Bmx and skateboarding helmet?

Why do bmxers and skaters wear this style of helmet: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/317a-Hs9vgL._AA280_.jpg
instead of bike helmets like this: http://www.vcuhealth.org/virginiasafekids/images/red-helmet.jpg ?
Is it just preferance or is a traditional skate/bmx thing. Most of the ppl u see on tv are wearing the '' skate '' helmet.

The first helmet is more of a trditional BMX/Skate helmet, designed to protect all the soft areas of the head, whereas the second helmet is designed for streamlined racing bikes, not so much BMX or Skateboarding. Besides, the second helmet is a little silly looking. lol

What are the best skate style bike helmets for under 40$ The ones I found already are the poc recepter and the fox transistion. Any other ones you like that are under 40$
