Are we required to wear bike helmets when we go biking?

the best bike helmets on Shimano Single-Speed Freewheels - Mountain Bike Cassettes
the best bike helmets image

smart guy

Or is that just a suggestion. I was told that if we are caught biking without a bike helmet we will get a fine.
I live in Texas. And, when I bike, I usually bike on the sidewalk at a relatively slow speed.

Answer
It depends where you live and where you ride.

When I'm in my nieghborhood at slow speeds, a helmet is just as stupid of an idea as it is to not wear one when I'm mountain biking.

Freedom to use good judgement is supposed to be the American way. Unfortunately our legal system has forced us to behave and think like we're sheep.

What kind of bike helmet do I need to get?

Alexandra

Basically, I hate bike helmets because I hate the way they feel: itchie, hot, tight, but my dad says if I'm going to bring my bike to college, i have to wear one. I was wondering I they make helmets tht breathe better for people like me who just hate them.
No need to be an asshole @well sell

Answer
Basically they all meet basic safety standards, but more expensive ones will stand up better and because they are stronger they can have less material and more ventilation. In reality you can tell by price and by examination which will be cooler and lighter. I recently switched to a Lazer (brand) helmet and it's worth the extra $$. I suspect your experience has been with budget helmets ..

If your father insists maybe he would be willing to pay the premium for a good helmet??? :-)

My son has been been riding a pedal bike without training wheels since he was three. He has a Honda PW50. We have a helmet and riding pants although the riding pants are getting small as well as elbow pads and shin guards. At this point he is not out riding on trails mostly around the dirt and gravel parking lot or fields. He wore down the rubber on a pair of boots this last weekend they were not riding boots.

What kind of yo-yo would be good for my 9 year old son to begin with?

Dan Sheppa

Just starting out. Seems interested, but don't want to spend to much. Any ideas?? Looking for a 10-30 dollar option. Thanks.

Answer
Don't go with a Duncan Butterfly or Duncan imperial--they will only slow down his learning curve. That said their are many fine yo-yo's in this price range. I have over 50 yo-yos and I've never spent more than $30.

If you have a Meijer store nearby start with a Duncan Limelight. It's got a wooden axel (fixed) but it comes apart so stuck string can be removed and the axel is replaceable. It's $6 at Meijer. Of course you can also find it online.

My second reccomendation is the Duncan complete yo-yo kit. You can only order it online. But for the price you get two great yo-yos. http://www.yo-yo.com/product_det.asp?ID=98 You will need to get extra friction stickers (makes the yo-yo return) and I always reccomend extra string. Yes, I know this kit has three yo-yo's, but I think the reflex is little better than a butterfly or imperial.

Duncan Freehand Zero is a slightly smaller yo-yo than the Freehand included in the above kit. I actually prefer it's size. It might be a better fit for a smaller hand of a 9-yo.

Yomega has numerous find yo-yo's. Some come with the Yomega Mania DVD. This is a great learning tool. In the past few months I purchased a Yomega Hot Shot and Xodus II that had the DVD. The Xodus is probably not the right yo-yo for you son. The Hot Shot is propably too advanced, but with some practice he could probably master it pretty quickly. The Sabre Raider if you can get it with the DVD is also a great choice, though if he gets really good, he might outgrow it in six-months.

If you have a Toys R Us nearby, they have a pretty good selection. My local Toys R Us carries the Duncan metal drifter, the Yomega Xodus II, Yomega Fireball (looping yo-yo), pocket pros (they've got ones with spiders in them). The Drifter is advanced, but with some work he should be able to master it.

Two online yo-yo stores I'd reccomend are http://www.yoyoguy.com The 1-800 number is on the top of every page and they respond within one business day if you e-mail them with questions. http://www.yoyonation They also have great customer service and can answer your questions.

Yo-yo factory, Yo-yo jam also have a great selection of yo-yo's, I just don't have as many of them and I primarily throw Duncans and Yomegas.

I bought my nephews yo-yo's for Christmas a couple years ago--I got them each a Duncan Freehand Zero and a Duncan ProFire. Though this was before the Limelight came out. Still the ProFire is a good looping yo-yo.

Finally get extra string. Yo-yo guy has the best prices on strings.

Let me put these ramblings together
Duncan Complete yoyo kit.
Duncan Freehand Zero
Duncan Limelight
Duncan ProFire
Yomega Hot Shot
Yomega Sabre Raider
Duncan Metal Drifter
Pocket Pros Stinger (I can't remember the names of the other two they have with spiders in them) You may be able to find this at K-mart, BUT believe it or not I found them near the bike helmets.

Hope this helps a bit.

Me and my husband have a month old baby and wanted to go on a bike ride together and were just curious if it would be even legal to have a baby with you in one of those baby bjorn front harness things. Obviously we would just buy a child carrier seat but you cant use those until they are 1 year. If it is illegal does anyone know a seat or anything like that so we can take her on a bikeride with us? Also for the record it is just like an old school cruiser bike not a mountain bike or anything.

Thanks

Answer
Legal...? Yes or No, depending on where you live (i.e. LOCAL jurisdiction and state laws). For example, in California, children less than six years or under 60 pounds MUST be in an DOT-approved restraining seat and secured. If less than 18 years old, they must also be wearing a safety helmet, even on a bicycle. Not just any old helmet, either. It must be fastened and securely fitted, and meet The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards.

Is it Wise...? Safe...? Nope! You are at far greater risk on a bicycle, because traffic doesn't see or acknowledge you like they would a car. There are also pot holes on the roads that can cause head and neck problems to very young children.

Answer
Its great that you're doing research now.

Take a motorcycle safety foundation class if you haven't already. Get the proper safety equipment, gloves, boots and helmet to start with.

Be aware that most motorcycle accidents come in the first 6 months of riding a motorcycle. And be aware that if you or someone near you, makes a mistake, it can end up serious (and yes, I've been to a funeral for a 18 year old beginning rider).

If you're looking for a used bike, then you might visit the local library and see if they carry old editions of some of the cycle magazines.

Good websites to look at bike that are currently for sale are cycletrader and craigslist.org.

Answer
Well, if you like the skate helmet styling, you should check out the Giro Makai or Flak helmets....they're cheap ($20 to $40) and they come in some "girl" colors, too. They look pretty cool....I have two of them (in non-girl colors) that I use for urban riding. There are lots of other skate lids from several manufacturers.....lots of colors and designs on them, too. Check www.jensonusa.com or www.danscomp.com for choices.

If you want a regular helmet, the Bell Metro and Giro Xen are cool and seem to fit your desires. The Xen is expensive, but worth it.....you can find model year closeouts for $60 to $90 but the normal price is around $120.

EDIT: Ok, now those Nutcase helmets in the post below mine are just COOL! The correct link is www.nutcasehelmets.com .....and I'm glad he shared that company! :o)

Would it be O. K.?

Q. Someone asked a similarly phrased question about something else and it made me wonder.
What if people who didn't believe in imaginary deities went door to door with a science book and tried to convert people to their sanity?
Religious nutcases do it all the time. How many times have you answered the doorbell to find a bible carrying, tie wearing, religious zealot with a goofy looking bicycle helmet asking if you had "come to know jesus as your personal savior"?
I wonder what the response would be if the shoe were on the other foot?

Answer
The response would be something like this:

I have a bike trailer for my two babies but I don't know how is best to keep my 14week old safest. A helmet won't fit until at least 18 months and her car seat won't fit in with my 2 year old as well :0( Don't want to be stuck in a stuffy, hot car all summer so would really like to keep fit and take them out on the bike! Help!! Thanks in advance :0)

Answer
The infant in the car seat cannot ride with the toddler -- so just get a bicycle child seat http://www.amazon.com/Bell-Classic-Bicycle-Child-Carrier/dp/B000ISXSSA for the toddler -- kid will be much happier being up there behind you and watching around the road. Also should be available at Target, locally.

Where can someone find bicycle helmets made from recycled materials?

I'm working on a grant to help a non-profit organization set up a bike safety rodeo and in order to be eligible for the funds we need to find safety equipment made from recycled materials (i.e. bicycle helmets, safety vests, cones, flags) I'm having a hard time finding manufacturers who provide these things. Online sites would be great because then I can print off the products and prices. Thanks!

When choosing materials to make helmets, what physical properties would you look for?

Mariella M

You work for a company that makes helmets: motorcycle helmets, bicycle helmets, baseball and football helmets. When choosing materials to make these helmets, what physical properties would you look for? explain

Answer
Durability: the material may be impacted by another object with greater
hardness, but sustain little or no permanent damage to its own structure.
Hardness: the material needs to have a hardness that is as great as
possible so that it will be protective to the wearer when impacted.
Resiliance: the material needs to be able to absorb an impact with
some degree of deformation, but return to its original shape when the
impact force has been removed. This absorbtion of energy is critical,
because one does not want the impact force to be transferred to the
wearer. The idea is to sacrifice damage to the helmet material, and have
it absorb the energy of impact, rather than have that energy passed on
to the wearers head.
Light weight: the material should be as light as possible for comfort to the wearer.
Easily shaped: the materials need to be easily formed by standard manufacturing methods, so that it may be built efficiently and for the
lowest price. Efficient methods include processes like hot-melt molding,
blow-forming, and machining.
Low cost: the basic materials need to be as low cost as possible to make
the finished product affordable and competitive with similar products on
the market.

What can I do now that I have my motorcycle permit?

best bike helmet for 18 month old on Western Shirt,US Marshall Tweed Vest,Old West Preacher's Vest,Old ...
best bike helmet for 18 month old image

DK

I'm living in Illinois (also an IL permit, fyi), and I'm not sure if I'm now able to ride on my own, when i'm able to ride etc. I've heard that I need someone over 21 'supervising'. Does anyone know if there's a penalty for not riding with an over-21 adult? Also, insurance-wise, what do I need to do once I buy my motorbike?

Answer
There are two types of motorcycle licenses in Illinois. The Class L type is for motor-driven cycles with an engine displacement of 150 cubic centimeters or less. The Class M license is for motorcycles with a displacement of 151cc or more.

Teens 16 and 17 years old can obtain a motorcycle license by following this process:

1. Apply for a learner's permit (also known as an instructional permit) for a conventional license.
2. Attend and complete a driver education course at school.
3. Apply for a 12-month motorcycle learner's permit.
4. Study the Motorcycle Manual and the Rules of the Road.
5. Enroll in the 20-hour Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Motorcycle Rider Course. This course is free. Find out more by calling IDOT's Motorcycle Safety Project at (800) 892-9607 or (800) 642-9589.
6. Hold your learner's permit for at least three months. During this time, you are allowed to ride the motorcycle only in daylight hours while supervised by a qualified motorcyclist.
7. Pass the motorcycle road test at any local Secretary of State driver services office.

A new motorcycle license costs $10.

If you are 18 or over, most of the same requirements still apply. The main exception is that if you complete the IDOT Motorcycle Rider Course, you can waive the road test. The fee for the first-time Class M or Class L endorsement is $10. Renewals are $5.

Riders will be expected to demonstrate proper control of the motorcycle at all times. This will include starting it, making slow and fast turns, driving in traffic, and stopping safely and smoothly. The Motorcycle Manual offers detailed information on how to execute the moves that will be required on the test. The manual also provides sample questions for the written portion of the test.

You have to have your bike insured before riding it on the road (legally). Buy a bike, call an insurance company and negotiate insurance, pay them (or they will bill you) and they send (snail main & possible e-mail) proof of insurance for the bike. Carry the proof when you ride.

Lastly, IL is a helmet-optional state. Take the right option & wear a helmet. I recommend a full face helmet, if you like yourself when you look in the mirror in the morning.

husband and i want to start biking, but have 10 month old son...?

mommy of 2

what is the safest way, if there is a safe way, to bike with our 10 month old son?

Answer
There is NO safe way to take a 10 month old riding. The bumping and jostling on the road can cause injuries similar to "shaken baby syndrome". You may not feel it as much, but he will. His neck muscles aren't strong enough yet and he will be bouncing around in the trailer or bike seat. You won't be able to find a helmet that fits properly, either. And don't buy it big and let him grow into it.

Check your local laws. In New York, the minimum legal age for kids in trailers or bike seats is 1 year (although personally, I think it should be at least 18 months)

For his safety and well-being, wait at least a few more months before you take him with you.

How can you legally travel on a 50cc scooter with a toddler?

jeff_rulz_

It is legal in Missouri to drive without a license or helmet on a 50cc scooter and I would like to purchase one to cruise around town. However, I am concerned about how much I would use it. I would use it more frequently if I could legally carry my 3 year old with me. Just curious if it's legal and what I should get to protect him (other than a bicycle helmet).

Thanks!

Answer
A bicycle helmet will do NO good.
3 years simply isn't big enough.

I'm all for kids riding, my son sat behind me at 6. There are minimum requirements, even if not written into law (they are law elsewhere): Dedicated seat for passenger, dedicated footrest for passenger (which they must be able to use), handhold(s) for passenger. Helmet - and a styrofoam cooler is for beer, not pavement.
The passenger must be large enough (and understand enough) to be able to hold on. The helmet must fit properly - good luck finding a hat for the little melon.

I added an extra set of pegs for Jr. The law said he must reach, did not specify must be in original location.

Mike S

I'm looking for an offroad/motocross-style bike helmet that I plan to use for BMX. Are there any companies that make cheap motorcycle helmets (under $50?) or replicas for bicycles that look like an offroad helmet? Thanks!

Answer
I think you're wanting to get a full-face style helmet, right? If that's what you mean by offroad and moto. I don't think I've ever seen any for $50 or under, not even on super closeout sales. There are some good ones that won't break the bank, though.

Pryme makes a decent one that usually sells for $65-$80 and I think Pro-Tec has one in that range, too. Bell, Azonic, and Giro all have some cheaper models if you shop around. Full-face helmets can get expensive quickly, but most of them are $140 or less, several of them in the $90-$120 range.

Look at http://www.pricepoint.com , http://www.nashbar.com , http://www.jensonusa.com , and http://www.blueskycycling.com for good helmet deals. Nashbar and Performance usually have good closeouts and often offer coupons for an even greater deal on a helmet.

Also, check out the Pro-Tec Ace Dig....not a full-face, but it's kinda retro. Sort of a skate lid with a visor and some nice shaping. You might like it, and it's different. :o)

Also, check out the Pro-Tec Ace

Do you have to have a license to drive a scooter that is under 50 cc in?

pammysue

Do you have to have a license to drive a scooter that is under 50 cc in California?

Answer
California legislature seeks help control pollution, so it has make the registration processes of other vehicles, such as scooters and mopeds, more appealing.

Keep in mind that the DMV definitions of these vehicles might be very different from what you consider to be a scooter or moped.

Scooters
The California Motorcycle Driver Handbook describes a scooter as a motorized two-wheeled vehicle with a floorboard designed for standing while driving. The scooter may have a driver's seat, but if the seat interferes with the operator's ability to stand while driving the vehicle is not a scooter. A typical scooter also has the ability to be driven by human propulsion.

The California Vehicle Code does not require the driver of a motorized scooter to carry registration, have license plates on display, or carry liability insurance (although you might inquire with your insurance company about potential coverage).

Scooter navigators must be at least 16 years old, get properly licensed, wear a helmet, and know where he/she can legally drive the scooter.

Scooters may be driven on bike paths and trails, but never on sidewalks. They can also be used on roadways with bike lanes, as well as on streets with no bike lanes and speed limits of 25 mph or less. When on a road with no bike lane, scooters should be ridden as close to the right hand curb as possible (unless passing or turning right).

Refer to the section below on licensing requirements and how to obtain the proper scooter license.

Mopeds or Motorized Bicycles
The California Motorcycle Driver Handbook describes two different types of motorized bicycles, or mopeds.

The first type is a two- or three-wheeled vehicle, not capable of more than 30 mph on level ground with:

Fully functional pedals for human propulsion.
An internal combustion engine producing less than two gross brake horsepower with automatic transmission.
An electric motor with or without pedals.
The second type of moped has an electric motor of less than 1,000 watts and cannot go above 20 mph on level ground (even if assisted by human power). The motor must also stop when the brakes are applied or starter switch released.

The "20 mph" classification of a moped may be driven without a license, proof of financial responsibility, or a moped license plate. The driver need only be 16 years old and wearing a properly fitting bicycle helmet.

On the other hand, the quicker moped requires a Class M2 driver license and registration with the CA DMV. Furthermore, you will want to check with your insurance carrier on possible coverage regarding your moped.

To register your moped simply submit a Motorized Bicycle Instruction/Application form (REG 230) by mail or at you local DMV.

You can't ride your moped on freeways or any type of bike path or trail, unless local law has given permission. You can drive your moped in lanes designated for bicycles, but be considerate of other bikers.

Acquiring the Necessary License for Your Moped or Scooter
The moped with the 20 mph cap can be driven without a license, but the driver must be at least 16 years old.

You will need to obtain a Class M2 license if you choose to go the way of the scooter or the moped with a maximum speed limit of 30 mph.

To secure your Class M2 license simply:

Make an appointment. at your local DMV,
Submit an original DL 44 application form.
Provide a thumb print.
Have your picture taken at the DMV.
Pay the $27 application fee.
Pass a vision exam.
Pass the traffic laws and signs test.
If you are under 21, complete the California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle training course and present the Certificate of Motorcycle Training (DL 389) to the DMV. You won't have to take the motorcycle driving test if you already have a current California driver license.

Five reasons why college-nfl is better than nfl-nfl?

Ferdinand

Im going to be debating that college nfl is better because I have no choice! My college is under severe nfl frenzy and now I will have to prove that college nfl is better than nfl-nfl. I don't really care about this 3-sec sport where players stand around for the most part doing nothing and sitting through half of the game. Wearing ballerina tight-pants and pading themselves like babies and wearing bicycle helmets! Id rather watch real football. Anyways can anybody give me five reasons why college-nfl is better than nfl-nfl? Thank you.
(I don't say football because it shouldn't be called that!)

Go red devils!!!

Answer
first off, there is no such thing as college-nfl. its either college football or national football league. the nfl is a professional football league which is mostly business. players get paid. in college, MOST players do not get paid and its called the national collegiate athletic association and is not the national football league. there is other leagues like the united football league and the canadian football league. the ncaa is not apart of any of these leagues. now for your ?
reasons
1. college players do not get paid, not as business like
2. the college atmosphere is way different than nfl games
3. more teams
4. teams upset more than nfl ex: 2011 rose bowl, apalachain st. vs michigan in late 2000's
5. ncaa stars will look better comparing to slower non-future nfl players

honestly the nfl is better but college is cool too

can you legally drive a gas assisted bike on sidewalks in the state of fl?

ray man

i want to know that as soon as you add a gas engine in your bike does that mean do you have to use roadways or can you continue to use the sidewalks???also do you mind refrecing your information with something reliable
and can you please be helpful and not answer my question with another question...kinda defeats the purpose of me even posting up this question

Answer
Is actually against most city, county and a few state laws to operate a human powered bicycle on a Public Walking Path or Sidewalk.
Bicycles, as defined by Florida law can be used on sidewalks, they must obey Pedestrian Rules, the powered part is what is at question here.
Sidewalk riding
(Section 316.2065(10) and (11), F.S.)

(63) BICYCLE PATH.--Any road, path, or way that is open to bicycle travel, which road, path, or way is physically separated from motorized vehicular traffic by an open space or by a barrier and is located either within the highway right-of-way or within an independent right-of-way.

(77) MOPED.--Any vehicle with pedals to permit propulsion by human power, having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels; with a motor rated not in excess of 2 brake horsepower and not capable of propelling the vehicle at a speed greater than 30 miles per hour on level ground; and with a power-drive system that functions directly or automatically without clutching or shifting gears by the operator after the drive system is engaged. If an internal combustion engine is used, the displacement may not exceed 50 cubic centimeters.

[Per Florida DMV Procedure RS-61, Mopeds as defined in 320.01(28) above are NOT titled, per § 319.20 however, they are registered pursuant to § 320.0803(1). A bill of sale, vehicle registration certificate, Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin or an affidavit from the applicant certifying that he or she is the legal and rightful owner of the vehicle is required.]
Florida never really has addressed that issue, so I fall back to DMV for guidance.
If is under x Horsepower and many other things, yes, you may.
While a bike does not have to be Registered, the Moped laws may still apply because of the HP Rule.
That is the contentious area.
All of the Florida laws are in the sources. Most of them are very easy to understand, any point you have a question on should be asked or directed to DMV. or your local constabulary.
As I see it, I can ride an electric thing on a sidewalk, those mobility chars, some electric scooters, those skateboard things with handles, yeah, those things may be allowed.
I do know that a Medical Supply place sells Street Approved Transport, those can be electric or gas powered and are all over 2bhp.
Those have to be registered and some tagged, often no DL required.
Please read those laws carefully and always wear a helmet when operating a bicycle or moped or motorcycle.
Had a buddy that was a Florida State Trooper.

Should I get a motorcycle license if I don't have a motorcycle?

Andrea

My boyfriend has recently purchased a motorcycle - he's been riding for years & now has been able to purchase his own bike. I'm not overly wild about the idea of riding a motorcycle, but he is crazy about them & loves to ride & very much wants me to join him on his new bike. I think it's important to show interests in each others hobbies so I'm attempting to set my fears aside. But my number one concern is safety (obviously) I have purchased a DOT regulated/ snell certified full helmet, an armored jacket with plates on the back, arms & shoulders, riding gloves, armored pants & boots. I know, it may be overkill, but I'm the type of gal who'd rather play it extra safe rather than be sorry.

Anyways - with that being the background to my main question - would it be wise to take the motorcycle drivers Ed class at my local community college for $250 & see about getting my license? At this point in time I have no intention of buying my own bike, but things run across my head like what if I'm put in a situation where I would need to drive? Prime example would be if he had too much to drink somewhere, I don't want to be stranded because I don't know how to ride - but also just being able to drive it from point A to point B in a pinch - things like that

I obviously have a tendency to over think/ over plan things - I'm the kind of person who wants to be prepared for any situation that may arise. Is it silly to spend the money on a license if I currently have no intention of owning my own motorcycle?
Thanks for all the info thus far - I have contemplated in a year a may buy my own "beginner" bike - like 250 CC - I'm only 130 lbs at 5'9" so I don't exactly have a lot of weight behind me.

Answer
First off... glad to see you've bought the proper gear for safety... passenger or rider should always be thinking safety first... good job! Also, you say you have a little fear... that is a GOOD thing to have... being fearless on a bike usually means you're going to do stupid things (as a driver)... as a passenger, having a bit of fear means you don't 100% trust the driver (or understand how to be a passenger)... which means the class would be a good thing for you... and you should really talk about riding with your BF... how to sit, how to hold on, how to move, what to do in emergencies, etc...

A license makes you legal to drive, not proficient... take the course, learn about the basics, learn to be a better passenger, but if you don't actually take the time to get practice on the "front seat", then the license/endorsement is pretty much useless. I've held my endorsement since 1983, and there were a few years in the 90's where I could not ride... took me a weekend in the parking lots to "re-train" my body before I felt confident to get back out on the streets... Just because you have a license does not mean you can jump on and ride anything, anywhere, anytime... especially "in a pinch", and especially with a passenger!

My suggestion for you is to take the course anyway... but think real hard about getting your own bike and riding your own bike WITH him... two bikes on the road are safer, and you'll both be more maneuverable without the added weight of a passenger!

Oh, and if he has not taken the course... encourage him to take it too.. it will make him a safer motorcyclist and may (depending on the state) reduce his (and your) insurance rates, too!

I want to take up mountain biking, how can I start?

No Name AT

I'm looking for a new hobby. As a kid I used to really enjoy biking. Now I want to take up mountain biking. What is everything I will need to start? What gear and accessories? Also any general knowledge or advice for a beginer would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Step 1. Do you have at least $500 to $550 for a decent entry level bike? Yep, I said entry level.
http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/nevada_17_d

You'll also need an under-seat bag to store a spare tube, tire levers and multi-use folding bike tool. A good frame pump or mini-pump & of course water bottle cage & bottle.

And don't forget a good helmet. This is a decent one for the price.

Can anyone recommend a good infant seat for my bike?

bike helmet 6 month old image

brwneydgrl

I have a Beach cruiser style bike and I am looking for a seat for my 6 month old. Any recommendations?

Answer
A pull behind trailer. The reason for this recommendation is because the trailer will at least stay upright if you fall, and has more space around to protect baby if it does happen to roll over. A bike seat you put on your bike doesn't offer baby any protection if you fall. That said good luck finding a helmet for baby to wear, because even in the trailer s/he should wear one.

At what age did you put your baby in a baby bike seat and take them for a ride?

lilsnob868

How old were they? I researched it on the internet and they recommend them to be one year old. My son is 9 months and sits up well and everything. All i have to do is buy him a bike helmet online. So what age was your baby? thanks
if you fall the baby has a helmet on duh? and he is securely strapped in his bike seat.
is the baby trailer safe? does it securely strap the baby in? does it just lay down or can you sit your baby up?

Answer
I don't have the seat, I have the pull behind trailer. I started using it as soon as I got it, my son was 6 months old. I like and trust the trailer more than I would the seat. If for some reason I should fall, the trailer will remain upright. There's a roll bar in it too, so if it does flip I know he's safe.
*edit* He gets strapped in

Do I need extra padding for my bicycle helmet?

I bought a Giro helmet and it came with extra padding (4 extra small foam pads) that I could add if necessary, but should I? I'm trying to get into riding for fun now and I'm kind of lost when it comes to the equipment. If I do need it, where is the most important place to put the extra padding on the inside. The helmet I have is the Indicator if that info helps. Thanks y'all.

Answer
A good basic test whether a helmet fits correctly is if the helmet sits onto your head, not on top of your head like a little beanie. This helmet would be too small and you would either need a larger helmet or possibly replace thicker pads with thinner pads. The helmet is too big if your head is like a bell ringer inside a bell... lol. In this case you need a smaller helmet or thicker foam pads.

If you determine you need different pads, most likely you'll either replace current pads which sometimes are held in place with Velcro, or add the foam pads in convenient places inside the helmet, typically at the front by your forehead and the sides.

If you are strongly interested in science, will you please answer my questions about tornadoes?

Marie Tany

1. Do huge tornadoes, like the one in Oklahoma today, happen in Saskatchewan or Alberta (two provinces in Canada)?
2. If you knew a tornado was coming, do you have enough time to get into your car and drive away? I am moving into a trailer park out of town and there is nowhere to hide (due to not having a basement). Is it safe to get as far away from the town/area as possible?
3. Do yo believe that government can actually cause these storms to happen? Do you believe that the storms are this big because the government wants to lower their population? Please let me know your thoughts on those conspiracy theories.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these.

Answer
no the goverment isnt causing them. In certain parts of the country YES you can drive away because the roads are set up N S E W and STRAIGHT. You can drive SSTRAIGHT aaway from anything but in the most of the coungtry, the roads loop around and raods are NOT NSEW. (north south east or west). It depends where you live. Also, buy a bicycle helmet and keep near your designated storm shelter to protect your head. I actually also have ropes to tie my kids to my body and tie us to the faucet (which is cemeted into the ground) incase we have a tornado here.

What could be the cause of this headache?

I have had a headache all day today, Could it be a sinus headache because the weather has been changing a lot lately. Could it be from stress, because i have been stressed out from football. Or could it be from football, because today i got hit in the helmet and every since that hit i didn't have a headache after the hit, i just had that feeling that you get when your bell is rung. But anyways what caused this headache and how could i get rid of it? I know to take Ibuprofen and sleep but is there anything else.

Answer
Itâs probably stress related.

Plagued with headaches from childhood to middle age I have had many different types: Migraines, Cluster, Allergic, Visual and mild. The following has helped me and others, I AM NOT A DOCTOR and I recommend that you make an appointment to see one and possibly consider counseling.

This is not a substitute for seeing a Doctor or a counselor. However, if you read this and follow the recommendations at the END you may be headache free before the appointment date(s).

What your DDS, ER, MD or chiropractor may not tell you are that most headaches are STRESS related and they can be and usually are triggered by conditioning. If you can identify the conditioned triggers of your headaches you can break the cycle of stress aggravating a headache and the headache causing more stress, fueling a very disabling negative feedback cycle. Break the cycle by:

Reduce headache symptoms such as, nausea, vomiting and vertigo.
Try inducing relaxation.
Teach your body to be more tolerant towards headache triggers.
Try improving blood-circulation to your brain.

Here are a few common types of headaches:

SUBDURAL Hematoma headaches are caused by trauma. If you have suffered a HEAD INJURY please stop reading this and go to the nearest hospital Emergency Room NOW.

MIGRAINE headaches are usually one sided, more common in females and characterized by at least one of the following; sensitivity to light, pain behind one eye, throbbing brought on by bright lights, chocolate, cheese, red wine or menstrual cycle. You can also have a visual aura around lights and things may taste odd.

HYPERTENSION headaches are at the top and back of your head and throb. You usually wake up with this headache and after about 3 to 4 hours it subsides and may be caused by high blood pressure. You may need medicines to reduce your high blood pressure.

CLUSTER headaches can be seen in an adolescent to adult, more common in males, one sided, usually over temple or eye area, may have a blood shot eye(s), and may wake you up at night, runny nose, sweating, tearing of the eyes, usually worse in Spring or Fall (allergy season) and lasts 15 min. to 12 hrs.

MUSCULAR TENSION headaches feels: band-like distribution around head - like wearing a very tight head band and is brought on by stress, tension, fatigue and work.

CERVICOGENIC (neck caused) headaches - characterized by possible sharp pain behind your ear at the base of the skull along with correlated shoulder pain which can last for days and weeks at a time until misalignment is corrected. Medications provide only short term relief when taken.

SINUS headaches are localized in nature; certain positions are worse like the nose area, steady throb, and worse in the morning and may be seasonal.

Rounding it out are Temporal, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Brain Tumor headaches.

With the exception of the last three types of headache and SUBDURAL Hematoma trauma headaches there are SIX home remedies that I use and that may work for you as they do/did for me. This is a routine;

(1) Drink 16 to 24 ounces of water as dehydration may cause headaches. Dehydration is stress.

(2) Eat a banana! My MOST skeptical of friends was SO DESPERATE he eventually tried it and claims that it cures 40% of his headaches/migraines and gives some relief of the other 60%! Bananas are loaded with potassium which helps alleviate all headaches. In addition it is very filling and an empty stomach is stress.

(3) Take your chosen OTC meds, if any.

(4) Take a pleasant shower.

(5) De-stress by; turning off the phone, TV, the computer, the clock and donât watch the news!

(6) Lay down for a nap. To unplug the brain you are only going to think only about what else you can do to de-stress.

This is a routine I use to break the headache cycle. You could do the same or add other stress reducers, such as: cold compresses, ear plugs, sleep visors herbal teas, etc. Itâs important to have a routine so that you can get CONTROL of the headaches and not vice-a-versa.

Knowledge is power. Learn more about headaches and get more control and empowerment over them. Start at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headache Also try: http://www.headache-treatment-options.com/

Hope this helps!

can you wear a motorcross helmet on a normal motorcycle?

Sophie

a motor cycle i would use on the road, would it be enough protection if i fell off?

Answer
yes you can, there is not much difference.

none are "enough" protection but they are both of roughly equal protection and strength

the main difference is with dirt bikes you normally use goggles and with road bike helmets you can use flip up visors.

both are fine, as long as you are wearing a DOT approved helmet, that is the main thing.

The answer above has a good point but there are many DOT approved dirt bike helmets, not all of them are though, check.

What kind of bicycle helmet should I buy?

best bike helmets under 50 image

jamie68117

I'm not really sure how much money my dad wants to spend on one. Probably no more than $50, but I'm not sure.

I tried on an adult helmet that we already had, (I'm guessing a men's one) but it was too big!

I think it'd be nice to get a helmet that has a little hole for a pony-tail, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't have one.

I live in Omaha, NE, so we have quite a few bike shops, as well as a bunch of sporting goods stores.

I know we don't want to buy one off the internet. Should I go to a bike or sporting goods store, or just go to target or wal-mart?

Is there really a big difference between $25 helmets and $50 helmets?

OH and if an adult helmet was too big, should I get a youth size? Or a women's size? Or what?

I don't want it to be super ugly either. I'm a 16 year old girl so if it looks really ugly I probably won't have any motivation to wear it.
OH and I ride about 6 miles on a paved trail each time I ride, and I go about 4-5 days a week.

Answer
Any helmet you like and fits will work. They are all tested and approved meeting govt. standards. At 16 you will need an adult helmet. Some models offer universal fit, 1 size fits all. I don't like those. Find a model you like with s,m,l sizing. An exact fit is achieved by using the extra pads that come with most helmets. You should be able to find quite a few under $50.

Do you need a drivers license to operate a motor bike on florida hyways 50cc & under?

visitfla2c

50cc & under.

Answer
No more than 50cc`s AND NO MORE THAN 30mph!!!

Mopeds/Scooters: If a motor vehicle is 50 cc or less, 2 brake horsepower or less, and can not exceed more than 30 mph on level ground, no helmet is required for the operator. The operator must be at least 16 years old and hold at least a regular operator driver license (Class E) or âMotorcycle Onlyâ license.) Passengers under 16 must wear a helmet.

3. Eye Protection: All persons who operate motorcycles (motorcycle = 51cc or more) must wear eye protection.

Most scooters can travel up to 40 MPH and exceed 2 bhp, so I would assume that the helmet requirements for motorcycles apply, but I am not a lawyer.

Is insurance required for motorcycles?

Insurance is not required to register motorcycles as with four-wheel motor vehicles (S. 627.733, F.S.). HOWEVER, if a motorcycle operator is charged in a crash with injuries, then the owner or owner/operator is financially responsible for bodily injuries and property damage to others. If no liability coverage was in effect, then bodily injury/property damage liability insurance must be purchased and kept for three years to avoid Financial Responsibility (license and tag/registration) suspension or to reinstate license, tag/registration after suspension. Chapter 324, F.S.

* Interstate highways cannot be used by human-powered vehicles or vehicles under 5 bhp (which means most 50cc scooters), and you must be able to maintain at least 40 MPH on an interstate to avoid a moving violation.

* If riding at less than the normal speed of traffic, you must ride as close to the right edge of the roadway or curb as possible except when making a left turn or the conditions do not allow you to do so; you are not allowed to use a bike or pedestrian lane. Otherwise you are bound to the same ârules of the roadâ as cars or full-size motorcycles.

* Persons under 16 may not operate a motorcycle or moped/scooter over 150cc or rent any motorcycle or moped.

* You cannot ride between traffic lanes (some states, i.e., California, allow this. Florida does not).

What kind of bicycle should I get for cycling around London?

bicycle helmets unnecessary on High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain, Lord Nicholas Addison Phillips ...
bicycle helmets unnecessary image

Woody Grey

I dont really wanna spend more than like £300..

some of the bikes Ive seen are like £2000 ?! wtf

Answer
It really depends on what sort of cycle you're most comfortable with, you should try out different ones to see what you like.
A mountain bike won't be suitable, the suspension is unnecessary, and the off road tyres will be too much effort to ride on roads.

Unless you want the dropped bars of a road bike, a hybrid will probably be the best, but there are different types to choose from.

An MTB based hybrid will be just a hard tail MTB frame, probably with 26 inch wheels fitted with slick tyres, and slightly higher gearing. These are good for use in traffic, and will take the knocks of day to day use very well. They will also be better if your rides include trails through parks or along canal tow paths, although most of those in London will be paved.

A performance hybrid is more likely to be based on a road bike, and just have flat bars. These have 700c wheels, and are noticeably faster than the MTB based cycles. In fact, around town they will be as fast as a road cycle, and you have the advantage of sitting more upright, giving you a better view when in traffic. These types of cycle are best if you only ride on roads or paved paths,

There will be hybrids that are between these two, and as I said earlier, it's up to you to decide which type you are most comfortable with.

£300 will get you an entry level cycle, it'll be fairly basic, but will have enough gears, and the components, such as wheels, brakes and gears, will be adequate.
Be aware of the fact that just increasing your budget by £100 to £150 will give you a better range to choose from, and you'll be looking at cycles with noticably better components, that will ride, brake and change gear better.

However, remember that you'll also need to budget for things like tool kit, spare tubes, lights, mudguards, and maybe a rack and panniers, not to mention a helmet, gloves, maybe some cycling shorts and some waterproof clothing.
Of course, once you have these, most can be used on another cycle should you decide to upgrade at some time.

Get along to your local cycle store, such as Evans, and see what they have to offer. Try as many cycles as you can for feel and fit, some shops might even let you take some for a test ride. You might even be able to get some sort of deal if you buy all the accessories and clothing at the same time.

See the attached link for the sort of cycles that you should be looking at.

I finally got an answer as to why I've seen so many liberals trying to sit inside their bicycle helmets when they ride.---
But it would seem unnecessary, in that, the seat would probably protect them from brain injury.
