Answer
someone on a bicycle with no head. It's the only valid excuse to not wear a helmet...

Is riding with a helmet more dangerous than not wearing one?

gushie_got

I have this friend who believes that wearing a bicycle helmet is actually MORE dangerous than not wearing one. She believes that in a crash the helmet can cause the back of your neck to snap and even break. Is this true? Is actually wearing a bicycle helmet more dangerous than not wearing one

Answer
I have more than one friend whose life was saved due to wearing a helmet. Not wearing a helmet is just stupid. You've got to protect your brain... first and foremost.

Maybe her helmet doesn't fit her properly.

BTW - I don't know of anyone breaking their neck from a helmet, but plenty of people who were glad they were wearing one when they crashed.

Do Bike Helmets Save Lives; Or Do They Hurt Cycling?

Q. -- some think bicycle helmets discourage people from riding bikes --
http://planetgreen.discovery.com/tech-transport/do-bike-helmets-save-lives-or-do-they-hurt-cycling.html
It's tedious nerdy to have to carry with you, along with special clothing and shoes.
One time I was on a group ride. I came down a hill, approaching a place where I would make a left turn. At that corner some ahead of me had wiped out on a patch of sand on the road. A crash with no other vehicle, and without going off the road. I got a helmet the next week.

Answer
You do not have to wear a helmet if you do not want to. It is everyone's free choice weather to do so or not. To say that helmets discourage people from riding is ludicrous because that is a small aspect of cycling.

I choose to ride and race bike because I like it. I decide to wear a helmet because I have been involved in crashes before and I don't want to die. But I rock out the look and I do not care what others think. A helmet is part of my style.

Motorcycle Riders Only - Question About Wearing Helmets / Helmet Laws?

Q. To be blunt...I just, flat out, do not understand why anyone riding a motorcycle feels that helmet laws are somehow unfair. To me, it's a common sense kind of issue. You wear a helmet to keep your face from getting peeled in the event of a slide, or better yet, to keep your head from exploding like a strawberry if you get thrown.

With the exception of a few baby boomers, I think most everyone agrees that wearing a seatbelt is a smart move, and almost all states require occupants of automobiles to wear them. So why not require bikers to wear helmets. Helmets HAVE and DO save lives. So, what are the arguments against helmet laws? Why are some riders adamant that they shouldn't have to wear helmets?

Serious answers only...no children talking about how they hate wearing helmets while riding their bicycles (you're underage...get used to it).
I'm sorry dexter_c....but not all states require helmets.

http://www.saferoads.org/issues/fs-helmets.htm
Cool...some really good answers.

I'd also like to qualify the statement about baby boomers. The only people I have ever seen / known to have a problem wearing seatbelts in cars, and who have actually argued against them, are baby boomers...and that statement was just based upon my experience along the east coast...no offense was intended.
Supplemental Question to the original:

For those of you that feel it should be a choice left to the individual, and not regulated by the government...do you think its fair that current law allows the family of a motorcycle crash victim to sue the driver of the other vehicle for wrongful death, etc. in cases where cause was either dual fault or no fault, and a helmet could have saved the victim's life?

Answer
The problem with a helmet law is that by having one, the government gets out of having to educate vehicle drivers how to coexist on the roads with motorcycles. In michigan, there is very little mention in drivers education, and even on the drivers liscense test about dealing with motorcycles on the road. People in cars do not know how to look for us on bikes, nor are they able to proberly apply right of way rules because they don't know. Its been my personal experience that in states with out helmet laws, cars give bikes the same respect they'd give another car. That is not the case in Michigan.

I don't like to wear a helmet, and yes, when I cross the Ohio border I stop and take mine off. When I ride in Michigan, I wear a "beanie" type helmet. I wear a helmet like this because, when I first started riding I was wearing a regular full helmet and I felt very uncomfortable with the lack of peripheal vision I had. Helmets are ineffective above 15 miles per hour, because it is not your skull cracking that hurts you. The sudden stop at the end causes your brain to slap against the inside of your skull. This bruises your brain, and brain matter does not heal. This is the cause of brain injuries. A helmet won't stop that. So other than making someone who hits me feel better about it due to a little less blood, I really don't see any need to wear one any more protective than the one I wear.

Now, some common sense must apply as well. On a bike you must protect your eyes...a rock, or worse a bug can blind you at 70 going down the freeway. Obviously if you can't see you are in trouble. The same applies for your head. I usually wear something at higher speeds, just because you never know when a car will kick up a rock, and it will hurt. So sure, its wise to wear head protection at times. Do I need a darth vader mask? Naw, I don't think so, nor do I think that a bunch of stodgy, old man politicians and a wart faced canadian broad have any business telling me I have to. (if you're not from michigan, our governor is canadian.)

No, I don't like seat belts either. I don't have a good arguement for that, I just don't like feeling restrained when I'm driving. I do agree that keeping me from flying through the windshield in an accident is a good thing. I'm just curious why the school bus that my kids ride in doesn't have seat belts?

I am 39 years old, and have been riding for 10 years.

Does anyone know is a bike helmet could save a child's life if that child was hit by a car?

The Jolly

I know that bike helmets are essential and absolutely prevent head injuries when a child falls off a bike (assuming it fits properly and buckled, etc.)

But would a kid stand a chance if hit by a car and wearing a helmet?

In case your're wondering this question was prompted by an 8 year old being killed on his bike yesterday. He was riding with his father but he had no helmet on when a van struck him. :'(
Really? A helmet only protects the head? Well who whuda thunk it?

For chrissake, I know that. He died of a head injury. I'm asking if helmets are designed to protect in a big impact like that.

It's only dubious to a moron. I have my own child and these issues are important to me.

Answer
Sorry to hear of the accident, that's sad. I'm not good at delivering bad news, so please bear with me on this

Whilst it's tempting to say that "a helmet would have saved his life", it's not always the case. Bike helmets are made of polystyrene foam which is supposed to absorb some of the impact - essentially flattening the roundness of the head to make a bigger contact point at the point of impact, thus reducing the forces on that part of the head. As bicycling is an aerobic exercise (as opposed to motorcycling, which involves you sitting on the motorbike and not much else, at least activities-wise), a bicycle helmet needs to be ventilated or we'd overheat and pass out.

A bike helmet is supposed to be able to reduce injuries to a person falling off their bike from a height of <4 feet at a speed of <12mph. This essentially means a kid falling off his/her bike without any additional forces being exerted, as you've mentioned.

In the case of a van hitting the kid, this immediately takes the helmet out of its certification zone. This hurts to say this, but it's unlikely that the helmet would have made much difference given how they're designed to operate. One other thing to be aware of is that many helmet-certification tests allow the helmet to be taped to the test rig as well as strapped how it should be worn. This is clearly not something we'd do, and nor are we supposed to do it. When independently tested by a UK consumer magazine, many helmets failed to meet the standard (in this case EN1078, for Europe) they were supposedly certified to.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Is it just me or are bicycle helmets worthless....?

Nazgul

I'm not an avid bike rider so my point might be moot but in my opinion they seem very ineffective, sit far too high and don't offer any face protection, I can understand they are made for low (bike) speed impacts but it seem auto accidents are far more likely to injure or kill you thus making the bike helmet worthless in a real world scenario. Also, my biggest complaint is the false sense of security they offer in my opinion and make non wearers seem reckless and dangerous. How often does one land in a way the a high riding foam and plastic skull cap can protect you from...I would be far more concerned about my face structure, fill me in please. Thanks!

Answer
If your helmet is sitting "far too high", you're wearing it wrong. The front should cover the forehead & be the first thing to touch the ground.
https://www.google.com/#q=how+to+wear+bicycle+helmet
http://www.evolutionofdad.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/bike_helmet.jpg

Next...if you think most bicycle accidents or "wrecks" or crashes involve a motor vehicle - you are WRONG! A full 45% do NOT involve anyone or anything else. 45% are SOLO FALLS.
http://thinkbicyclingblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/kaplan_bike_crash_causes.jpg

Are the streets & roads in your area lined with marshmallows in case of a fall? No...I didn't think so. Most bicycle crashes occur at slower speeds, not involving a car. Helmets can & do save lives.

As far as reckless & dangerous cyclists...don't ya think they would be that way with or without a helmet? Sometimes...you just can't fix stupid. Prime example or illustration demonstrated on this link... https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZo2DGC5RrlNrAdnwXhNsMew1K_bKF-6LKFXWsvioj6nwSov1OWoeFOL9VrTCqTSemy73-6zhvvaym2IdHsqZ8iRZ1zEy3DbgbE-5HWOaeda8kB2u8P6ZXgnKxxO6epbksZtAs_rG6FHVP/s400/You+Can't+Fix+Stupid.jpg

What type of roller blades are good for daily outside use?

bicycle helmets save lives on Cool Bike Helmets
bicycle helmets save lives image

25 week

I want to get some roller blades for exercising outside. But does it matter what kind I get? I want them comfortable. But I dont want to wear the wheels down like within a couple weeks of using them outside. I would like somthing affordable. What should I get? Where should I go? Whats the usaul price for roller blades? I dont want to get ripped off.

Answer
Any inline skates you find will be good for outside.
I probably go through a set of wheels each year but I also typicaly skate 20-40 miles per week. Was down in Miami Beach for the Great EsSkate and did 102 miles over Friday to Sunday.

Avoid the skates from discount stores unless you don't intend to skate very often.

The big box sporting goods stores (Dick's, SportMart, etc) typicaly carry the low to mid level of the quality skates. You are likely to find Rollerblade and K2 skates and sometimes the BladeRunner Brand which is Rollerblade's cheap line.
Depending on where you live, you may have some specialty stores that carry better skates.
Do an online search for inline skate clubs in your area. The people in the clubs can help you find the stores that have good skates and getting started on them.

You can find good skates anywhere from $100 to $200. Generally the higher priced skates have features that make them work better.

Fit is the most important. The skates should be snug all around your feet witout smashing your toes. Basicly the smallest skates that you can wear are the best. Loose feels good while trying them on but doesn't when your feet are moving around inside the skates when you use them.
Different models fit different feet better, try on everything.
Women's skates are shaped differently but may fit some guys better than the men's skates.

Things to look for in a skate:
I don't recommend any skate with wheels smaller than 80mm. 80mm is the smallest common size for replacement wheels and the smaller ones are not as good. Bigger wheels roll better but I deffinately wouldn't suggest anyone trying to learn on 100mm wheels.
Metal frames (the part that hold the wheels) are better than plastic ones.
Don't pay any attention to ABEC ratings of the bearings, it is almost meaningless.

Get a set of pads and a helmet. A bicycle helmet is good for normal skating and can save your life.

Is there a point in riding a fixed gear bike if you have brakes ?

wrongdiagn

What's the point ? You might as well get a cheap o'l road bike.

Also is it necessary to ride with a helmet ?

Answer
No point in riding fixed gear bikes, brakes or no brakes. But, if I wanted to take all the joy out of riding and went to the dark side and bought a fixed gear bike, I would have a front brake. Much easier and safer to slow down when a brake is used instead of just the traction of the rear wheel and skidding.
Yes, it is necessary to ride with a helmet.
Friend went down due to blacking out. Split the helmet in two. While there were some complications due to the blackout, helmet saved his LIFE.
Law or no law, I always wear a helmet whether I am on my bicycle or my motorcycle.

is it legal to have kid seating at bike back in california?

bicycle helmets save lives on brainy idea: Bicycle helmets save lives and prevent injuries

jian l

if yes, what is the hardware requirement? and what is
the safety tips to carry a kid in bicycling?

Answer
A kid seat on the back of your bicycle is legal in California and a helmet is required. However, I strongly recommend against those seats. They make your bike top heavy and if you fall, your child falls with you. Your best bet is to buy a trailer to attach to your bike. They have roll cages and if your bike falls over, the trailer hitch has a pivot attachment which keeps the trailer upright. Also, if the trailer does happen to fall over, the roll cage (and helmet) will protect the child. Yes, trailers cost quite a bit more but ask yourself: Are you willing to sacrifice your child's life to save money?

How to install pyramid bike dog leash?

ellieinthe

uh, i bought it off ebay and i am puzzled as how to install the thing, all i got was a long metal piece with a velco thingy on one end and a leash thing on the other. Please help me!

Answer
Jeepers, I'm a cyclist and I've never heard of this.
Here's a picture of one at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-Bicycle-Dog-Leash/dp/B0006514IG

It looks to me like the velcro at one end wraps around the chain stay near the drop outs. Doesn't appear to be the safest nor most secure way to tote a dog around, if you ask me.

Do be very careful. Wear a helmet, proper cycling glasses, gloves..... there there to save your skin and your life...and believe me they're not fashion statements nor something to sneeze at. Go easy and take your dog on routes where you know it's safe and distractions are at a minimum.

fuck

i have no idea on what are the differences on trailers.
Which one is the safest and easy to install?
and are they expensive?

thanks, this is for one child 2 year old... is the age appropriate for my baby to ride on a bicycle trailer?

whats the worst that can happen? do my child need to wear a helmet ? and me too? im in california.

Answer
Here is a link to a site that sells them
http://www.bicycletrailers.com/home.jsp

The child is old enough to ride on a trailer and a helmet is required, you live in ca and all minors must wear a helmet whether they are sitting in a trailer or pedaling themselves. You also need a helmet, although it is not the law I highly recommend it. My helmet saved my life when I was in an accident and I would never ride without one.
