to keep you cool. They are usually more aerodynamically shaped. They are designed for the types of accident you get while moving forward and are good for rec/fitness/race skating.

Multisport helmets are designed for protection when there is more risk of hitting the back of your head such as skateboarding or doing tricks on skates or bikes.
They tend to be hotter because of lack of vents. They are tend to have a round shape and cover the back and sides of the head. The lining is made to protect if you hit another object on the way down (like a rail for grinding).

All helmets are only designed for one hard hit. They may not appear to be damaged but they may not protect well against a second hit.

For your skates, get the helmet appropriate for the type of skating you will be doing.

This goes for your pads also. The pads for aggressive and freestyle skating are thicker and cover more area than for rec/fitness/race skating.

For rec/fitness/racing skating, wrist guards are really important. You will almost always slide on your hands. However, I wear aggressive glove style wrist guards because they cover more skin in order to keep it intact.
Knee pads are more optional for "straight ahead" skating. When (not if) you fall, you should be sliding instead of falling straight down. The pads keep the skin from being scraped up. I have found that the scrapes are just below the knee and not just in the area that the pads cover. However, scrapes there heal faster and are not as painful while healing than ones on your hand. Tegaderm is a wonderful way to cover this kind of scrape. It keeps it moist so that you don't have the pain that happens when dry scabs crack and peal. It also is waterproof, can stay on for a week, and can cover large areas.
I have yet to know anyone who has significantly scraped up an elbow in straight ahead skating.

Bicycle Helmet / Sunglasses problem?

rewald

I ride a road bike, and wear a Giro Eclipse helmet. I've tried several sunglasses, but the helmet seems to crunch my sunglasses down onto my nose. Anybody else experience this problem? Any ideas on a good solution? I wonder if a skateboard helmet would be better or worse?? I also wonder if any bicycle helmets come with a built-in sun shield, thus making sunglasses unnecessary. Thanks!!

Answer
The helmet may be "crunching" your sunglasses down on your nose because the lateral (around your head) adjustment is too loose. A general rule of thumb is to unfasten the chin strap and bend over. If the helmet falls off, the lateral adjustment should be tightened. I have also heard people complain that certain wraparound styles of sunglasses do not work with certain helmets. You may want to look at some cycling specific sunglasses (take your helmet with you when you go to purchase).

There are MTB helmets with visors, but they do not provide eye protection and probably won't give you the glare reduction your'e looking for. I've never seen a eye-shield type device on a cycling helmet and suspect that the aerodynamic effect might not be good.

CD with long title cracked in the car without a reason?

Ciccio Mia

Help, in the car of my best friend today, something really weird happened. We were three people in the car, two males one female, all adults, sober. Two of them are in a heterosexual relationship. At a certain point of our delightful ride, a CD with its cover (the thin case) unexpectedly cracked in two pieces without any logic reason.
The radio was playing a cd of "Metallica", "And Justice for All" and the CD in question was "Until The World Is Happy; Wake Up You Sleepyhead Sun" from the band "Small Leaks Sink Ships". It is important to say that the CD was placed inside the case of the Metallica's album.
It is a mistery that is killing us, we are struggling for the solution. We are now 5 people adult, with few booze not even tipsy. Can you please, help us?

Answer
Interesting, but there's no reason to think anything paranormal happened. I'd take a guess that stress in the plastic caused a hairline crack that eventually caused the CD to split. I know that can happen with glass if it is not cooled down slowly when it is made, I don't know if it can happen with polycarbonate (what CDs are made of), but maybe it can.

Edit:
"Polycarbonate and polysulfone are particularly sensitive to stress cracks."

To stop this happening the plastic is annealed, which is the same process as is used for glass. So it seems your CD wasn't annealed properly.

Or... maybe you put some liquid or a sticker on it...
"Polycarbonate is extremely tough as you mention. However, it is also extremely sensitive to liquids that come in contact with it and will become weakened and crack. This problem is well known and is called environmental stress cracking. It's the reason you can't put stickers on your motorbike helmet."

Is it possible to get cheap, safe and efficient private everyday travel?

Darkhoodne

I want to make spontaneous private journeys of varying long and short distances both safely and cheaply. Is this unrealistic? Must I bite the bullet and pay through the nose with a car or unaffordably-priced public transport, or put my life at risk when using a motorbike or a bicycle? Or is there another solution to this that I havenât considered?

---Long winded explanation---

This questionâs had me stumped for a couple of years. I'm unlucky enough to have friends and family that all live far away from me (but in the same country - I'm talking between 50 and 200 miles away), and also most nearby employment hubs are infuriatingly hard to get to when using public transport (not to mention the extortionate travel costs).

I live in the UK. Currently I go longer distances by train with a discount 16-25 railcard that will expire next year because I'll be too old to use it - Train prices are rising and are becoming unaffordable for frequent journeys (£30 return to go just 50 miles is stupid when I'm sure it cost £17 five years ago - I'd be paying that twice a month). Buses are slow and are also very expensive (hourly service, 2 and a half hours to go 16 miles and charging me £4 is unacceptable).

For shorter local distances I use my bicycle, but the UK's cyclist infrastructure is terrible (or non-existent) so I'm forced to use the roads, putting myself in danger from incompetent/disrespectful motorists (I've lost count of the near-misses - They're becoming more frequent with every passing year) despite following the rules of the road, learning extra tips on road safety and making myself visible from space. Putting my life at risk isn't something I'm willing to do any more.

I'd like to get a car but fuel prices are rising through the roof and are set to rise further. Electric cars don't have the range on them to do what I'd want them to do, plus the infrastructure for them isn't really in place yet. "Efficient" petrol, diesel and hybrid/electric models on the market now are extortionately priced or are still expensive to run and maintain anyway.

There are cars on the horizon that will be more affordable (or at least worth buying at high prices considering the lifetime fuel savings) and do what I'd want (like the Gordon Murray T.25), but they won't be available for a long while, and only IF they're successful.

Iâve considered buying a motorbike or a scooter, but theyâre not safe â Even with the ability to keep up with traffic Iâll still be subjected to idiots who canât drive, with only flimsy armour and a silly helmet to protect me. Transporting goods is also an issue â You can strap nearly anything to a bicycle if you know how, but you arenât allowed to do that with a motorbike.

Iâve even considered importing one of those auto rickshaw TukTuk things from India â At least Iâll be visible to other road users in one, but they seem to be a bit primitive. While safer than both a motorbike and a bicycle, they still have safety issues, and go about half the speed of a scooter for roughly the same fuel efficiency.

Are there any other options that I havenât considered? Many thanks if you read this far.

Answer
I am sure that you have heard the reference to looking at the world with the perspective of someone for whom a glass is always 1/2 empty. Life is full of compromises. You are asking for a mode of transportation that has no compromises.

We might refine that a bit by saying that you are looking for no compromises that you are unwilling to make... but if you are are willing to make compromises then perhaps they are not much of a stretch. You are willing to pay, but you want to pay yesterday's prices. There is something wrong with every form of transportation that you suggest. Very little is based upon statistics or facts but instead upon perception and supposition.

With these conditions it may be impossible to suggest an acceptable alternative. I might suggest instead that you examine instead the decision making process and do a bit more research in the outer world.

Best of luck to you, I hope you find what you need.

Do babies have to wear a helmet while in bike trailers?

Arianna

I have a 15 month old son, and I would love to take him out ridding.
But I am unsure if I need to have him wear a helmet. I have looked in stores and have found none even near small enough...
The trailer has a cage around it, and it straps in with a 5 point harness, but I dont want to take him out without knowing.

Answer
Regardless of whether or not the law requires it, you should have him wear a helmet. It will protect him and get him in the habit of wearing a helmet for when he gets old enough to ride on his own.

The reason why you haven't found one that fits is because it's not recommended that children that young be on bikes or in trailers. (and don't buy one that's big and have him "grow into it") A child that young can't take the pounding that the bumps on the road cause. You may not feel it as much, but he will. He could suffer injuries similar to "shaken baby syndrome". Is he talking yet? If not, all he can do is cry if there's a problem, and by then, it may be too late.

Also check with your local laws. Many states require cyclists and passengers to be at least 2 years old.

I know this isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but the safety and well-being of your child is your first priority.

Bike trailer for babies?

hellothere

I would like to purchase a bike trailer for babies. My baby turned 3 months last week. When can I use the bike trailer for my baby? How old should he be? I love to walk with him. I use the stroller, the baby bjorn, but would like some other options.

Answer
When my son was that age, the pediatrician said that kids under 1 year old do not have enough neck strength to hold up both their heads and a helmet. That was a long time ago, so you should consult with your own pediatrician in case theories have changed since then.

I'm a little short on money so i was thinking about the Schwinn
http://www.amazon.com/Schwinn-Thrasher-Adult-Bicycle-Helmet/dp/B00012M5MS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Should i opt for higher priced one? or would I be okay with the schwinn? I'm a broke college student so this kind of makes a difference..
Also, i'm concerned about safety so if that 10 dollars makes a big difference, I'll pay it.

Or should i get a better helmet? thanks

Answer
Notice that Schwinn helmet comes in one color only - black. It's going to get very hot in warm weather. And not just because of the color. Also it has poor ventilation. Go with either Giro helmet. The Indicator has a front visor to help keep sun out of your eyes. The Transfer does not. Best use sunglasses with that helmet.

I own a Giro Indicator. Very nice helmet. You only have one head. May as well get a good one.

What bike helmet do I need?

Ryan

Im getting into mountain biking and.just wanting to know if I should get a half shell helmet or the full helmet. Im only doing some trails nothing crazy such as crazy obstacles

Answer
One that you like the looks.

One that fits. Some fit rounder heads and some fit more oval shaped heads.

One that fits your wallet. More expensive ones are lighter and have more ventilation.

They all have to pass the same testing to be certified so the protection is there.

I would recommend a half helmet as you call it. Just go to your bike shop and tell them you would like to see their mountain bike helmets. Don't be surprised that they look just like road helmets with little visors. Some people even use the little visor on the road, and some don't use the visor mountain biking.
My point again it's up to you.

Riding a horse using a bicycle helmet?!?

kittylover

I want to bareback ride my Belgian Carlene, she is 17 hh. I have never rode bareback before. My dad goes "I don't give a @#$% about that horse go get on her for all I care!" I ride western usually and I don't wear a helmet as most westerners don't. He don't care if I die. So I am asking is a bicycle helmet too tacky on you if you ride a horse? No one will see me and I guess it's better than dying. She is 12 yrs old like me and she has never been ridden. I know this might be a bad idea but I want to ride really bad, I usually ride well broke trail horses and my dad said I could ride her until I get a 15 hh Haflinger in September.

Answer
What does Dad have to do with your behaving dangerously and acting out? You know better than that!
Wait until September to work with your new Haflinger!
Until then, train the Belgian Carlene to longe nicely, act in a mannerly way and basically sell your dad on how trustworthy you are. IF you must mount up, borrow a friends ASTM -f1163 certified helmet, or invest in one for just $40 bucks.

That 17hh is no horse to ride in any hat, being UN ridden before. Topping your head with a bike helmet is silly and obviously won't get dad's notice, nor will it absorb the shock of a fall. Its unwise and unsafe.
Have some fun and train her. Your instincts that it is a bad idea to ride are square on: Believe in your skill in training and get going the right way.

Riding a motorcycle is unsafe, even with a helmet

Lois Griff

People in cars have to wear seatbelts...........you should have to wear helmets.

But even with a helmet, motorcycles are very unsafe......if you crash, your body can go flying. How wreckless.

Regular, non-motor bikes are very beneficial and serve as healthy exercise....but still wreckless to ride them without a helmet.

Why don't you people wear helmets? Do you not mind if your head gets busted open?

Answer
You are right, motorcycles are unsafe. Some other things that are unsafe: sex, airplanes, elevators, earthquakes, sharks, boats, ocean, trains, wilderness, cars, dogs, bicycles, skateboards, drugs, running. Now if you check statistics you'll find motorcycling doesn't need you attention as much as many other things. Sex causes more injury and death that motorcycles ever could, perhaps you should spend your efforts to fix sex. What do you care if someone busts their head open, does it somehow effect your life OR does your life suck and you choose to harass people about wearing a helmet cause it makes you feel better. If you just want to help people then I'd suggest doing something about the terrible drivers that choose to crash into people with motorcycles, if they are hard at seeing then maybe they shouldn't drive, fix that if you want to make a difference. By the way, I wear a helmet and I know it's not up to me if other people do. Maybe make a deal with some non helmet wearers, You'll do what they tell you to do if they do what you want.
