New Zealand- what do you need if you want to ride bikes on the road? is there a licence or something?

John

i know that you have to have a helmet. what else do you need to ride bikes on the public road in new zealand, and what are the laws?

Answer
It's been a few years, but last I rode in New Zealand it was like Canada .. a bike is a vehicle and expected to obey the rules of the road, but no license or insurance is required. As with most countries bikes aren't allowed on posted roads (e.g. divided highways ... not much of an issue since there are relatively few) but otherwise can use public roads. Note that roads can be steep (it's a hilly country) and turns sharp, so cyclists need to ride defensively (although most NZ drivers are good there are foreigners too, who may not be used to driving on the left!). See the site at the link ... it may be of interest.

Can you ride a bike on the sidewalk in New Zealand?

And is it necessary to have your helmet on even if your riding the bike on the sidewalk or on a short "no exit" street and not the road?
Is it illegal to ride bikes on the sidewalk but i have seen some people ride?
And your just a 13 year old

Answer
yes you have to wear you helmet on your bike if you don't you could get a $55 dollar fine if a cop sees you.
And no its not illegal to ride you bike on the footpath .
