How to get started with dirt biking?

Nick

I'm 15 years old and i was interested in this since i heard about it the first time (I was about 7 years old) but i never really learned anything about this sport so now i'm trying to look up some information about it. I live in Holland and never really rode a motorcycle before and i think its hard to ride a dirt bike too but i really like it and i'm interested so i want to know how to get started or what do i need for it.

Any information will help and thank you.

Answer
Welcome to the sport.

Your first decision will be 2-stroke or 4-stroke. 4-strokes are easier to learn on, go longer in between maintenance and there are a lot more new motorcycles to choose from. 2-strokes are racing engines. The produce more power and torque than a 4-stroke of the same size, are lighter and cheaper to rebuild, but there are only three manufacturers that make new ones. If you look for a new 2-stroke over 85cc's - Yamaha, Husqvarna and KTM.

Go down to the local dealerships and sit on a bunch of different makes and models to see what fits you best, then try to locate a used bike.

You can save thousands of dollars purchasing used. The money you save can be used to purchase riding gear, tools, oil, fuel, etc. You can purchase used bikes on Ebay, Craigslist, BikeFinds and CycleTrader. By you living outside the US, you may not have access to these used motorcycle sites, but I am sure that there must be some equivalent that you will have access too.

I recommend a used bike first for first timers because you are going to crash. So, purchasing a used bike that is scratched and faded won't really matter to you. You are only interested in if the bike runs and rides good.

I also recommend used gear to first timers also. You are just going to tear the stuff up anyway, so used stuff won't really matter. In the states we can go to yard sales, garage sales, flea markets, Ebay and Craigslist to locate used riding gear. The only item of gear you should not buy used is a helmet. Get a new SNELL approved helmet. There are things you can save money on and then there are things where you just have to pay and a helmet is one of them. HJC makes SNELL approved helmets that are reasonably priced.

Once you get a bike and gear, you then need a place to ride. If your parents own a lot of property, you can just ride there, if they do not, you will have to locate a place where you can ride. Check with the local motorcycle shops and your buddies at school that ride. They should be able to locate some riding areas for you.

Good luck, have fun and welcome to the sport.

How can I take my 6 month old on a bike ride?

RilYnn

I have a Bell Bike Trailer, It has a five point safety harness, and she can hold her head up perfect. My question is is it safe for her to use it yet, and what should i do about a helmet? The smallest I have seen is 3+ years, do they make them smaller? Where can I get one if I need it? All Answers appreciated! THANKS!
The babk carriers are for 12mo. and up, but I cant even find a helmet for a 12mo old :(

Answer
I wanted to take my baby out biking, too. But even if a six month old can hold her head up well, it might be really difficult to maintain that with a bike helmet. If she sleeps while riding--and she probably would--her head will tip over and strain her neck as the bike bounces around. If there were an accident, her skull is not fused and her head is still soft in places, so a helmet might not offer as much protection as you might hope. Long story short, it's just not a good idea. They need to be a little older, unfortunately. I hated it, too, but it is probably best to wait. It won't be that long. We probably waiting until age two, which was forever but not really that long. And now my five-year-old has been riding around with me for three and a half years!

I do wish I had a different answer.

My son has been been riding a pedal bike without training wheels since he was three. He has a Honda PW50. We have a helmet and riding pants although the riding pants are getting small as well as elbow pads and shin guards. At this point he is not out riding on trails mostly around the dirt and gravel parking lot or fields. He wore down the rubber on a pair of boots this last weekend they were not riding boots.

What kind of yo-yo would be good for my 9 year old son to begin with?

Dan Sheppa

Just starting out. Seems interested, but don't want to spend to much. Any ideas?? Looking for a 10-30 dollar option. Thanks.

Answer
Don't go with a Duncan Butterfly or Duncan imperial--they will only slow down his learning curve. That said their are many fine yo-yo's in this price range. I have over 50 yo-yos and I've never spent more than $30.

If you have a Meijer store nearby start with a Duncan Limelight. It's got a wooden axel (fixed) but it comes apart so stuck string can be removed and the axel is replaceable. It's $6 at Meijer. Of course you can also find it online.

My second reccomendation is the Duncan complete yo-yo kit. You can only order it online. But for the price you get two great yo-yos. http://www.yo-yo.com/product_det.asp?ID=98 You will need to get extra friction stickers (makes the yo-yo return) and I always reccomend extra string. Yes, I know this kit has three yo-yo's, but I think the reflex is little better than a butterfly or imperial.

Duncan Freehand Zero is a slightly smaller yo-yo than the Freehand included in the above kit. I actually prefer it's size. It might be a better fit for a smaller hand of a 9-yo.

Yomega has numerous find yo-yo's. Some come with the Yomega Mania DVD. This is a great learning tool. In the past few months I purchased a Yomega Hot Shot and Xodus II that had the DVD. The Xodus is probably not the right yo-yo for you son. The Hot Shot is propably too advanced, but with some practice he could probably master it pretty quickly. The Sabre Raider if you can get it with the DVD is also a great choice, though if he gets really good, he might outgrow it in six-months.

If you have a Toys R Us nearby, they have a pretty good selection. My local Toys R Us carries the Duncan metal drifter, the Yomega Xodus II, Yomega Fireball (looping yo-yo), pocket pros (they've got ones with spiders in them). The Drifter is advanced, but with some work he should be able to master it.

Two online yo-yo stores I'd reccomend are http://www.yoyoguy.com The 1-800 number is on the top of every page and they respond within one business day if you e-mail them with questions. http://www.yoyonation They also have great customer service and can answer your questions.

Yo-yo factory, Yo-yo jam also have a great selection of yo-yo's, I just don't have as many of them and I primarily throw Duncans and Yomegas.

I bought my nephews yo-yo's for Christmas a couple years ago--I got them each a Duncan Freehand Zero and a Duncan ProFire. Though this was before the Limelight came out. Still the ProFire is a good looping yo-yo.

Finally get extra string. Yo-yo guy has the best prices on strings.

Let me put these ramblings together
Duncan Complete yoyo kit.
Duncan Freehand Zero
Duncan Limelight
Duncan ProFire
Yomega Hot Shot
Yomega Sabre Raider
Duncan Metal Drifter
Pocket Pros Stinger (I can't remember the names of the other two they have with spiders in them) You may be able to find this at K-mart, BUT believe it or not I found them near the bike helmets.

Hope this helps a bit.
