I've just started biking.. and my helmet looks really big on my body, I'm not big.. 5'8. So.. do the external dimensions of helmets vary? would a more expensive helmet made from more sophisticated materials be smaller in external dimensions? or are they much the same?

Answer
Helmets do vary in external dimensions according to brand, though it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with quality.

If you're looking for something smaller, check out Scorpion helmets, they seem to be a little slimmer than some others.

How to pack for a 5 day motorcycle trip?

momof3brat

I am going on a motorcycle trip for 5 days, I need to know the most efficient way to pack. What do I take for 5 days to cover all types of weather?

Answer
It is easier to have too much clothes on and shed them as the day goes along, than to start out with too little and have to stop and get more clothes. Layers for warmth, with an outer shell that resists wind. You might to buy a rain suit; they are pretty wind impervious, but not warm. Don't even think about a poncho; not safe. Go for bright, safe colors. Get a shirt that breathes but protects you from sun, if it might get hot.

A tool kit. Chain lube. Hand cleaner. A few spare parts like an inner tube, some fuses, spark plugs, light bulbs, clutch and brake cables. Think about how it will effect your trip to break down and not be able to find any open bike shops.

Chapstick, sunblock, stuff to prevent and treat windburn. Sinus medicine, if dust bothers you. Eye drops ditto.

Go for packs and boxes that you can get into with removing stuff from on top of it or unfastening a bunch of bungee. Think saddle bags, a big backpack that you can get into all the compartments without moving or removing any luggage.

If you are solo, a big soft bag of stuff (sleeping bag?) on the passenger seat gives you a back rest.

Something lightweight and aerodynamic can be strapped to the front fork, right over the fender. Pack all heavy items low, to keep your center of gravity low. Heavy things higher than the seat will make you very unstable.

Protective gear: helmet, eye protection included sun protection, gloves, boots. Comfortable shoes as an alternative to your boots when not riding.

A small tarp. Sit on it, shelter under it from sun or rain, unpack your gear and clothing on it to keep them out of the dirt ... trust me on this one.

A water jug. You don't want to buy a soda every time you feel thirsty.

A clear map case, and a small waterproof flashlight. A lighted magnifier is a plus. A water proof box, like from a marine supply or diving supply shop, to keep a few valuables really, really dry; it is worth $25 to protect your $400 camera.
