where do you find bicycle safety courses for children?

fidget

I have children ages 6, & 10, who don't understand the importance of wearing a helmet & safety gear. Please help.

Answer
Check out the League of American Bicyclists and see if they have any classes in your area. If they don't, maybe they can recommend someone.

If that's not a good option, do your own demo. Get a couple of small mellons (maybe cantellope) -- one really ripe and the other a bit green (but not so much that the kids will notice). Put the green one in a helmet and drop them both from the same height (5 or 6 ft) so the helmet hits first. The green one in the helmet will be OK and the ripe one will splat. Then ask them if that's what they want to have happen to their head!

The helmet wins every time (plus they got to watch Mom or Dad make a mess with a mellon)! You might have to make up an excuse why you don't re-drop the one in the helmet to prove that it'd break, too, so be prepared. Mellon for breakfast?

I'm attending a bar mitzvah soon for a kid who is very much into environmental issues, and I'd like my gift to be in this area. He lives in New York City, Upper West Side, a stone's throw from Broadway (up there), so he's a sophisticated urbanite--as sophisticated as one can be at 13. If possible, I want to get him something other than money or a donation to some cause or another or a gift card or anything electronic, video or computer related. I'm figuring $50 to $100. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Does he have a bicycle?
Does he have a world globe?
binoculars?
Telescope?
Bota bag?
Helmet?

Edit:
Normally, Ferg D's idea would cost much more than $100. I think he is offering you a sweet deal.
