it's dark blue with Melbourne sprawled on the side. even the shape is unflattering for my head.

Can I spray paint it like I do with wooden objects?



It is unfortunate that Melbourne has utterly weird laws that require a cyclist to wear a helmet.

Don't paint it (It will damage it). Assuming it's legitimate helmet that meets safety standards dress it up with a funny helmet cover (See the link for some ideas scattered in among some pretty lame ones). If it's not in good shape, replace it.

The laws are NOT weird they could save you from serious injury or death. I know I'm alive to day (or at least not a brain dead vegetable) because I was wearing a helmet when I got cut off by a truck years ago.

Besides the obvious head protection, I would guess that a rider contending with a headwind would be more aerodynamic than one without a helmet. Will that mean a hill of beans if you are not against the clock? No. So, I guess everything goes back to safety.
