Helmet safety is not a forgone conclusion after all or is it?

Recent evidence indicates that cyclists who wear helmets are 14 percent more likely to have a collision per mile cycled than those without, and are more likely to suffer neck injuries. Meanwhile, increases in helmet use have never been linked with lower cycle casualty rates".

Answer
The problem with "statistics" is - you can make them say anything you want. Fact: Most users of hard drugs started out on marijuana. Using that logic, you can also say that 99.9% of all alcoholics started off on MILK!

Helmets have saved my cookies both on a motorcycle & bicycle. I'll keep mine on - thank you.

Here's what Mark Twain had to say about statistics. Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

I really want a kawasaki bike, its my favorite type, but I heard honda is the better brand and is more reliable, is this true? What CC dirt bike would be good for me?Ive never ridden before and I'm growing. What gear would I need? What are good brands for the gear I need? Is thor a good helmet brand? About how much would all this cost me? Sorry for all the questions but I really would like to know the answers, thanks.

Answer
Kawasaki's are good bikes, I have owned dozens of them, matter of fact - I own one right now.

Honda's are extremely reliable - if you are talking about their road bikes or the older XL/XR series, yes that statement would be true.

Do you plan on just riding, racing or both?

If you plan on just riding a 150cc 4-stroke (or similar sized engine) would be good for you.
If you plan on racing, then you will need a 85cc 2-stroke.

All modern motocross bikes are about equal, you can do a search for the latest "shootout".

Gear: SNELL approved helmet, goggles, long sleeve shirt, long pants and riding boots are the minimum you will need. Gloves, padded riding jersey, shoulder pads with chest protector and armored riding pants are additional that are not required, but highly recommend.

If you can afford new gear, by all means buy it. If you cannot, you have several options.
Used bikes: Ebay, Craigslist, BikeFinds and CycleTrader.
Used gear: Ebay, Craigsllist, flea markets and yard sales.

Bare minimum you will need $500 for a used bike and used gear. I have purchased used bikes off of Ebay and Craigslist for under $500. I have purchased boots at garage sales for $25. If you look hard and long enough, you will find what you need at very reasonable prices. It might not be the latest, greatest and new, but it will get done what you need done. Example: new Alpinestar boots - $375. Yard sale Thor boots - $25. Brand new Honda CRF 100R - $2,800. 1998 Honda XR100 - $350 Craigslist.

The best helmets are Arai and Shoei, but you won't be able to afford them on your budget. Look at HJC. They have new SNELL approved helmets at under $150.

An improvement in bicycle helmet technology, lowering the probability a cyclist dies in any given accident?

bicycle helmets safety on Toddler Bike Helmet For Children Safety Event. Snell Certified.
bicycle helmets safety image

Ray D

An improvement in bicycle helmet technology, lowering the probability a cyclist dies in any given accident, will lower the total number of cycling deaths per year. True or false. Explain

Answer
If there is a 2 in 10 chance that with current helmet technology you will die and 10 people buy the helmet, then, 2 people can be expected to die.

After the introducton of the new technology there is a 1 in 10 chance the cyclist will die. Once this occurs a few things can happen.

If same number of people buy the helmet, then, 1 person can be expected to die and the answer is TRUE.

If, since helmets are safer 20 people buy them because the safety is worth the disconfort of wearing one. Since 1 in 10 will be killed, 2 in 20 will be killed and the total number of deaths will remain the same and the answer is FALSE.

If you increase to 30 people buying helmets you can see the total number of deaths will increase and the answer is FALSE.

This is not even taking into account that each cyclist may behave more unsafely because their helmet is safer increasing the number of accidents.

Back to the original question, all variables held constant AND the number of accidents held constant, the number of deaths will decrease BUT in reality it cannot be determined.

I hope this makes sense.

What is a reasonable price for a bike helmet?

John

I would like to know how much is too much on a all-mountain/single track bicycle helmet and how much is reasonable. Also, any recommendations, the main helmet that I was looking at was the Bontrager Lithos which is $129 and I was wondering if this is a bit outlandish for a helmet or if that is what's necessary for a quality helmet?

Answer
In the U.S. every helmet regardless of price is tested to the same minimum standards. As the helmet gets more expensive the helmet gets better, lighter, and stronger.

$129 is a LOT cheaper than brain surgery or even a trip to the hospital from your helmet shattering on the pavement.

EDIT: OK, I guess I'll have to go into a little more detail. As I said before, all helmets must meet minimum requirements. The differences with better helmets, however, are staggering. First, cheaper helmets (asm entioned before) are good for ONE impact. That does not take into consideration that almost every accident involves more than one impact as you bounce off the road. That is part of the CPSC regulation.

Good helmets have internal webbing to allow the helmet to stay together as your head bounces off the road as cheaper ones come off your head. Cheap helmets break apart and fall away leaving your head exposed after the first hit.

Good helmets fit the head much more securely without using low durometer pads stuck to the inside, again making the safety fetaures of the helmet much more effective. Most decent helmets also have less abrasive straps and pinch-free buckles along with a much more effective and slip-free situation.

Good helmets also have a positive placing system of some sort to passively place the helmet in the correct position on your head. Again, VERY important feature.

Soooo, if all you want is minimum protection- if you don't particularly need your head for anything special- than a $25 helmet is great. On the other hand, if you tend to use your head (or anything that might be stored inside it) occasionally, that $129 is pretty cheap insurance.

The only reason I don't like riding a bicycle is because of the stupid gears, I can never get them right and it makes it too complicated.

Anyone else not like riding a bicycle?

Answer
bike riding is pretty my life ,but i hate wearing a helmet since I almost never fall off and it makes me look ridiculous . The gears are pretty simple eg. if you have a a 24 speed bike then you might have 3
main gears and 8 rear gears and that is why it's 24 speed. But i see why you see it complicated otherwise. The only thing i hate about mountain biking is the abuse you can cop for it you should try BBMX though if you have a problem with the gears, I reckon you'll like it

At what age (if any) is it legal for a person in Canada, Ontario to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

John

Answer
Why would anyone want to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

Look, I travelled 10,000 miles in Europe without a helmet during the 1980s when no one wore helmets. In the 1990s my wife persuaded me to wear one and I grudgingly agreed to do so. Now I don't go out on my bike without my helmet. It takes a second to put it on and it potentially saves my life if I'm ever in an accident. In the '80s I was stupid. Now I know better. Wear a helmet - it can save your life.

Do you ride in full leather and gear?

When you ride you motorcycle do you ride in full gear? Im talking one piece race suit with back protector, knee pucks for putting your knee down(if you do) racing boots, gloves, etc. Do you do it on a commute to work? Why or why not. What kind of bike? Why do people talk crap when you don't do it on sport bike but when people ride a cruiser its fine to wear a half shield helmet and Denim vest? My bike is my main source of transportation. Its a super-sport but i wear a full face helmet, leather jacket, jeans, and boots. i also carry a backpack. What do you wear???????

Answer
I see a lot of people in full racing leathers--knee pucks, matching boots and gloves, sometimes even matching graphics on the helmet. I think they look a little silly for street riding, in fact it makes them look 'dangerous' to me, like they're taking chances they shouldn't take. Full leather suits are for the track, not the street.

I wear a full-face helmet because studies have shown (and you might have expected all along) that about half the impacts come from the front, so wearing a half helmet is like locking two doors in a four-door car. I wear gloves with leather palms because when you fall off, even at low speeds, you instinctively put your hands out (learned that one the hard way). And I have a leather jacket for when it's cold and a mesh jacket for the Summer. Actually I have two pairs of gloves, cold and warm.

I probably should have some kind of abrasion-resistant pants, like Draggin' Jeans or something like that, but I never have. Boots would be good too, for long rides anyway, but I never bothered with those either. I do wear leather shoes (I usually run around in just Crocs).

And my sweetie followed me home once at night on my vintage BMW and said she had a hard time seeing my tail light. So I bought a reflective vest. I wear it on the bicycle at night too.

I like long rides, like 200-300 miles in a day. I carry my whole 'wardrobe'--Leather and mesh jacket, a sweater for under the leather jacket, cold and warm gloves, reflective vest. So I'm ready for anything. 8^)

Im interested in cycling?

Ichigo

Since I was small I have seen cyclers pass by my neighborhood everyday, I would watch them from the porch as they passed by. I liked how it just looked, Im 16 now and I have always wanted a nice road bike to start training. Unfortunately I have no idea how to start. Back then I didn't have money for the bike, but now I do cause I have a job. Im interested in Road races. First of all how do I find the "Right" bike, I have researched but I just want to see how YOU found your bike. What other equipment is needed(excluding helmet ,water bottle >.>) Is a coach a necessity ? I will be interested in getting in college team also, so im taking it seriously.

Answer
Hey Ichigo,
You've gotten some pretty good answers so far. My two cents? Take a trip to the local bike shop(s), that would be brick and mortar establishments that sell ONLY bicycles, and test ride a few. It's likely there will be people on staff that have some experience with road racing and maybe even organized rides you can participate in. In addition to the helmet and water bottles take along a cell phone and tire repair tools.

I would pick a shop that takes you seriously and treats you well over a shop that has little to offer besides a snobbish attitude that just wants to sell you a bike-shaped object.

As far as bikes go? There will be differences in weight and components as you get into the more expen$ive bikes but you can still get a decent one for under$1000 USD. If you think you can get away with spending under $300 and still get a decent road bike? Fugitaboutit!
Decent, useable bikes in that price range just do not exist so get that notion outta yer head right now.

As to how to start? Get on the bike and RIDE! May sound overly simplistic but that's where all cyclists begin, by riding. Riding with a group can give you experience and challenge you, you also get to see how others ride and what they ride. Might surprise you when you get to see just who's the fastest and what they're riding, youth and gear isn't everything when it comes down to it. I've seen some older guys riding vintage steel that just flat pull away from the younger pups on their light weight carbon bikes.

Need help finding first motorcycle gear?

I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle (Ninja 250r) and need to know what gear I should be looking at. I was thinking a helmet, gloves, and a jacket? Will I be okay just wearing jeans and tennis shoes? What brands should I look at?

Answer
You need at least a helmet, jacket and gloves. All should be motorcycle-specific.

The helmet should be comfortable and a good fit. ALL helmets do about the same job of protection, you pay more for comfort and features. Also, since about half of helmet impacts come from the front, a full-face helmet provides a lot more protection.

The jacket is partly to keep you warm in the wind but also for abrasion resistance if you fall. Leather used to be considered best, but now there are textiles with the same abrasion resistance. For warmer weather you can get a 'mesh' jacket that protects like leather, but the wind goes right through it! I have one and I love it. You can zip a liner inside it when it gets cold, and you can put a sweater under that and be really warm.

Don't underestimate the importance of gloves. If you fall, you instinctively put your hands out, so you want gloves with leather palms.

If you're really going to get serious about riding, it might be nice to have pants too, and boots. But I don't think they're completely necessary. Tennis shoes are not a good idea, though, you want at least leather shoes. Some kind of boots that cover your ankles would be better.

Jeans are fine. You can get pants made just for motorcycles that have more abrasion resistance. One kind is called Draggin' Jeans, they look just like regular jeans but have a layer of kevlar in them. There are also some nice pants made for Highway Patrol officers that look like slacks but have iron in them or something.

When you're first starting out, the accidents you're most likely to have are low-speed accidents. You lose control of the bike in a parking lot and it falls over. Or you're going around a curve at 20 mph and you hit some gravel or something and the bike slides out from under you. It's very much like falling from a bicycle. So you really only want to protect yourself from getting banged up and scratched up.

There's a website I always go to first when looking for M/C gear. It's newenough.com. They have last year's models, overstocks, discontinued stuff, very good prices. And they're very good about taking it back if you don't like it.

But for a helmet you really should go to a store and try them on. Different brands are shaped for different-shaped heads, and the wrong shape can be really uncomfortable. Plus I find that in some brands I take a L and in some I need an XL.

Cheap Motorcycle equipment in Japan's Kanto area?

Stardog Ch

I'm looking to buy a helmet, boots, and gloves to go with my new bike. I actually take rather large sizes too: about an XL helmet and size 10-11 (28-30 cm) boots. I live in south Ibaraki prefecture, and I can easily get around both in my car and on the train. Can anyone suggest a shop that sells good motorcycle equipment without it costing half the price of my bike?

Answer
the area to the east (and slightly north) of Ueno Station in Tokyo specializes in such material, but you could match the prices with a motorcycle goods store in your city. ask at your local koban for directions.

I just bought a Ninja Zx-7r... if that makes a difference to you. =]

Answer
The safest helmet to get that matches all bikes is colored white.
It is proven a rider with a white helmet is more noticeable than riders with other colored helmets.

Since most girls are concerned about damage to the face in an accident, most wear a full face helmet. Now this is my observation, so research this.

My wife wears her full face modular helmet when we are the road and her half helmet around town. She has a Suzuki S50 that is a fantastic bike for in town and on the road. I have a Suzuki C90T and a Honda Gold Wing.

We have various brands and the only one that gave us trouble was my Fulmer helmet.
We have Vega, AFX HJC, Nolan and KBC. Again, the only bad one was the Fulmer I finally threw away.
I personally think Nolan is good, but overpriced and that's the case with most of you high dollar helmets. You pay a lot more in price for just a little bit more in quality. . .

It more important you get one that fits and is not to heavy on you if you go on long rides. It needs to be DOT and or ECE approved, but if you can find one affordable, a Snell approved helmet is the one to get. Our KBC helmets are Snell approved. Hope this helps. . .

Edit: I do have sources showing white helmets are safer. At least I can back myself. . .

I feel like I am limited on what I can do with him. Or maybe I just need some new and fresh ideas. I feel like I am trapped in my house.

Answer
Great ideas by all the posters here!

We also have just taken our son everywhere with us since he was a few weeks old. We go boating, hiking, shopping, to the park, to the zoo, to a nearby farm, to the beach, to museums, swimming, to festivals and fairs and concerts in the park (he loves music). DH put a baby seat on the bike, we got him a safety helmet and off they go for a nice bike ride! He and I put on our suits and play in the sprinkler or with the spray attachment on the hose in the yard. I put him in his stroller when he was younger, and in his wagon now, and we explore the neighborhood and look at birds, animals, and flowers.

You're not limited at all, pick something you think might be fun and go for it. Since everything is new to a baby, they really enjoy the various experiences.

Have fun!

Baby in a bike seat- what's the youngest age?

Mrs. Kelly

I want to get a bike seat for my baby so she can ride with me. What is the minimum age she can be to ride/wear a helmet? Anyone know?

Answer
Obviously a child can't be on a bike until they can safely wear a helmet.

http://www.helmets.org/little1s.htm
Nobody we have met in the injury prevention field recommends taking an infant of less than 12 months in a bicycle child seat, trailer, sidecar or any other carrier. Nobody. And we do not either.
New York state law prohibits it. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission thinks it is dangerous to take a child under one year on a bicycle, and here is their rationale:

Maurice Keenan, MD, from the American Academy of Pediatrics [21], requested that a minimum age of 1 year be reflected on the label for helmets intended for children under age 5. This would better convey the message that infants (children under age 1) should not be passengers on a bicycle under any circumstance.

The Commission agrees with the commenter that children under 1 year of age should not be on bicycles. Children are just learning to sit unsupported at about 9 months of age. Until this age, infants have not developed sufficient bone mass and muscle tone to enable them to sit unsupported with their backs straight. Pediatricians advise against having infants sitting in a slumped or curled position for prolonged periods. This position may even be exacerbated by the added weight of a bicycle helmet on the infantâs head. Because pediatricians recommend against having children under age 1 as passengers on bicycles, the Commission does not want the certification label to imply that children under age 1 can ride safely.

Source: 16 CFR Part 1203 Safety Standard for Bicycle Helmets; Final Rule, page 11726

That explains why you will not find a child helmet on the market sized for a tiny tot. You certainly do not want to ride with a bare-headed child, and in some places it is illegal. In fact, several states have laws against taking children under one year of age on a bicycle, even with a helmet.

Parents love their babies and love their bicycles, so it is natural to want to put the two together. That thought occurs to every bicycling parent, generally before the child is born. We see messages on the Internet indicating that some parents do put their children in baby seats of one design or another and take them along on trailers starting as young as five weeks. Others use a baby backpack. At slightly older ages, people use front or rear-mounted child seats. A few (mostly in the UK) use sidecars. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. A disclaimer: our purpose here is to cover the risks, so you know what you are getting into. We are hearing more these days about undiagnosed brain injuries, with symptoms too subtle for doctors to detect, but very real to families. And that comes to mind whenever someone asks us about babies and biking. We worry about your six-week-old entering the first grade six years from now with a small but detectable mental handicap. That is alarmist; this is an alarmist page.

http://www.ibike.org/education/infant.htm
Infants: Child Seats Vs. Trailers Vs. Backpacks Vs. Third-wheel Cycles

The primary determinant of when an infant can join his or her parents on bike rides is the strength of the the child's neck. Because of the jostling and the additional weight of a helmet (8-10 oz.), this is a few months after a baby can first hold their head up. Note: Some jurisdictions have laws requiring passengers on bicycles to be at least one year old.

Usually by age 12 months parents can start checking with the child's physician to see if they have the neck development to safely go for a bike ride. Most toddlers' neck and shoulder muscles can tolerate the weight of a helmet and absorb shock from bumps in the road at 1 years old.

We know of no comprehensive study on the best method to carry an infant on a bike and there are risks associated with all of them.. Here are some factors to consider:

What age can I stop wearing a helmet when I bike? (Toronto)?

Anonymous

What is the minimum age in Toronto (Canada, Ontario), that I can ride my bicycle without wearing a helmet?

Answer
Depends on how old you are when you grow an adamantium layer of skin over your scalp...

You can legally ride without a helmet at 18, but it is *always* stupid to do so. Wearing a helmet, and wearing it properly, makes cycling immensely safer. In Toronto in particular, it's not that safe of a thing to do, but if you fall and hit your head, a helmet is the difference between having to spend $30 to replace your helmet, and having urban foxes make a meal of your brain matter.

It happens. All the freaking time. That's why whenever you see a cycling club ride past you, you can safely bet that they'll *all* be wearing helmets. Smart adults wear helmets even though they don't have to. And these days helmets can be pretty stylish, and there are always ways of dealing with helmet-head. So just get used to it, because if there's anything worth protecting in your head, you will *always* wear a helmet when you cycle.

And I do care about safety and stuff,

but why do helmets just look so darn uncool when riding around the neighborhood?

Answer
You know what like gets to me? Like when someone starts a sentence with "like". Like hey man...if you think 15 miles is a "big ride" - like you've got a lot to learn about cycling & the distances a good cyclist can cover.

Like in my neighborhood - it looks dorky for anyone not to be wearing one. Like a full forty-five percent of all cycling accidents are "solo falls" - no one else involved. Like, only 18% involve a motor vehicle, 17% involve another bicycle. Even 4% involve running into a parked car!

Like...get it now man?

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

Chris, I don't mean murder or anything. I mean just some stupid teenage thing that they would arrest you at that moment but wouldn't bother pursuing you.

Answer
Every once in a while you have to get lucky. But it's getting harder and harder everyday.

There have been several times that I've gotten back to my house before the cops could get there and then it was just a matter of not answering the door, pretending not to be home, and so on. But the ONE time that was really cool, in my opinion, was when this "goody-two-shoes" woman in a Lexus thought that I was driving too fast, 70 in a 65. So she got behind me and started flashing her lights and stuff. Which made me speed up to get out of her way but when I pulled to the right lane to let her by she dropped in behind me and kept it up. I looked WAY back in the rear view and saw a tiny red light in the distance behind me. So I punched it and took the next exit. It was a tight twisty road that I had driven on all my life and used to race on it in my younger years so I was pretty much at home. I was doing well at staying ahead but she was doing better than expected so I realized that I was going to have to "lose her" one way or another. So as I skidded around the next turn I saw a driveway to the right. I jammed on the brakes and went up the driveway and looked for a place to duck in where I wouldn't be seen from the road. She raced by so I dropped back to the road and went in the opposite direction at a normal, legal speed, in case the cops were backing her up. I saw no one so I took a turn that took me in a totally different direction than what I was when she first started chasing me and I ended up in another town and I took a side road home and stayed away from the freeway. I had no further problems and never heard about it again. That time I was in a car.

The times when I was on my motorcycle I would go up the same street that was a dead end, whenever I picked up a tail.
There was this ONE driveway that had a path that went thru a hedge and if you angled to the LEFT as you passed thru the hedge you would come out on a side street that was just behind my house. (If you went just to the right you would hit a 4x4 post ... not good). From there I would race to the house and open the gate and put the bike in the yard, out of sight. After a while the cops got smart and they stopped following me up the dead end street but would take the road that wrapped around to my house and try to get there before me, but they were always late. But they did get really close a couple of times. I barely got the gate closed when I heard the skid marks out front. My mom would ask what all the noise was about and I told her that some friends were trying to beat me to the house but I won. Fortunately she never looked outside to see who was there. Whew! And the cops were good sports about it and never made a big deal of it, which they could have if they wanted. It got to be a game but I eventually stopped doing it so that they would not have to go to the "next level".

I also took an off ramp once and hid out under an overpass. When the cops went by with lights and sirens on the freeway, I pulled back out and went the opposite direction.

And one time on my motorcycle I ducked into a side street and removed my jacket and put my helmet on the back of the seat (no helmet law back then) and rode home in the cold. The cop was running lights and siren and passed me going the opposite way but never recognized me because my shirt was a different color than my jacket and I had no helmet like I did before. (I got lucky).

But, to keep the police happy, I MUST state that nowadays you should NEVER do this. Just pull over and take your lumps and tell the truth. I have had the police let me go just because I told them the truth.

Fortunately I NOW live in an area where everyone drives 90 - 100 mph on the freeway and the cops really don't care. In town the speed limits are usually around 50 - 60 on most major streets and everyone drives at 70 - 80. The police are cool about it because everyone's doing it and the police have a lot of stuff to do and don't have time to worry about trying to get everyone to slow down. Amazingly we have very few accidents caused by speeding, and those are usually the snowbirds and out-of-towners who can't handle the fast pace. When I first moved here I was amazed that everyone was "racing around" b/c the average age here is 77, believe it or not.

Should i be intimidated to ride a Harley?

Wyatt

Im 17 and really wanna get a motorcycle in the next few years. I didn't grow up with a dad so i missed out on a lot of the "man" stuff like motorcycles and cars. I have never rode a motorcycle in my life and i know nothing about them and am totally spooked about riding the first time. Is it tough? What do i need to know before trying? should i take a first time rider course? Thanks!

Answer
I read somewhere, a few years ago, that more than half of all buyers of new Harleys were either total newbies or else coming back to riding after 20-30 years (raising a family no doubt). And at the time I wondered why total noobs would want such a dauntingly big, heavy bike.

Well then a friend of mine (a woman who rides) wanted to buy one, and she began asking me questions about them. I've been riding a long time but I had never ridden a Harley. So I suggested we rent one for a day and split the cost, and take turns switching between the Harley and her bike. I have to say I was just shocked at how easy the Harley was to ride, how easy to manage and 'well mannered' it was. This was a Heritage Softail, maybe the biggest bike Harley's ever made, a 700 lb beast.

Harleys are 'cruisers'. Cruisers have a lower center of gravity, and a lower seat, so they feel much lighter than they are. Now ALL motorcycles feel pretty light once you get up to about 10 mph. On the road, weight means stability. But big bikes are a little scary when you're holding them up at a stoplight, or parking them on a slight hill. The Harley was even easy to hold up and park.

Ten minutes on this bike taught me all about cruisers. They are not good-handling, high-performance, they are stable and easy to ride. They support a relaxed, laid-back riding style, which is a lot safer than 'pushing the envelope' on a crazy sportbike. They are comfortable and relaxing to ride. The Softail would make a great touring bike, at 85 mph it's like sitting in a flying easy chair and watching the scenery go by. And I say that not exactly being a Harley fan, or a cruiser fan.

BUT I would seriously not recommend you get one to learn to ride on. You're likely to be hard on your first bike. You will almost certainly drop it once or twice (at least), nothing serious, just losing your balance in a parking lot, stuff like that. And you will almost certainly abuse the clutch. Even a halfway decent USED Harley is like $10k.

I would recommend you start on a Japanese cruiser, a used one. Honda Shadow, Kawasaki Vulcan, Yamaha Star, Suzuki C50 or Boulevard. Something between 5 and10 years old, old enough to be depreciated but new enough that you can still get parts. Maybe with a few dings and bruises already so you won't feel so bad when you drop it. 750cc is a good size to start with for a cruiser, it feels light, its easy to park, but it will still cruise on the freeway all day without the wind blowing it around. Maybe $3000. If you buy carefully, you can sell this 'old beater' a year later for about what you paid for it. And -then- if you want a Harley go get one, and it will be the same but bigger and nicer.

You don't need professional training to ride a motorcycle. You learn by yourself, by riding. The MSF course (Motorcycle Safety Foundation, in the US, in other English-speaking countries they have something similar) only teaches you some very important safety habits to keep you safe while you learn on your own. It's probably a good idea. They supply the bike, you just show up, so a lot of people do it who are just considering getting a bike and want to see what it's like and if they can even do it.

If you've never ridden a bicycle, i would start on a bicycle, just to learn about balancing and steering. If you can drive a manual-shift car, learning a motorcycle will be easier because you understand how a clutch and gearshift work. But the controls are different, you clutch with your hand and shift with your foot, so you need to develop new 'muscle memories'.

Also leave room in your budget for a helmet, jacket, and gloves, at a minimum. The gloves and jacket are about abrasion resistance when you skid on the ground.

If you know anyone who rides, pepper him with questions. Bikers love to talk (and write) about motorcycling. It really is just as much fun as it looks. 8^)

Answer
Proper procedure would be to file a police report. Then you can take the report back to the driver's insurance company and you can get reimbursed. If you were on the road, you should have had the right of way. If you were on the sidewalk, right of way isn't so clear, (bicycles are not pedestrians on wheels, they are vehicles that are sometimes defacto allowed on sidewalks,) but you 'probably' still have it.

After the fact, the driver can deny it happened. Unless you claim some sort of minor injury, in which case the driver can be encouraged to pay up by the threat of prosecution for hit-and-run. Your best first step would be to find out the driver's insurance company and go to them with a quote for a replacement bike. (Take a receipt if you can.) Be ready to answer if you were injured or not; and if not, then don't expect much from them. At best you'll get a depreciated value for your bike, not a new bike.

Why are so many bikers dumb not use lights and not pay attention to cars?

Answer
Cyclist or bicyclists - not "bikers". Bikers ride a Harley & have tattoos. All it takes is one bad cyclist to give everyone a bad name. Conversely - the same can be said for motorists.

Thanks to a helmet mounted mirror (http://safezonemirror.com/ ) I avoided just such a situation this morning. A lady came flying up my left side - with a turn signal on thank God - and made a right turn DEAD in front of me. I knew it was coming - I could read it in her face. "I'm gonna pass this guy & make a right." It's called the "right hook". She may not have even noticed me - or thought I could go so fast - doing about 20-21 mph at the time.

Why do motorists talk & text on cell phones, apply make-up, drink beer or other alcoholic drinks, smoke dope & do God knows what else behind the wheel? 3,000 lb. car vs. 25 lb. bicycle. No contest. Another time I barely avoided a T-Bone crash because some fool ran a red light in a car. And the intersection was CLEARLY marked "Red Light Cameras in Use".

John 8:7 "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." http://www.gospel.com/bookmarks/Cast-first-stone-Bible-John-8-7/9383

There are FAR more fatal car wrecks per year than bicycle accidents/wrecks -even on a proportionate level. Only 17% of bicycle accidents involve another vehicle. 45% are "solo falls'.

18 years driving a tractor-trailer with no tickets, no wrecks & never placed "out of service" by a weigh scale or roadside D.O.T. inspection. Now retired. So what gives you the idea I'm gonna start screwing up now? I STOP at stoplights - even at 5 a.m. I at least slow down to a crawl at stop signs. Don't lump us all together. There's far more BAD motorists than cyclists.

Edit: Remember what I wrote about motorists NOT paying attention? This just in...
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2398418/British-tourist-23-leg-severed-New-York-yellow-cab-swerves-avoid-cyclist-Rockefeller-Center.html
Quote from the article, "Authorities have not said what caused the driver to jump the curb, but the cyclist told DNAinfo that the driver tried to make a left as the cyclist was passing him.

'I told him, "Stop",' he said. 'He gets angry. He honked his horn and accelerates.'

So this dumb s*** cab driver tries to "get even" with a cyclist passing him, jumps a curb & severed a tourist's LEG.

Melissa

I didn't get initiated..I was friends with upper class-man.

Answer
All the freshmen at my high school were given really horrible looking hats they had to wear everyday for a week at school. Each freshmen had a senior sister (I went to an all girls high school). Thank GOD my Senior sister was nice. She made me probably the best looking hat of all of them. One girl had to wear a bicycle helmet with burnt popcorn glued all over the top LOL!! IT WAS HILARIOUS. That helmet stunk though haha.

Do you think i have a chance against lance armstrong in a bicycle race?

Q. I've been wearing my helmet for the past 2 weeks i think im ready

Answer
Yeh man you as if you are in the 'groove' with the wearing helmet thing.

i dont need a helmet camera
i dont need a helmet camera

Answer
I started with a Jones Cam and a Sony DCRTRV350 camcorder. The camera worked great and has optional lenses and filters. I have since moved to a Drift X170 which is all digital, I love it. I have seen guys using the GoPro, don't care for it to much because of the way it mounts. I am looking to sell the JonesCam and Sony as a unit for somewhere around $200.00. I am sold on the Drift because of it's size, mounting ability, recording options and wireless remote control.

So I post this and apparantly while I was writing it you post that you don't need a helmet cam??? What are you looking for?

How can I keep cool under a bike helmet?

xxdismantl

I always make sure to wear a helmet. The only thing is, I ride to work every day and by the time I get there, my head is all sweaty, my bangs are wet, and my hair is destroyed. (The fact that it is typically over 80 degrees doesn't help either). Normally this wouldn't matter to me, but I have to look presentable for the customers where I work. Any tips on keeping your head cool and your hair intact?

Answer
Buy a better helmet - one with better ventilation!

Do I need the visor on my mountain bike helmet?

The Curmud

I want to attach my GoPro camera onto my helmet but the visor is in the way. Is there a safety reason for the visor or can I remove it?

Answer
Visors are on MTB helmets to A) Keep the sun out of your eyes. And B) Keep low hanging tree limbs & branches out of your face. You decide.
