Do you ride in full leather and gear?

Jay

When you ride you motorcycle do you ride in full gear? Im talking one piece race suit with back protector, knee pucks for putting your knee down(if you do) racing boots, gloves, etc. Do you do it on a commute to work? Why or why not. What kind of bike? Why do people talk crap when you don't do it on sport bike but when people ride a cruiser its fine to wear a half shield helmet and Denim vest? My bike is my main source of transportation. Its a super-sport but i wear a full face helmet, leather jacket, jeans, and boots. i also carry a backpack. What do you wear???????

Answer
I see a lot of people in full racing leathers--knee pucks, matching boots and gloves, sometimes even matching graphics on the helmet. I think they look a little silly for street riding, in fact it makes them look 'dangerous' to me, like they're taking chances they shouldn't take. Full leather suits are for the track, not the street.

I wear a full-face helmet because studies have shown (and you might have expected all along) that about half the impacts come from the front, so wearing a half helmet is like locking two doors in a four-door car. I wear gloves with leather palms because when you fall off, even at low speeds, you instinctively put your hands out (learned that one the hard way). And I have a leather jacket for when it's cold and a mesh jacket for the Summer. Actually I have two pairs of gloves, cold and warm.

I probably should have some kind of abrasion-resistant pants, like Draggin' Jeans or something like that, but I never have. Boots would be good too, for long rides anyway, but I never bothered with those either. I do wear leather shoes (I usually run around in just Crocs).

And my sweetie followed me home once at night on my vintage BMW and said she had a hard time seeing my tail light. So I bought a reflective vest. I wear it on the bicycle at night too.

I like long rides, like 200-300 miles in a day. I carry my whole 'wardrobe'--Leather and mesh jacket, a sweater for under the leather jacket, cold and warm gloves, reflective vest. So I'm ready for anything. 8^)

Does anyone feel that the USA has no right putting missiles in Germany?

emily Rose

Isn't this what the NATO and the United Nations are responsible for? Are you tired of the USA always sticking their nose into things that should be dealt with by already in place by the United Nations. Do you think Bush again jumped into putting the American people second. And not even considering the ramification it may mean how the world looks at us. Isn't this how we ended in Iraq, Bush satisfying a vendetta Saddam had out on Bush Sr. life. And lied about WMD's to try to make his case, even before the United Nations had a chance to work.

Answer
I think it's up to the Germans really. As a random musing, I read somewhere that the Israelis thought that Patriot Missiles ( of 1991 Gulf War vintage) did not actually work (ie intercept incoming missiles) , which could somewhat defeat the object of the whole exercise, really, unless they have improved since then.

A part of me always regards a lot of these weapons as scams against the taxpayer, really, especially the really expensive ones. You know, the ones that someone aims at you from 2,000,000,000 kilometres squared away from you, then it arrives, knocks on your front door, goes upstairs and looks for you under hiding under the bed. The ones that cost £34455503283-59p to blow up someone driving to work in Iraq.

A lot of these systems are a bit like building pyramids, except the Egyptians did not demolish the pyramids after thirty years and then bill the taxpayer for another lot.

I do wonder, and I am not an expert, what use are nuclear weapons and hi-tech weaponry in general, against people who use bicycles and Datsun pickup trucks, communicate by passing notes to each other? and use automatic rifles and suicide belts? I would have thought you would have needed more old-fashioned infantry with big boots and helmets, the sort of people who donât want to join the Army in the UK as the salaries are so poor, perhaps as much of the money has gone on pyramid-like nuclear weapons that will be dismantled, God willing, in thirty years time.

What kind of bicycle would best fit my lifestyle?

mipy

I am looking to buy a bike, preferably a BMX although I do not do tricks, but I would like to cruise around the city with my pals. I don't really want to spend over $120, but I do want some quality. Haro? Redline? Mongoose? Also, does spray painting the frame of a bike totally mess it up? Thanks everyone! :)

Answer
BMX bikes are TERRIBLE for actually going anywhere. They're only good for tricks. Why are they terrible? They're completely designed for tricks, with a saddle that doesn't get in the way during tricks (not fit for riding comfortably), bars that come high for more controls during spins (you'll be stuck upright in the wind, good luck getting over 15mph or so), etc. You'll be standing up to pedal the whole way (uncomfortable for extended periods) and it'll just be a generally unpleasant experience. If you end up sitting on the saddle, you'll be one of those funny guys I see commuting with their knees hitting their chin on the upstroke of the pedal stroke, hah.

if you simply want to trot along at a casual pace with friends, get a cheap beach cruiser, which might be the only thing you can afford with $120.

If you actually want to *go* places, and go places quickly, you want a road bike. Vintage road bikes can be had for cheap, within your budget, but you'll be put over your budget with accessories (helmet: 20, lock: 20, lights for night riding: 20, random parts you'll need for old bike repair: 20ish). Plus you need to know what you're doing when you're shopping for used bikes.

I pass BMX/cruiser guys all the time on my 1987 Japanese road bike I picked up for $100 on craigslist, in need of about $30 worth of repair. Sometimes, I see those I pass start sprinting in some manly, testosterone-driven spur of the moment competition, but there's no way they ever catch up to me on my road bike with thin, high pressure, slick tires (less rolling resistance).

Also, you said you want 'quality.' There's no way in hell you're getting that with $120 worth of department store bike. Either spend a few weeks learning about bikes, and then buying a used one that'll suit you, get a friend to help you find a used one to suit you, or go to your local bicycle shop (LBS) and tell them your requirements. Your LBS is going to be your best friend if you go in with enough money.

Buying a moped and getting a licence in Georgia?

PlayAtlant

I've tried looking online, but my scenario is somewhat unique. I am a foreigner (from England) who had a Tennessee drivers license while I was studying in school there. I am now looking to move to Georgia to get a masters degree. My TN license has expired while I was out of the country, and I intend to get a moped rather than a car. My questions:
1) Do I need to retake the tests as my license has expired? It expired in June '07.
2) Do I need to take a different test to drive a moped, or can I drive one on a regular license?
3) Am I correct in thinking I don't need tags or insurance for a moped under 50cc???

I think that's all. Thanks.

Answer
1) As a SCOOTER owner (2003 Piaggio BV200) it bothers me when people refer to a scooter as a "moped." The word moped is actually short for motor-pedal which are motorized bicycles with pedals. If you can't pedal it, it is a scooter or a motorcycle. Scooters are also sometimes called "Step-thru Motorcycles" referring to the ability to step through the space where your legs are while riding.

2) If your license has expired, you will just have to renew it, not take any tests unless it has been over a year in most states so hurry.

3)In most states, any motorcycle with a 49cc or smaller engine is grouped with motorized bicycles and can be used like a bicycle (sidewalks, bike lanes, park at bike-racks basically just like bicycle). Any motorcycle with an engine larger than 49cc's is considered an actual motorcycle regardless of its physical design or riding mount type and you will need either a motorcycle endorsement on your regular driver's license or a separate motorcycle license depending on how Georgia does it (for this you must take a motorcycle driving and written test w/ the DMV).

4)Insurance and registration (tags) is not required for motorized bicycles (49cc's or less) but insurance would probably be a good idea anyway. For motorcycles with over 49cc engines, you must have minimal state-required insurance, a motorcycle license or endorsement, and registration (tags).

5) Bicycles (motorized or not) are required by law to observe the same rules of the road as cars, and many cyclists choose to ride in traffic which is perfectly legal. Just keep in mind that most un-modified 49cc scooters will probably top out at around 30-35 MPH, so if traffic is stacking up on you, just pull to the right into the bike lane or something and allow them to pass just as a cyclist would. There are plenty of modified old vintage Vespa and Lambretta scooters with 49cc engines that can easily exceed 50mph. There are also several newer 49cc scooters on the market today that are somewhat intended for racing and will be much faster than 35 MPH from the factory, so choose the right scoot for your needs and remember to always wear eye protection and preferably a helmet!

Hope that helps!

Im interested in cycling?

Ichigo

Since I was small I have seen cyclers pass by my neighborhood everyday, I would watch them from the porch as they passed by. I liked how it just looked, Im 16 now and I have always wanted a nice road bike to start training. Unfortunately I have no idea how to start. Back then I didn't have money for the bike, but now I do cause I have a job. Im interested in Road races. First of all how do I find the "Right" bike, I have researched but I just want to see how YOU found your bike. What other equipment is needed(excluding helmet ,water bottle >.>) Is a coach a necessity ? I will be interested in getting in college team also, so im taking it seriously.

Answer
Hey Ichigo,
You've gotten some pretty good answers so far. My two cents? Take a trip to the local bike shop(s), that would be brick and mortar establishments that sell ONLY bicycles, and test ride a few. It's likely there will be people on staff that have some experience with road racing and maybe even organized rides you can participate in. In addition to the helmet and water bottles take along a cell phone and tire repair tools.

I would pick a shop that takes you seriously and treats you well over a shop that has little to offer besides a snobbish attitude that just wants to sell you a bike-shaped object.

As far as bikes go? There will be differences in weight and components as you get into the more expen$ive bikes but you can still get a decent one for under$1000 USD. If you think you can get away with spending under $300 and still get a decent road bike? Fugitaboutit!
Decent, useable bikes in that price range just do not exist so get that notion outta yer head right now.

As to how to start? Get on the bike and RIDE! May sound overly simplistic but that's where all cyclists begin, by riding. Riding with a group can give you experience and challenge you, you also get to see how others ride and what they ride. Might surprise you when you get to see just who's the fastest and what they're riding, youth and gear isn't everything when it comes down to it. I've seen some older guys riding vintage steel that just flat pull away from the younger pups on their light weight carbon bikes.

Hi!
I'm a 14 year old girl, and i just got a new bicycle. It's kind of a vintage one, and i got the blue model. Here's a picture of it: http://www.trekbikes.com/ca/en/bikes/town/recreation/pure/pure_lowstep
Anyways, I was just wondering how i could look good with a helmet... Because my parents are forcing me to wear one....
I just dont think they look fashionnable and they are soooo not cute. Plus, I dont think people with vintage bikes do wear helmets!
But as the rule says, safety first!!
How would you recommend wearing it? And which one would you recommend? That looks good?
Thank You so much for your time. :)
Oh and by the way, I have long brown curly hair, if that helps :)

Answer
Get a helmet the same color as your bike. Then it looks like a coordinated ensemble.

Where could I get bicycle helmets which aren't ugly?

Cybele

I am considering buying a bike to get around town. The one I want is a vintage style women's bike (I wear dresses most days). The thing is I can only find ugly, sporty looking helmets. I'm not going to buy a bike without a helmet

Answer
try this site: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/sub_cat.cfm?subcategory_id=4210 and like the other answer said ...just get one and dont worry about what it looks like! - what is your head worth, a color? and dont worry about what they cost the cheap helmets do the same thing as the expensive ones!
