I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle (Ninja 250r) and need to know what gear I should be looking at. I was thinking a helmet, gloves, and a jacket? Will I be okay just wearing jeans and tennis shoes? What brands should I look at?

Answer
You need at least a helmet, jacket and gloves. All should be motorcycle-specific.

The helmet should be comfortable and a good fit. ALL helmets do about the same job of protection, you pay more for comfort and features. Also, since about half of helmet impacts come from the front, a full-face helmet provides a lot more protection.

The jacket is partly to keep you warm in the wind but also for abrasion resistance if you fall. Leather used to be considered best, but now there are textiles with the same abrasion resistance. For warmer weather you can get a 'mesh' jacket that protects like leather, but the wind goes right through it! I have one and I love it. You can zip a liner inside it when it gets cold, and you can put a sweater under that and be really warm.

Don't underestimate the importance of gloves. If you fall, you instinctively put your hands out, so you want gloves with leather palms.

If you're really going to get serious about riding, it might be nice to have pants too, and boots. But I don't think they're completely necessary. Tennis shoes are not a good idea, though, you want at least leather shoes. Some kind of boots that cover your ankles would be better.

Jeans are fine. You can get pants made just for motorcycles that have more abrasion resistance. One kind is called Draggin' Jeans, they look just like regular jeans but have a layer of kevlar in them. There are also some nice pants made for Highway Patrol officers that look like slacks but have iron in them or something.

When you're first starting out, the accidents you're most likely to have are low-speed accidents. You lose control of the bike in a parking lot and it falls over. Or you're going around a curve at 20 mph and you hit some gravel or something and the bike slides out from under you. It's very much like falling from a bicycle. So you really only want to protect yourself from getting banged up and scratched up.

There's a website I always go to first when looking for M/C gear. It's newenough.com. They have last year's models, overstocks, discontinued stuff, very good prices. And they're very good about taking it back if you don't like it.

But for a helmet you really should go to a store and try them on. Different brands are shaped for different-shaped heads, and the wrong shape can be really uncomfortable. Plus I find that in some brands I take a L and in some I need an XL.

Cheap Motorcycle equipment in Japan's Kanto area?

I'm looking to buy a helmet, boots, and gloves to go with my new bike. I actually take rather large sizes too: about an XL helmet and size 10-11 (28-30 cm) boots. I live in south Ibaraki prefecture, and I can easily get around both in my car and on the train. Can anyone suggest a shop that sells good motorcycle equipment without it costing half the price of my bike?

Answer
the area to the east (and slightly north) of Ueno Station in Tokyo specializes in such material, but you could match the prices with a motorcycle goods store in your city. ask at your local koban for directions.
