what inch size mountain bike is good for a 5 foot 2 inch 14 year old boy, 115 pounds?

joanne v

Answer
take him to a bike shop and they can help him find the right type of bike. they can also help him find a size that not only fits him now, but after he's grown taller.

also make sure you get the right type of bike for the style of riding he is going to do. if he is truly going to be mountain biking with it you'll need to get something much more sturdy than if he is going to be biking in town to freind's houses and such.

don't forget to get a good helmet! he's squishy and trees and cars are not!

Best Beginner BMX Bike For 14 year old for under £150?

Q. Hey its my birthday today/yesterday and im getting a bike. I want a BMX so i can do simple tricks like ENDO, 360, bunny hops, wheelies, and that sort. I can't go over board with the price, so £150 seems like a good budget. I would want one that would last atleast untill i can get a job and earn my own money to move onto advanced bikes. 2 years minimum. I don't really mind colour as long as its not too crazy. Thanks
10 Points for good answer, need it very soon!!

Answer
You Should get the Eastern RamRodder For $250 bucks (with tax and helmet) so im guessing the bike alone in Euro Dollars would be £125

Is it ok to ride a bike on the sidewalk without a helmet?

Mika

so im 14 years old, and i wanna exercise or tone my legs with riding a bike on the sidewalk for like 30 minutes and the problem is i dont wanna wear a helmet nor i dont have one.And is it legal not to? or the police will chase me and give me a ticket? Pls answer asap. Thanks !

Answer
Yea I hate helmet hair too. That's an interesting question and not easily answered. A random check of ten states found that only one (Georgia) actually prohibits bicycles from using the sidewalk. Some cities and towns have local ordinances prohibiting sidewalk use in certain areas such as the downtown business area. As for helmet laws, most refer to "bicycle use in public areas" which would include sidewalks. By the way, riding on the sidewalk actually increases your risk of injury from a car due to intersections and cross walks. Check out the stats in the link below.

Whats the Best helmet camera?

Mason

I'm moving to Idaho and I'm going to be snowboarding a lot and doing a lot of dirt bike riding. I want to get a helmet camera but I don't know what to get. I know there's gopro but are there any other good brands?

Answer
There are multiple brands and models available I've included all of the major brands but there are others out there. Ultimately your personal needs, preferences and of course budget will decide for you. I've listed the brands in order of my own preference based on their top end model)

Brands:

GoPro: www.gopro.com

Contour: www.contour.com

Sony: www.sony.com

Ion: www.ioncamera.com

Drift: www.driftinnovation.com

JVC: www.jvc.com

Polaroid: www.polaroidstore.com

Chili Technology: www.chilli-tech.com

(In my opinion the GoPro is the best currently on the market given the video and picture quality options and frame rates available. Also there is the huge range of mounting accessories which are available and especially the WiFi remote and the app. This makes it in my opinion the most versatile especially as it is not a shotgun style camera so it can be mounted on the front of a helmet or off the front facing the wearer.)

I would also advise against buying a Hero 2 as they may be slightly cheaper but its a false economy. Firstly the lens design on the Hero 3 is much better (clarity wise) and more versatile than the Hero 2, hence why GoPro had to produce a separate dive housing for the Hero 2 (lets face it your not going to be snowboarding all of the time). The new premium accessories are not compatible eg. the LCD touch bacpac. The Hero 3 is half the size and weight of the Hero 2 so when it is mounted to your head you will really notice the difference. The Hero 2 is also not WiFi enabled you need to buy a bacpac for it, making it even bigger and heavier. GoPro have also announced plans for some serious upgrades to the WiFi app which will include transfer of video captured and playback, making WiFi a much more useful feature.

Helmet Recommendation?

The Wild C

I'm looking for a helmet that basically looks cool, one thats not so huge and makes you look like a dork, and has a good crash test rating. I need it for long distance and local biking.

Answer
The weight weenies, and ventilation conscious will flame me for this (as well they should), but I am very partial to my Pro-Tec Ace Dig. It fits well, it's not too heavy (compared to the hardhat I'm used to wearing), it's doesn't make me look like I just got off a space ship, and best of all, it's TOUGH. Most helmets are toast after any kind of impact. The Pro-Tec Ace Dig is a multiple impact helmet designed to take big hits. Did I mention that it's pretty darn stylie? You can pick one up for about forty five bucks from JensonUSA. Drawbacks? Heavy, hot in the summer, and it might get you negative attention from snobs. Most of my riding is on the dirt, and I live in a small town where everyone hates bikes, so nobody really gives me any crap about it. Pro-Tec also makes a helmet called the cyphon, which is lighter, with better ventilation. Good Luck.

where can i buy a western flyer bicycle?

max

or something similar. besides ebay. with gas prices where they are- im looking for a cute bike

Answer
I found a few Tandem Western Flyers on the web sites but this is not what you want. The Western Flyer was a retro Schwinn bike that is a Beach cruiser. It is heavy and slow and can't go up a hill. It's a poor choice for a go to work bike, but as a beach cruiser it's cool. I have a retro beach cruiser like that and it's fun. You can ride on the sidewalk with them because they are slow.

I have a Bianchi Milano I just love. It's light and has a Euro look. It has seven speed Shimano Nexus gears. They are called planetary gears and shift inside the hub so your chain never moves. Very easy to use. These bikes are about 500 dollars. It is a version of a Hybrid bike. Trek makes a good one and so does Specialized and Giant who own the Schwinn name.

The best thing if you want to use it as a work bike is to get a Hybrid bike. They sit upright and allow you to change gears for hill riding. Any Bike shop has them. Even Target,Costco and Wall-Mart have them. I would always suggest a bike shop because they know how to put a bike together properly and size you as well. The bike has to be the right size or it will be a pain in the back to ride. I shop at the Specialized stores because they really fit you. I have also purchased a bike at Two Wheeler dealer in Brea California and they fit my sisters bike perfectly. They make women's specific bikes that have the geometry for a woman's build. That was important because she is 4'11". Not a bike you can buy off the shelf.
My sisters bike was a Trek 1500 or 2000 I don't remember. It was a road bike not a hybrid. She prefers the road bikes like I do. But the Hybrids are easier to use for work purposes. My sister did the Aids ride 550 miles from San Fransisco to Long Beach. Unfortunately she was hit by a car last week, on her way to work, by a 17 year old driver on a cell phone. She did stop but it's illegal for a minor to be on a cell phone while driving. My sister was making a left and the girl ran her over. She is in the hospital with a L4 fracture and a compound fracture of her arm. Her face was road pizza and had to have plastic surgery. Happily after two surgeries so far,she is recovering quickly and can walk in her back brace.
So first thing about riding, learn the rules of the road. Don't ride on the wrong side of the road. Generally you do what Motor cyclists do, except you ride on the far right of the road but not in the gutter. You can make a left just like a car or motorcycle but be careful that you are seen. I always make myself seen and make sure the cars can see me. Wear bright colors usually bike clothes. Bike pants make it easy on your butt. A good bike shop will help you with that. Never wear Black it is hard to see and don't ride at night even with a good headlight cars will never see you. Even with all that I have had drivers throw things at me. I was hit by an Ice cream cone and it felt like a hard ball. Some idiots think it's funny to slap you on the butt as they drive by. This can break your pelvis and rip their arm off.
Beware of Trucks their mirrors hang low and can hit you in the head if they are too close ripping your head off. And open car doors are a problem. Always always always wear a helmet!!!! A bike helmet not a skateboard helmet. Bike helmets are all the same as far as safety but the really expensive ones have more air holes. On a Hybrid you won't go that fast so a good 40 dollar helmet will do and don't use an old helmet. The Styrofoam oxidizes and looses it's ability to function as well. Helmets should be replaced every two years or after any crash where they hit the ground.
You should be able to get a good hybrid for about 299.00 on up. A little more then a beach cruiser. Go see a good bike shop because there is a huge difference in a department store bike. The parts are not replaceable.Basically their junk.

Have you purchased a bicycle in the last year?

votered201

I'm especially interested if you bought it for losing a lot of weight. I'm looking for weight limits to different bike models and some websites will tell you but others like Schwinn won't commit a specific limit to what their bike can take.

What kind did you buy?
What advice would you give someone about to buy a bike?

Thanks.

Answer
A friend of mine bought a Giant OCR3 after his doctor told him to lose weight or die. At the time he weighed almost four hundred pounds. Within three months he had lost more then a hundred pounds by riding twenty-five to fifty miles a day. He also bought a new bike because he had worn the gears down on the first one. I don't recommend taking his approach to losing weight, but it does show it is possible.

Avoid department store bicycles, they are made from the cheapest materials and put together by high school students. Nothing against students but when they build a bike they will leave you walking. Go to a bike store and buy the best bike you can afford within your budget. Lots of stores sell used bikes that they've taken in on trade. Make sure the store mechanic has checked it over before you buy it. Some good brands are Giant, Trek, Specialized, and Raleigh, but there are other good brands out there too. Raleigh's are my favorite, there a little bit heavier then other bikes but they ride very smoothly. They've been building them for about a hundred and twenty years now so they know what their doing. Buy a bike pump or a CO2 charger, a tube patch kit, tire levers, a helmet, and gloves. Gloves absorb road shock and make riding easier. Bike shorts are nice too, but if you buy a comfort bike with a soft saddle probably not necessary.

Bicycles are vehicles and are recognized as such by all fifty states. Ride like it like a vehicle, some states and cities have laws and ordinances that prohibit bicycle riding on sidewalks. Make sure the car drivers know what you are going to do, point which way you are going to turn. Don't surprise them and hopefully they won't surprise you. Good luck and enjoy it.

CA Bicycle helmets. Is it a requirement to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle in California (Palm Springs)?

Neither Re

Answer
The short answer is yes if you are under the age of 18.

The current law in California regarding bicycle helmets applies only to those under the age of 18. Even so, I have taken a couple of spills off of a bicycle in my adult years and I am glad I was wearing a helmet.

Here is the section from the Vehicle Code:

21212. (a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a
bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear
in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a nonmotorized
scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as
defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any
other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a
properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards
of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or
the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or
standards subsequently established by those entities. This
requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while
in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer
towed by the bicycle.
(b) Any helmet sold or offered for sale for use by operators and
passengers of bicycles, nonmotorized scooters, skateboards, or
in-line or roller skates shall be conspicuously labeled in accordance
with the standard described in subdivision (a) which shall
constitute the manufacturer's certification that the helmet conforms
to the applicable safety standards.
(c) No person shall sell, or offer for sale, for use by an
operator or passenger of a bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard,
or in-line or roller skates any safety helmet which is not of a type
meeting requirements established by this section.
(d) Any charge under this subdivision shall be dismissed when the
person charged alleges in court, under oath, that the charge against
the person is the first charge against that person under this
subdivision, unless it is otherwise established in court that the
charge is not the first charge against the person.
(e) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of this
section is an infraction punishable by a fine of not more than
twenty-five dollars ($25).
The parent or legal guardian having control or custody of an
unemancipated minor whose conduct violates this section shall be
jointly and severally liable with the minor for the amount of the
fine imposed pursuant to this subdivision.
(f) Notwithstanding Section 1463 of the Penal Code or any other
provision of law, the fines collected for a violation of this section
shall be allocated as follows:
(1) Seventy-two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall
be deposited in a special account of the county health department,
to be used for bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, and in-line
and roller skate safety education and for assisting low-income
families in obtaining approved bicycle helmets for children under the
age of 18 years, either on a loan or purchase basis. The county may
contract for the implementation of this program, which, to the
extent practicable, shall be operated in conjunction with the child
passenger restraint program pursuant to Section 27360.
(2) Two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall be
deposited in the county treasury to be used by the county to
administer the program described in paragraph (1).
(3) If the violation occurred within a city, 25 percent of the
amount collected shall be transferred to and deposited in the
treasury of that city. If the violation occurred in an
unincorporated area, this 25 percent shall be deposited and used
pursuant to paragraph (1).

Bicycle Helmets and what you think?

Matt E

So, Just wondering what you all think of them? The helmet safety standards are very wierdly tested and helmets dont really protect you from a side hit like a hit from center of the top. Anyhow, if its a law in some states for children up to 16 and in other states, that even adults have to wear them, why are they not standard with the bicycle that you buy? I mean, cars automatically come with safety belts because they have been proven to help with safety during accidents, and because its the law to wear them so why arent bikes not fitted with a free helmet voucher? Besides the whole companies trying to make extra money do you know why this is not a law yet?

Answer
Helmets are NOT like seatbelts in cars, they are separate and vary widely in design and price. Furthermore, there is no national law saying every bike rider must wear a helmet. The manufacturuer of the bike isn't the manufacturer of the helmet, so how do costs get assigned? How much does the voucher cover? Does the helmet manufacturuer get paid if the bike buyer doesn't want a helmet? etc, etc.

It makes more sense the way it is. If the law says helmet everyone picks what they want/can afford (all have to meet safety standards despite cost differences). If they don't have to have one/choose not to there is no extra cost. To do otherwise puts costs up for everyone.

Commuting by bicycle in the cold rain?

jellymouse

My first attempt must not have been specific enough, so I'm re-asking with a few more prompts. Specific garments and brand names are helpful whenever possible. Please try to answer all questions if you can.

1. How do I keep my head warm and dry while still wearing a helmet? Is it unsafe to put something on underneath my helmet? If so, can I put something on over it? My helmet is vented and has a visor.

2. Please suggest a waterproof garment for keeping my face and neck dry-ish and warm.

3. Is there such a thing as waterproof shoes? If so, list brands if possible. If not, suggest how I may keep my feet dry and warm. Brands are helpful.

4. I am assuming I will also wear a waterproof jacket, waterproof pants (perhaps Gortex, but can you suggest a cheaper-but-still-reliable brand?), and gloves. Specific brand suggestions are helpful.

5. Suggestions on where I can buy these things for cheaper (I already know I can look on E-bay).

Thanks in advance, and again, specific brands and garment items are very helpful!

Answer
Steven gave a nice answer, too bad it is for motorcycling.

I moved from the Southwest back to the Pacific Northwest a few years ago so here is what if have found in my efforts to become waterproof:

1. How do I keep my head warm and dry while still wearing a helmet? Is it unsafe to put something on underneath my helmet? If so, can I put something on over it? My helmet is vented and has a visor.

You can get a synthetic or wool biking cap for under the helmet, which will get damp but still keep you warm. The other option that I have not tried but see often is a helmet cover, which will keep your head dryer.

2. Please suggest a waterproof garment for keeping my face and neck dry-ish and warm.

Dry is probably not a complete option here. I have found if you use a helmet with a visor that helps a bit. A synthetic/wool baklava or neck gator, will keep you warm if not completely dry. I use the same one I got for snow skiing.

3. Is there such a thing as waterproof shoes? If so, list brands if possible. If not, suggest how I may keep my feet dry and warm. Brands are helpful.

I have heard positive things about Lake Winter Boots. http://commutebybike.com/2008/09/28/lake-winter-boots
They are not cheap. None of the rain proof shoes are.
I use my regular biking shoes with shoe covers. Which you can get for $30-50. I have Sugoi (Link Below) Keeping your feet dry is a challenge. The hardest part is keeping water from wicking its way down your socks from the top of the boot. The best defense is too accept, especially on a long rainy ride, that they will probably get damp. Wear a good pair of wool socks as they will stay warm when wet.

4. I am assuming I will also wear a waterproof jacket, waterproof pants (perhaps Gortex, but can you suggest a cheaper-but-still-reliable brand?), and gloves. Specific brand suggestions are helpful.

Pants first. Riders go two routes. First, you can wear heavier lyrca. This acts like a wetsuit on a diver. You may feel a bit damp. I usually don't notice it. But you will stay warm. The main drawback I find with lyrca pants is that it is more difficult to keep my feet dry as the water is more likely to seep/wick into the top of my boot cover. Second get waterproof pants. I have a cheap pair from REI and they have been durable and effective for a few years now. They shed water well and when I place them over my shoe covers my feet stay dry for a very long time. The drawback is they have little or no ventilation so they can get hot and sticky. If you don't get overly warm when riding then these are the driest option.

Jacket: I have a Showers Pass Double Century Jacket and I love it. The best thing about it as a jacket is you can adjust the ventilation with armpit zippers and cuff straps. If you are looking for something cheaper, I think you can get a Novarro rain jacket from REI for less. If you are looking to save some $$, Don't go for Gucci breathing materials. Go for good venting options on the jacket. Good venting makes a much more significant difference than breathing material. Especially when it is raining.

5. Suggestions on where I can buy these things for cheaper (I already know I can look on E-bay).
If you are into bike commuting for the long haul buy your clothing out of season. I jet my jackets/winter gear during spring clearance and right now/last fall I'm watching for any summer riding gear that is being dumped.

BikeNashbar and Performance bikes can often yield a good deals.
I also save my searches on ebay and just be patient.
Last year I picked up a couple of Nike and Canari marino wool long sleeve jerseys on ebay. They are awesome for winter riding. I wash them maybe twice a season as they never smell like synthetics and are really warm when its wet.
Finally, if you hang around or work on a computer, try a site called Chainlove.com They sell one item at a time, usually at a very steep discount. You can have them e-mail or alert you when a new item comes up for sale. Often I see women's jackets and clothing listed. If you are an impulse buyer, maybe not a good thing but I have managed to control myself and have picked up things I really need with very good savings.

Is riding with a helmet more dangerous than not wearing one?

gushie_got

I have this friend who believes that wearing a bicycle helmet is actually MORE dangerous than not wearing one. She believes that in a crash the helmet can cause the back of your neck to snap and even break. Is this true? Is actually wearing a bicycle helmet more dangerous than not wearing one

Answer
I have more than one friend whose life was saved due to wearing a helmet. Not wearing a helmet is just stupid. You've got to protect your brain... first and foremost.

Maybe her helmet doesn't fit her properly.

BTW - I don't know of anyone breaking their neck from a helmet, but plenty of people who were glad they were wearing one when they crashed.

A possible safe room in an aircraft?

mach2.25st

Has a safe room ever been designed for a passenger aircraft for VIPs? The VIP could be strapped securely with safety gear like a helmet and other protection equipment. The room would be very heavy but I would think it would be nothing too much for a large airliner. For example any idea if the President has something like this? During a crash he could be held securely with full gear on in a room able to withstand great forces and temperatures. Like a black box. Obviously it would be unlikely for people to survive if the aircraft was destroyed at high altitudes or crashing into something, but it would not be unbelievable for someone to survive runway crashes and other possible were the most common death is head injuries.

Answer
Have you ever heard the term spun into butter?

The human brain can not survive intact and functioning if subject to too much of or too many "spin" acceleration / deceleration cycles. So the body might well survive "intact", but be rather limp before rigor mortis sets in.

Aircraft crashes are particularly nasty in as much as the fuselage tends to break up and roll, often burning as they do so. Your idea would soften SOME aspects of this, but tend to heighten OTHER ASPECTS.

The reason a motorcycle helmet works poorly when loose is that it transmits more spin to the head as much as any other thing. THE TIGHTER HELMET SKIDS its hard surface against other objects, while the looser helmet spins on the head stops abruptly at it's limit of movement relative to the head and actually transmits momentary forces greater than might well have existed WITHOUT THE HELMET.

Your idea is in essence something like that.

A foam lined box would act as an air bag. BUT if the plane rolled ALL the contents of that box would be stuck inside the foam and FORCED to accelerate with the planes body AS IT ROLLS, BONCES and tears apart. It's rather likely this MIGHT entail transmission of forces greater and more harm-full than no box at all.

Perhaps if the object or person in the box were in a hard shell, that could crush the foam which itself were in a hard case AND had a hard case on it's inside so-as to resist objects being embedded in it?

Thus, I think you have something.

I would be willing to collaborate on a design of a 20 passenger airplane that would pod all passengers in carbon carbon mini newt-suits within shells within foam within shells so-as to offer improved survivability.

And no. With modern materials there is no reason great improvements wouldn't be possible in terms of safety, without allot of extra weight. Each pod should not increase weight by more than 100 lbs, and as it's possible to design the pods to act as structure, then there is even a potential of decreased weight.

Now getting people to sit in pods for a 2 hour flight... in newt-suits? Well, we'll be likely bankrupt in a day.

What are the restrictions of a motorcycle permit?

Ron

I live in hawaii

Answer
Check your local DMV/DOT in Hawaii. Locally the permit restrictions are: no unsupervised night riding, helmet mandatory, zero tolerance for alcohol, no passengers allowed- but daylight means if adult over 21 with a basic car license also can ride alone on any highway that vehicle can legally operate on-- so a over 150cc cycle can go on interstate system. My little CM400 has a new student, he passed the written test and will be legally puttin' this evening. Age is a factor on some permits- Iowa lets 14 year olds that have a moped permit ride on city street and county roads. Little mopeds can't do more than 30 mph and are usually so light that can't cause much extra damage. Iowa also has a tractor safety test- the 14 year old that pass's it can drive a 8800 series John Deere with tires higher than a squad car and priced more than 3 Cadillacs, weight of up to 50,000 pound or so- niece used to drive one with wagons to town that age. Mopeds as a side issue to tractors permits for letting younguns' on road- implements of husbandry driven by youth have a relatively safe record, so do mopeds. A car driver that tries to pick on mopeds - the word gets around the young crowd and the car seen parked gets a OOPS crunch by a very large tractor or combine driven by victim moped riders classmate or relative.

Electric Bike Law in California?

anthonyshi

Is there a law that applies to the electric bike to California? I know you have to where a helmet but can someone like a kid ride it?

Answer
Electric bikes have to follow the same laws as regular bikes.

Kids can ride it as long as they are physically large enough to handle it. Letting a smaller kid (that couldn't control it) ride it wouldn't be against the law, it would just be stupid (since you'd know they'd probably get hurt).

Does anyone else think bike helmets are stupid?

Anne M

When I was growing up we didn't have "bike helmets," and we didn't need them. Doesn't it seem like if a kid is riding in such a way as to genuinely risk head injury, that the thing to do is change his riding habits? Kids wearing bike helmets just depresses me. What do you think?
I didn't mean to suggest that I have anything against people who wear them, or that I would belittle anyone..never! I just think the need for these helmets reflects the fact that we're moving so fast, and taking so many risks now, that we can barely remember a time when being a kid was actually kind of a slow and easy thing, and kids were mostly safe and carefree.

Answer
I think I know what you mean. when i was a kid i rode all over town.( med sized town) When i was 8 yrs old i rode to the store alone and wherever i wanted really . ( and my parents were very protective) It was the 60's, there was less traffic. less mischief and well, less bad stuff in the world. At that time no one had even heard of a bike helmet. but needless to say if i had had a wreck or collided with a car It probably would have killed me, Now if a kid falls over or gets bumped by a car the helmet will probably save the kid's life
So yeah, it depresses me too but then, it's not the bike helmets...... it's the scary place the world has become... not like when i was a kid and a kid could be a kid.

Should I leave my motorcycle helmet chained up to my bike?

Martyn

Hi. I have recently bought a Honda cg 125 and wondered if when parked in a multistory car park, whether it is safe to chain my motorcycle helmet to my bike? Many thanks

Answer
Some motorcyclists have bumped cars and knocked car mirrors off. Hence, some car drivers do not like all motorcyclists. When they find a motorcycle without a rider around, no one watching, the helmet is stolen and tossed into the trash -- pay back for getting their mirrors broken. Slicing your helmet only takes a second more, and your will helmet be cut and still tossed into the trash.

If you want to keep the helmet, keep the helmet with you.

If you cannot keep the helmet with you, lock it inside a lockable hard top box.

can bikes have review mirrors?

blue sciss

I know it's a silly question but I'm new to biking (not motorcycles I mean regular 10 speed biking) and I get nervous riding in traffic (although law in my state says I have to and cannot be on the sidewalk). What makes me most nervous is going around parked cars or piles of leaves in the bike lane since I can't see what the cars are doing behind me. I'm not confortable turning around because I'm so new to biking I'm afraid to take my eyes off what's in front ot me. Can a bike have a review mirror? Where can I buy one?

Answer
It is absolutely not a silly question!

Bikes come with handle-mounted review mirrors, but these are dependent on whether your handles/wheel are straight or not. (If you're going around a sharp bend, the mirror becomes somewhat useless.)

They have neat little mirrors that attach to your helmet, which you should be wearing at all times anyway (and these days *not* wearing a helmet makes you look foolish, as opposed to the opposite, back in the 80s lol).

They come in many shapes and sizes. Here is an example:
http://www.amazon.com/Blackburn-01002-Bike-Helmet-Mirror/dp/B000BNTY58

But I would look for a more rectangular one that is slightly convex so you get a wider view of what's behind you.

Is my bicycle helmet too small?

tidy mess

I bought a Bell Faction bicycle helmet for my urban riding. I measured my head at its right at the border between what should be medium and what should be large size helmet. I tried on the large and it was definitely too big - it kept sliding off my head when I pushed on it. So I bought the medium. I haven't worn it riding yet but I've worn it around the house a little bit and I think it's a little bit too snug because it gives me a bit of a headache and I can feel my heart beating on the sides of my head which I assume means that the helmet it putting a little bit of pressure on the blood flow between my skull and my skin.

What should I do? Try it out riding and tolerate the mild headaches in hopes that the helmet will loosen up a bit over time? I should I return it and just accept the sad fact that neither the medium nor the large helmet fits my head?

Thanks!

Answer
Yeah, if the Bell doesn't fit right, try another brand. I bought a Bell helmet too, but found that it didn't fit me well and ended up spending a little more money and getting a Trek. Your helmet may or may not have a ratchet wheel on the back--if it does, play with that and that will probably fix it. If it doesn't, take the pads out of the helmet. They should just velcro in. Your helmet definitely shouldn't slide around on your head though, so good call in not getting the bigger size.

Does anyone know where I can get a King Head Bicycle Helmet size 67 cm. & larger ?

Can you ride a bicycle in uniform?

Bu Tran

Answer
Yes, you just need to follow base regs for safety on bikes. You would see guys biking off of Lejeune to base housing that is unfortunately not connected to base. While everyone is sitting in dead stop traffic on the 24/Lejeune blvd, you got Marines hauling home with their helmets on the sidewalk. Pretty humorous.

Bicycle safety for a toddler?

Kaylea's M

Which bike seat is good for a 18 month old. The seat that goes on the back of the bike or the trailer that trails behind it? Which is safer? My opinion is she would be safer in the trailer with a helmet on that way if you fall, maybe she wont get so scaped up..

Answer
We don't bike much, but several children in my daughter's daycare get biked to daycare (she goes to a university daycare center). Those parents almost all use the Burley trailer that you attach behind your bike. The toddlers ALWAYS use helmets and are strapped in with seat belts, so it's still safe. I first noticed it in the 15-24 month classroom, so I'm not sure I'd do it any earlier as you want to make sure your child is physically mature enough for it.

My son recently started a project and he wanted to fiberglass it and then Bondo it. Any tips and tricks?

Q. He is building something similar to the Iron Man helmet.

Answer
A multi-step process. For an extremely close fit, he could make a plaster mask of his own head, which he could then pad out a bit to provide some clearance, and then lay up fiberglass over that and start adding Bondo for sculpting features. When he's done scultpting he can add bicycle helmet padding inside the mask to take up the clearance he built in, help keep it very still on his head.

NOTE: add some extra clearance below the chin so he can move his mouth to talk with the helmet on.

Lots of YouTube vids on how to make a plaster cast of your head, check 'em out. They'll show the process better than I can write it.

Cheap Rollerblades??

ryan j

Does anybody know where i can find a pair of rollerblades that are under $50? Street skates, and i think they might be just recreational, im not goin to ne skate parks :D

Answer
I hate to break it to you but any skates you get for under $50 are probably junk that you will want to be rid of after a dozen or so times out on them.

If you shop carefully, you might be able to find a better pair at one of the big box sports stores (Sports Authority, Dick's, etc) that has been marked down for clearance.

Other than being really likely, you are probably looking at around $100 for Rollerblade or K2 skates.
You really should also get a helmet and pads. A bicycle helmet is good for rec skating.

Is it a law against riding a 2 year old on a bicycle with you, without a helmet or some type of restraint?

mam m

Well I found out that's what my son's dumb father been doing this. When I told him about how dangerous that is riding a toddler on a bike on his lap like that across busy intersections with no protection. He yelled at me and said he is not puting his son in danger, and that I was crazy. My son's father already has heart and breathing problems. We did get into an arguement about this. Then I've found out he was still doing this when I dropped my son off. So now I let him see his son when I'm around, but never to spend a night again, just because he won't listen to me, and because of the safety of my son. I don't think I'm over reacting at all. What do you think?

Answer
I work in the field of child protective services, so my answer is colored by my career. I believe that he is indeed placing the child in an unsafe situation and if he continues to do so, he is being neglectful. If you get into a custody / visitation battle and you need help justifying supervised visits this would be a situation you should bring up. I am going to suggest that you have a local law enforcement officer speak to him about how dangerous it is for the child to ride on his lap, your bicycle laws (I am sure this is illegal) and the results an accident could have on your son. Head trauma is a very unkind and unforgiving injury. The best to you and thanks for being a caring and concerned mom...we need more like you.

Which Bicycle trailer is good for a beach cruiser?

fuck

i have no idea on what are the differences on trailers.
Which one is the safest and easy to install?
and are they expensive?

thanks, this is for one child 2 year old... is the age appropriate for my baby to ride on a bicycle trailer?

whats the worst that can happen? do my child need to wear a helmet ? and me too? im in california.

Answer
Here is a link to a site that sells them
http://www.bicycletrailers.com/home.jsp

The child is old enough to ride on a trailer and a helmet is required, you live in ca and all minors must wear a helmet whether they are sitting in a trailer or pedaling themselves. You also need a helmet, although it is not the law I highly recommend it. My helmet saved my life when I was in an accident and I would never ride without one.

Do you prefer to CYCLE or WALK?

Fs4b

Answer
Cycling is the use of bicycles, or - less commonly - unicycles, tricycles, quadricycles and other similar wheeled human powered vehicles (HPVs) as a means of transport, a form of recreation or a sport. It is done on roads and paths, across open country, through tunnels, over bridges, on snow, or even over ice (icebiking). As a sport, cycling is governed internationally by the Union Cycliste Internationale in Switzerland (for upright bicycles) and by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (for other HPVs, or human-powered vehicles). Cycling for transport and touring is promoted on a European level by the European Cyclists' Federation, with associated members from Great Britain, Japan and elsewhere. Regular conferences on cycling for transport are held under the auspices of Velo City; global conferences are coordinated by Velo MondialIn many countries, the most commonly used vehicle for road transport is a utility bicycle. These have frames with so-called relaxed geometry, protecting the rider from shocks from the road, and easing low speeds steering. Road bikes tend to have a more upright shape and a shorter wheelbase, which make the bike more mobile but harder to ride slowly. The design, coupled with low or dropped handlebars, requires the rider to bend forward more, which reduces air resistance at high speed.

The price of a new bicycle can range from US$50 to more than US$20,000[3], depending on quality, type and weight (the most exotic road bicycles can weigh as little as 3.2kg (7 lb)) [4]). Being measured for a bike and taking it for a test ride are recommended before buying.

The drivetrain components of the bike should also be considered. A middle grade dérailleur is sufficient for a beginner, although many utility bikes come equipped with hub gears. If the rider plans a significant amount of hillclimbing, a triple-crank (three chainrings) front gear system may be preferred. Otherwise, the relatively lighter and less expensive two chainrings may be better.

Many road bikes include clipless pedals to which special shoes attach via a cleat, permitting the rider to pull on the pedals as well as push. Other possible accessories for the bicycle include locks, mudguards (UK)/fenders (US), luggage carriers and pannier bags, water bottles and bottle cages.
Cycling with just a backpack in london
Cycling with just a backpack in london

For basic maintenance and repairs, cyclists can choose to carry a pump, a spare inner tube, a CO2 cartridge, a puncture repair kit and tyre levers. Cycling can be more efficient and comfortable with special shoes, gloves, and shorts. In wet weather, riding can be more tolerable with waterproof clothes, such as cape, jacket, trousers and overshoes.

Items legally required in some jurisdictions, or voluntarily adopted for safety reasons, include bicycle helmets, generator or battery operated lighting, and audible signaling devices such as a bell or horn. Extras include studded tires and a bicycle computer.

What penalty would this provoke?

Q. If you didn't wear a bike helmet as the law was recently passed, what penalty happens? It states if you're under 18 and riding a bicycle, you need to wear a helmet. Idk if my parents are playing a joke because my kids haven't heard about it, and neither have my siblings.

Answer
It's not really a serious crime. Especially for someone under 18. You might just get a stern talking-to by the cop. You might get a ticket (which, of course, your parents would pay). Or the cop might just stop you and ask you if you knew you had to have a helmet. Some cops are very gentle with kids, others really hate kids. 8^)

If you were out cycling with your family, Mom and Dad and two or three kids, and nobody was wearing a helmet, the adults might get a ticket. They should know the law.

When I was 18 I got my first motorscooter. It had a rear-view mirror but it vibrated so badly that I couldn't see anything in it, so I just took it off. I got stopped by a California Highway Patrolman. He pulled me over, then he talked to me for about 10 minutes. I hadn't known I was required to have a mirror (working or not) and he was very kind and friendly. He didn't give me a ticket. He saw that I was a beginner and he gave me some safety tips, and actually he taught me a few things I didn't know. It was the beginning of the Summer and he said he hoped I would have a great Summer on my bike and be careful and safe. Then he got back in his car and left.

i did a 25 foot gap on my kona stinky after hesitating to do it for about a month. it was the funnest jump ever. my friends josh and din were there. din was building a different jump while i hit the jump, so he didnt see and he didnt believe me that i did it. so i tried again....big mistake....i nosecased the landing and im not sure exactly what happened because i got nocked out but when i woke up, i had a broken hip and 2 fractured fingers(and the concussion). my 1500 dollar bike was done. the fork snapped off and it was all scratched up. the cushioning from the seat tore off. im scared as hell of huge gaps like that now, so i only do 10-15 footers. o by the way i had shingaurds, a pressure suit and a fullface helmet on. left my gloves at home though.

olympian as in the olympics 2010, michael phelps would work if i was a guy! :) lol

idk if that would work b/c it's winter olympics...ill try it though!~
i also have brown north face jacket....:)

Answer
OH! OH!
I love these questions :3

You could dress as a snowboarder, like Shaun White! Or a figure skater like Kim Yu Na! :D
There's a lot of athletes playing, so the website you can go to that's official is in the Source thingy under.

If you wanna be a Snowboarder...
1.) You can a big cardboard box, and cut it up to make it shape like those snow boards
2.) Cover the cardboard snow board with paper so you can make your own designs
3.) Wear big heavy boots
4.) If your mom or dad has those oldie biking helmets, you can wear that O:
5.) GOGGLES! Probably you can borrow those from your Science Lab teacher.
6.) Wear a winter coat!
7.) Pick the athlete you want to be and try to copy his/her hairstyle ~(O-O)~

If you wanna be a Figure Skater
1.) I know you might not like it, but you can wear like a one-piece bathing suit or something, and then wear stockings under them!
2.) If you have those boots that look like figure skating shoes...ooh...what are they called?! The one with the high tops?
3.) Put you hair in a ponytail (if you wanna, but most figureskaters do that, depends on the athlete you pick :D)

Hope it helps ~(^-^)~

What do I need to know as a motorcycling tourist to British Columbia (from WA state)?

Complacent

Specifically, is insurance necessary? Helmets? Can I use my headphones? How strict are speed laws enforced relative to the US (or just WA)? Max speed? Any different traffic laws to consider?

I intend to first do some riding in Vancouver, then stick to some of the national parks Northeast of Vancouver; so differences between the two would be nice to note.

Bonus: What are the penalties if said speed laws are broken for a tourist? :) Death penalty?

Thanks!

Oh, also please only laws or references which are motorcycle specific or apply to all motor vehicles. Other vehicle's laws may not apply to my bike. For example WA requires insurance on a car, but not a bike. If you are a biker I apologize for stating the obvious.

Answer
All licensed vehicles in BC require insurance, at a minimum third party liability insurance. You need a daytime running light or else keep your headlight on at all times. Helmets are mandatory, they have to be on the approved list (see below). Speed laws are enforced for bikes. There is no grey zone with speeding, but going 5 or 10 mph over the limit on the highway isn't likely to get you a ticket. Speeding fines start at 175 bucks and increase based on the speed and potential danger (such as reckless driving, speeding in a school zone or a construction zone, etc. If you see an emergency vehicle approaching with lights and siren (oncoming or from behind) you must slow to 40 km/hr and pull to the far right lane if safe to do so. The traffic laws are the same all over the province, so no difference from Vancouver to the hinterlands. No headphones or earbuds allowed. No cellphone use (unless handsfree with a Bluetooth or similar device). Maximum speed on the freeway is 110 km/hr (about 65 mph) otherwise as posted. Generally, city streets are 30 mph, rural roads 40 - 55 mph, school zones 20 mph. If your bike doesn't have a metric speedo, figure out the conversions before you cross the border, the speed signs are only in metric except when you're close to the border. If you are going to the bigger parks like Glacier, Yoho, Jasper, etc pay attention to the "Last service for xx KM, Check Your Fuel" signs - they're not kidding.Be aware of wildlife, especially in the parks - hitting an elk on your bike will ruin your day.

How can you distinguish Bicycle helmet with a Motorcycle helmet?

Lizabeth Y

What is the exact difference between the bicycle helmet and a motorcycle as my neighbors son wants to drive a motorcycle with his bicycle helmet.I need to know any information .and if anyone can help regarding .it will be helpful.since i just want to let her know that its not safe and she needs to stop him by giving her the full information.

Answer
we should intelligently consider the proper helmet for the right sport, and enforce our decisions on the youth who can suffer these injuries. If they don't take care of simple things. There are helmets made especially for various activities. Bicycle helmets that are great for riding a bike for pleasure are not adequate for motorcycle riding. There are specially made helmets for motorcycles that encompass more of the head. Complete helmets that cover the ears are also necessary for dirt bikes, pocket bikes, and scooters. Many have face masks with eye protection included.

What's a good bicycle trailer for a baby/toddler?

Schnatzel

Answer
Unfortunately, you can't put a baby in a bike trailer. Even with a helmet, it's not safe. All the trailer manuals say you can't use them with a child under 1 year old. (It's for the same reason a child that young can't ride in a forward-facing car seat.)

The two commonly available top-of-the-line models are Chariot or Burley. The Chariots are nice because the front wheels--the ones you'd use if you were using the trailer as a stroller--go UNDER the rider's compartment instead of out front like the Burley.

That said, I have a double Burley. It was on super-sale at REI, and we're members, so we got it for half-price.

My 4 year old and 2 year old love it.

is cycling without a helmet illegal in NY?

XYZ

i bought a bike yesterday and i wonder if i should wear helmet or not. i am 19 yrs old alrdy.

Answer
1) Want to live to be 20 years old & beyond? Wear a helmet. #2) You didn't state what part of N.Y. In the city - the state - where? #3) All you need to do is Google "bicycle helmet laws" and New York to get the possible answer. #4) Ask LOCALLY! Where I live (St. Louis) some municipalities (smaller cities surrounding St. Louis) state that only kids 12 & under must wear a helmet. Some state anyone 16 and under. One city (Florissant, MO.) states EVERYONE must wear a helmet - regardless of age.

the severity of approximately 88 percent of bicycling injuries can be reduced dramatically by?

haley

riding only on the streets.
using helmets.
using a light while riding at night .
riding a bicycle with smaller tires

Answer
NONE of the above. The severity of accidents (wrecks) can be avoided simply by PAYING ATTENTION. A full FORTY-FIVE percent of all cycling accidents are SOLO falls. No one else or nothing else involved.
http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg

Riding only on the streets will NOT prevent an accident - although that's where VEHICLES (such as the bicycle) belong.

Using helmets can & certainly will reduce the amount of serious head traumas. But it won't "prevent" anything.

Using a light while riding at night will certainly improve your chances of NOT having an accident, but won't do squat to prevent you from having a wreck on your own.

Riding a bicycle with smaller tires has NOTHING to do with it. In fact - too small of a tire and/or frame size could INCREASE your chances of taking a spill.

In Georgia, is it illegal to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

I want to get a new bicycle to ride recreationally. I will only be riding on neighborhood roads and at parks. I will not use it as a mean of transportation or on public roads.

Answer
A full FORTY-FIVE percent of all cycling accidents are "solo falls". No one else or nothing else involved.

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Georgia helmet law.
"No person under the age of 16 years shall operate or be a passenger on a bicycle on a highway, bicycle path, or sidewalk under the jurisdiction or control of this state or any local political subdivision thereof without wearing a bicycle helmet."
