I dont really wanna spend more than like £300..

It really depends on what sort of cycle you're most comfortable with, you should try out different ones to see what you like.
A mountain bike won't be suitable, the suspension is unnecessary, and the off road tyres will be too much effort to ride on roads.
Unless you want the dropped bars of a road bike, a hybrid will probably be the best, but there are different types to choose from.
An MTB based hybrid will be just a hard tail MTB frame, probably with 26 inch wheels fitted with slick tyres, and slightly higher gearing. These are good for use in traffic, and will take the knocks of day to day use very well. They will also be better if your rides include trails through parks or along canal tow paths, although most of those in London will be paved.
A performance hybrid is more likely to be based on a road bike, and just have flat bars. These have 700c wheels, and are noticeably faster than the MTB based cycles. In fact, around town they will be as fast as a road cycle, and you have the advantage of sitting more upright, giving you a better view when in traffic. These types of cycle are best if you only ride on roads or paved paths,
There will be hybrids that are between these two, and as I said earlier, it's up to you to decide which type you are most comfortable with.
£300 will get you an entry level cycle, it'll be fairly basic, but will have enough gears, and the components, such as wheels, brakes and gears, will be adequate.
Be aware of the fact that just increasing your budget by £100 to £150 will give you a better range to choose from, and you'll be looking at cycles with noticably better components, that will ride, brake and change gear better.
However, remember that you'll also need to budget for things like tool kit, spare tubes, lights, mudguards, and maybe a rack and panniers, not to mention a helmet, gloves, maybe some cycling shorts and some waterproof clothing.
Of course, once you have these, most can be used on another cycle should you decide to upgrade at some time.
Get along to your local cycle store, such as Evans, and see what they have to offer. Try as many cycles as you can for feel and fit, some shops might even let you take some for a test ride. You might even be able to get some sort of deal if you buy all the accessories and clothing at the same time.

I finally got an answer as to why I've seen so many liberals trying to sit inside their bicycle helmets when they ride.---
But it would seem unnecessary, in that, the seat would probably protect them from brain injury.
