Dirt bike helmet for motorcycle?

Skychan

I'm a casual dirt biker (though I have a proper MX dirt bike: 03 yamaha YZ 125) and I'm buying a motorcycle this spring. I've been told it's perfectly fine to use my dirt bike helmet (DOT approved).

Only I got wondering about wind resistance... At top speed of about 100km/h I feel a good amount of wind resistance when I turn my head sideways on the yamaha but I'm wondering if that might cause too much fatigue doing that on the highway at 120km/h while constantly checking the traffic.

I'm just wondering if a full faced motorcycle helmet might offer a noticeable decrease in wind resistance to prevent neck fatigue. I can't remember how annoying it was on my dirt bike.

Answer
Although a dirt bike helmet may be DOT approved, it should not be worn as a street bike helmet. Certainly, any helmet is better than none, but....I can only stress the importance of an actual street bike helmet. Street helmets are designed for a different type of impact. They offer much more face protection and eye protection.
A D.O.T. helmet criteria means that if it is dropped at a height of 6 feet and it doesn't crack...you have a DOT approval....great.....helmets not cracked, but your brain is a puddle of chocolate pudding. A snell helmet is also another type rating...does the same thing.
Buy a real helmet...a good brand name...spend more than $50 bucks. There are good helmets that are affordable. If you cannot afford this type of helmet, I understand, I'm not rich myself and can only afford what I can afford.
I work for a bike shop and I can tell you this..A NEW helmet in a box that is 5 yrs old is no good and has to be destroyed. We cannot sell them. There is a code in the helmet under the liner that will show you the date. Do not buy a helmet that is too near the 5 yr mark. This is when helmets go on sale at dealers. A 4 yr old helmet (new) maybe a good discount and still relatively safe, and affordable. You will get much less wind noise and fatigue with a street bike helmet.
Good luck...ride on....rubber side down..

Is Giro the best Name brand for a mountain bike helmet. Is the Remedy the best model?

I know that there is a CF model and i was meaning both the Remedy CF and the the plain Remedy.

Answer
It's true...the best helmet brand is the one that is at your budget, is certified by the industry , and (sorry for being a bit vain) a helmet that makes you look good in (or at least give you the illusion that you do). To me all recognized helmet brands are ALL protective and are made with pretty much the same materials. But the Remedy looks good. Cheers!

I'm planning to buy a mountain bike tomorrow. Which brand is recommended?

Answer
Go to you local bike shop or shops if you have more than one. Chose a bike that fits you best. Do this by riding many different bikes and getting a feel for them. One will stand out as better riding. This is your bike.
The big difference between many models is the frame. Most of the components will be of similar quality for a price point, but frames and how the fit you are the real deal. Don't try just one, try several before making a final decision.
Good brands to try out are Giant, Fuji, Canondale, Specialized, Bianchi, Trek, Gary Fisher, and a few other smaller brands too.
Last, don't forget a properly fitting helmet. It's cheap insurance.

how much will it cost to outfit a new dirt bike rider not including bike?

I am doing preliminary research to find out how much I will need to spend on riding gear like pants, boots, helmet, etc. In my late 20's average height, weight, build. I will be riding trails, strictly off-road. Also, are there any great online companies that offer great deals or discounts on new gear? Thanks in advance!

Answer
The link below has all of the gear you'll need, at least for pricing. They and other on line sources have some form of discount and occasionally have "sales" with very discounted prices.

Here is a basic list of what you'll need listed by priority.
Off road helmet
Gloves
Off road road boots
Goggles
mx/off road pants
Riding jersey
Foul weather jacket

There are tons of other stuff you could get like different gloves for different weather conditions, socks made for dirt bike riding, shin guards and body armor, .... the list goes on. For what I have in the list above you could spend $600 to $2000 USD depending the brand and model of each item you choose.

Also you don't have to buy it all at once. If you allready have some heavy boots you could use those until you find proper ones you like on sale. I rode in denim jeans for years before I bought a pair of off road pants, but you see the point.

I really want a kawasaki bike, its my favorite type, but I heard honda is the better brand and is more reliable, is this true? What CC dirt bike would be good for me?Ive never ridden before and I'm growing. What gear would I need? What are good brands for the gear I need? Is thor a good helmet brand? About how much would all this cost me? Sorry for all the questions but I really would like to know the answers, thanks.

Answer
Kawasaki's are good bikes, I have owned dozens of them, matter of fact - I own one right now.

Honda's are extremely reliable - if you are talking about their road bikes or the older XL/XR series, yes that statement would be true.

Do you plan on just riding, racing or both?

If you plan on just riding a 150cc 4-stroke (or similar sized engine) would be good for you.
If you plan on racing, then you will need a 85cc 2-stroke.

All modern motocross bikes are about equal, you can do a search for the latest "shootout".

Gear: SNELL approved helmet, goggles, long sleeve shirt, long pants and riding boots are the minimum you will need. Gloves, padded riding jersey, shoulder pads with chest protector and armored riding pants are additional that are not required, but highly recommend.

If you can afford new gear, by all means buy it. If you cannot, you have several options.
Used bikes: Ebay, Craigslist, BikeFinds and CycleTrader.
Used gear: Ebay, Craigsllist, flea markets and yard sales.

Bare minimum you will need $500 for a used bike and used gear. I have purchased used bikes off of Ebay and Craigslist for under $500. I have purchased boots at garage sales for $25. If you look hard and long enough, you will find what you need at very reasonable prices. It might not be the latest, greatest and new, but it will get done what you need done. Example: new Alpinestar boots - $375. Yard sale Thor boots - $25. Brand new Honda CRF 100R - $2,800. 1998 Honda XR100 - $350 Craigslist.

The best helmets are Arai and Shoei, but you won't be able to afford them on your budget. Look at HJC. They have new SNELL approved helmets at under $150.

Good luck and have fun

Does anyone know anything about helmet cameras?

I want to purchase a helmet camera for my boyfriend. He would use it for downhill mountain biking in the summer and snowboarding in the winter, so it needs to be able to attach to different style helmets. Any information on helmet cameras, brands, prices and stores where i could find them, would be much appreciated!
