are quad bikes legal ?

Q. i see these complete lunatics driving a quad bike with people on the back and they looked "chav-ish" enough of not having insurance or helmets.

what are the UK and U.S Laws on this ?

thanks

Answer
Define "legal"? You mean to drive on the road? I don't know about the UK, but none of the states in the US allow for legal registration and licensing of a quad for street use.

That said, the specifics vary state to state in the US, but there's no law requiring a helmet or limiting passengers so long as the vehicles are being operated off road either with permission from the land owner or on public property set aside for off road vehicles.

Helmet choice, can u help?

Stu

hey, right i'll be gettin a new bike soon which also means a new helmet. now for the question. i'll be doing a good bit of mountain biking and probably some downhill stuff aswell and i'm not sure what kinda helmet to get. should i go for:

common bike helmet: http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/productImages/1/9/00000116719-GiroPneumoBicycleHelmet-large.jpeg

Mullet helmet: http://www.fifecycles.co.uk/catalog/images/mullet.jpg

Full face helmet: http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7137/yh661pb7nclsideqt7.jpg

or do u have other suggestions. 1 thing that gets to me is heat. when i'm cycling i tend to get REALLY hot and when i put on a helmet it doesnt help much....neither does my mop of hair which i love so i'm not cutting it before u suggest. but that said i'm also very concious about gettin a blow to the head. i've been told should get a fullface by one person and a mullet by some1 else. i can see why the fullface is better cause it protects ur chin but would i get far too hot? have u any suggestions?

Answer
The regular bike helmet will be fine for riding on the road and most trails. The heat isn't too bad with one of these and if your real worried get one with many large air holes. The one in the picture is nice.

But for downhill you will definitely want a full face helmet. For 2-5 minutes at a time going fast down a hill the extra protection is well worth the heat.

Is a bike helmet really safe?

Shaz

Recently I fell off my bike and landed on my face, giving me lots of painful facial grazes and cuts...wasn't too nice. I wasn't wearing a helmet at the time but someone told me that it wouldn't have made a difference because I landed on my face and that actually a helmet could have broken my neck or made the injury worse.
Does anyone know if this is true cos it's making me unsure as to whether I should wear a helmet next time I cycle or not?

Answer
In the UK the CTC [1] are against compulsory helmet use. They reason that it has demonstrably damaged the case for cycling in countries where such a law has been introduced.

However, I always wear a helmet. It is sometimes hot and uncomfortable, but I firmly believe that it provides good protection against brain damage. Richard Ballantine [2] was very much of the same opinion in his original Bicycle Book.

Many cycling accidents happen at low speed where the rider is pitched over the handlebars and the head is the first contact with the ground.

If a helmet works and saves a rider from injury, then no government statistic or hospital records will be created. Instead there will be one more helmet purchase as a grateful rider buys a replacement! So any statistics on helmets making an injury worse or not preventing an injury will be substantially skewed by the silent majority of cases.

Now to your specific case: Yep, it must really hurt injuring your face like that. But your face absorbed the impact that your brain could have receieved had you landed slightly differently. The fact that a helmet sticks out about 1.5 inches might have reduced the impact to your face. If a helmet were worn incorrectly (such as tilted right back; something I frequently see) then it might damage your neck. However, worn correctly and with the straps done up, I fail to see how it could make the situation worse. Anyway, facial injuries may be unpleasant and require plastic surgery, but they are a lot more recoverable than brain injuries.

So, on balance, I'd suggest you wear a helmet and ignore the alarmist view that caused you to post your question.

is this a good bike helmet?

bike helmet?

hi mum

i live in the uk and always see children wearing bike helmets but not their parents. this made me think that isn't that a bad example or something. can someone tell me why parents don't but children have to is it cost or appreance or something.

btw. i know some adults do but i am going with what i view as the majority of the british public.

Answer
I agree with you completely. Helmets are required for children where I live, but I rarely see adults wear them. I really think it sets a bad example for the kids.

motor bike suits help please?

Lol

does you need to wear a bike suit ( ano you got to wear a helmet ) but do you need to wear the suit in england is the law that you need to wear it or not thanks :D

Answer
In England a helmet is mandatory, but other gear is not. See http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069854 where it says that (1) it is "ADVISABLE to wear eye protectors" (emphasis added), (2) that you should "CONSIDER wearing ear protection" (emphasis added) and that "boots, gloves and suitable clothing may help to protect you" - but no requirement is made for this non-helmet gear.

However, if your body is valuable to you, I would strongly urge you to wear proper gear all the time. Even a fall at 30mph would most likely lead to considerable skin abrasion, leaving large scars, etc. I once experienced a fall at 30mph and, fortunately, only had a large bruise. But my helmet and my gear were severely scratched/ripped - and I'm glad that I don't have the same scratches/rips/scars on my skin now.

An example of the consequences of a motorcycle accidents on a woman who didn't wear protective gear can be seen here - warning, this is graphic: http://www.getyourownbike.com/BrittanyMorrow.htm

Everybody who is serious about motorcycling uses top gear - both professional racers as well as passionate long-distance tourers. Those people know it the best. You should follow their example. Enjoy your ride.

John

Ive just bought a bike, and I was wondering if I could ride it on the road legally?

Answer
Yes you can there is no law or legal requirement to wear a helmet. The reason you see most cyclists wearing a helmet is that if they roll into a hole in the road or there tire goes over a bump in the road they could lose control of the bike especially in a racer with the speed and the position you would be in it would be hard to not lose control of the bike. Even hitting a stone could cause you to fall or some lose pebbles on the road.

It is really suggested that you do get a helmet for you own safety.

Best of luck and have fun with your new bike.

Is it the law to wear a helmet while biking?

Q. I live in Vancouver, BC. What are the laws about bike safety?

Answer
I wonder if they beat you over the head with batons if you refuse?
In the UK bicycle helmets are optional.
