hi does any 1 know were i can get a atvquad or dirt bike for £200 or less it has to be big enough for a 14 yr old thanks
eny 1 know were to get cheap quad/atv with out credit cards or ebay/paypal thanks

Answer
Sorry, but if you can only afford 200 pounds, you can't afford to ride - the only thing you'll get for that money won't be worth having - even the cheap & nasty Chinese eBay disasters are more than that.
I'm assuming you already have somewhere legal to ride (not the park, kid's playgrounds, gran's back garden etc) and decent riding gear - recent helmet, MX boots, armour, etc.
More people die on ATVs than they do on tractors nowadays, so you're better off avoiding them anyway.
You'd be better off getting back into your mum & dad's good books somehow and letting them spend a bit more to buy something decent (like a good used 4-stroke enduro bike that won't annoy the neighbours) that you can pay them back for.
Good luck

What sport bike is a better choice the R6 or CBR600 for a 1st time rider?

NoHoldemba

Answer
Alot of good answers here on your question. Neither is a good starter bike. Especially if you tend to get crazy with the speed.
Talk to other riders in your area, and not just the guys who you hang out with.
Sport bikes suck for any long distance runs. Consider what you are going to use the bike for- short hops or any hour+ long runs.

Main thing is how you feel when you sit on the bike- does it feel like 'Home' to you? Which one is easier to work the controls on, what 'fits' your body? Looks don't mean crap if you are not comfortable-and it could end up a safety issue for you.

I've been told the Honda is a bit more forgiving. And I know the Honda has been more reliable for me. I have a 21 yr old cruiser that still kicks butt when I ask it to!

A first time rider needs to take the MSF class. It may be boring to you, it isn't glamorous, but it will teach some basic survival skills. It also is a discount on your insurance premiums.
Some states allow exemptions on helmet requirements if you have taken an approved course.

Whatever you get- don't try to keep up w buddies that want to rack up some turn and burn miles! Keep away from the drunk/buzzed riding. You will be alive to look at pictures of you on the bike later on in life.
"Ride Your Own Ride" is an idea that will help you stay alive and riding. Plan on doing alot of parking lot practice to get familiar with how your bike feels and reacts with you on board. I know 20+ yr riding vetrans who still take the time to put in work on slow manuvers. Save the fancy stuff til you are more experienced, You might be around and functional to go get a bigger/faster bike that way.

First ever rider? Go with a used bike- less cost to start with, and less cost when you drop it.(And you will drop it a couple times, pretty much anyone who is a new rider has dropped it at least once!) The cost for a new turn signal on an 05 Boulevard starts at $75. I mean, would you hand over the keys to your brand new car to a beginner driver or the keys to the older car?

Accept that cars are not going to see you. Ride like you are invisible to everyone and still expect to be treated like a target. I've had folks smile, wave,, and pull out right in front of me and right into my lane. Folks don't process what their eyes see, Some hate bikes and will force you off the road because they don't consider a bike as a 'real vehicle' with a right to being on the road.
Shiny side up always,,, ride safe, and stay out of the ER's and ICU's

How do I choose a bicycle to purchase?

Jinx U

I want to buy a bike to ride to work, but I have no idea how to go about finding a good one. (Heck, I thought bikes cost $150...they do, at Target, but I'm told those aren't the best bikes.)

What makes a bike good? How do I pick one out for myself? What should I expect to pay?

I figure I don't need a mountain bike since I'll be riding on asphalt bike paths, and obviously, I'll want a woman's model, but other than that, I'm clueless.

And what about helmets, ect? I know I need a helmet, but how do I pick one out and what makes a good one?

Any advice, tips, or suggestions you can give me will be appreciated! Thanks!

Answer
Go with Consumer Reports on the bike or helmet. They are not biased by brand name or company image.

What should a simple bicycle helmet cost? I think some sports stores are way over-priced?

starryeyed

WEll, I'm on a budget, and I returned a helmet to Target for $15.00. Now, I thought maybe it was cheap, but then when I look at the $40.00 helmets at Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods, I wonder if they're the same quality, just over-priced, or if I'm really getting somethign better?
Right price? Good store in Albany, NY or national chain?
Wow, there's a lot of helpful people and good info here already! THanks to all... will be back for a best answer later, but it will be tough.
The story about gettng one's head run over by a truck was especially moving!
Thanks!

Answer
More expensive doesn't mean safer. The main thing you're looking for is if it is certified to meet certain standards of safety. The pricier helmets usually cost more for reasons other than safety: design, lighter materials, more ventilation, more "advanced" or easier strapping systems, and their higher price has nothing to do with safety. Perhaps the "lightness" feature (the helmet being lighter in weight) may be important enough for you to pay more, but I don't know that any helmets are "heavy." The important thing is to look for is a helmet that meets safety standards and that has a good fit for your head (so try it on before you buy and compare the fit of different models).

Is it safe to use a military helmet as a bicycle helmet?

bicycle helmet jpg on Bike Helmets
bicycle helmet jpg image

Robert J

Answer
Yes, it's safe.

In Europe, it's normal to see army troops using bicycles for tactical movements: http://www.combatreform2.com/swissLBIb.jpg

That photo shows the Swiss Army soldiers in field maneuvers using bicycles, and they are wearing standard-issue PASGT helmets.

The standard-issue ACH/MICH helmet currently in use by the U.S. Army also satisfies CPSC requirements for use on either motorcycles or bicycles.

Personally I think a kevlar helmet is overkill for bicycle use. Just use a Pro-Tec multisport half-cut helmet if you like that military look (since Navy SEALs and Delta Force use them to fast-rope out of Blackhawk helicopters). :-D

Answer
Are you talking about the book "Mick Harte Was Here", by Barbara Park?
The cover looks like this, if it helps: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-RHnVUrLsm08swfsANely4I6lswekh3DIWJI0_U6ApfCJgQEG4Up2v9AkRX-8v962EyNfxJMQ8flEzJEFQY4ls2XXrlE4u3VD7nHdLUZZc8IJzV84yVqHVJmh5ivhlMXzvDmPDNdYqQc/s1600/book-mick+harte+was+here.jpg

Here's a short little blurb about the book that I found here http://books.google.com/books/about/Mick_Harte_Was_Here.html?id=LIuVRfxQVtQC :

"How could someone like Mick die? He was the kid who freaked out his mom by putting a ceramic eye in a defrosted chicken, the kid who did a wild dance in front of the whole school--and the kid who, if only he had worn his bicycle helmet, would still be alive today. But now Phoebe Harte's twelve-year-old brother is gone, and Phoebe's world has turned upside down. With her trademark candor and compassion, beloved middle-grade writer Barbara Park tells how Phoebe copes with her painful loss in this story filled with sadness, humor--and hope."

What do i need to look for when buying a used motorcycle.?

bike helmet quotes on bike helmets Archives | Blisstree
bike helmet quotes image

victor g

I am interested in buying a used motorcycle and i have been looking at cycle trader and craigs list and other various places.
Since these are bikes from private sellers i want to avoid getting ripped off or buying a broken motorcycle that would cost more to fix that its price. What kind things should i be especially inquisitive , about the condition of the bike?

Answer
If you are not sure what to look for when inspecting a used motorcycle, I suggest you locate an independent motorcycle mechanic near the sellers home and have a pre-purchase inspection/check done. Approximate cost $50-100, future headaches avoided with your new baby: priceless.

If you are set on inspecting the bike yourself, here are a few things I would do (I learned almost all this from countless hours browsing motorcycle forums when contemplating the purchase of my 2nd motorcycle from a private party).

1. Check the status of the title. Verify that the bike has a clean title, unless you don't mind riding a salvaged title bike. This may be dangerous because salvage title usually means frame damage.....I'd be wary of riding a motorcycle with a damaged frame. I'm not sure if they have something like CarFax for bikes but if they do I would use that, if not try the DMV or perhaps an insurance company your shopping quotes with can verify.

2. The owner is just as important as the motorcycle itself. Is the owner helpful in answering all your questions? Does he/she know the history of the vehicle? Do they have maintenance records/logs? What is the overall impression you get about them selling their motorcycle? You want to buy from someone who makes you feel comfortable and will work with you, good signs that the bike has been taken care of.

3. Do an initial walk-around of the motorcycle. Any noticeable damage to the fairings, handlebar ends, levers, exhaust, pegs? Basically you are trying to see if the motorcycle has ever been laid down/crashed. Are the fairings/tank original or have they been replaced? If so, ask the seller why.

4. Is it modified? Heavy modification usually means the owner has ridden the vehicle hard, not necessarily a bad thing if it has been taken well care of, but it can be a sign that it has been abused. Does the owner have the original factory parts? Do the modifications look like they were installed properly, or just a hack job?

5. Forks/shocks. Inspect the front forks/shocks closely. Are they leaking at all? Do they look worn/extremely dirty? Do the same for the rear shock.

6. Have the owner start the bike for you, stationary. Look for any smoke coming from the exhaust. A little bit of visible white smoke is ok, dark/blue smoke or any other strange looking emissions coming from the tailpipe are a definite bad sign.

7. Listen to the bike at idle. Does the engine sound like its healthy or unhealthy? If you are looking at sport bikes, they tend to have a sort of a 'lumpy' idle, meaning it bounces around a little bit, but nothing too erratic. When the engine is warm, have the owner or yourself rev it a little bit, listen for any odd noises coming from the engine. If you hear something strange, don't be afraid to ask the owner to explain what the noise maybe. He will either fess up if there is a problem he did not disclose or try to lie, which you should be able to detect fairly easily.

8. If the seller will let you and you are comfortable take it for a test drive. I would try to engage each gear at least 2-3 times during the ride to check for problems w/ the transmission. Vary the rpm range to check for hiccups in the engine. Is it difficult to shift? Is it harder than usual to find neutral? How does the steering feel? Do the brakes do an adequate job of slowing down the motorcycle or are they squishy and slow to grab? Does all the instrumentation work?

9. Does the seller have the original paperwork/manuals/spare keys?

10. Do not let the seller negotiate his/her used gear into the deal, unless it is something you want and it is the correct size for you. A quality helmet and gear should be the first thing on your list, BEFORE the motorcycle.

11. See if the registration is current and if any registration fees are due. You will also have to pay California sales tax to the DMV when you go to transfer the title to your name, based upon the selling price of the motorcycle.

How much effort would it take to get a motorcycle engine and turn it into a go kart engine?

hehewhosth

I have a little bit of engine knowledge (took a small engines class last year in school). but the ultimate goal is to make a go kart out of a motorcycle or dirt bike engine. any and all input is welcome.

more info: I was thinking a 250 2 stroke but i am extremely open to change.

Answer
Not much effort at all. You can cannibalize a lot of parts from the donor motorcycle. The biggest problem is getting the final gearing right. The circumference of a go-kart tire is much smaller than a motorcycle tire.

However this could be accomplished with a jack shaft.

This has already been done so you won't need to re-invent the wheel. There is a go kart racing series that already uses motorcycle engines. Open your favorite search engine and search for "motorcycle engine go kart" without the quotes.

There is one minor issue that you may find is that a 2 stroke motorcycle engine doesn't produce much torque at low RPM. This may be an issue when starting off or if you need to go slow. But look out once you get the go kart moving. You may want to wear a full face helmet to keep the bugs out of your teeth because you will consistently have an ear to ear grin on your face.

One other issue you may encounter is that you could very easily over-power your go-kart. If you use too much motor you could easily build a little 100+ mph death trap. Make sure your go kart, your riding area, and your driving abilities match the performance capabilities of your go kart.

Another option I have seen is to use a snowmobile engine and belt drive system. I have seen both. And both were wicked fast.

Do lots of internet searches as there are millions of designs online. Short of that, visit as many cycling stores as you can and try on helmets.

Don't feel too self conscious about it though.. if everyone has to wear a helmet, everyone will be in the same boat as you.

does a 13 year old girl need to wear a bike helmet?

Aubrey

Does a 13 year old girl need to wear a bike helmet when she is riding her bike in the neighborhood? Also when she rides its usually with a friends so its not like she is by herself.

Answer
Aubrey

Yes, a helmet is critical t your safety. I investigate accidents. Most cycling accident do not happen with cars, but accidents where the rider errors. I recently had a critical head injury where there was NO speed involved. The rider simply slipped while standing on a wet sidewalk! Man of these riders were experienced and had good cycling skills. They just made a simple (but ultimately critical) riding error. It happens in a split second.

I have ridden at a high level my entire life. A helmet has saved me twice! You will never be as good a bike handler as the pros...l yet they wear one each and every time they go out for a ride. GET THE HINT?

am i a good writer, please read this is not the whole thing but the begining of a book?

Mizz Kitty

I opened my eyes after two minutes of the persistent buzzing sound of my alarm. I decided that it was annoying enough to muster up the ambition to sit up and turn it off. I eventually clicked it off, with my eyes still closed, I then laid back down in my sleep-warm bed. I must have fallen back asleep because, my mom came in and rudely turned the light on, saying,
âUgh! Babette Louise Zeller! Get your butt out of that bed,â
âBut mom! Why?â I replied sleepily.
âYou know that today is Sunday, we have church today, oh
by the way we are riding the motorcycle,â
âI really donât want to go to church today, mom,â
âPlease come with me honey, Iâm sorry that I yelled, youâve just been sleeping for an extra half hour,â
âItâs ok mom. But do I still have to go,â
âYes Bette, you do, I mean, what if this was the last time we ever got to go to church. I really want you to come, please,â
âOk mom, Iâll come,â
My mom smiled, âthank you,â she said.
I smiled back, and dragged myself up out of the bed.
I couldnât decide what to wear, mom really needed to do laundry, I settled on a maroon turtleneck with a teal tank top on top, and jeans. I also pulled on my boots. It was a nice enough day, humid, but thatâs just Missouri. I brushed my black cornsilk hair, and parted it into two segments. I then I took one of the pieces in my hand and sectioned it in to three bits and went on to slip the piece on the far left onto the piece in the middle section and then take the piece on the right and I placed it on the piece that started out on the left. I continued this until I had a long braid that trailed to my waist, I repeated this on the other side of my head. I now had two long braids, my mom said that this was my Indian look. I twisted the two pieces together and slid the leather hair cover that I had for the days that we rode the motorcycle.
âIâm ready mom,â I told her as I sat down in the den.
âOk, honey, Iâll be there in a minute,â she replied, her voice echoed in the hallway. I called my cat up onto my lap,
âHey there, Suki,â I said to the kitten as I petted her in between her shoulder blades, she purred and jumped down.
I fell back asleep in the leather recliner.
âCome on sugâ time to go,â my mom said as she ran her fingers down my shoulder and patted my hand.
âHmm?â I asked with one brown eye open.
âLetâs go,â
âOk,â
I got out of the chair and walked down to the garage, I grabbed my iPod and then placed the earbuds in my ears, and turned it on. I put my helmet, my vest, and finally my gloves. We boarded the bike and left. The 20-minute ride to church was relaxing; I listened to my iPod, now playing a Justin Timberlake song.

Our church was a little church, a simple structure, no fancy architecture, just a cozy little church, with three classrooms in the right wing that was off to side of the sanctuary. There was a kitchen and a large meeting room on the left wing, the sanctuary was in the center. We entered the sanctuary and said hello to the old people. I must say that we were the most controversial members of the church. In a town with a population of only 978, only 76 people that attended our church, we were the only bikers.
After only two minutes or so of the pastor preaching, the tremors began, they were just the aftershocks from the earthquake that we experienced about 4 days ago. We all gasped and even the preacher was silent. I saw that he was holding the golden cross that hung from his chest.
Then the lights went out.
My friend, Jeannie was in the bathroom, I figured that she was probably scared, so I went to check on her, I was scared that she had had a seizure because she had epilepsy, and flickering lights triggered it.
âMom, I think Jeannie is in the bathroom, and Iâm going to check on her, ok,â I said to my mom who was shuddering.
âOk, ji-ju-just b-be s-afeâ my mom replied.
I ran out of the sanctuary, âJeannie!â I yelled.
I went to the bathroom door, it was locked, I rapped at the door with my middle finger,
âJeannie!â I called to her. I called and called, but no answer.
If I get an e-mail address, I will send each new chapter, as it comes
It is also just the rough draft, so lay off.

Answer
Okay as a published writer and screenwriter let me see if I can help. First of all I would say it gets your attention, it holds you and it leaves you wanting to know what is going to happen next. The second thing is not as flattering since I would say it feels rushed, (perhaps by the context of which you had to post) but the flow is not quite right. Third thing I would say the fix is easier than you might think. What are you reading? In other words, you read what you enjoy reading so I will presume you are writing what you enjoy writing.

Compare the style. Now some writers have a hard time of realizing they are TONE DEAF and cannot see the difference in their writing and their favorite author. I constantly get compared to my favorite and I am never surprised by that.

That said, the secret to good writing really is GREAT READING. Good luck and see you at the top!

I want to start mountain biking and don't know too much about it. Should I buy and expensive bike from a bike shop or go to a retail store and buy what looks okay to ride?

Answer
I think you can look forward for a 300 to 400 hardtail (bike with only front suspension), and maybe 100 bucks in gear (helmet, gloves and maybe a camelback or backpack hidration gear).

Go to a bike shop, they know more their stuff than a retail shop. It will really make a difference. Most retail stores salesman (not all of them, but most of them, I think) will try to sell you what they have on the floor, rather than showing you a well fitting bike.

Trek, Specialized, Giant, GT makes very good entry bikes. Don't worry too much about componentry for now. Shimano has different 'quality' stuff, the food chain is as follows, from lowest to most expensive: Altus, Acera, Alivio, Deore, LX, XT and XTR. It also has some stuff with numbers. Anything from Alivio and up is very workable, Altus and Acera, will do but probably you will need to upgrade in the future.

Unless you do freeriding (jumps and realy crazy stuff), V brakes are probably your best bet. Some cheap bikes have disc brakes, but probably not worth it and only will make your bike heavier.

Also, ask in the shops if they have begginer clinics and group rides. Some shops do offer them, and they're a great way to start and learn the basic stuff. It's better to start riding with the right bases, than trying to learn everything by yourself, and then try to correct bad habits.

Good luck!

Aside from a helmet of course lol.

Answer
Get equipment made for motorcycle riding, so you've got a helmet and face shield to start.
Gloves to protect fingers/hands in a fall. I buy gloves on the higher end, closer to race gear, that have double leather and gauntlets, double wrist wraps and hard sliders on palms and knuckles.
Jacket with shoulder, elbow and back padding, and wrists that zip or wrap up. I find the textile jackets more comfortable but you can also choose leather.
Leather boots, again for m/c, preferably higher tops to protect ankle and shins.
Pants with knee and hip padding, again textile or leather.

Story of a boyfriend sacrificing his own life for his girlfriend?

I read somewhere but I forget the entire story. Its about a boyfriend sacrificing himself for his girlfriend. Their motorcycle lost control of the brakes but the boyfriend decided not to tell the girlfriend. Instead he asked the girlfriend to wear his helmet, kiss him and hug him. Later when the motorcycle crashed the boyfriend died while the girlfriend survived because she was wearing the helmet. I read it from a myspace page. Have anyone heard of this story and have the link to the whole story? Thanks in advance!!!!

I am in the market for a bicycle helmet. I am a casual cyclist...I just have a mountain bike that I don't ride too often, so it doesn't have to be a "professional" one. I just want something comfortable with excellent protection and something that has adequate ventilation. Can anyone recommend a good helmet for someone like myself?

Answer
You should be able to get a good quality helmet for $40. I would look for one with the foam molded into the shell. They hold up a little better. Most helmets are well vented . THey also should have a retention system.

The most import is fit. Go to a bike shop and try several models on. They should stay in place fairly well if you shake your head without the chin strap tightened. If you feel a pressure point, you may want to look for something else. It will get very annoying after a couple of hours in the saddle.

The Giro Transfer goes for under $30-$40 i in molded, has a retention system and is well vented. I am sure there are other comparable ones. But a comparable Bell or other branded helmet should have similar features for about the same price. Just buy the one that is most comfortable.

How much does a ticket for not wearing a bicycle helmet cost in NC?

Q. I am 14 and i just want to know how much a ticket is for not wearing a bicycle helmet cost, cuz i`ll ride my bike down the road a bit then just come back and forth, and if a cop car comes by, will he give me a ticket, a warning or go by? I know a helmet is for safety and all, but you see people riding a bike without a helmet alot.

Answer
Most of the time they will just let you go off on a warning (if they even say something to you) but if they continue to see you riding around with no helmet after multiple times of warning, they can give your parents one. Usually in neighborhood areas they won't even bother you, it's usually when you are riding on main roads they get concerned. It's younger children and motorcyclist they are more strict with. The cost all depends, most of the time for something like that, as long as your parents provide you with a helmet after the ticket is issued, the judge will just throw it out and dismiss the case.

I have a 5 year old son and I would like him to get into ama racing. I know it is expensive, money isn't much of a problem, but I was wondering what steps I need to take to get him started in it, what age he start, and just things about gear and just general things i should know.
thanks!

Answer
First of all, make sure that HE really wants to do it and it's not just you wanting him to do it, because once you're in, it's hard to get out.

You say he's 5? I think that's a little too young to start actually racing. He's the perfect age to get practiced up so that he can race when he's a little older. I started riding when I was 6 and started racing when I was 11. He could probably start racing when he's 7 or 8 if he really wanted to.

Getting into the racing crowd: Find out where some tracks are around where you live and he can start riding there and get the feel of what a racing track will be like. From there, go to your local dirt bike and ATV dealer and talk to them about local motocross leagues. They should be able to give you some names of people to get ahold of in order to get into racing.
If he doesn't already have a bike, figure out his weight and height and get him a bike he can use for practice, but as he grows, he'll need different bikes.

Gear: For gear, you're looking at up to $2,500 worth of gear. Once he gets into AMA, he'll have sponsors who will pay for some gear and bike stuff. Here's some ballpark prices on the gear he'll need:
Riding Pants: $50+
Jerseys: $40+
Helmet: $100+ (for a real nice one)
Goggles: $25+
Gloves: $10+
Boots: $90+
Racing & Practice bikes: The price of bikes depends on the model, motor size, etc.
Then you also have the price of gas, oil, bike parts, etc.

I think that's about all you really need to know to get started. Hope I helped!!
Good luck to you and your son!

why can't you buy bicycle wheels/rims at most "Regular" stores?

promethium

"Regular" stores refer to places like: Costco,Walmart,Target,Kmart,Sports Authority/Gart Sports, and Big5. most of these retailers SELL bicycles,tires,seats,inner-tubes,racks,helmets,lights,water bottles, bicycle locks, but for some reason, not even one of these places sells the actual rim. why not? why do you have to go to some designated bicycle shop (where of course the rims cost $100+ each). I understand that they have to be strong enough to support the rider's weight. and I get the fact that you definitely want a quality set of rims. but bike shops can sometimes be out of the way, in terms of distance from one's residence. why can't rims/wheels be sold in the above retailers?

Answer
The so-called bicycles they sell in discount stores use the CHEAPEST components possibly found. Many times these parts aren't even listed on the suppliers website. Shimano (for example) makes lots of these no-name derailleurs for Wally World bikes.

On top of that...if you buy in HUGE quantities, you get HUGE discounts. Now - who has more pure buying power - a multi-billion dollar company like Wally World - or the local bike shop? That's another reason.

Reason 3...Discount stores don't want to be bothered with selling individual specific parts. Yeah...they sell tubes & crappy tires & lots of other crappy after-market parts. But they're not going to get down to the nitty-gritty of selling individual wheels, shifters, derailleurs, brake calipers, etc. Too much hassle for their feeble-minded, minimum wage "associates" to handle.

Lastly...the parts you get at a REAL bicycle shop are often twice as good, if not ten times better than the original part! I remember the first time I walked into A&M Bicycle shop in St. Louis. It's a small one-man shop. A customer was picking up a repaired bike & asked Karl, "Good as new?" Karl sarcastically replied, "Nope...(long pause)...better. I don't use those crappy parts Wal-Mart installs on bikes from the factory."

Buy a good bicycle from the start & you won't need any replacement parts.

2011 Raleigh Sojourn - now well over 2,000 miles on the bike. It hasn't spent a single day out of service. NO flat tires - ever. Not one single breakdown. Total maintenance cost so far? Two new tires when the originals wore out - replaced with the same kind, and an eight dollar bottle of chain oil. Cost of the bike? $1,200 + tax. Worth EVERY single penny!!!

Is it safe to use a military helmet as a bicycle helmet?

bicycle helmet jpg on This video, filmed in Russia by a very lucky biker, shows what happens ...
bicycle helmet jpg image

Robert J

With her trademark candor and compassion, beloved middle-grade writer Barbara Park tells how Phoebe copes with her painful loss in this story filled with sadness, humor--and hope."

do i have to wear a helmet when bike riding?

bicycle helmets mandatory on Mandatory helmets: wrong or right?
bicycle helmets mandatory image

i live in melbourne, australia and im 16 years old. do i have to wear a helmet when riding a bike. at what age do you not have to wear a helmet?
also do you get a fine if you dont wear it?

Answer
In Australia, bicycle helmets are mandatory in all states and territories. Compliance is high but varies by area, with some cities over 90% and rural areas much lower. In the State of Victoria cyclists' head injuries declined 41%. There were 36% fewer child riders on the road, immediately after the legislation passed, but perhaps more adult riders. Changes in ridership may or may not have been related to the passage of the laws, and the road culture in Australia is unique to that country. (No similar effects have ever been documented in the US.) Injury reduction was below expectations, but still spectacular. Hospital data from Western Australia show that the number of intracranial injuries was cut in half with increased helmet use, while head injuries were less serious, and hospital stays shorter.

How come no one wears helmets anymore when riding bicycles and motorcycles?

I'M NOT ON

most of the people I see on bikes and motorcycles now dont wear helmets. i had seen one guy on a motorcycle with a helmet hanging off of the back. do they think they're too cool to be wearing helmets or something? even kids dont. when i was little i had to wear a helmet, elbow pads, knee pads, and hand pads.

Answer
Most states have a mandatory motorcycle helmet law because of the speeds involved, and cops do pull over motorcyclists to issue summonses for not wearing a helmet-- It is considered the same kind of boneheaded offense as not wearing a seatbelt in a car.

The consequences of not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle are obvious.. Just ask the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. He required extensive maxillofacial reconstructive surgery after crashing his motorbike without a helmet.

Bicycles on other other hand are largely discretionary.. Most states have a bike helmet law that's mandatory only for those under 18, and even then it's rarely enforced.. I guess cops regard those offenses not worth the time to write the ticket for, kind of like jaywalking. The speeds involved in bicycling probably makes bike helmets less critical than motorcycles.

This Is my first triathlon so I dont know much thanks!

Answer
Swim gear: www.Swimoutlet.com You can get a pair of compression jammers for $15 and Sporti or Clubswim S2 goggles are identical to Speedo Vanquishers but are half the price. I'd get one for training and one for race day.

Bike gear: Figure out what size you need for a bike if you don't have one already. If you know what you need with regard to size, www.bikesdirect.com is a good place to get an entry level roadie. Get your local LBS or better yet a cycling center to give you a bike fit on it for $100. Or even better, borrow a bike from a friend. You're going to need a cheap $12 bicycle helmet from Walmart -- can't race without one.

Run Gear: Go to a local running store (Mom and pop shop) that has a treadmill where they can analyze your run form and suggest a running shoe. OR the cheap way is to go to any clearance section, try on a pair of running shoes. Run the length of the store a few times and if you feel ANY pressure points go to the next pair.

Get a race belt to put your race number on -- saves 30 seconds in transition and a cheap wal-mart pair of sunglasses for $10 for the bike.

The cheaper you can go on the race the better. Aero wheels, aero helmets, $5000 carbon frames, gear geeks and weight weenies alike are all hype. If you're within 5 minutes of a podium finish then $5000 will help. Until then, your limiter is the engine.

Separate power sorce for motorcycle lights?

I have a ninja 250 that I would like to add lights too. Ideally I would like easy aaccess to the light switch, and I wouldmlike a low maintanace battery. I do not want to plug it up to the battery out of fear that i might accedentally leave them on and drain it. Jump stating a bike can be tedious worse whenyou dont carry tools.

I do not want somethimg that will inly last 10 hours either then have to replace or recharge. Mabey something rechargable wouldnt be a bad idia

So any idias
I would like to use leds
Strips

Answer
see if you can fit a 'gel' battery into the Ninja stock tray- they are about 10% greater capacity than wet acids of same size. This will give you some reserve. LED strips at some accessory shelves are sold as individuals cheap or simple strips slightly more expensive- but wired as 12 volt and have a simple plug in that I've seen as same as a late model taillight bulb or a 4 pin trailer light coupler, some just a couple red and black wires to attach by whatever. Check your wiring diagrams and look for the headlight main fuse block pin/post or a accessory plug- on some cycles a fuse position is available for a 5 to 10 amp/60-120 watt circuit that can handle a cigarette lighter or accessory plug for radios or trouble light- use this as a main power to the lights and have a relay with power from the ignition switch so the LED strips won't get main power unless ignition is on- or wire from headlight or perhaps with diodes from the main charge wire so LED won't be on unless engine running. simple relays draw only 3 to 5 watts-1/2 amp on 12 volt systems , the running/fog lights systems have that as the draw figure for the relay to switch figure- main light will have a 55 watt for H3 bulb so 2 running lights will be 110 watt 8-9 amps draw. LED may have 2 watt/1.2 volt each so 10 would be about 20 watt/12 volt on the strip- this from a 8 foot clearance strip for trailers for night end width that had a 'use 25 watts for wiring calculations' figure and a 3 to 5 amp fuse. A 18 volt rechargeable tool battery is used by some bicycle riders with a head lamp and a tail light, some use the 12 volt or 14.4 batteries, I have a work light using the same 18 volt battery as my cordless drill. This battery is about 2.5x4 inch x 2.5 inch height-- Ninja has a small tool tray in tail in back of seat that might fit this battery and switch, wires to LED strips or a trouble light. Some of the Ninjas locally have the little moped tail trunks mounted to their tails- won't hold a full helmet but bigger than the under seat and mini tool try space- the scooter shops got a lot of the little plastic trunks cheap with universal mount kits so they have found a use. The little mopeds are running around with milk crates twice as big as the tail trunks, the replaced trunks are going onto sports bikes to hold raincoats so see if a cordless tool Ni-Cad battery will fit into your tool tray if nothing else.

What is the exact difference between the bicycle helmet and a motorcycle as my neighbors son wants to drive a motorcycle with his bicycle helmet.I need to know any information .and if anyone can help regarding .it will be helpful.since i just want to let her know that its not safe and she needs to stop him by giving her the full information.

Answer
we should intelligently consider the proper helmet for the right sport, and enforce our decisions on the youth who can suffer these injuries. If they don't take care of simple things. There are helmets made especially for various activities. Bicycle helmets that are great for riding a bike for pleasure are not adequate for motorcycle riding. There are specially made helmets for motorcycles that encompass more of the head. Complete helmets that cover the ears are also necessary for dirt bikes, pocket bikes, and scooters. Many have face masks with eye protection included.

What usually happens if you have to stay in the hospital for observation?

Jackie Bro

for a head injury. can you be observed at home?

Answer
You can be observed at home, but if you start to show signs of bleeding or pressure in the brain, it will be an awful lot longer before you get help. This significantly increases the chance of death or brain damage.

In most cases, the odds of a further problem are very low, probably less than 1%. But the consequences of not being in the hospital when your brain starts to bleed or swell can be pretty serious.

If you have symptoms of a severe head injury such as persistent headache, vomiting, or less of consciousness for more than a minute at the time of the accident, you really want to be in the hospital if things go wrong.

There was an 8 year old boy in Sacramento who fell off his bicycle, no helmet, seemed to only have cuts and scrapes. Doctors noticed that he had loss of memory around the time of the accident and the doctors felt that his speech and reasoning didn't seem right. He did stay in the hospital for observation, had a brain bleed, and it took immediate surgery to prevent serious brain damage.

Let the doctors do their job.

Is traveling on Santorini by Vespa safe?

bicycle helmets visor on Predator Motorcycle Helmet | Gear | CoolPile.com
bicycle helmets visor image

Leilani an

We want to "tour" on our own. Are there a lot of cars or is it relatively safe on a Vespa ?

Answer
Touring on a vespa is just as safe as good as you are driving a bicycle.. If you can do it with care and
common sense you have nothing to fear apart from the occasional tourist driving a car in the wrong side of the road.
Locals knowing how hazardous your driving can be, are extra careful with all motorcycle riders and always give you way. The majority of accidents happening in the summer are from tourists driving bicycles and their stupid in most cases tricks.

Keep that in mind and drive always with a helmet with visor and goggles or glasses if one is not provided.. The crashing of an insect on your eye while driving is something that happens in almost every other kilometer you drive. Drive conservatively and non- aggressively and all will go well.

Can I get charged If I'm wearing my motorcycle helmet?

XLR8

So here is the deal, im on my motorcycle and this cop is chasing me down on his bike... like bicycle, yeah. So I got away pretty easily but have on my helmet with a tinted visor. Not sure why he was chasing me down, prob my exhaust is too loud.

Anyways I heard as long as you never take off your helmet or show you face to the officer, they can't charge you because they can't identify you. Is this true?

Answer
Geez, so many do-gooder, law-and-order types on here today. Riding away from a cop on a bicycle? Are you kidding? That's a no-brainer. See ya!

If you get the knock on the door, you say that several of your friends were taking it for a spin and you have no idea which one he tried to stop. He can still charge you, but most judges will throw that one away when you tell him any one of several friends were riding that day. Any cop on a bicycle that's dumb enough to try to stop any motor vehicle deserves what he gets.
