If you know about bicycles i need your assistance?

carlospvog

I need a bike to go around town. I have no clue about bikes so, can you help me?

1) I live in Caracas Venezuela, which means a lot of uphill and downhill biking. Some have told me "Buy a mountain bike" but there are like eight gazillion different mountain bikes. Suspension, no suspension, 10 speed, 21 speed....

2) There aren't really bikeways here so i need good, safe brake systems. I know some bikes have brakes in the front and others have it in the pedals.....what's better? What's cheaper on the long run?

3) I'm not using it for leisure only, so how can i manage to get some modest amount of "cargo" space? (say, a laptop....)

4) What's the difference between 20 and 26 inches rin? are they just for different sizes of person or is it something else? I'm 1,80m tall (5.9 feet)

5) Any other pointers you deem important

All opinions will be thanked!

Answer
1) You may have been aimed at mountain bikes because those people believe they are more versatile and comfortable, which is partly true. They have wider tires and usually let you sit up a little straighter. This can be quite nice for a new rider. The down side is they come with wide usually knobby tires and are very slow on paved surfaces. This will make you work harder then you have to.
Avoid suspension systems. They will cost you more money and give you nothing in return for the riding you want to do.

If there are lots of hills you will be happy with more gears regardless of the style of the bike. Look for something with three chainrings in front and whatever in the back. A small ring up front will help you get up steep hills without swearing.

If you plan on riding on paved surfaces and you are somewhat flexible you will probably be happier on a road bike with slightly wider tires. If you would like to sit up straighter and wish to ride on stones, gravel and rough unpaved roads I would also recommend a mountain bike. It will cause you less grief in the long run.

2) Safe brakes are the most important part of a quality bicycle. What good is going if you can't stop? Find a bicycle with good rim brakes. Those come in many styles but have visible brake pads that squeeze the rim to slow you down. The other style you're talking about is called a coaster brake and works by rolling the pedals backwards to stop. This is OK on flat road but no good for rough surfaces or steep hills. Why? Because you can lock the back wheel and skid but not stop as fast as a strong front brake will. Like cars 90% of the braking is done on the front wheel. Find a bike with good front rim brakes. Disc brakes are available but are generally more expensive and require more maintenance. Rim brakes are what you want.

3) If you want cargo space get a rear rack and some panniers, other wise known as cargo bags that hang on the rear rack. This is the simplest and cheapest way to carry stuff around with you. Make sure they are secure on the rack so they don't bounce off and you lose your laptop. it happens.

4) Rims sizes usually change with the size of the bike. There are exceptions, but they only prove the rule. 26" rims come on standard mountain bikes. 700C wheels are typical for road bikes. 27" wheels are common on road bikes from the early eighties and earlier. 20" wheels are usually foundon BMX and folding bicycles.

It's easier to buy tires for common sized rims so find something ordinary like 700c or 27" if you buy a road bike or 26" if you buy a mountain bike.

The width depends on three things: A) Are you fat or skinny? Wider for fat people, thinner for skinny people. B) Are you riding on rough roads? If you are wide tires protect you by offering a softer ride and protect the rim by keeping it from bottoming out and getting bent on a rock.
C) What tire fits through the frame. Every frame is a little different. If the tire is too big it will rub on the frame. This is bad. Avoid it.

5) My suggestions:

a) Ride a few bikes before you decide.

b) BUY YOUR BIKE FROM A BICYCLE SHOP. Do not expect to get a decent bike at a department store or big box store. They are heavy and cheaply made and while they are cheaper your will shortly regret the savings.

c) A quality used bike is a better buy than a new cheap bike.

d) If you are going to ride often you'll want a helmet, a lock and cable, and lights. Front and rear lights. You also may want fenders to keep from getting covered in goo on muddy roads or on rainy days.

e) If you get a mountain bike I would suggest you get smooth tires for it unless you are going to ride it only on dirt trails up and down mountains. Knobby tires are sluggish and can be unsafe on flat roads.

â Enjoy your ride! Cycling is a lot of fun, it's good for the earth, and it's good for you. Ride defensively, look out for cars, and have fun. Good luck with your new bike.

Should individuals be allowed to engage in unsafe activities if they choose to do so?

heartegram

Legislation aimed at "protecting people from themselves" concerns the individual as well as the public in general. In california, protective helmet laws (for all motorcycles riders and bicycles for children under 16) are just one example of such legislation. Should individuals be allowed to engage in unsafe activities if they choose to do so?

Answer
>Should individuals be allowed to engage in unsafe activities if they choose to do so?

NO!!! When some douche refuses to wear a helmet EVERYBODY's insurance rates go up in addition the state generally has to foot the bill when some dumbazz fails at base jumping or free climbing an office building because nobody insures for illegal activity not to mention the possible injuries to innocent bystanders.

The fact of the matter is less than 1% of the population can afford to pay their own way when it comes to the aftermath of their misadventures why should society have to subsidize morons?

Riding a horse using a bicycle helmet?!?

kittylover

I want to bareback ride my Belgian Carlene, she is 17 hh. I have never rode bareback before. My dad goes "I don't give a @#$% about that horse go get on her for all I care!" I ride western usually and I don't wear a helmet as most westerners don't. He don't care if I die. So I am asking is a bicycle helmet too tacky on you if you ride a horse? No one will see me and I guess it's better than dying. She is 12 yrs old like me and she has never been ridden. I know this might be a bad idea but I want to ride really bad, I usually ride well broke trail horses and my dad said I could ride her until I get a 15 hh Haflinger in September.

Answer
What does Dad have to do with your behaving dangerously and acting out? You know better than that!
Wait until September to work with your new Haflinger!
Until then, train the Belgian Carlene to longe nicely, act in a mannerly way and basically sell your dad on how trustworthy you are. IF you must mount up, borrow a friends ASTM -f1163 certified helmet, or invest in one for just $40 bucks.

That 17hh is no horse to ride in any hat, being UN ridden before. Topping your head with a bike helmet is silly and obviously won't get dad's notice, nor will it absorb the shock of a fall. Its unwise and unsafe.
Have some fun and train her. Your instincts that it is a bad idea to ride are square on: Believe in your skill in training and get going the right way.

Riding a motorcycle is unsafe, even with a helmet

Lois Griff

People in cars have to wear seatbelts...........you should have to wear helmets.

But even with a helmet, motorcycles are very unsafe......if you crash, your body can go flying. How wreckless.

Regular, non-motor bikes are very beneficial and serve as healthy exercise....but still wreckless to ride them without a helmet.

Why don't you people wear helmets? Do you not mind if your head gets busted open?

Answer
You are right, motorcycles are unsafe. Some other things that are unsafe: sex, airplanes, elevators, earthquakes, sharks, boats, ocean, trains, wilderness, cars, dogs, bicycles, skateboards, drugs, running. Now if you check statistics you'll find motorcycling doesn't need you attention as much as many other things. Sex causes more injury and death that motorcycles ever could, perhaps you should spend your efforts to fix sex. What do you care if someone busts their head open, does it somehow effect your life OR does your life suck and you choose to harass people about wearing a helmet cause it makes you feel better. If you just want to help people then I'd suggest doing something about the terrible drivers that choose to crash into people with motorcycles, if they are hard at seeing then maybe they shouldn't drive, fix that if you want to make a difference. By the way, I wear a helmet and I know it's not up to me if other people do. Maybe make a deal with some non helmet wearers, You'll do what they tell you to do if they do what you want.

How can the average kid help get smoking banned?

I am doing a brochure for my seventh grade language arts class. We are working on persuasion; I chose smoking to be my topic. My argument is that it should be banned, but I need to use some persuasive techniques for a good grade. One way I was planning to do this is to explain how kids in my class can help get smoking banned. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Firstly, I very strongly disagree about banning smoking, largely on the grounds of individual freedom, and if you want to ban smoking, you should ban alcohol, a more destructive drug first.

Being underage (thus unable to vote) there is very little that kids can do, except encourage adults to quit.

I'm not sure telling kids how they can help get smoking banned will help be persuasive and it does distract from the main arguement, which is "why smoking should be banned", instead of "how to ban smoking".

Here are some persuausive arguements I would use:
*ask the class to think about if cigarettes were a new invention, and were not widespread in society, and if they should be allowed.
* Argue that the smoker is not only harming himself, but also others (2nd hand smoke) including her/his family who have to suffer the grief of an early death.
*Argue that the government has a moral responsiblity to protect people from things like tobacco that may kill them, and tobacco should be banned for the same reason riding a bicycle without a helmet, driving a car thats unsafe, or riding a car without a seatbelt, to protect the safety of the individual.
*Point out the costs to smoking on society (including not only medical expenses, but days of work due to illnesses) and argue that society should have a right to protect itself by banning things that impose costs on it.
*Lastly, ask the kids to think if they had children would they allow them to smoke. If not, why should we (society) let adults do it.

Like I said, i do not agree with banning smoking, but the above arguements should be persuausive. Good luck with your assignment.

Is there a motorcycle safety belt or some other safety device used to connect a young child to the driver?

My little girl cannot reach the footpegs (by 8-10 inches) and she is pestering me to take her for a ride ever since she got a helmet for her 5th birthday. I would love to, but safety comes first. I have asked a Michigan State Police Officer about laws govorning child passengers on motorcycles and he informed me that there is no age limit, and the only law he was familiar with was that for a passenger to ride on a motorcycle, the bike has to have 2 things - a rear seat and rear footpegs.

Answer
I take my kids out for little rides. We go slow around town.

And I am sure you are smart enough to dress her properly! Geez, people are freaking out! Don't they take there kids for bicycle rides? That can be just as dangerous with traffic around.

The law in Alberta is no passenger in front of you. (I think) And I think that would be unsafe for control of the bike.

I think it would not be safe to harness them to you. I have told all of mine (age 5 to 9) that if the bike is falling over, to get away from it so it doesn't land on top of them. I don't worry about them falling off though. They hook there fingers through my belt loops in the front of me.

It would be safer if her feet reached the pegs. But I think as long as she had somewhere to firmly place them, for stability.

Remember to tell her that if she rides it, she has to help clean it! (but they usually like this anyway!)

Scared to ride bike on the road, how to avoid getting hit?

I just got a road bike but too scared to ride on the streets of the suburbs.

Answer
Firstly, there are a lot of misconceptions about cycling. Many people believe cycling on the road is unsafe, yet it is much safer than riding (or walking) on the sidewalk, and twice as safe as car travel! A lot of things about cycling are unintuitive - what seems safe often isn't, while what seems dangerous is often safer.

To avoid getting hit...

Cycle in the roadway, 3 or 4ft from the curb, in the rightmost lane that serves your destination, or if the road is too narrow for cars to pass safely within the lane, close to the center of that lane.

Wear a reflective yellow vest, strong lights at night, and reflective tape on the bike where it can most easily be seen.

Ride at a position in the road that will increase your visibility. Be seen, be predictable, ride as you would drive a car, signal your intentions, and you'll be safe.

Never ride against traffic, never ride on the sidewalk. Try to avoid bicycle paths or bike lanes, which can be more dangerous than the unmarked road.

Wearing a helmet won't prevent you from being hit (unless it's a bright colour or has reflective material, or is equipped with a mirror), but if you are hit, it may prevent or reduce the chances of getting brain damage that can kill you or turn you into a vegetable.

You will be honked at by ignorant road users. Ignore them. They don't know you have the same right to the road that they do, but at least their honking means they see you.

Finally, if you're nervous, take a confident cycling course. The League of American Bicyclists offers a free course in every state entitled 'Smart Cycling'. Also, learn your state's road rules and look up your local cycling ordinances. With knowledge comes confidence.

Remember, cycling is safe, but like everything else, it contains a particle of risk. Do what I've suggested, and what others here have suggested, and your particle of risk will get even smaller.

is it ILLEGAL to use a bicycle helmet when riding a gas scooter (150cc)?

.

I already know it's unsafe. I'm asking if it's *illegal*.

Thanks.
Texas.
xxx...I grew up a long time ago. Why don't you try it. It's a blast.

Answer
