Bike helmets are designed by the Industry to meet the specific demands of the sport. The modern bike helmets are designed to meet the high speed impact, and to be light and cool. A necessity in such an aerobic sport. Thus maximizing protection and comfort without hampering performance.

You can ride your bike with a motorcycle, full face helmet on .... it will exceed the safety requirements, but if you intend to try to ride with it beware of the weight and the lack of ventilation. The weight will make your neck sore and tired, and the heat will build up very quickly and can cause heat exhaustion.

In the BMX section of Bike shops they will probably have a full face helmet that may be more kindly for your needs. I can say that I have raced for several decades. Had many racing and street falls, broken / separated shoulder, wrist, and endo's shattering my helmet(s).... but never have I had an injury to my jaw.... in fact I have never seen an injury to the jaw.

Check out the BMX stuff but if they don;t have the ventilation, live with a good standard helmet!

Which Bicycle Helmet Should I Buy?

BillBill

I'll be doing all terrain riding. Was looking into Giro, Bell...are there any other reputable brands? And also there are many choices. My budget is no more than $80.00 Thanks!

Answer
All helmets must meet the standards set by the Consumer Products Safety Commission. Look for a sticker or label to that effect for every helmet that you consider.

Every time I buy a helmet I go to a well-stocked bike shop and try them all. I buy the one that feels the most comfortable regardless of the name on it. So far, Giro has been the winner most of the time. My unscientific experience is that Bell helmets tend to fit better for heads that are more round than oblong. Giro helmets tend to fit better for heads that are more oblong than round. But, that's just my opinion. YMMV.

What do you get for a more expensive helmet? More expensive helmets are supposed to be lighter, better ventilated, and have better retention systems. One thing for certain -- you do get bling and more expensive marketing!

how can I make my $5 bicycle helmet look less lame?

Europa

it's dark blue with Melbourne sprawled on the side. even the shape is unflattering for my head.

Can I spray paint it like I do with wooden objects?

It is unfortunate that Melbourne has utterly weird laws that require a cyclist to wear a helmet.

Answer
Don't paint it (It will damage it). Assuming it's legitimate helmet that meets safety standards dress it up with a funny helmet cover (See the link for some ideas scattered in among some pretty lame ones). If it's not in good shape, replace it.

The laws are NOT weird they could save you from serious injury or death. I know I'm alive to day (or at least not a brain dead vegetable) because I was wearing a helmet when I got cut off by a truck years ago.

Do people preform better with a bicycle helmet

Answer
Besides the obvious head protection, I would guess that a rider contending with a headwind would be more aerodynamic than one without a helmet. Will that mean a hill of beans if you are not against the clock? No. So, I guess everything goes back to safety.

Best.

teenage quotes growing up?

Becca H

what is that one quote that goes something like "popsicles become cigarettes, underwear became thongs"? thanks!

Answer
There is more than one version...

Lollipops become cigarettes, Pepsi becomes vodka, undies become g-strings, pills become overdose. Wow does life change much? Remember when getting high meant swinging at the playground? When protection meant wearing a helmet? When the worst things you could get from boys were cooties? When your Dad's shoulders where the highest place on earth and your Mom was your hero? When race issues were about who ran fastest? When War was only a Card Game? When the only things that hurt you were skinned knees? Back when goodbyes meant only until tomorrow? And we couldn't wait to grow up. Nowadays I'm a teen, I party, smoke, toke, drink, pop. It's everyday life, what happened?"

âLollipops turn into cigarettes. The innocent ones turn into sluts. Homework goes in the trash. Detention becomes suspension. Soda becomes vodka. Bikes become cars. Kisses turn into sex. Remember when getting high meant swinging on the playground? When protection meant wearing a helmet? When the worst things you could get from boys were cooties? Dadâs shoulders were the highest place on earth and mum was your hero? Your worst enemies were your siblings. Race issues were about who ran the fastest. War was only a card game. And the only drug you knew was cough medicine. When wearing a skirt didnât make you a slut. The only drama you knew of was Romeo and Juliet? The only thing you could cheat in was games, and Players were only for sports- not relationships? The most pain you felt was when you skinned your knees, and goodbyes only meant until tomorrow? The only way we could change was with clothes, not ourselves. And we absolutely couldnât wait to grow upâ¦and now growing up is our worst fearâ¦"

"Growing up

where do you find bicycle safety courses for children?

fidget

I have children ages 6, & 10, who don't understand the importance of wearing a helmet & safety gear. Please help.

Answer
Check out the League of American Bicyclists and see if they have any classes in your area. If they don't, maybe they can recommend someone.

If that's not a good option, do your own demo. Get a couple of small mellons (maybe cantellope) -- one really ripe and the other a bit green (but not so much that the kids will notice). Put the green one in a helmet and drop them both from the same height (5 or 6 ft) so the helmet hits first. The green one in the helmet will be OK and the ripe one will splat. Then ask them if that's what they want to have happen to their head!

The helmet wins every time (plus they got to watch Mom or Dad make a mess with a mellon)! You might have to make up an excuse why you don't re-drop the one in the helmet to prove that it'd break, too, so be prepared. Mellon for breakfast?

Adult seeks "green" gift for 13 year old. Help!?

Canebrake

I'm attending a bar mitzvah soon for a kid who is very much into environmental issues, and I'd like my gift to be in this area. He lives in New York City, Upper West Side, a stone's throw from Broadway (up there), so he's a sophisticated urbanite--as sophisticated as one can be at 13. If possible, I want to get him something other than money or a donation to some cause or another or a gift card or anything electronic, video or computer related. I'm figuring $50 to $100. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Does he have a bicycle?
Does he have a world globe?

Telescope?
Bota bag?
Helmet?

Edit:
Normally, Ferg D's idea would cost much more than $100. I think he is offering you a sweet deal.

Answer
Schwinn Thrasher Adult Micro Bicycle black/grey Helmet (Adult) is a great helmet. It fits well (6'3" 200 pound male). The adjustment wheel works perfectly and is well made. There is a lot of cooling airflow when you are out riding and the visor blocks the sun quite well. I was surprised with the build quality given the price and it even looks good on top of it all! (In fact it's good enough/stylish enough to steal apparently and I'm back for my second helmet. If someone wants to steal this helmet and save their thief head I will happily purchase more and pass them around to anyone who wants one.) Thanks Schwinn!

is a vespa safe for a 17yr old?

Ruth

my younger sister has always wanted a vespa. i feel like they will run over her. i was thinking of getting her one with helmet and safety accessories and all (of course) as a graduation present, but im scared for her safety and shes 17yrs old. i know she wont be driving it to very far places. but still... as the older sister i feel responsible and well. what are your opinions: should i get her the best present ever or should i just find something else to give her.

Answer
Scooters are safer than motorcycles, and safer for girls than boys, because boys suffer from 'testosterone poisoning'. 8^) They don't go that fast, and you can't do wheelies or burnouts on them. They are very easy to ride since they have a low center of gravity and even automatic transmission. If your sister can ride a bicycle she could probably just jump on a scooter and ride it away. If she's generally level-headed (like most 17 year old girls are) she'd probably be fine.

Vespas are very pretty and stylish but they're expensive for what they are. A Japanese scooter would be a better deal for the money, plus probably more reliable.

My first bike was a scooter, a Lambretta (this was years ago). I bought it to go to school and work, but I loved riding it so much I found myself going on 100 mi. trips on weekends so I traded up to a motorcycle.

ItsSarahYo

Besides head injuries?

Answer
Helmets for kids PAH!!!!!

Kids are kids they will hurt themselves sometimes (didn't we all??)

If you're going to get them a helmet, Dont forget :

Gloves

Spine Guard
Groin Box
Knee Pads
Safety Shoes
Goggles
No sharp objects in Pockets
No jewelery or money (in case they get Mugged)
Mobile phone (in case they're late)
Mace
Burely Minders (might be dodgy people about)
Sat Nav Tracking system (incase they are lost)
Don't forget to wrap them up in lashings of cotton wool!

Do your kids wear bike helmets?

Jessica

I bought my son his first "real bike" today....and along with it i bought a helmet, which also came with knee and elbow pads. I plan on him wearing the helmet and at least knee pads...maybe not the elbows...his dad says this will make him a "sissy", and that boys shouldnt wear helmets. My son is 4, im not about to trust him to be 100% safe on a bike, and as close of an eye as i keep on him, we all know it only takes 1 second for something to happen...is it uncommon now a days to wear one? Is it "uncool"? Do your kids wear one? Why or why not? Thanks!

Answer
Okay, he's FOUR. I would not ever let my child (four or any age), (Girl or boy) on a bike without a helmet. A four year old is not a pro biker. He's going to fall and scrape his knees and hands, and get himself hurt a bunch of times. But if he's not wearing a helmet, he can fall on his head and either bust it wide open and end up in the emergancy room or end up dead over it. Any parent will make their children wear a helmet, unless they just don't care what happens to them. No, wearing a helmet will not make him a "sissy", it will save his LIFE. That's just as ignorant as saying "boys shouldn't ride motorcycles with helmets, because it makes them 'sissys'". If it does, I would rather have a "sissy" son than a "dead" son.
Explain that to his dad.

California, riding a bicycle with no helmet?

Hey guys I'm moving near my job soon and it's a great opportunity to go green and Bike my way to work everyday.

I was wondering if I can get a ticket if I get caught riding a bicycle on the bike lane with no helmet? what about the sidewalk?

Thank you in advanced.
Btw im over 18 not sure if it makes a difference or not

Answer
Helmet law or no helmet law... You should wear a helmet. The ticket is a small price to pay. Having a cracked skull because some little dog ran under you, or a crack in the pavement sent you flying, or even worse an equipment malfunction messing you up is a not worth it. You can't come back from some damage to your skull.

In most towns biking on the side walk is illegal. At least in Georgia it is. I have never viewed a cop giving a ticket for it. Side walks are for walking and bike lanes for biking. The side of the road is for bikes too! In my state every road has share the road signage. Meaning cycles have as much of a right to be in the street as a car. Remember that a cycle will never win a battle with a car! So, break your pride and put on a helmet. This coming from the guy that hates to put his on, but knows he also wants to save his brain too.

WHAT TYPE OF HELMET do I BUY for MOPEDS?

FLy

what type of helmet do i need to buy for drive my moped.. i did read somewhere that maryland law ( state i live in) says moped drivers do not have to wear helmets.. which sounds crazy to me.. (bicycle riders are required by maryland law to wear helmets if you ride on the street).. so maybe the info i read was wrong.. but EITHER way im wearing a helmet... but im not sure which type of helmet to buy...

1. do i get an open faced motorcycle helmet ( what i was thinking about getting)

2. a full faced motorcycle helmet

3. or do they have moped style helmets i see vespa helmets on sale at ebay.. but im not really feeling those type of style helmets.. so would an open faced motorcylce helmet be the best choice or not???

Answer
Two things to think about: Saftey and Price. It depends if you want alot of one and some of the other or if you can comprimise. Let me tell you though, full face helmets are made mainly for saftey versus comfort. Full face helms take some getting used to and are designed to be SNUG around the face and head in order to work best to provide their best protection. They will cost the most since they are all around protective.
An open faced helmet is usually used by people who want some protection, alot of comfort and never expect to collide face first into the pavement (the plexiglass is not that tough lol.) Easy to get on and off (not a struggle like a full face). Usually they cost less than full faced helmets.
Both types have the chin straps, of course, to keep the helm on your head.
I know nothing of moped specific helmets though, although I can contribute that I have yet to see a moped rider wear a full faced helmet, although if you want to be origional there you go lol. If you get up to freeway/highway speeds on your moped, full faced is still prob the way to go since it is not really you worried if you are going to turn your own self over onto the road but the concern of drivers who might collide with you. Hence the importance of a full faced helmet.
D.O.T. and SNELL approved full faced helmets are recommended, approved and well tested and I am certain D.O.T. certs are available on open faced helmets as well. However they are only good for one fall as one will see in the information when they buy a helmet. These two certifications are greatly important in saftey concerns since many have seen cheap imitations fail with disasterous results. It is very extensive in the reasons why helms last one fall so I will conclude my contribution.
Take care in your search and good luck.

Toddler Seats on Bicycles?

*DiZzLe*

I would just like everyone's opinion of the little bicycle seats you can attach for you kids? Does anyone have experience with these things? Are they safe? What about those little wagon type things you pull behind you (which i'd really rather not use). I want to take my son riding with me.

Answer
The seats on the back are perfectly safe if YOU are a safe rider (which as a mommy I am SURE you are) just make sure to get a helmet that FITS baby's head and ride in places that dont have TRAFFIC

(I HATE it when bikers go out to ride for their "health" on a BUSY street where they are SO likely to get hit!! ESPECIALLY w/ kids in tow!! And I have seen it A LOT!)

As far as those wagons that you can pull behind you... those are CRAP!! They are almost IMPOSSIBLE to control and steer making it VERY HARD for you to control your OWN bike. Plus the "drag" that it has makes you have to work a LOT harder when peddling and you can pretty much FORGET going uphill w/ one of those things!!

Hope that helps!

Bicycle safety?

Jordie

I recently bought a bicycle with the rear child seat attached. I bought it used at a thrift store so it didnt have safety instructions for the seat.

How old does the child have to be before they can ride in it? My 7 month old sits up perfectly by herself and is very strong. But I cant find a safety helmet for anyone under age 3. I have tried walmart and toys'r'us.

Can I put my daughter in the seat? Do they make safety helmets for young babies? If so, where can I find one?

Thanks for any help!

Answer
I believe all bike seats and bike trailers require a child to be at least 1 year. There are helmets available for toddlers, but I believe they also say for 1 year and older. Our local hospital does fittings and helmet sales but only for children over 1 year.

Can you ride on the road on a bicycle in the UK without a helmet?

John

Ive just bought a bike, and I was wondering if I could ride it on the road legally?

Answer
Yes you can there is no law or legal requirement to wear a helmet. The reason you see most cyclists wearing a helmet is that if they roll into a hole in the road or there tire goes over a bump in the road they could lose control of the bike especially in a racer with the speed and the position you would be in it would be hard to not lose control of the bike. Even hitting a stone could cause you to fall or some lose pebbles on the road.

It is really suggested that you do get a helmet for you own safety.

Best of luck and have fun with your new bike.

Riding a motorcycle is unsafe, even with a helmet

Lois Griff

People in cars have to wear seatbelts...........you should have to wear helmets.

But even with a helmet, motorcycles are very unsafe......if you crash, your body can go flying. How wreckless.

Regular, non-motor bikes are very beneficial and serve as healthy exercise....but still wreckless to ride them without a helmet.

Why don't you people wear helmets? Do you not mind if your head gets busted open?

Answer
You are right, motorcycles are unsafe. Some other things that are unsafe: sex, airplanes, elevators, earthquakes, sharks, boats, ocean, trains, wilderness, cars, dogs, bicycles, skateboards, drugs, running. Now if you check statistics you'll find motorcycling doesn't need you attention as much as many other things. Sex causes more injury and death that motorcycles ever could, perhaps you should spend your efforts to fix sex. What do you care if someone busts their head open, does it somehow effect your life OR does your life suck and you choose to harass people about wearing a helmet cause it makes you feel better. If you just want to help people then I'd suggest doing something about the terrible drivers that choose to crash into people with motorcycles, if they are hard at seeing then maybe they shouldn't drive, fix that if you want to make a difference. By the way, I wear a helmet and I know it's not up to me if other people do. Maybe make a deal with some non helmet wearers, You'll do what they tell you to do if they do what you want.

UGH! My dad doesn't get that dogs shouldn't have chicken bones!?

.

He just goes on and on about,

"When I was young, we ALWAYS fed dogs chicken bones and they lived to be one hundred and two! I just don't understand Americans! They think they have to provide health care for a DOG?!?"

Ugh, he is so annoying! I can't stand him! I wish I could report him for animal abuse! We have a dog and he can't afford a vet or anything. If it weren't for the fact that the owner we got it from gave her shots and got her fixed, we would probably be BYBs too!

What bones ARE appropriate to give a dog? Maybe I can convince him to give a different kind of bone instead.

Answer
Good luck! Parents can be really tough to deal with - especially when they're doing something unwise. Just because his dogs were lucky enough to survive eating chicken bones, doesn't mean your current dog will. My grandfather's collie survived eating lightbulbs, rat poison and a plaster wall. But that was LUCK. I worked as a vet tech and saw many dogs come in with disastrous and expensive problems from eating all kinds of things.

Maybe it would help to remind him that people used to drive without seatbelts and ride bicycles without helmets and do a lot of unsafe things. Sure, if he's LUCKY enough to never be in an accident he doesn't need one. But if he's the one who ends up dead or in a coma from a head injury, his family will miss him! If he absolutely insists on the chicken bone thing, boil the heck out of them first to soften them up - but I still wouldn't give them to any dog of mine.

Personally, I don't like any real bones for dogs. The big beef knuckle bones are safe, but if they're in the house, the grease will soil your carpet and furniture. They also attract nasty bacteria if you keep them more than a day without boiling off the meat. Nylabones and hard rubber Kong toys are the best. They're indestructible and very safe - as long as they are too big to swallow. I once saw a German Shepherd swallow a tennis ball - he had to be put to sleep because his owners couldn't afford the $600 surgery to remove it and the intestinal blockage it caused.

Is this normal for her to be acting this way?

a el

Well, for those of you who know Luna and I were in a 'little' accident on Thursday. (If you don't know anything about it, there's a post on my blog with the details. My blog link is on my Y!A profile).

I think she's mad at ME. Like I got back on and rode after it and then gave her a bath and groomed her after I cooled her off. She was kind of like distant..I guess? Then I waited 30 minutes before I fed her and she was kind of hesitant to come up to her spot.

Then the day after she didn't come up to me in the field, didn't want cookies, and was just acting kind of cold.

Today, my mom fed for me because I felt like complete junk. She said she was acting like her normal self. Then I went by on my way home from a party and I was still getting the "cold shoulder" from her.

I'm still really sweet and loving with her, but ever since the fall she's just been weird. I'm not mad at her or anything. I could have done things differently (wore my helmet :P, stayed on and possibly got thrown into trees vs. a fence, etc), but I was very forgiving of her.

Once I'm better I'm going to do some join up, but I was just wondering if her acting this way is normal post accident.

I've never had a riding accident where the horse didn't stay near me (she went to a neighbor's field and just left me) and acted weird afterwards.

We normally have an amazing bond. She knows my mom's van and my bicycle and will come running if she sees either of those. She can see my house from her field and nickers when my gate opens (that's the way I normally walk to her field). She's always very in my pocket and sweet. I just don't know what's going on :(
Oh, btw, we're pretty sure her little 'episode' was caused by getting stung. I was walking through where we were riding 2 weeks ago and got stung in the same spot. She also had a bump that looked like a sting spot..but now it's gone. So I think that's why she took off and had the fit.

The vet is going to look at her in two weeks..I swear it's her left stiffle and I'm thinking maybe EPM? I'm gunna look into having her stiffle injected. We were just at the vet though and he said it was JUST her hocks and nothing else.

Answer
That sucks...and is really weird.

Is she just being marish? Could she be in heat? I feel like there must be some kind of a physical situation going on with her...I don't think she would just randomly be a brat all of a sudden.

I know that whenever someone has fallen off Shazam he feels horrible, hangs his head low and it's obvious he is horribly sorry and wants to make sure the rider is ok (I have fallen off him only once, and saw a little girl fall off him at summer camp before I owned him).

Maybe Luna is just way different and doesn't blame herself for causing the incident, and is just associating the fall with you at this point like Maria said.

Definitely do a join-up when you can. Join-up has made me and Shazam SOOOO much closer. he follows me EVERYWHERE now. Haha.

.....or maybe she has Dissociative Identity Disorder and she is now her evil split personality, Elvira.

I want to get a moped for my 16th birthday (how & what to do)?

maiashimer

I'm thinking about asking my parents for a moped my birthday next month. Here's a little information about me:
a) I'm going to be 16
b) I have a driver's permit
c) I am about 5' tall and 100 lbs
My first issue is that I really don't know much about mopeds. The reason I prefer it to a scooter is because in my state, it is considered a bicycle if it is at least 2 horsepower and have a top speed no more than 30 mph, which means you don't need to buy insurance, have a motorcycle license or wear a helmet (though I think I would anyway). It's embarrassing to say, but I really don't know much about horsepower. I know my dad knows quite a bit more than me but if you know about mopeds and scooters (especially if you own one), and have any personal suggestions, I would love to hear them :)
Of course I would like a cheaper moped, though I definitely don't want to sacrifice too much quality for price. I don't know how long I would want to keep it, and I know a lot of people don't keep cheap mopeds and scooters once they get old. I definitely don't want anything that could fall apart too easily, though on the base & island (Kaneohe, Oahu) speeds are generally pretty low. I think the highest speed limit on base is like 35 mph.
So, would you recommend I get a new or used one, for any reason?
What might be a good type, or even specific model for me?
If you're a Hawaii resident, do you have any suggestion for me at all, including about license & shops?
I would even like to hear if you have any reasons against getting one, including safety concerns; I would still like to hear it. My dad said of course he's a little hesitant because even though he trusts me and thinks I'm responsible, there's always risk, especially because other drivers often don't watch for smaller vehicles. It might be safer here, though, than some places like L.A., where less people ride mopeds and have higher speed limits, and more lanes and more lane-changing.
Thank you so much for all answers, especially since my question was so long!!!

im 41 6 foot n i just bought 1...i love it it gets 100 miles a gallon on most mopeds in there profile it will say 30mph restricted. that means it can go faster but by law a moped can only go 30mph. this is what i did i went on the net n found the best moped for the $ not a deal but a a really nice bike w/the best value n that was ' the buddy" made by "GENUINE"the bike looks nice not wimpy n the tires are big which helps alot on dirt roads. the helmet fits right under the seat n get 100miles a gallon. so i had it for 2 weeks n paid $100.00 to get it unrestricted not only to go faster but it safer. its makes it safer bc sometimes you cant tell if a car can see you or not so ether you want 2 get out of there way or drive next to the car that there waiting for.there alot of fun but you got 2 be careful of other cars goodluck

7.Is this bike listed on craigslist any good? Then you see a link to a rusted old ten speed.
8.Do I need to wear helmet in (whatever city or state they live in)?
9.Bicyclists, why donât you get off the road & onto the sidewalk where you belong?
10.If the trip by car takes 15 minutes, how long by bicycle?

Did I forget any of the good ones? I imagine I did.

New Zealand- what do you need if you want to ride bikes on the road? is there a licence or something?

John

i know that you have to have a helmet. what else do you need to ride bikes on the public road in new zealand, and what are the laws?

Answer
It's been a few years, but last I rode in New Zealand it was like Canada .. a bike is a vehicle and expected to obey the rules of the road, but no license or insurance is required. As with most countries bikes aren't allowed on posted roads (e.g. divided highways ... not much of an issue since there are relatively few) but otherwise can use public roads. Note that roads can be steep (it's a hilly country) and turns sharp, so cyclists need to ride defensively (although most NZ drivers are good there are foreigners too, who may not be used to driving on the left!). See the site at the link ... it may be of interest.

Where can I get a bike helmet to fit my large head?

ZaMis

Not only is my freakish melon wide it is tall. So when I try on even the largest helmet it rides up so high on my head that it doesn't provide much protection and looks ridiculous. Is there a manufacturer that specializes i hard to fit heads? How about a shop in the Twin Cities?

Answer
Try a skateboard or BMX helmet. Just Google skateboard and your zip code.

How does a bike helmet help reduce the impact of a crash?

Grant

Using equations if possible, thanks. I know that it spreads the force across a larger area of your head, but what about absorbing?

Answer
A helmet reduces the impact of a crash using two methods: distributing the force over a large area and slowing down the impact.

Using the basic equation of force, Force = mass * acceleration, we can look at how these two methods reduce impact.

Force can be measured simply as total force (e.g. 100 Newtons) or quantified by force over area (e.g. Newtons per square centimeter). As a bicycle helmet spreads the force for one point to a larger area, the force/area measure is decreased. This reduces the force applied to a single area, however, the overall force applied is still the same.

Acceleration is the other part of the equation that a helmet works to minimize. Acceleration is often measured as length over time-squared (e.g. meters/second-squared). Upon impact, the helmet is designed to crush, and this process of crushing extends the amount of time involved for the head to come to a stop (or before it bounces). This increases the time value in the measure, and since the time measure is a squared value, the effects of increasing the time involved has a big impact on reducing the overall acceleration and subsequent force.

To represent the two methods used by bicycle helmets to reduce impact, it is better to rewrite the original equation of Force = mass * acceleration as force/area = mass * (distance/time^2). Now you easily see where the added area for absorbing impact, and the increased time for the impact have big impacts on the trauma experienced by the head. The mass is slightly increased by the helmet, but nowhere near makes up for the distribution of force and slower acceleration (deceleration).

Why do we have to wear helmets when...?

Zoe Love

Why do we have to wear helmets on bicycles?
If you think about it, there are more risks driving in a car and we don't wear helmets in the car?
There were nearly 6,420,000 auto accidents in the United States in 2005. And 42,636 people killed.
And as for bicycles 350,000 children ages 14 and under were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. And 250 children ages 14 and under died in bicycle-related crashes. Motor vehicles were involved in 230 of these deaths. Yet we wear helmets on bicycles not cars? Wearing a helmet in a car could've saved 1,000s of people as many die from brain related injuries. And why do we wear them on bicycles?

Answer
To protect your head\ brain, if your hit by a car on a bike your head could hit the ground with the same force as the car or be crushed under another car.

Cars have seatbelts & airbags to restrain your head from hitting anything hard, the car is also like a cage which stops your head from hitting the ground.

I think a helmet would restric your vision and increase the chances of an accident

I'm sure if wearing a helmet did drastically improve survival rate it would be compulsory

how can I make my $5 bicycle helmet look less lame?

Europa

it's dark blue with Melbourne sprawled on the side. even the shape is unflattering for my head.

Best pocket bike for kids?

Asia D

I want to purchase a pocket bike, mini dirt bike, or mini quad for my nephew's graduation present. He is 6 years old, about 60 lbs, average Height. I want to know the best thing to get him, if there are any with speed lock-outs or remote shut offs. A few good name brands would be awesome. I also need something I can get training wheels for. I'm looking to spend no more than 500. Please no comments about how he doesn't need one or that he needs to be supervised he is well taken care and we understand this isn't a toy. I just need advice on what to buy. Thank you!

Answer
Pocket bikes are Chinese made knock off's/clones of Japanese and European bikes. They are inferior to the bike they are cloned from. They do not have the reliability, dependability, quality or craftsmanship of the bikes they are cloned from.

With that said, I would recommend you look into a Japanese or European bike. He will fit on a 50cc to a 65cc bike. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM all make mini-bikes.

Since you do not have a lot to spend, you will have to look used. Check Ebay, Craigslist, CycleTrader and BikeFinds.

If you go with a used older bike, Honda used to make a MR 50 2-stroke and an XR75 4-stroke. The XR75 is built like iron and will last for your nephew's children.

The Yamaha PW50 has a restrictor that can be removed.

When it comes to training wheels, just Google mini-bike training wheels. There are a lot of different ones out there. Example: http://gokartsusa.com/EZ-Bike-Mini-Motorcycle-Training-Wheels.aspx
Training wheels are not cheap, they cost around $150. You can also look for used training wheels on Ebay and Craigslist.

If your nephew can ride a bicycle, he will be able to ride a dirt bike. I am not a fan of quads. When I taught my children to ride, I also let them ride my buddies quads. They all preferred dirt bikes to quads. Quads are super easy to learn to ride, but are very easy to tip over and if they do not keep their feet on the pegs can get run over by their own machine. Quads are also heavier than dirt bikes and if the child flips the quad, they may not be able to get our from underneath it without help.

This is the motorcycle racing section, so we mainly only recommend racing machines, but since he is just starting out a true mini-bike from say Sears or Pep Boys might fit the bill fine. These mini-bikes brand new cost under $400. Have large 4-stroke lawn mower engines on them and are perfect for trail riding and basic transportation. If your nephew likes riding though, he will outgrow the mini-bike within a summer.

Don't forget riding gear. Helmet, goggles and a pair of riding boots. Goggles, gloves, shoulder pads with chest protector, kidney belt, armored riding pants and racing jersey can come later. You can find used gear at Ebay, Craigslist, garage sales and flea markets. Does he need the protective gear for a mini-bike? Probably not, but a helmet and goggles are the minimum he should have.

If he ever needs tips on riding or maintenance, tell him to check Youtube. The amount of information on there is unbelievable. He can learn everything from fixing a flat to rebuilding an engine.

HELP! My 3 year old is driving me CRAZY!?

Q. A little background on me. I am a mother of 5- my youngest being 5 month old twin boys. My 3 year old has tantrums 4-6 times a day where she literally slams her entire body against the wall. We HAVE taken her to the pediatrician twice for this, one time he told my husband and I to buy her a bike helmet for her tantrums.
We have tried everything it feels like. We have tried cuddling and holding her through tantrums, time outs (ineffective after a while) spanking, losing privilages- nothing is working.
We try asking her why she gets so upset- and she won't say... she just screams and hits and throws her body around.
We thought maybe it was something to do with gluten so we cut that out of meals and we are using organics now to cook with.
Im seriously at my wits end with her. I love her so much but we are so frustrated with her bad behavior. The pediatrician calls her 'spirited' and says she'll grow out of it. It's been going on for months now.
Anyone else have a kid like this?
We tried timeouts for 22 days. They quickly became ineffective. She would scream in her chair- we tried talking to her then, ignoring them- you name it. They just didnt work.
We have to keep a 'behavior' journal. We had Help Me Grow evaluate her and they said she was right where she needed to be she was just 'stubborn' and agreed with the pediatricians evaluation that she's "spirited".
We have tried getting her to help out with the babies, but she sees them like toys- and tires of them quickly.
Im really afraid she is going to hurt herself with the way she throws herself around.
We have tried giving her more attention- the past two nights I let her cosleep with me. (my husband is a 3rd shift police officer) She used to cosleep as a baby before she transitioned into a big girl toddler bed. She cuddled and all that fine, but this morning she woke up and had a massive tantrum when I didn't have breakfast made fast enough. I just want to do the right thing here- I appreciate all your responses.

Answer
hehehe.. I WAS one of those kids....

Is she normally a good kid, loving, happy.. just likes to push buttons? Do you ask her 'pick up her toys' and she responds with a big loud 'NO'??? Does she stamp her feet, throw things when she's in a rage because she hasn't received what she wanted (or doesn't see the fairness in what you are asking)? Then... well I'll let you know what my mom did with me. (Gawd, I hope I won't have a kid like I was - luckily my mom was like me when she was little and therefore understood it)...

Anyway, My mom would ignore me when I would get into a rage like that. First she would put me in my room and close the door - I would tear it up, throwing things around - literally making it look like a cyclone went through it. If I would storm out of the room, she would put me back in, kicking and screaming on occasion. I had to be confined when I went into my rages (not just an 'open-air' time out, but in my room). She put all my breakable stuff up high so I wouldn't destroy that stuff - until I was about 4.5-5 years old. Eventually i would calm down. She would hear me talking to myself. She would keep listening until she would hear me playing. it wasn't until then that she would come in, calm and collected and nice. She would say to me "have you calmed down now? Do you think you're ready to come out? Do you know why I put you in your room?" After I answered those questions she would help me pick up my stuff I threw about the room. She would be really cheery about things though. I am sure it was frustrating on her lol. We would then go and have a few minutes just her and myself, without my brother or sister. She would get me to clean up the toys I had a rage over (or do whatever it was that she'd asked me to do prior to my tantrum). I would end up doing it most times, without fuss.
There were times when I would be so bad that she would almost lose her temper herself. She would lock herself in the bathroom, turn on the bathtub and sing to herself, blocking out my kicking and screaming. I would eventually calm down. and she could come out.

I remember being in those rages, even 30 years later. I remember being afraid of my anger but not understanding it. Having my mom let me get my rage out, and then coming in and tell me things would be ok and that she still loved me helped me to deal with them. I out grew them by the time I was about 4-4.5. I don't have anger problems now but I do fight for myself - I am sure just part of my personality. Just don't lose your cool with her whatever you do. Don't go into a rage yourself. Also, there are times when you will have to raise your voice and say 'NO' (say she tries to bite you when you pick her up). Don't raise your voice often though becasue then it'll just be expected. My mom raised her voice very rarely so when she did - I would know that i had really disappointed her (like when I would try and bite her.. eeks). I hated to disappoint my mom! My dad would yell all the time - I didn't care so much if I disappointed him because I always got that reaction from him. Anyway, if you refrain from getting really angry with her, she'll be less likely to respond with anger herself.. she'll probably out grow this earlier and it'll help her in the future. She'll mimic your responses and how you deal with your anger. She needs you and your husband to teach her that anger will be ignored and that she won't get what she wants. I know it's odd but she also needs comfort (that is probably partly why she's acting out). She's got a strong will - which is a good thing so you don't want to break her of her will (she'll be a fighter in the face of adversity) but you don't want her to focus her energies into anger but developing another productive focus. Mine became school and sports and making my parents (particularly my mom) proud of me.

I hope that helps

Edit: I noticed that someone said consistency.. that is totally true! My mom, without fail, sent me to my room. It was always the same routine. I guess that is why I remember it so well haha. Also, don't worry, the tantrums will slow down as she gets older, over the next year. I still had the occasional one when I was about 5-6 but really, it wasn't often!

Good luck!

I saw that you added that you ignore her.. keep that up - put her in her room and she'll learn to calm herself down. If you go in while she's screaming and throwing herself around, she's getting attention. Just let her rip her room up, throw herself around the room. If she hurts herself, she'll learn (I did a few times - I kicked a solid wood foot of my dresser so hard it cracked apart!!. I learned to never do that again). Ignore, Ignore, Ignore (while she's in her room where she can do the least amount of damage to things and herself). if the screaming is driving you up the wall, put on loud music or start to laugh (I talked to my mom today about your question, she would try and find the humour in the situation, the fact that such a little kid could get into such a rage) She sounds exactly like I was. Peace to you! ;-)

what weight is heavy for a full face mountain bike/downhill helmet?

needing a full face helmet for riding downhill this summer and seen a few for sale online but dont know what weight is "light" i dont want a heavy one for obvious reasons. i seen a motocross one for sale for £15 and the guy said it would be ok for downhill mtb. but being motocross its designed for motocross bikes so would no doubt be heavier.

then again he might just be saying motocross helmet so ive asked him what weight it is and waiting for him to reply so needing to know what is classed as a lightweight helmet.

thanks

Answer
giro remedy's are light, and so are fox rampage. if your looking for light helmets and not DOT helmets. I have both those and there nice and light, a lot of vents too.

What kind of helmet do I need for mountain biking?

Entertainm

Answer

A standard bike helmet will work for you. But, be sure to try various brands. Each company seems to make helmets that fir one shape of a head. There are some companies, whose helmets I cannot wear. They hurt just to put on. You do not have to get the top of the line. All helmets pass the same tests. What you get for more money is lighter, more air vents / cooler. more exotic materials, and better suspension systems. The moderate priced helmets will have parts of all of these.

Is there an adult bike helmet out there that doesn't look ridiculous?

Sierra

The ones I've tried on are so huge and heavy---I get a headache from them and I feel like I look ridiculous. After many close calls with spacey drivers on cell phones or drugs, I have gotten to the point where I won't ride my bike until I get a helmet. So any name brands and model #'s that you could suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Personally, I think people not wearing helmets on their bikes look like idiots.

If you have only tried helmets from places like Wal-Mart or Target, they are pretty heavy and uncomfortable, from my experience (had to buy a helmet in a rural area on a camping trip when I forgot mine--it was all that was available).

If you go to a bike shop or a place like REI, you can buy a decent helmet for under $50 and a really nice helmet for under $100. Giro and Bell are the two biggest companies (actually, it is the same company now). Specialized makes some nice helmets as well, and a few other companies, too.

I recommend buying one at a place you can try it on. Different brands fit differently. Some fit round heads better, others fit oval heads better. Some come in different sizes, some are universal with a ratchet on the back to tighten or loosen. If you have been getting headaches, you might be wearing a helmet that was too tight or was pinching somewhere, or it was both and too heavy as well. Occasionally my helmet will pinch a little during a ride, I think my head swells a bit or something. I unclick the ratchet in the back one notch and it is just fine.

Try on a bunch of helmets. You should barely be able to feel it. I have three helmets right now. One cost about $30, a Giro Transfer for everyday commuting. One cost $100, a Specialized Aurora--It sometimes pinches a bit if I don't adjust it just so, but it is pink, so I wear it. And one cost about $135, a Bell Sweep, I got it on sale and have never actually worn it--a spare for when I need to replace one of the others. All are comfortable, but surprisingly, the $30 is most comfortable.

What is a reasonable price for a bike helmet?

John

I would like to know how much is too much on a all-mountain/single track bicycle helmet and how much is reasonable. Also, any recommendations, the main helmet that I was looking at was the Bontrager Lithos which is $129 and I was wondering if this is a bit outlandish for a helmet or if that is what's necessary for a quality helmet?

Answer
In the U.S. every helmet regardless of price is tested to the same minimum standards. As the helmet gets more expensive the helmet gets better, lighter, and stronger.

$129 is a LOT cheaper than brain surgery or even a trip to the hospital from your helmet shattering on the pavement.

EDIT: OK, I guess I'll have to go into a little more detail. As I said before, all helmets must meet minimum requirements. The differences with better helmets, however, are staggering. First, cheaper helmets (asm entioned before) are good for ONE impact. That does not take into consideration that almost every accident involves more than one impact as you bounce off the road. That is part of the CPSC regulation.

Good helmets have internal webbing to allow the helmet to stay together as your head bounces off the road as cheaper ones come off your head. Cheap helmets break apart and fall away leaving your head exposed after the first hit.

Good helmets fit the head much more securely without using low durometer pads stuck to the inside, again making the safety fetaures of the helmet much more effective. Most decent helmets also have less abrasive straps and pinch-free buckles along with a much more effective and slip-free situation.

Good helmets also have a positive placing system of some sort to passively place the helmet in the correct position on your head. Again, VERY important feature.

Soooo, if all you want is minimum protection- if you don't particularly need your head for anything special- than a $25 helmet is great. On the other hand, if you tend to use your head (or anything that might be stored inside it) occasionally, that $129 is pretty cheap insurance.

Whats the best deal price wise for a dirt bike helmet?

Mike

Answer
i cherish my precious head but unfortunatly my passion for bikes outways my budget. when i bought my bike used for a steal i got a helmet thrown in with the deal. thats probably about as good as you can get it. besides that dealers will usually put together a package (not so top of the line gear thrown together for about a 100/200 price) good helmets will cost you 200/300 dollars alone. so my advice - tuck and roll! :)

Bicycling, training and knee pain?

Rene

Hello, ive been wanting to start biking but not sure if i should.. I broke my leg and injured my knee 2 years ago and i have knee pain, can't realy run without pain, so ive been looking into biking, and was wondering if its recommended, and what kind of bike i should get or what kind of training>? Thankss

Answer
rene

I had a tib / fib and cracked my knee in 21 spots (a long story). I have always ridden a bike, and rode competitively in college. The bike is a natural for you, you can get the cardio in with very low impact. But you need to learn the proper techniques of spinning (pedal technique) and gear shifting.

While it is low impact, you can 'feel' the pain when going up hills (at least I do), but flat land you can go forever at a competitive speed. I would suggest that you look at a good quality Hybrid bike made by Trek, Specialized, Cannondale or Giant. You want a good pair of cycling shorts (either road or mtn bike) a jersey, and a helmet.

I suggest you ask around and find a bike group, club , or friends to start you off, Please also use this forum to ask any questions that you may have. In or area many churches have riding groups. ANd any local bike shop can give you details on local cycle clubs.

I might also suggest you learn about liquid advil to take the edge of the pre and post ride discomfort.... and a product called Salanpas pain patches. You can get them over the counter, dirt cheap, at your local pharmacy (better deal at costco). You gotta try them. The green box is great and has worked for me for twenty years. They just came out with 'Arthritus' and 'Pain" patches as well. Twice as strong, but twice the price. A great product!

Good luck!

Trek, Specialized, Giant or Cannondale Hybrid?

vablue

Which is the best for the money?

Answer
Well I work at a place where we sell Specialized, so I'm biased a little. But ride all 4, in the same day, checking for the same things on every bike. The thing about bicycles is that the components that make the biggest ride difference(drivetrain, brakes, suspension, ect.) are made by somebody else and they are availible with whatever brand you want, the difference lies in frame geometry and materials. Everyone is different, everyone rides different. So figure out which bikes are in your price range, pick a sunny saturday or sunday and go bike shopping. Pick whatever feels best. Most brands/bike shops will offer a lifetime warranty on the frame, if they don't consider going somewhere else, and if you keep your bike tuned, regardless of brand, the parts will last a really long time(unless you ride real hard but that doesn't happen to too many hybrids).

Don't forget wear a helmet, it'll could save your life. Ride on
