"What is your opinion? Do they even do any good? MAYBE for "professional" bike racers, etc., but for adults in general, I just want to knock them off peoples' heads. I can understand maybe for kids (but even then I find them ridiculous), but, man the helmets, the outfits, etc. "Back in the day" we rode our bikes, and if we fell, we scraped our hands, elbows, knees, etc., and rarely did we hit our heads. We had enough sense to throw our limbs out if we fell in order to absorb the impact. I know I sound like an old fuddy-duddy, but really, do people even need them?"

The helmets are ugly, but they are there for protection. It should be your own choice weather or not to wear one, and I think they really need to come up with a better, more serious look to them. Motorcycle helmets don't look dorky to me, and I think they should build them a bit more like that. I've never worn a protective helmet, not only because they're dorky but because I just figure I don't need one. I've had bike accidents involving smashing my head into the pavement but it doesn't SEEM to have left any lasting damage. =P

Why do bicycle helmets look so uncool when you are just casually riding?

Like i get why people wear them on high speed bike races, or on big 15 mile rides.
And I do care about safety and stuff,

but why do helmets just look so darn uncool when riding around the neighborhood?

You know what like gets to me? Like when someone starts a sentence with "like". Like hey man...if you think 15 miles is a "big ride" - like you've got a lot to learn about cycling & the distances a good cyclist can cover.

Like in my neighborhood - it looks dorky for anyone not to be wearing one. Like a full forty-five percent of all cycling accidents are "solo falls" - no one else involved. Like, only 18% involve a motor vehicle, 17% involve another bicycle. Even 4% involve running into a parked car!

Like...get it now man?

I want to get a new bicycle to ride recreationally. I will only be riding on neighborhood roads and at parks. I will not use it as a mean of transportation or on public roads.

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

My son recently started a project and he wanted to fiberglass it and then Bondo it. Any tips and tricks?

He is building something similar to the Iron Man helmet.

Answer
A multi-step process. For an extremely close fit, he could make a plaster mask of his own head, which he could then pad out a bit to provide some clearance, and then lay up fiberglass over that and start adding Bondo for sculpting features. When he's done scultpting he can add bicycle helmet padding inside the mask to take up the clearance he built in, help keep it very still on his head.

NOTE: add some extra clearance below the chin so he can move his mouth to talk with the helmet on.

Lots of YouTube vids on how to make a plaster cast of your head, check 'em out. They'll show the process better than I can write it.

All the freshmen at my high school were given really horrible looking hats they had to wear everyday for a week at school. Each freshmen had a senior sister (I went to an all girls high school). Thank GOD my Senior sister was nice. She made me probably the best looking hat of all of them. One girl had to wear a bicycle helmet with burnt popcorn glued all over the top LOL!! IT WAS HILARIOUS. That helmet stunk though haha.
