Anyone know exactly what the bicycle/helmet law is in California?

Peter S

i recently donated my car to "cars 4 causes" and find it very hard carpooling w/my girl when she needs to drop our baby off before work. im most likely gonna get a bike but aren't really sure about the helmet law... i know wearing one would be the sensible thing to do but if i don't will i be given a ticket?? what if i ride on the sidewalk? to be more specific im in Santa Barbara, CA. thank u...

Answer
In California you can be cited for not wearing a helmet (i'm assuming you're talking about a bicycle, not a motor bike). A helmet may look dorky, but it's worth it. Plus just from biking, you'll be in the best shape of your life! (unless you were a triathlete or something before...)

Is it illegal to ride a bicycle with out a helmet in California?

FudgemsBox

I have been riding my bike without a helmet, and my Dad told me it is against the law in california. He said if you get caught you will get a mark on your driving record. it this true?

I am 15 right now, and i have ridden by tons of cops without a helmet and they didn't seem to mind, .

so is it against the law?

i know its for safety , and when i go on slippery and hilly terrain i always where a helmet, but when i go out for just a ride around the block or to the store i do not where my helmet?

so is it alright for me not to where my helmet?

Answer
There are no Federal laws regarding the use of a helmet. There are state laws at vary from state to state. In California to are required to wear a helmet until you are 18. There are some municipalities that can require every one to wear a helmet. Most accidents happen very close to home.

What sport bike is a better choice the R6 or CBR600 for a 1st time rider?

NoHoldemba

Answer
Alot of good answers here on your question. Neither is a good starter bike. Especially if you tend to get crazy with the speed.
Talk to other riders in your area, and not just the guys who you hang out with.
Sport bikes suck for any long distance runs. Consider what you are going to use the bike for- short hops or any hour+ long runs.

Main thing is how you feel when you sit on the bike- does it feel like 'Home' to you? Which one is easier to work the controls on, what 'fits' your body? Looks don't mean crap if you are not comfortable-and it could end up a safety issue for you.

I've been told the Honda is a bit more forgiving. And I know the Honda has been more reliable for me. I have a 21 yr old cruiser that still kicks butt when I ask it to!

A first time rider needs to take the MSF class. It may be boring to you, it isn't glamorous, but it will teach some basic survival skills. It also is a discount on your insurance premiums.
Some states allow exemptions on helmet requirements if you have taken an approved course.

Whatever you get- don't try to keep up w buddies that want to rack up some turn and burn miles! Keep away from the drunk/buzzed riding. You will be alive to look at pictures of you on the bike later on in life.
"Ride Your Own Ride" is an idea that will help you stay alive and riding. Plan on doing alot of parking lot practice to get familiar with how your bike feels and reacts with you on board. I know 20+ yr riding vetrans who still take the time to put in work on slow manuvers. Save the fancy stuff til you are more experienced, You might be around and functional to go get a bigger/faster bike that way.

First ever rider? Go with a used bike- less cost to start with, and less cost when you drop it.(And you will drop it a couple times, pretty much anyone who is a new rider has dropped it at least once!) The cost for a new turn signal on an 05 Boulevard starts at $75. I mean, would you hand over the keys to your brand new car to a beginner driver or the keys to the older car?

Accept that cars are not going to see you. Ride like you are invisible to everyone and still expect to be treated like a target. I've had folks smile, wave,, and pull out right in front of me and right into my lane. Folks don't process what their eyes see, Some hate bikes and will force you off the road because they don't consider a bike as a 'real vehicle' with a right to being on the road.
Shiny side up always,,, ride safe, and stay out of the ER's and ICU's

Starting out on dirt bikes.?

cory S

Ok, i want to get into dirt bikes i had to wait till i was 13 so here i am. I can now buy one, my dad said i have to get a 250cc and i want it to be a low price around 1,000 to 2,000. Got any ideas?
by the way i am 5'6

Answer
if your just learning to ride? a 250cc has a bunch of power they are wheelie machines.something smaller to start out with would be better,so you can really get the feel for the bike and learn what the horse power can do! 80 cc 100 cc would be more than enough for 13 yr old to learn and start out on! always wear a helmet and protect your head!

How does this bike helmet look?

Scootaloo

I'm a bicycle commuter and I am one of those people who look awful in a helmet. Anyway I picked up a new one that I thought looked alright in the store, but now I can't decide if I actually like it or not.

http://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftr/helmets/road-helmets/echelon-ii

I picked up the white version at my bike shop. Would you be embarrassed to even be seen wearing this helmet? Or do you think it looks alright as far as bike helmets go?

(I tried to find a picture of someone wearing it but I couldn't find one)

Answer
I like it. I mean I wasn't so keen on it in yellow but some of the other colours are nice. It looks trendy and modern. Looks fairly normal but never the less it is not a bad helmet.

Is it necessary to wear a bike helmet when commuting to work?

Tks O

In addition, I only ever ride my bicycle on the pavement/side walk shared by pedestrians; the only time I go on the road is when cross the lights for pedestrians.

Is it really necessary for commuters to wear a bike helmet. I just find it unnecessary to wear helmets on the street because the chances of collision and injury are a lot less than on the road, and I question the compulsory bike helmet laws.

If wearing helmets is mandatory, why don't we make the inclusion of airbags mandatory for all cars as well then?

Answer
Even when I ride on the sidewalk, which is illegal where I live, I have close calls when people are backing out of driveways and such. Not to mention the people that are getting out of their house I almost hit.

http://bicyclesafe.com/
"The Crosswalk Slam

You're riding on the sidewalk and cross the street at a crosswalk, and a car makes a right turn, right into you. Cars aren't expecting bikes in the crosswalk, so you have to be very careful to avoid this one. This collision is so common we've lost track of the number of people who've told us they were hit this way, such as Ray John Ray. One study showed that sidewalk-riding was twice as dangerous as road riding, and another study said it's even more dangerous than that.

How to avoid this collision:

1. Get a headlight. If you're riding at night, you should absolutely use a front headlight. It's required by law, anyway.

2. Slow down. Slow down enough that you're able to completely stop if necessary.

3. Don't ride on the sidewalk in the first place. Crossing between sidewalks can be a fairly dangerous maneuver. If you do it on the left-hand side of the street, you risk getting slammed as per the diagram. If you do it on the right-hand side of the street, you risk getting slammed by a car behind you that's turning right. You also risk getting hit by cars pulling out of parking lots or driveways. These kinds of accidents are hard to avoid, which is a compelling reason to not ride on the sidewalk in the first place.

And another reason not to ride on the sidewalk is that you're threatening to pedestrians. Your bike is as threatening to a pedestrian as a car is threatening to you. Finally, riding on the sidewalk is illegal in some places. (In Austin, those places are the Drag, and downtown on 6th St. and on Congress). If you do plan on riding on sidewalks, do it slowly and EXTRA carefully, ESPECIALLY when crossing the street between two sidewalks."

"1. Don't ride on the sidewalk. When you come off the sidewalk to cross the street you're invisible to motorists. You're just begging to be hit if you do this. Keith Vick was killed this way in Austin, TX in Dec. 2002."
~~~~~
"Contrary to popular belief, you increase your chances of getting hit by car when riding your bike on the sidewalk. I know you may find it hard to believe but its true.
While riding in the street is more intimidating, it places you in a position that makes you more visible to the motorist. Usually people will ride on the sidewalk because they want to stay away from cars or they ride against traffic in the street because they are afraid of being hit from behind: they "want to see the cars coming at me". Crashes on sidewalks comprise close to fifty percent of all crash types. They are more common because every driveway forms an intersection and, if you went to driving school you may remember, that most crashes happen at intersections. In traffic engineering jargon where two vehicles cross paths is referred to as a conflict point and traffic engineers work very hard at reducing or eliminating conflict points.
Essentially every driveway that crosses the sidewalk forms a conflict point. Couple this with motorists not stopping at the sidewalk before entering the street and looking at traffic in the street not for bicyclists on the sidewalk and you have recipe for a crash. By cycling in the street you completely avoid these conflict points. The motorist stops before entering the street and is looking where you will be before they cross your path. While these crashes are usually not fatal, they can easily result in an incapacitating injury especially if you are not wearing a helmet. In my expert witness practice, the majority of sidewalk related crashes I've been involved with the rider was not wearing a helmet and usually result in brain injury"- http://ezinearticles.com/?Bicycle-Safety---The-Problems-With-Sidewalk-Riding-and-Against-the-Flow-of-Traffic&id=1857311
Dumb Bicycle Helmet Question?
Old Hippie
Although being strictly on 2 wheels for a while now - I still consider myself a novice in many ways. So, if I don't get the terminology right - pardon me. I bought what I thought was a good helmet, a Giro Indicator (link below). The ventilation in both the top & rear are very good. That's why I like it - my head stays cool even in the summer. But, here's the problem... The backside of the helmet is just that hard foam material, I'll call it. There is no hard outer case. That's just on the top & somewhat on the sides. A gust of wind came along while I was taking a break and blew the helmet off the bike rack & onto the ground. It landed strictly on the back side & cracked that hard foam material. Being on a severe budget - I used some epoxy to lock it back in place. I can barely see the crack! It seems structurally sound again. But is it? There is no damage to the top or sides, not even a scratch. If I do need a new one, I'll have to wait until the first of next month when the next VA Disability check comes in. I'd get a better one, but simply can't afford one of those $100 helmets. $40 is about my limit. Thanks...
Answer
Old
Yep, the foam has been compromised and so is your head if you should go down. Even so wear the helmet until a replacement is available.... it is much better than nothing. Try Ebay for a Giro helmet. The total cost might be the same (including the shipping) but you may get a better helmet for less $'s. You will often find some previous year close-outs pretty cheap! As always, know your size.
Bike Purchase: Which one would you purchase for a new bike commuter?
mikaISOTOV
Hello everyone, so I've decided to ditch the automobile (for financial reasons mostly) and I want to purchase a bike. Its up to these two bikes which I will get but can't decide which one is worth my hard earn money. One is the Diamondback Edgewood LX Hybrid which is $300 and the Giant Escape City 2011 bike which is $540. I'm new to bikes so I don't know all that much about bikes so any help is very much appreciated. I'm only biking 6 miles roundtrip on city streets. My main question is whether there is a justification to pay that extra $240 for the Giant bike or are both bikes equally durable and good performance wise to go ahead and get the $300 Diamondback bike?
Answer
The Giant is a much more capable platform. The overall components are generally a step above the Diamondback. Also if you are going to use the bike as a commuter you need fender and a bike rack which would run you another $50 to buy and install so the actual difference is more like $190 dollars.
So go with the Giant, buy some lights, a tire patch kit and minipump, water bottle holder, and a helmet for a total of about $600 dollars. Seems like a lot but consider that is costs about $.50 a mile to own and operate a car so your bike will pay you back after about 100 trips to work (about 1/2 a year)
Is it just me or are bicycle helmets worthless....?
Nazgul
I'm not an avid bike rider so my point might be moot but in my opinion they seem very ineffective, sit far too high and don't offer any face protection, I can understand they are made for low (bike) speed impacts but it seem auto accidents are far more likely to injure or kill you thus making the bike helmet worthless in a real world scenario. Also, my biggest complaint is the false sense of security they offer in my opinion and make non wearers seem reckless and dangerous. How often does one land in a way the a high riding foam and plastic skull cap can protect you from...I would be far more concerned about my face structure, fill me in please. Thanks!
Answer
If your helmet is sitting "far too high", you're wearing it wrong. The front should cover the forehead & be the first thing to touch the ground.
https://www.google.com/#q=how+to+wear+bicycle+helmet
http://www.evolutionofdad.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/bike_helmet.jpg
Next...if you think most bicycle accidents or "wrecks" or crashes involve a motor vehicle - you are WRONG! A full 45% do NOT involve anyone or anything else. 45% are SOLO FALLS.
http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg
Are the streets & roads in your area lined with marshmallows in case of a fall? No...I didn't think so. Most bicycle crashes occur at slower speeds, not involving a car. Helmets can & do save lives.
As far as reckless & dangerous cyclists...don't ya think they would be that way with or without a helmet? Sometimes...you just can't fix stupid. Prime example or illustration demonstrated on this link... https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZo2DGC5RrlNrAdnwXhNsMew1K_bKF-6LKFXWsvioj6nwSov1OWoeFOL9VrTCqTSemy73-6zhvvaym2IdHsqZ8iRZ1zEy3DbgbE-5HWOaeda8kB2u8P6ZXgnKxxO6epbksZtAs_rG6FHVP/s400/You+Can't+Fix+Stupid.jpg
Bicycle helmet shell dimensions?
young agai
I am designing a bike helmet shell, can anyone tell me what the dimensions of just the shell are of a child to adolescent sized helmet? Thank you!!!
Answer
Smallest sized helmet generally available is 48 cm (18.9 ")
There were smaller helmets around but most manufacturers steer away from these. The skull bones of a child less than this size may not have sutured together.
An adolescent can have a fully grown head
Larger sizes of 63 cm (24.8") are common. Some people need an even larger helmet.
Rough guide width 0.8 times length. Depth 0.4 times length
Shay
I'm going to the Taylor Swift August 23rd show at the Los Angeles Staples Center and was planning on wearing literally a 100 glow sticks on my body! (arms, legs, waist, etc). The last Taylor concert (Speak Now about 2 years ago) I got away with bringing a few (maybe 10?) glowsticks in my purse but didn't know at the time whether or not they were permitted. The Staples Center website does NOT specifically say no glowsticks but I've seen on random forums online saying that they don't allow them. Has anyone worn glowsticks OR led lights OR el wire on your body into the concert at Staples Center?
This is from the Staples Center website:
mountain bike for commuting?
Derek
i've decided to use this old mongoose mountain bike that has been sitting in a shed for years to commute from home to work or near by stores. do they make for good commuter bikes? my home town (Tucson) is known for being a bike rider hotspot, but i hear about people on bikes being struck by vehicles often. i figured if i use the mountain bike i could ride on the dirt aside the roads instead of the tiny bike lanes on them. thoughts? opinions? thanks!
Answer
You may not like this answer... I use a mountain bike occasionally for "Urban Assault" riding. And it's a damn good one - the same kind the police use.
http://archive.fujibikes.com/archivebikes.php?prodid=2003&prodname=Police%20Patrol&modelyear=2012
It has lock out front forks & city tires. If that Mongoose has suspension forks & they can't be "locked out" - bad choice for a "commuter bike". But...at least install some Kenda Kross tires on it.
http://www.amazon.com/Kenda-TR0-Kross-24-Kross-Plus-Wire/dp/B003WO4CNW
The key to commuting in the city is being SEEN! Designated bike lanes are a joke. Separate but equal my @ss! Bike lanes put you to the far right - out of the "line of sight" of most tunnel vision motorists. Whenever there's a designated bike lane - I hug the LEFT part of it & go out into the traffic lane if need be. Most of these bike lanes also put you right smack dab in the "door zone" should some fool not look first before opening a car door.
What's a good bike for commuting?
Q. I need to learn how to ride a bike, I'm 21 and don't know how. I'd like to use this bike instead of a car (not that I have one). But in the future I wouldn't mind learning how to ride competively.. I'd really like a bike that would be good for health and travelling, then.. I'm a student so I don't want anything too expensive, maybe £200 tops? Must be available in the UK - do you think I'd be better off going to a bike shop or ordering online?
Answer
Hey Rainbow,
Hate to be one of those that echos what you probably do not want to hear but yeah... An inexpensive bike put to use as a regular commuter will have you wishing you'd spent more in the first place.
While I'm not totally against online retailers there are a number of things you have to take into account like what bike is best going to suit your needs? What size frame is best for you? And the real kicker... Who's going to assemble the darn thing? A bike that's been improperly assembled can be a real nightmare to sort out and downright dangerous to ride. Most shops charge dearly for this service and with good reason.
There really is a lot you have to know and specific tools that you have to have to get a bike from out of the box to going safely down the road. Most online retailers make the assumption you already have the skills and tools so any directions that may come with the bike are generic at best and in most instances? Boxed bikes do not come with instructions.
If you have a mate that tells you he's willing to assemble a bike for you? Don't let his grubby paws anywhere near the thing unless he works on bicycles FOR A LIVING! and has ALL the necessary tools to do the job properly!
Used bikes can be a real can of worms as well... While you may find a gem of a bike for little money, you really have to know what you're looking at to be sure and that takes experience.
So my advice is this... Save up some more, Go to a few local bike shops, that's a brick and mortar establishment that sells ONLY bicycles, take a look around and ask some questions. Find out what they charge to assemble a bike,what they charge to check out a used bike, what they have to suggest for a commuter from their stock and see how the pricing stacks up. I think you'll find it's pretty much the same as for what you see online plus assembly. Check out a few shops and pick the one that treats you best. And keep enough in the budget for a good lock, lights and a HELMET and wear the bloody thing EVERY time you ride!
Life is way to short to have a fight with your best friend, she might be mad at you becasue you'd do anything for that guy. but if she's really your best friend she'd live with it. and if she don't then she not your best friend. Hold onto the ones that mean the most to you, and if you find that guy, go after him; you wont regret it later, what you will regret is not going after him and seeing him with another girl and then having to fight for him. Life sucks and it throws you curves, hills to climb, rivers to cross but thats what keep life so unpredictable. It's better that way. Awhile back I saw a couple small motor-driven bikes but they had pedals aswell; what were they?
Lauren R
they looked like something with a max mph of like 50; any idea what the brand name was? they were NOT vespas or gopeds of any sort...
Answer
You saw some real Mopeds. The moped was designed (and required by regulation at one time) to have a 50cc engine or less, pedals as well as motor, top speed not to exceed 30mph (35mph in some places) There were literally hundreds of producers from Italy to China making them (or at least selling them, as many were produced by a single company and marketed under numerous names.) The term Mo (for motor) ped (for pedals) pretty much described them. The concept was for a small commuter vehicle that did not require licensing and fell under the same legal standing as a bicycle. Unfortunately many municipalities decided that they were motor vehicles and started requiring licensing, helmet wear and registration costs that made Mopeds not worth the aggravation, and so they fell by the wayside. Also the 2 cycle engines used were not very reliable and so most have long since gone to the dump.
Looking for entry level bmx with pegs for my 5 year old. Any suggestions under $250?
ThatsWhy
Currently looking at models from GT, Diamondback and Mongoose. Also, should I get aluminum/composite over high-tensil steel? Thanks!
Answer
Please reconsider this. The size needs of a 5 year old will change very quickly and you will end up buying bikes over and over again. But since you asked...
First, BMX bikes are also known as "bicycle motocross" and are made for racing in the dirt... they should never have pegs installed. You are looking for a flatlands or freestyle bike.
Next, keep in mind that pegs are to facilitate tricks and not to carry his buddies around. Few 5 year olds have the brains to think about the potential injuries. If you DO put pegs on the bike put them on one side only, not the front or rear.
Third, all the brands you mentioned have entry level bikes in your price range. Most stunt and freestyle bikes are steel- either Chrome Moly or Hi Tensile while you will find BMX in aluminum and carbon fiber composite(though probably not in your price range). Hi tensile steel is the low end stuff, aluminum is next, then Chrome Moly, then comes carbon fiber. By the way, contrary to another answer, both hiten and Chrome Moly are the same weight, but since Chrome Moly is stronger it can have thinner tube walls. Less material, less weight.
For $250 you can make your choice- ignore brand names but DO get it from a bike shop (not Walmart ot Target, etc). They will fit him properly and offer service as well. The VAST majority of bikes are now made in a handful of factories in China or Taiwan... even if they say "Designed in the US" or "Built in the US (of foreign and domestic parts)".
Finally, make sure he has protective gear and uses it... especially a helmet. One trip to a hospital will be far more expensive than any helmet, and a lot more traumatic for both of you.
hi u guys....what r drop bears?.?
Nicola B
also i read a short article about a certain bird that likes to chase, i read that some people wear hats with eyes drawn on the back....is this true?.
thanks in advance
Answer
Brett has told you the truth.
Drop bears are made up to scare tourists.
We Aussies love doing that, it's one of our favourite things to do.
Magpies do swoop passers-by to protect their nests in springtime.
I do love "But Why??'s" answer though.
This is from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife website.
Magpie attacks
For most of the year magpies are not aggressive, but for four to six weeks during nesting they will often defend their territory vigorously. People walking past may be seen as 'invaders' of the territory, prompting the magpies to fly low and fast over the person clacking their bills as they pass overhead.
The experience of a magpie attack can be quite alarming, but it is usually only a warning. Only occasionally will a bird actually strike the intruder on the head with its beak or claws. If this unusual behaviour persists, there are ways of reducing the risk of physical injury to humans.
If a magpie swoops at you:
Walk quickly and carefully away from the area, and avoid walking there when magpies are swooping.
Make a temporary sign to warn other people.
Magpies are less likely to swoop if you look at them. Try to keep an eye on the magpie, at the same time walking carefully away.
Alternatively, you can draw or sew a pair of eyes onto the back of a hat, and wear it when walking through the area. You can also try wearing your sunglasses on the back of your head.
Wear a bicycle or skateboard helmet. Any sort of hat, even a hat made from an ice cream container or cardboard box, will help protect you.
Carry an open umbrella, or a stick or small branch, above your head but do not swing it at the magpie, as this will only provoke it to attack.
If you are riding a bicycle when the magpie swoops, get off the bicycle and wheel it quickly through the area. Your bicycle helmet will protect your head, and you can attach a tall red safety flag to your bicycle or hold a stick or branch as a deterrent.
Magpies and the law
Magpies are protected throughout NSW, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to the police or the nearest office of the NPWS.
Is there any way to get a magpie removed from a residential area?
That Guy
Before you say "it's just a bird, let it live", read what it is doing. I live in a residential street in Sydney, Australia. Anybody walking or cycling through the street gets attacked numerous times and I have heard of at least two incidents of the magpie's attacks drawing blood.
The children in the street have their bicycle helmets covered in holes and claw marks from the magpie. Many of my neighbours and I do not walk in the street anymore because we are too scared of the magpie. The attacks seem to be getting more common and more vicious every year.
Can I contact my local council or WIRES to get the bird removed?
Answer
I don't know what council area you fall under, but I just checked the DECCW website and found this -
For most of the year magpies are not aggressive, but for four to six weeks during nesting they will often defend their territory vigorously. People walking past may be seen as 'invaders' of the territory, prompting the magpies to fly low and fast over the person clacking their bills as they pass overhead.
Magpies are protected throughout NSW, and it is against the law to kill the birds, collect their eggs, or harm their young. If you feel a magpie is a serious menace, it should be reported to your local council or the nearest office of the NPWS.
Our council here in QLD "actively installs âmagpie alertâ signage where nesting is occurring on public land, and relies on information from the general public about the location of active nesting sites."
They will very very rarely move nesting magpies. This is on the council website about it-
Council is sometimes asked to remove (translocate) swooping male magpies. Translocating the male bird leaves the female and her chicks on their own.
Studies by Tom Nealson from Griffith University have shown that when this occurs, an unattached male will often take on the role of male carer by defending the nest site and helping the female to feed the chicks.
This behaviour suggests that translocation is not a very effective solution to magpie swooping. If no male appears, the female will struggle to feed her hungry chicks, and they may die - a situation that raises serious ethical questions.
Translocation is a last resort action used to remove very aggressive individuals - specifically those that have caused injury.
Is a bike helmet really safe?
Shaz
Recently I fell off my bike and landed on my face, giving me lots of painful facial grazes and cuts...wasn't too nice. I wasn't wearing a helmet at the time but someone told me that it wouldn't have made a difference because I landed on my face and that actually a helmet could have broken my neck or made the injury worse.
Does anyone know if this is true cos it's making me unsure as to whether I should wear a helmet next time I cycle or not?
Answer
In the UK the CTC [1] are against compulsory helmet use. They reason that it has demonstrably damaged the case for cycling in countries where such a law has been introduced.
However, I always wear a helmet. It is sometimes hot and uncomfortable, but I firmly believe that it provides good protection against brain damage. Richard Ballantine [2] was very much of the same opinion in his original Bicycle Book.
Many cycling accidents happen at low speed where the rider is pitched over the handlebars and the head is the first contact with the ground.
If a helmet works and saves a rider from injury, then no government statistic or hospital records will be created. Instead there will be one more helmet purchase as a grateful rider buys a replacement! So any statistics on helmets making an injury worse or not preventing an injury will be substantially skewed by the silent majority of cases.
Now to your specific case: Yep, it must really hurt injuring your face like that. But your face absorbed the impact that your brain could have receieved had you landed slightly differently. The fact that a helmet sticks out about 1.5 inches might have reduced the impact to your face. If a helmet were worn incorrectly (such as tilted right back; something I frequently see) then it might damage your neck. However, worn correctly and with the straps done up, I fail to see how it could make the situation worse. Anyway, facial injuries may be unpleasant and require plastic surgery, but they are a lot more recoverable than brain injuries.
So, on balance, I'd suggest you wear a helmet and ignore the alarmist view that caused you to post your question.
Answer
Cycling is the use of bicycles, or - less commonly - unicycles, tricycles, quadricycles and other similar wheeled human powered vehicles (HPVs) as a means of transport, a form of recreation or a sport. It is done on roads and paths, across open country, through tunnels, over bridges, on snow, or even over ice (icebiking).As a sport, cycling is governed internationally by the Union Cycliste Internationale in Switzerland (for upright bicycles) and by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (for other HPVs, or human-powered vehicles). Cycling for transport and touring is promoted on a European level by the European Cyclists' Federation, with associated members from Great Britain, Japan and elsewhere. Regular conferences on cycling for transport are held under the auspices of Velo City; global conferences are coordinated by Velo MondialIn many countries, the most commonly used vehicle for road transport is a utility bicycle. These have frames with so-called relaxed geometry, protecting the rider from shocks from the road, and easing low speeds steering. Road bikes tend to have a more upright shape and a shorter wheelbase, which make the bike more mobile but harder to ride slowly. The design, coupled with low or dropped handlebars, requires the rider to bend forward more, which reduces air resistance at high speed.
The price of a new bicycle can range from US$50 to more than US$20,000[3], depending on quality, type and weight (the most exotic road bicycles can weigh as little as 3.2kg (7 lb)) [4]). Being measured for a bike and taking it for a test ride are recommended before buying.
The drivetrain components of the bike should also be considered. A middle grade dérailleur is sufficient for a beginner, although many utility bikes come equipped with hub gears. If the rider plans a significant amount of hillclimbing, a triple-crank (three chainrings) front gear system may be preferred. Otherwise, the relatively lighter and less expensive two chainrings may be better.
Many road bikes include clipless pedals to which special shoes attach via a cleat, permitting the rider to pull on the pedals as well as push. Other possible accessories for the bicycle include locks, mudguards (UK)/fenders (US), luggage carriers and pannier bags, water bottles and bottle cages.
For basic maintenance and repairs, cyclists can choose to carry a pump, a spare inner tube, a CO2 cartridge, a puncture repair kit and tyre levers. Cycling can be more efficient and comfortable with special shoes, gloves, and shorts. In wet weather, riding can be more tolerable with waterproof clothes, such as cape, jacket, trousers and overshoes.
Items legally required in some jurisdictions, or voluntarily adopted for safety reasons, include bicycle helmets, generator or battery operated lighting, and audible signaling devices such as a bell or horn. Extras include studded tires and a bicycle computer.
Which Bicycle Helmet should I buy?
Alice
Okay, I'm thinking about buying a new bicycle helmet.
I have two options.
Bell Multi-sport Faction
http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2192693&cp=3077572.2716578.2712466.1066858&parentPage=family
Or a Bell Solar Helmet
http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2212013&cp=3077572.2716578.2712466.1066850&parentPage=family
I could spring for the extra $10 for the other helmets if I wanted to.
Anyways, Which should I buy? The Faction is more fashionable and the latter is more, ventilated.
They're both CPSC certified, so I have two choices, fashion or ventilated?
I'll be riding to and from school, so cold mornings, and hot afternoons.
I'm thinking of also buying a mirror on my helmet or my handle bar, too geeky?
Thanks you for the answers!
Answer
Both helmets look perfectly suitable. Go with what you like.
I would stay away from helmet mounted mirrors. Having a sharp stick with glass attached that near your eyes is a bad idea in the event of a crash.
-----
Edit: Now that I think about it, try both helmets on, and go with the one that fits better. A well-fitting helmet will be more protective if you ever need it.
What is the best mirror system for a bicycle that actually works?
blooole
Answer
For me, the kind that clips to your helmet, so you don't have to look down, and you can scan the mirror by moving your head a little.
Baby in a bike seat- what's the youngest age?
Mrs. Kelly
I want to get a bike seat for my baby so she can ride with me. What is the minimum age she can be to ride/wear a helmet? Anyone know?
Answer
Obviously a child can't be on a bike until they can safely wear a helmet.
http://www.helmets.org/little1s.htm
Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:
Maurice Keenan, MD, from the American Academy of Pediatrics [21], requested that a minimum age of 1 year be reflected on the label for helmets intended for children under age 5. This would better convey the message that infants (children under age 1) should not be passengers on a bicycle under any circumstance.
The Commission agrees with the commenter that children under 1 year of age should not be on bicycles. Children are just learning to sit unsupported at about 9 months of age. Until this age, infants have not developed sufficient bone mass and muscle tone to enable them to sit unsupported with their backs straight. Pediatricians advise against having infants sitting in a slumped or curled position for prolonged periods. This position may even be exacerbated by the added weight of a bicycle helmet on the infantâs head. Because pediatricians recommend against having children under age 1 as passengers on bicycles, the Commission does not want the certification label to imply that children under age 1 can ride safely.
That explains why you will not find a child helmet on the market sized for a tiny tot. You certainly do not want to ride with a bare-headed child, and in some places it is illegal. In fact, several states have laws against taking children under one year of age on a bicycle, even with a helmet.
Parents love their babies and love their bicycles, so it is natural to want to put the two together. That thought occurs to every bicycling parent, generally before the child is born. We see messages on the Internet indicating that some parents do put their children in baby seats of one design or another and take them along on trailers starting as young as five weeks. Others use a baby backpack. At slightly older ages, people use front or rear-mounted child seats. A few (mostly in the UK) use sidecars. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. A disclaimer: our purpose here is to cover the risks, so you know what you are getting into. We are hearing more these days about undiagnosed brain injuries, with symptoms too subtle for doctors to detect, but very real to families. And that comes to mind whenever someone asks us about babies and biking. We worry about your six-week-old entering the first grade six years from now with a small but detectable mental handicap. That is alarmist; this is an alarmist page.
http://www.ibike.org/education/infant.htm
Infants: Child Seats Vs. Trailers Vs. Backpacks Vs. Third-wheel Cycles
The primary determinant of when an infant can join his or her parents on bike rides is the strength of the the child's neck. Because of the jostling and the additional weight of a helmet (8-10 oz.), this is a few months after a baby can first hold their head up. Note: Some jurisdictions have laws requiring passengers on bicycles to be at least one year old.
Usually by age 12 months parents can start checking with the child's physician to see if they have the neck development to safely go for a bike ride. Most toddlers' neck and shoulder muscles can tolerate the weight of a helmet and absorb shock from bumps in the road at 1 years old.
We know of no comprehensive study on the best method to carry an infant on a bike and there are risks associated with all of them.. Here are some factors to consider:
At what age can a baby use....?
A bike seat??
I want to start riding my bike with my daughter...she is 9.5 months...is she old enough? Or is should I wait? What age is ok?
Answer
At an absolute bare minimum the child has to be able to wear a bike helmet, which means their neck must be strong enough to support the weight. That happens at about 1 year of age and parents are advised to discuss it with their pediatrician -though I do not actually believe that pediatricians or family doctors have *any* training in this.
In some places (NY for example) it is the law that no child under age 1 be attached to a bike in any way.
