the severity of approximately 88 percent of bicycling injuries can be reduced dramatically by?

haley

riding only on the streets.
using helmets.
using a light while riding at night .
riding a bicycle with smaller tires

Answer
NONE of the above. The severity of accidents (wrecks) can be avoided simply by PAYING ATTENTION. A full FORTY-FIVE percent of all cycling accidents are SOLO falls. No one else or nothing else involved.
http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg

Riding only on the streets will NOT prevent an accident - although that's where VEHICLES (such as the bicycle) belong.

Using helmets can & certainly will reduce the amount of serious head traumas. But it won't "prevent" anything.

Using a light while riding at night will certainly improve your chances of NOT having an accident, but won't do squat to prevent you from having a wreck on your own.

Riding a bicycle with smaller tires has NOTHING to do with it. In fact - too small of a tire and/or frame size could INCREASE your chances of taking a spill.

In Georgia, is it illegal to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

I want to get a new bicycle to ride recreationally. I will only be riding on neighborhood roads and at parks. I will not use it as a mean of transportation or on public roads.

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Is it okay to ride a bike when....?

Jamain v

You are not wearing a helmet? I will only use the bike around my subdivision (a big one) and I dont have a helmet. There is also no bike zone in my sub so is it also okay to ride my bike on the sidewalk?

Answer
And I suppose all the streets & sidewalks in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows in case you do fall. Right? I got news for ya...a full 45% of all bicycle accidents are "Solo Falls"! No one else or nothing else involved. See link...

Get a good, well ventilated helmet & a helmet mirror. And ride on the STREETS! Sidewalks are for pedestrians. Streets are for vehicles. Bicycles are vehicles - by law!

What are the laws in California of using a Scooter of 108cc engine?

SolidSnake

I want to buy a 2010 Honda Elite 110 which has a 108cc engine.
I am wondering what are the laws of owning and riding that scooter.

Also additional: Do you need to buy insurance, and pay another fees?

Answer
See link below.

"A motor-driven cycle is a motorcycle whose motor displaces less than 150 cubic centimeters."

"Motorcycles, Motor-Driven Cycles, Motorized Bicycles/Mopeds (Section 406(a) VC ) - A helmet meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218, self-certified by the manufacturer and displaying a 'DOT' emblem must be worn by all riders of motocycles, motor-driven cycles, and motorized bicycles/mopeds."

"Motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, motorized bicycle/moped (Section 406(a) VC)

Must obtain an M-1 or M-2 endorsement on a driver's license.
M-1 allows the driver to operate a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle and moped
M-2 allows for operation of a moped or motorized bicycle only.
To obtain an M-1 or M-2 endorsement, the driver must:
Pass the appropriate written exam
Pass riding skills test (DMV will accept certificate of competence from an approved novice motorcyclist training program instead of skills test, such as the California Motorcyclist Safety Program).
If the individual is under 21 years of age, mandatory successful completion of a Basic Rider education course approved by the CHP is required, such as the Basic Rider course available through the California Motorcyclist Safety Program."
I am certain you will need insurance.
Good Luck

The silence from Maryland's political leadership was deafening when the news broke that Carlos Montano, an illegal alien, was arrested in Virginia for crashing into and killing an innocent Catholic nun while driving under the influence ("Suspect in fatal accident an illegal," Page 1, Aug. 3).

Politicians in Montgomery and Prince George's counties, which are known sanctuaries for illegal aliens, are quite aware of the dangerous arrest-and-release policies used for drunken-driving and related cases involving illegal aliens. For counties that pride themselves on public health and safety issues such as cigarette-smoking bans, trans-fat elimination, fireworks restrictions, motorcycle and bicycle helmet requirements and severe drunken-driving regulations, this revolving-door policy for illegals stands out like a sore thumb.

A careful review of Montgomery County's outstanding criminal and traffic warrants posted online reveals hundreds of alcohol-related arrests of illegals. In Prince George's County, the problem is even more pronounced, with outstanding warrants numbering in the tens of thousands. Why does the solid bloc of Democratic politicians in both counties assume that illegal aliens cited for drunken driving and related automotive violations (such as driving without a license or insurance) would actually show up in court for their crimes?

These fugitives already broke the law getting to our state and have no respect for our system of justice. We all know too well that automobiles can be killing machines. For the safety of Maryland residents, it's time to tighten immigration-enforcement restrictions to include all driving violations.

Why is it so hard to make wearing a bicycle helmet a law?

Doug

Seat belts are mandatory in all cars and its also illegal not to use it. Some states even require helmets on motor bikes. Why cant they make it a law to where a helmet when cycling. I've heard arguments like they cant tell you how to protect yourself because your life is your choice. Well its illegal to not wear a seat belt, its illegal to kill yourself, and its illegal to do many other dangerous things. According to those laws the government can decide the risks you take in life.
I am an avid cyclist and I always were a helmet. Its not uncomfortable and its not any real issue to have one. I have gotten in an accident before in which my head hit the ground. even with the helmet on I was still knocked out. This was also a very slow speed accident so any random kid could have the same thing happen and get killed because they didnt have a helmet.

Answer
Current US motorcycle and bicycle helmet laws.......

April 2010

Low-power cycle (LPC) is a generic term used by IIHS to cover motor-driven cycles, mopeds, scooters, and various other 2-wheeled cycles excluded from the motorcycle definition. While state laws vary, a cycle with an engine displacement of 50 cubic centimeters or less, brake horsepower of 2 or less, and top speeds of 30 mph or less typically is considered an LPC. Twenty-two states have motorcycle helmet laws that cover all low-power cycles. Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia have laws that cover some low-power cycles.

Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia have bicycle helmet laws that require some young bicyclists to wear a helmet. Local law may require helmet use for some or all bicyclists.

So soon all states will have this law......
