Poshmarshm

It's in the summer, with a friend, for about two weeks. I'm going to sleep in hostels or camp out.
Can you think of anything less so obvious I should take with me? What should I take to eat? (remember, two weeks)

I can't carry too much, as I'll be on a bike and I can think of all the obvious things - bike, sleeping bag, bike repair kit, first aid kit etc.

I'll give best answer to either the most innovative, unexpected, unusual YET HELPFUL idea, or the longest useful list.
Thank you!

States and or cities that are bike friendly in the USA?

Celianna

Can anyone tell me states or cities that are very bike friendly? Such as having bike paths, or even bike streetlights, and people are commonly riding their bikes in every day (so that cars watch out for bikes as well).

I live in the Netherlands, a very big bike country. We have our own bike paths, separate from streets, and our own streetlights, and even laws that say we need to have our lights on during the night. I'm moving to the USA, and I want to be in a city or town that is bike friendly, because I still want to ride my own bike!

Answer
The best city or bit of country in the USA is going to be worse for riding a bike than the worst parts of the Netherlands.

The guy writing a bike blog about Portland often mentions turning green with jealousy when commenting on the bike blogs about the Netherlands. Even the old cycle lanes in the Netherlands about to be upgraded are way better than the best available in most of the USA.

The USA has a 2% or less bike share in traffic, with the exceptional city where it goes up to 5% in summer. Most of those people young men riding bikes wearing helmets, yellow safety jackets and keeping a camera handy to take photos of drivers cutting them off or bumping on their tail.
In the Netherlands the bike share is 25 to 40% depending on which part of the country. All people ride, if not all the time, including little children and old people. It is not strange to see someone in their 80's on a bike in city traffic, or peddling from a village to the next town for a bit of shopping.
Helmets are almost only worn by racing people while training and racing. Yellow safety jackets are almost unheard of and certainly not needed for commuting to work or school.

People who are not familiar with cycling in the Netherlands will not appreciate the difference with other countries.

how old do you have to be to drive a motor scooter?

Sissy

Answer
Hello key key

If you are in Canada I believe you have to be 16 to drive any powered vehicle. But, you can use a limited speed (32 km/hr maximum) electric scooter without licence or insurance because it is classified as a power assisted bicycle. Or you can drive a limited speed electric motorcycle (70 km/hr maximum) with a regular licence and insurance - no motorcycle licence required. It is always smart to take some lessons for riding 2 wheeled vehicles, but the scooters have a lower center of gravity making them easier to balance than a bicycle.

If you are considering buying this is information from the best electric scooters and motorcycles I could find locally - Motorino Scooters from Greenwit Technologies - when I went shopping for myself. (I live in British Columbia)

I took this from the web site of their shop in Vancouver, but their scooters are carried all across Canada:

What are the advantages of having an electric scooter?
a) Freedom - it is classified as a bicycle and as such can benefit from all the freedom you have riding a regular bike.
b) Economical â donât pay for parking, insurance, driverâs license, gas, maintenance, pennies to charge. If used as a substitute for a car it pays off in 4 months.
c) Safer than a bike â the scooters look like, and have all the safety features of, a gas motorcycle. From our customerâs experience, car drivers pay scooter riders more respect than regular bicycle riders.
d) Quiet â no engine or transmission noise. It is literally noiseless. (I believe this applies to the brushless motors only, which is what these people make)
e) Environmental â it is greener than using a bus. Utilizes the idle night energy when you charge it. Batteries are recycled and there is no emission.
f) A lot of fun â you will believe when you try it.

Who would benefit from an electric scooter?
a) People who want to avoid heavy traffic. Since our MOTORINO⢠scooters are classified by Transport Canada as Power Assisted Bicycles they travel beside the traffic or anywhere where regular bicycles are used.
b) People who work in the city and are tired of looking for, or paying for, parking. All MOTORINO⢠scooters can be legally parked on the sidewalk and have security antitheft features.
c) Daily commuters traveling up to 60-70 km on flat roads or 30-40 on hills. The high torque motor provides enough power to handle 15 degrees hills.
d) Commuters who hate to get wet in rainy weather. The specially designed for MOTORINO⢠scooters rain cape which is included with the scooter, and the visor helmet, protect the rider completely in rain.

I hope that is helpful

If I have a suspended license (DUI), live in Tasmania, can I ride a motor assisted bicycle?
I have a suspended license for DUI.
I live in Tasmania
And I need a way to get around without getting booked.

I THINK I'm right to say that I am allowed to ride a "motor assisted" bicycle, so long as it is not over 200watts power... and I wear a helmet etc. But I have been told that I will get booked if I ride on the road because it has a motor and if it's on the road it's classed as a motor vehicle.

Does anyone know if this is true? Can I ride this bike without being booked?

Thanks!

Answer
I only know USA laws and statutes on motorized bicycles/mopeds. Many places consider them to be the same thing. 50 states is enough for me to remember. The laws vary greatly from state to state and country to country. You should be able to go online and look up the statutes.

Does anyone feel that the USA has no right putting missiles in Germany?

emily Rose

Isn't this what the NATO and the United Nations are responsible for? Are you tired of the USA always sticking their nose into things that should be dealt with by already in place by the United Nations. Do you think Bush again jumped into putting the American people second. And not even considering the ramification it may mean how the world looks at us. Isn't this how we ended in Iraq, Bush satisfying a vendetta Saddam had out on Bush Sr. life. And lied about WMD's to try to make his case, even before the United Nations had a chance to work.

Answer
I think it's up to the Germans really. As a random musing, I read somewhere that the Israelis thought that Patriot Missiles ( of 1991 Gulf War vintage) did not actually work (ie intercept incoming missiles) , which could somewhat defeat the object of the whole exercise, really, unless they have improved since then.

A part of me always regards a lot of these weapons as scams against the taxpayer, really, especially the really expensive ones. You know, the ones that someone aims at you from 2,000,000,000 kilometres squared away from you, then it arrives, knocks on your front door, goes upstairs and looks for you under hiding under the bed. The ones that cost £34455503283-59p to blow up someone driving to work in Iraq.

A lot of these systems are a bit like building pyramids, except the Egyptians did not demolish the pyramids after thirty years and then bill the taxpayer for another lot.

I do wonder, and I am not an expert, what use are nuclear weapons and hi-tech weaponry in general, against people who use bicycles and Datsun pickup trucks, communicate by passing notes to each other? and use automatic rifles and suicide belts? I would have thought you would have needed more old-fashioned infantry with big boots and helmets, the sort of people who donât want to join the Army in the UK as the salaries are so poor, perhaps as much of the money has gone on pyramid-like nuclear weapons that will be dismantled, God willing, in thirty years time.

what are the bicycle helmet laws in ontario canada?

Caryn A

Answer
Canada has some provincial and local helmet laws. Ontario's helmet law for cyclists under 18 took effect in 1995. It was originally to have covered all ages, and there is a bill in parliament now to extend it to do that. There is spirited opposition by a few cyclists there. (see links below) Proponents cite the cost of cyclists' injuries to the national health system, without reference to the much greater cost of treating those injured in cars, a blind spot also found in the US. In March, 2003, the Canadian Institute for Health Information announced that hospitalizations due to cycling-related injuries were down 12.5 per cent between 1997-98 and 2001-02.
The Canadian province of Nova Scotia enacted all-age bicycle helmet legislation in 1997. Toronto University Professor of Epidemiology Dr Mary Chipman published a research paper (PDF 44k) in March 2002 through the Canadian Medical Association Journal: "The data from Australia and now Nova Scotia suggest that legislation increases helmet use but also reduces the numbers of cyclists."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Further research published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal suggests a 62% reduction in cyclist numbers in Halifax the year after helmet law enactment, with more cyclist injuries recorded than before the law and a nominal reduction in head injuries (8 less head injuries in 1999).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The failure of the helmet law in the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Ontario were also exposed in July 2003 by researcher Dorothy Robinson in a paper peer reviewed by pediatrics.com.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite these failures, Ontario is in 2004 considering legislation for the mandatory wearing of helmets by cyclists of all ages. Read the viewpoint of the Hammer or the opinion of Connie Woodcock from the Toronto

You're going to have to look at youth helmets. That might be hard to find a helmet without a kiddy pattern on it.

Can anyone tell me the best place to get a youths dirt bike helmet?

Mrs E

Can I get one for like $50.00 or am I going to have to spend more? (I live in Michigan if that helps)

Answer
I would not let anyone wear a helmet that only cost $50 as your head is worth more than that.

Make sure you purchase new so you know the helmet has not had an impact and make sure you try them on and are helped by a salesman who knows how to fit helmets. It is one of the most important items that you have to purchase so don't scimp on it as your life is worth more than that.

My son has a rack of used helmets and only a few of them look damaged. But they have all had a major impact so are no longer used by him. It costs us a fortune but his head is worth it.

2. In the memo field of all your checks, write "for sensual massage."

3. Insist that your drive-through order is "to go."

4. Learn Morse code, and have conversations with friends in public consisting entirely of "Beeeep Bip Bip Beeeep Bip..."

5. If you have a glass eye, tap on it occasionally with your pen while talking to others.

6. Amuse yourself for endless hours by hooking a camcorder to your TV and then pointing it at the screen.

7. Speak only in a "robot" voice.

8. Push all the flat Lego pieces together tightly.

9. Start each meal by conspicuously licking all your food, and announce that this is so no one will "swipe your grub."

10. Leave the copy machine set to reduce 200%, extra dark, 17 inch paper, 99 copies.

11. Stomp on little plastic ketchup packets.

12. Sniff incessantly.

13. Leave your turn signal on for fifty miles.

14. Name your dog "Dog."

15. Insist on keeping your car windshield wipers running in all weather conditions "to keep them tuned up."

16. Reply to everything someone says with "that's what YOU think."

17. Claim that you must always wear a bicycle helmet as part of your "astronaut training."

18. Declare your apartment an independent nation, and sue your neighbors upstairs for "violating your airspace."

19. Forget the punchline to a long joke, but assure the listener it was a "real hoot."

20. Follow a few paces behind someone, spraying everything they touch with a can of Lysol.

21. Practice making fax and modem noises.

22. Highlight irrelevant information in scientific papers and copy them to your boss.

23. Make beeping noises when a large person backs up.

24. Invent nonsense computer jargon in conversations, and see if people play along to avoid the appearance of ignorance.

25. Erect an elaborate network of ropes in your backyard, and tell the neighbors you are a "spider person."

26. Finish all your sentences with the words "in accordance with prophesy."

27. Wear a special hip holster for your remote control.

28. Do not add any inflection to the end of your sentences, producing awkward silences with the impression that you'll be saying more at any moment.

29. Signal that a conversation is over by clamping your hands over your ears.

30. Disassemble your pen and "accidentally" flip the ink cartridge across the room.

31. Give a play-by-play account of a person's every action in a nasal Howard Cossell voice.

32. Holler random numbers while someone is counting.

What penalty would this provoke?

Q. If you didn't wear a bike helmet as the law was recently passed, what penalty happens? It states if you're under 18 and riding a bicycle, you need to wear a helmet. Idk if my parents are playing a joke because my kids haven't heard about it, and neither have my siblings.

Answer
It's not really a serious crime. Especially for someone under 18. You might just get a stern talking-to by the cop. You might get a ticket (which, of course, your parents would pay). Or the cop might just stop you and ask you if you knew you had to have a helmet. Some cops are very gentle with kids, others really hate kids. 8^)

If you were out cycling with your family, Mom and Dad and two or three kids, and nobody was wearing a helmet, the adults might get a ticket. They should know the law.

When I was 18 I got my first motorscooter. It had a rear-view mirror but it vibrated so badly that I couldn't see anything in it, so I just took it off. I got stopped by a California Highway Patrolman. He pulled me over, then he talked to me for about 10 minutes. I hadn't known I was required to have a mirror (working or not) and he was very kind and friendly. He didn't give me a ticket. He saw that I was a beginner and he gave me some safety tips, and actually he taught me a few things I didn't know. It was the beginning of the Summer and he said he hoped I would have a great Summer on my bike and be careful and safe. Then he got back in his car and left.

Is the 2012 W giant boulder mountain bike good for a beginner? I will be using it on roads and light trails?

I went to a bike shop and that was what the guy offered me. The total price for a helmet and the bike minus a discount would be $362. It seems like a good deal, but I'm not a bike aficionado so if anyone has any input that would be great! Thank you!
By "light trails" I mean the beginner activities...nothing that is actually on a mountain or a desert. I live in south florida so everything is pretty much flat. There are some mountain bike trails in local parks and I think it would be pretty neat to be able to ride them. Is the giant boulder mountain bike a good fit, or should I go with something else? My budget is pretty low. I don't want to spend more than $350 for a bike.

Answer
I would go with a comfort or hybrid bike instead. Mountain bikes suck on the road and not much better on hard packed bike paths. A Cypress or Suede would be better and more comfortable.

Why are bicycle helmets shaped the way they are?

bicycle helmets not effective on Blink Bike Helmet: Award-Winning Design to Keep Bikers Safe | Review ...
bicycle helmets not effective image

Rob G

The area they cover is only about 1-1/2% of your total frontal area. Motorcycles go much faster, and none of those are aerodynamically shaped. I've heard that you have to travel much faster than a bike is capable of, for the aerodynamics to be effective. For example a car has to travel in excess of 140mph for its' "wing" to have any effect. I know 1-1/2% is better than nothing, so why doesn't someone design some type of "body" air foil?

Answer
They have. They are called skinsuits, and all professional time trial riders use one. I think some have raised ridges sewed in, that delay air separation from the suit, thus reducing drag. Others use dimples in the fabric (same reason they put dimples in golf balls) that also delay air separation. In college, we had a lab that had a small wind tunnel and one of experiments was to test how much drag cold be reduced comparing a ping pong ball against the same ping pong ball modified with a small rubber band, and we found the band really did reduce drag even at slower air speeds.

What is the California state law on riding bikes with helmets?

thename's

In California, is it required by law to wear a helmet while riding within neighborhood zones only?
where can I find an online source that has more information on this?

Answer
Hey Thename,

Anyone under the age of 18 years of age has to wear a helmet while riding any bicycle, scooter, skates or skateboard on any PUBLIC roadway, highway, bicycle path or street. The key word is Public. If your neighborhood is located on a private roadway then the law does not apply on private land. Here is the California Vehicle Code section:

21212. (a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle, a nonmotorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway, as defined in Section 890.4 of the Streets and Highways Code, or any other public bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet that meets the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or standards subsequently established by those entities. This requirement also applies to a person who rides upon a bicycle while in a restraining seat that is attached to the bicycle or in a trailer towed by the bicycle.

(b) Any helmet sold or offered for sale for use by operators and passengers of bicycles, nonmotorized scooters, skateboards, or in-line or roller skates shall be conspicuously labeled in accordance with the standard described in subdivision (a) which shall constitute the manufacturer's certification that the helmet conforms to the applicable safety standards.

(c) No person shall sell, or offer for sale, for use by an operator or passenger of a bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, or in-line or roller skates any safety helmet which is not of a type meeting requirements established by this section.

(d) Any charge under this subdivision shall be dismissed when the person charged alleges in court, under oath, that the charge against the person is the first charge against that person under this subdivision, unless it is otherwise established in court that the charge is not the first charge against the person.

(e) Except as provided in subdivision (d), a violation of this section is an infraction punishable by a fine of not more than twenty-five dollars ($25).

The parent or legal guardian having control or custody of an unemancipated minor whose conduct violates this section shall be jointly and severally liable with the minor for the amount of the fine imposed pursuant to this subdivision.

(f) Notwithstanding Section 1463 of the Penal Code or any other provision of law, the fines collected for a violation of this section shall be allocated as follows:

(1) Seventy-two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall be deposited in a special account of the county health department, to be used for bicycle, nonmotorized scooter, skateboard, and in-line and roller skate safety education and for assisting low-income families in obtaining approved bicycle helmets for children under the age of 18 years, either on a loan or purchase basis. The county may contract for the implementation of this program, which, to the extent practicable, shall be operated in conjunction with the child passenger restraint program pursuant to Section 27360.

(2) Two and one-half percent of the amount collected shall be deposited in the county treasury to be used by the county to administer the program described in paragraph (1).

(3) If the violation occurred within a city, 25 percent of the amount collected shall be transferred to and deposited in the treasury of that city. If the violation occurred in an unincorporated area, this 25 percent shall be deposited and used pursuant to paragraph (1).

Added Ch. 1000, Stats. 1993. Effective January 1, 1994.
Amended Sec. 6, Ch. 674, Stats. 1996. Effective January 1, 1997.
Amended Sec. 1, Ch. 475, Stats. 2002. Effective January 1, 2003.

How do you turn left if you're riding in the bike lane?

best bike helmets for women on Racing Reward Women's V1 MotoX/Off-Road/Dirt Bike Motorcycle Helmet ...
best bike helmets for women image

:Sheila:

I don't ride a bike around because I feel it is dangerous. (Most places in my area do not have bike lanes.) What are the rules of bike lanes?

Answer
I've found that the bike lanes are nice when you're in them, but taking a left turn is a bit tricky. I just slow way down and keep looking behind me for an opening and as soon as there is one, I zoom over to the farthest left lane, stick out my arm and take a left.

Where I live the bike lanes are scattered and not very fluid. I generally try to ride on the side streets and trails, but at some point, I have to get on the main thorough ways. I should say that I don't ride my bike in major traffic like some people do, it's too risky. My town just had a horrible occurrence where a woman ran right over a group of cyclist in daylight. It was very sad.

As for the rules, the bike lane is there so the bikes have a good amount of space and a safe area to ride in. The rules are the rules that your local city/county has made for bicycling. For example, some places require a light at night or require a helmet. I know that when I read the book years and years ago, it said to ride your bike towards oncoming traffic so that they can see you, but I'm pretty sure that has changed.

What do you think are the best starter brands for street motorcycles, helmets, and protective gear?

rosato

I don't want to spend too much money, but I would also like to be able to depend on the bike and gear I buy for a while without having to immediately upgrade to something better. If you can help me out with some good suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Answer
Okay. I would buy a Ducati, if I were independantly wealthy, but I'm not. Ducati's have more, and more expensive REGULAR SCHEDULED service, than japanese bikes. If I could pay some one to do it I'd be happy to buy a performnce machine. I'd be happy to by a Buell or Harley Davidson if were independantly wealthy. But I'm not.

I would buy a Honda, or Kawasaki, a Yamaha, or Suzuki, pretty much interchangeably. Not the top of the line, like BMWs. But it doesn't cost as much in maintenance.

Now jackets and the like, if you are a common size in a motorcycle jacket, then Joe Rocket, or Alpinestar or CorTech the other brands are all about the same. Some brands have more cachet, than others, and they all sell 2 or three lines. So you got to get the features you want at a lower cost somehow. Buy at NewEnough.com. Look at and buy from the Close-OUTS. But I wear a 5XLT, and the usual run of the mill doesn't fit, so I have used an ordinary leather jacket (G2 flight jacket, goarskin), and the Bohn Armored shirt. If I could I'd buy a Vanson custom jacket. I can't, or a SCHOTT motorcycle jacket (think Marlin Brando in the movie role that made people scared of black leather jackets.)
I also use bohn armored riding (under)pants. If you are doing something where you have to change at work to look professional , buy a pair of OVER pants with zippers down the sides. These will keep slacks office safe and literally your backside in place and unground. Do NOT count on jeans unless they have kevlar fibers, pockets for knee/hip pads, and a wide belt loop. Now try to get a pair of pants that match up to the jacket if you can, since MOTORCYCLE JACKETS ZIP TO THE PANTS. and if both are the same maker you can be confidant they will hook up. Look for a jacket longer in the back than the front, and with sleeves shaped to extend you arms out front (like holding handlebars, and leaning forward over the tank). make sure collars snap down or velcro to the jacket . A collar can beat you to death, while you are riding.

Pants need extra length. Your legs will be folded somewhat on a motorcycle in riding position, so don't get them too short.

I do not buy Motorcycles boot that make me look like a power ranger, as much as I want to look like a japanese nightmare. Most of these things are just odd for the sake of oddness. I do buy over the ankle books for riding and if I can get side zippers I do, and steel toes too.

Be careful the weak point of many side zipper boots is the zipper pull. It makes sense that these would be harder to pull than your fly. So when the handle breaks or breaks off, you have to throw them away.
You'd think they used a good metal YKK zipper wouldn't you? They do not.

So go to the web and look for "Tactical" boots, and such like footwear, they will list every standard that these things meet. The hottest tip now is to buy a pair of boots with no metal in them to get through the airport without stopping to take your shoes off. I just do not go through the airport.

I tend to prefer THOROGOOD boots and Bates boots, these are cheap enough for my tastes. $100 when you hunt around for a particular model on the web. Bates makes a style that I really like, they are leather chukkah boots with a high polish, and a STRAP to secure them to your feet. they come in mens sizes and women's sizes and EXTRA WIDE sizes. I wear a triple E, so that's one problem solved. I also like the Thorogood Ultimate Crosstrainer, also in Extra wide. Buy what suits you. but they need to be capable of staying on your feet when you are bouncing merrily down the highway, as you are wont to do now and agan. I advise you to tie your shoes, or zip them up or latch the buckle or whatever you need to keep them on your feet. There are pictures of a guy that was wearing flip flops or something that weren't all that strong. His feet were ground down by the pavement, so you could see naked bones in his feet, probably 3 years of work for him to wear shoes again. STRINGS ARE A NO-NO on a motorcycle. Sooner or later they WILL come untied, and then flap in the breeze until you stop and try to put your foot down, and the strings get caught in the rear brake pedal or the shifter or just the footpegs.

Friends don't let friends wear shorts and t-shirts and flip flops to ride motorcycles.

I can here you say, doesn't it get hot in side all that stuff. Yes, it does. There are some things you can do to adapt, to the heat of Texas Summer, where the road surface is around 150 degrees, leaning over on your bike feels like putting you head in the oven.

Buy a couple of the ties you wear around your neck to work outdoors, these things use a product like a disposable diaper to make a cooling gel, that can hold water for hours. There are VESTs that do much the same thing, only there have removable cooling pads, some of them are VERY effective. Thanks to the soldiers, for the field testing in Afghanistan and Iraq. You can get some for 200 dollars or more, and this is the kind of thing I do not have yet, other than the necktie. So you are on your own. Look for Environmental Protection suits. wear MICROFIBER shirts, they will keep you cool and dry asd well as warm in winter. Wear wool socks, winter and summer, NOT COTTON. Wools drys and wicks moisture of your feet, cotton DOES NOT DRY EASILY, Try it, dump a load of socks in the dryer, cotton socks will be that last ones dry.

I also have a couple of towels made from a non-woven matereal, that also absorb water and release it slowly for cooling effects. These are commonly found sold at professional sports places or at the gym, or amazon.com has some.

That covers the the stuff that comes to mind. Any more Questions?

Does a 2011 Ninja 250r have a secure place to attach your helmet?

I know some bikes have a hook under the seat so you can attach the helmet and put the seat back on and you would need the key to get it out. Does anyone know if the 2011 Ninja 250r have this feature?

Answer
Yup. I gots a 2010 and it has two on either side under the passenger seat. Look it up on youtube, I know Rebelyell91 has a video explaining it.

What do I have to wear on a daily basis to ride my motorcycle?

ninjabot

I'm 19 in Alabama and I'm about to purchase a 2010 Kawasaki ninja 250. I have no experience on motorcycles and this will be my first bike. I have Already registered for an approved beginner class and gotten insurance quotes on owning it. I Am buying it as a cheap alternative to commute from class and work. I am wondering what gear i should buy along with the motorcycle that would be needed on a day to day basis.

Answer
Helmet. Helmets all protect the same. You pay more for features and comfort. I would get a full face or flip-up, because (not surprisingly) about half of impacts come from the front.

Jacket. Should be made specially for motorcycles. When you try it on you lean forward and put your arms out in front. A motorcycle jacket has sleeves a little longer and more room in the shoulders. Leather used to be king, for warmth, abrasion resistance, and because it doesn't flap in the wind. But now there are textiles that work just as well. For Summer you can get a 'mesh jacket' that the wind just goes right through.

Gloves. When (if) you fall, you instinctively put your hands out to stop yourself, so you want a layer of leather on the palms. There are mesh gloves for Summer too! In cooler weather you also need gloves to keep your hands warm.

Boots would be nice but I don't think they're essential. They protect your ankles. But you really need something substantial on your feet, a good pair of leather shoes, not flip-flops or crocs or something like that. Some kind of waffle rubber sole would be nice because you use your feet to hold the bike up at stops so you want to grip the ground well.

Some people insist you need overpants too, but I think they're just too much to hassle with. Jeans are fine.

You're not preparing for a big serious crash, just a spill. You'll hit some gravel or dead leaves in a curve and the bike will slide out from under you and deposit you relatively gently on the ground. Happens to everyone sooner or later. You learn to scan the surface ahead of you.

The most important thing is to be comfortable, not too cold or hot, in clothes that move with you.

What should I get/ do to become a mountain bike racer?

best sport bike helmet review image

pokerspade

I am an average novice bike rider. I want to know what I need to do to start training and eventually compete in mountain bike races. What kind of training and diet regiment should I follow? What kind of bike and helmet should I get? How do I even get into a race? I am looking for anyone who has experience in the sport who might be able to help an upstart wannabe racer make his dreams come true.

Answer
First off, I am sure you have a bike. But I am sure it's not 1. Fitted to you 2. Tuned 3. Has proper Components. If you want to race this summer the good news is you don't even need a bike right now. You need to be in the Gym 3-4 days a week taking Spinning classes, weight lifting on both legs and upper body and following a nutrition plan to skinny you up (yes Skinny riders are normally the fastest).

Bike, Ok so your now on your way to getting fit. That's good. But to race you need the right bike. Go to your best Local bike shop (check MTBR.com for review). And tell them your story, they will either outfit you with a better set up or take what you have and get it ready for racing..

Riding: MTB is not just about fitness or gear. But a lot about heart and finesse. I would find out from the shop were the last year races were, maybe there was a series that toured around your state. Then as soon as the weather is nice get out there and ride as much as you can, forget the Gym and just ride. It's a lot different then being on a stationary bike.

Once your comfy on the bike and all the trails (this is not as easy as you think). Make some friends that ride, again your shop is a good resource. and look into a good beginner race. This will get your feet wet with how it's done.

After you have raced a little the rest falls into place.. Good luck.

What is the best first motorbike for a girl used or new one?

Dolce

I am a new rider and had taken a rider course. I am planning on getting a sportsbike is this a good choice for me?Is used better or new one?

Answer
It is very important to really trust me when I give you this advice as you may regret your bike that you choose. So here is the proper way to choose a bike.

First, start by analyzing and really thinking and predicting how you will be riding it. In other words what percentage of time will you be on freeways and what percentage of time on the streets.

This is very, very important and here is why.

A light bike is not fun to ride on the freeways and a heavy bike is not really as fun to ride on streets. So most folks get a bike that is best for their situation.

If you get a light bike (light is 300+lbs or so) and you go on the freeways going 70mph it is scary as hell because the winds blow you all over. See helmet cam videos below to get an idea how strong the winds are.

So if you take this advice you'll be loving life. If you don't, you'll be kicking yourself later. Take it from someone who also passed the msf course and make the mistake of getting a light bike for freeways....no fun.

So here are the best bikes "for the money" and reliability. I also list for which purpose.

The Kawasaki Ninja 250 used around $2000 or less see craigslist or ebay. The ninja 250 is a nice sport bike designed for the beginner yet it can hit speeds of 80+ and faster than most cars off the line. However on freeways its so light it blows around a lot so this is a good bike for streets.

This bike is the Gasoline camel! it is awesome at saving gas and you can go over 200miles before even needing to look for a gas station. Very reliable and cheap maintence. I started with this.

Now...if you plan on riding freeways don't you dare get a bike that is 250cc or 500cc you have to really have 600cc or more. Some new riders (like me when I started) think that a 600cc bike is going to shoot out from under them at the slightest twitch of the wrist and this is just not true.

So remember for streets 250 or 500cc is fine but not for freeways. You won't feel safe and in fact I have never been more fearful of death then when riding a ninja 250 on the freeway.

Streets however its awesome and light and very easy to ride.

For freeways you need 2 things. A bike that is at least 600cc and also a weight of over 400lbs. 400lbs is light when you are going 60 or 70 mph TRUST ME you want all the weight you can on a bike going this speed.

For the money a good used bike for the freeways is a Suzuki Katana 600 or 750cc They are about 500lbs but remember you sit on the bike so its not like you have to hold it up or it will fall as when you have the bike straight up at a light the weight is on the wheels and when you get on the freeway you will be thanking God for the weight.

If you don't want to get a bike that is 500lbs I understand and respect that cautiousness so I would then get a suzuki sv 650 which is about $3000-$4000 used and are great on freeways also.

Here are the bikes I would look at and btw the cheapest place to find bikes are not at the dealer or newspaper but on craigslist below. To use craigs to check out whats out there go to the site and click your STATE then a city near you, then click motorcycles to see photos and prices.

LIST OF BIKES THAT ARE MOST INEXPENSIVE
NINJA 250 BY KAWASAKI If you rarely will go freeway
NINJA 500 BY KAWASAKI If you will go freeways now and then
Suzuki Katana either 600cc or 750cc if you will go freeways often
Suzuki Sv 650 if you will go freeways often but its a light bike but the power is good on freeways.

All these bikes are good for beginners. Don't listen to this hogwash of how you should start off on a 250 or 500 cc as new because if you are going on freeways I can prove all day long that in fact, it is more dangerous to be on the freeway on a 250cc bike than a 600cc bike or higher cc bike.

I also have put a review on the ninja 250 below for your reading pleasure.

Is it illegal in the UK to ride a motorbike without leathers or a helmet on?

best cycling helmets uk on ... Tempor, TT, Helmet, Time Trial, Olympics, 2012, London, Sweden, Helmet
best cycling helmets uk image

Jad-Aiy

What if your riding on the back of one?
Thanks

Answer
No. However, it is illegal to ride a motorbike or to be a pillion passenger on a motorbike on the public highway without one

helmet must either

*comply with British Standard BS 6658:1985 and carry the BSI kitemark or
*comply with UNECE Regulation 22.05 or
*comply with any standard accepted by a member of the European Economic Area which offers a level of safety and protection equivalent to BS 6658:1985 and carry a mark equivalent to the BSI kitemark

In accordance with the Motor-Cycle Crash Helmets (Religious Exemption) Act 1976, Section 2A "...exempts any follower of the Sikh religion while he is wearing a turban" from having to wear a crash helmet.

Also, if you're in a sidecar, you're not legally required to wear a helmet

There is no legal requirement to wear any specific type of clothing other than the helmet, however, obviously the more inappropriate your clothing, the more you're risking your life. Personally, it vexes me to see people even if only on a moped, not suitably attired, and to me that means full leathers with the appropriate supports (back etc), proper boots and gloves.

Netherlands riding motor scooters on the pavement?

Joan A

my dad watches a web cam at http://www.railcam.nl/ He is fascinated along with the pedestrians the elderly there are scooters and motor cycles riding on the pavement. Some not even wearing Crash helmets . Can anyone explain this to me. It would not happen here in UK.

Answer
In NL you can ride a bromfiets (moped) on the fietspad (bicycle path), which is separate from the pedestrian walkway. Bromfiets are typically 50cc and limited to 50kph or less. Scooters with more power would ride in the street with traffic.

How can I avoid getting helmet hair when riding my moped?

Crazy fun

I am a girl obviously and often love to straighten it, scrunch it, curl it, I'm very girly when it comes to stuff like that. Is there a technique I can use to keep my hair nice ? perhaps a bandana?

Girls that ride bikes, motorcycles, mopeds and wear a helmet? Advice? :)

Thanks!!!

Answer
I am female, with long hair and usually curled on top. When I ride, I carry a headband, and pull my hair back after I get where I am going. Since I love to ride my bike to work, but have to look somewhat presentable, this is the best solution I have come up with. Every one knows in the summer whether I rode my bike or not by my hairstyle. But I would rather ride than curl my hair!

Go to a well-stocked place like a Performance Bike Shop. You should be able to find one that fits you among all the different brands and models that they carry. Unfortunately, it may not be one of the less expensive ones. Still, spend the money. Your head is worth it.

HTH

which is the best aero helmet?

Hugo

hello, i would like to buy an aero helmet but idk which one is the best for 70.3 and full ironmans....
the money is not a problem, i just want to know which one is the best and why?
i saw a few ones: Giro-Selector, Lazer-Tardiz, Rudy Project- Wingspan, bell-jevelin, etc. be free to share your experience
thanks

Answer
Some of the manufacturers have round helmets some are oval. It is very important to find which fits your head best. Giro and Bell will fit the same as they are made by the same company and seem to be more oval (as most people are). Lazer seems to fit a rounder head shape well. Rudy Project fits smaller sizes.

Once you are in an aero position on a TT bike your head is the largest least aerodynamic part of your body so there is a speed benefit to an aero helmet. $300 worth? I'm not convinced enough of that to buy a new helmet at that price. It seems those that can afford a $6000 (and up) TT bike have no problem with buying the helmet.

The Rudy Project has the most venting. The Lazer Tardiz is very aero as is the Bell. The Giro is a tad less then the Bell -- According to Bicycling Magazine. I like the golf ball dimples.

If you aren't riding a TT bike forget the aero helmet because even with clamp on aero bars you won't be in the proper riding position to gain aero benefits. For half the price of one of these you can get a very lightweight, 70% as aero, equal cranium protection helmet.

Don't forget the visor. Sometimes the visor is extra. Get a clear visor and use glasses for the lighting conditions. The visor is part of the aero performance.

Shop used! As long as you try it on first you can't go wrong. Look at the year of manufacture on a sticker inside and don't buy one 5 years old. Inspect a used helmet carefully for any signs of impact damage -- a skuff that won't rub off, a dent in the styro foam inside, gouges or scratches. Don't buy a helmet you suspect has taken an impact. If you find one used it should be 1/3 to 1/2 price.

What is the history envolving the use of bikers using duct tape as protectors?

Mad About

I'm not taling about outlaw bikers, though it might have started with them. I recently ran across a photo of Brandon Lee and his bike, and he had duct tape on his boots and on his hands. And I just wondered where that originated.

Answer
Cyclists sometimes use duct tape to keep out wind and cold by wrapping their feet and covering their helmet vents. Some also use it to help secure worn out velcro or shoe closures. I have no idea why anyone on a motorcycle would put it on their feet or hands, unless they got caught out with no boots or gloves and the tape was all they could find. But I suspect Brandon Lee has enough disposable cash to make sure that stuff is always available.

Can skateboard helmets be used for inline skate helmets?

Scrumdiliu

I know that there is a difference between bicycle helmets, skating helmets, skateboard helmets, and snowboarding helmets but I was wondering if skateboard helmets and skate helmets could be used as the same?

I am a new skater and I think it would be idea if I get skate pads, etc.

Also do you recommend a brand? I was looking at Walmart and they seemed pretty safe.

Answer
There are two types of helmets: Bicycle and Multisport.
The names don't really describe the differences but are based on history of their development.

Bicycle helmets are lighter and usually have more air vents to keep you cool. They are usually more aerodynamically shaped. They are designed for the types of accident you get while moving forward and are good for rec/fitness/race skating.

Multisport helmets are designed for protection when there is more risk of hitting the back of your head such as skateboarding or doing tricks on skates or bikes.
They tend to be hotter because of lack of vents. They are tend to have a round shape and cover the back and sides of the head. The lining is made to protect if you hit another object on the way down (like a rail for grinding).

All helmets are only designed for one hard hit. They may not appear to be damaged but they may not protect well against a second hit.

For your skates, get the helmet appropriate for the type of skating you will be doing.

This goes for your pads also. The pads for aggressive and freestyle skating are thicker and cover more area than for rec/fitness/race skating.

For rec/fitness/racing skating, wrist guards are really important. You will almost always slide on your hands. However, I wear aggressive glove style wrist guards because they cover more skin in order to keep it intact.
Knee pads are more optional for "straight ahead" skating. When (not if) you fall, you should be sliding instead of falling straight down. The pads keep the skin from being scraped up. I have found that the scrapes are just below the knee and not just in the area that the pads cover. However, scrapes there heal faster and are not as painful while healing than ones on your hand. Tegaderm is a wonderful way to cover this kind of scrape. It keeps it moist so that you don't have the pain that happens when dry scabs crack and peal. It also is waterproof, can stay on for a week, and can cover large areas.
I have yet to know anyone who has significantly scraped up an elbow in straight ahead skating.

c_schumack

I am looking through a bicycling catalog and the prices range from $25 to over $150 for bicycling helmets. I would assume they all have to meet guidelines for protecting your head - surely the more expensive ones will not protect it 5 times better. There seems to be a thing about the number of air vents. I notice the weight between them all is nearly the same. Other than air vents, what advantages would I notice as a user if I went with a mid priced helmet over the cheapest helmet?

Answer
Weight, venting, and marketing make up the biggest differences in the cost of helmets. Helmets must meet the same standards, so the function of all the helmets is presumably equivalent. However, one way that manufacturers make some models less is expensive is to make less sizes. For example, using 2 molds instead of 3 saves the company development, manufacturing, and distribution costs, but it means less size options for you to get a helmet that fits well.

When it comes to comfort and safety, a good fit is the most important factor. More expensive helmets tend to come in a larger variety of sizes with more control over chin strap and back-of-the-head adjustments. I have found helmets with tensioning systems on the back of the helmet to be the most comfortable and to have the most secure fit.

Definitely go to a bike shop with lots of models and sizes in stock, and then try on a wide variety of options to see what fits your head and your wallet best.

How much speed will I lose on average if I wear a bicycle helmet? So far I average about 35km/h without one?

POPEYE P

Making your head bigger I assume there is more air resistence that will cause drag reducing my speed. I'm planning on buying a helmet this month because I do a lot of dangerous night riding.

Answer

Lets see the pros wear one on every ride. And , they care about 10ths of seconds per ride. It actually should make you faster. While it is bigger the curved symmetrical shape should be more aero. But, lets face any speed gained or lost is insignificant relative to the safety issue.

I try to avoid dark areas or shortcuts. And yes I am street smart too. Any advice? Please no stupid answers. Thanks guys.

Answer
There are several different things you need to be doing.
* Research bike and other laws in your area, so that no solution inadvertently violates some rule
** you might stop by a police station & ask for suggestions as to what is legal, not legal, common mistakes other people in your situation make that you can avoid with their advice
* Make sure cars can see you from a distance
* Protect yourself from spills and scrapes
* Protect yourself trom monsters & trolls

Cars see you
==========
You should be wearing light colored clothing
You should have a light colored safety helmet
You need to have reflectors or rear light

It does not hurt to have extra reflectors
I have seen pedestrians with reflectors on their shoes
I have seen bikers with reflectors on their clothing

Protection from accidents

Safety helmet
Goggles ... so insects do not fly into your eyes, dust also
Long sleeves, and cover your legs ... so if there is a fall, your body is muffled from scrapes and scratches

Years ago, I was on a motor scooter, went around a curve too fast, skidded, and my body fell onto gravel ... o o o o o h h

Protection from monsters and trolls

If there is someone normally home about the time you get home ... you might want to phone them right before you leave work, have them know the route you travel, so if you not get home wihin an hour, they could come looking for you

or from the other end ... a friendly co-worker ... if you & they leave about same time & if they about same distance from their home in travel time ... you call each other after you get home "I'm Ok" If no call, friends try to check up on each other

What is a good beginner road motorcycle?

Double Cen

I need to be able to ride on the freeways, but not have TOO much power. This will be my first motorcycle. Otherwise I ride a road bicycle. I have a budget of up to 4000 dollars, but that includes clothing and helmet. Something that will be cheap to maintain and user-friendly. Thanks.

Answer
My choice would be a Honda Shadow. If you do some research you'll notice that almost everyone agrees that Hondas are the most user friendly motorcycles. They are very easy to ride. As for maintenance, a Honda will run forever. They're very reliable. Those courier guys use Hondas for some reason.
