Where can I find a small baby bike helmet?

Lina Q

I bought the coolest bike seat for my baby (iBert T-front bike seat) and I cannot wait to take her out on it. Problem is I cannot find a small enough helmet for her. The smallest I can find is for babies with a head of at least 18.50". I measured her head and its just about 17.5". She is 8 months old. Does anyone know of a good helmet for her age/size?
According to our pediatrician, we were given the go to take her on the bike in a child bike seat. Each child develops at their own pace. My daughter has had full head and neck support for a few months now. She is already taking steps on her own. She will probably be walking completely by the end of her 9 month birthday from what we can see now. I also checked the laws in my State and County and it is allowed.

Answer
Never take a baby that young on a bike, their neck is not strong enough to support their head let alone a helmet. In some states like New York it is against the law to have a child under a year old on a bike or trailer.

Edit: If your pediatrician said it was OK for your child to have a 2 lb helmet on his head at 8 months old I would get another pediatrician.. He or she is very irresponsible suggesting that it would be OK.

There is a very good reason they don't make helmets that small.

Where can you buy a helmet for a 1 year old?

RilYnn

All of the helmets I have seen are for 3+ years, the child seats are for 1 year and up, what helmet do the children wear between the ages of 1 and 3? where can I get one?

Answer
Any specialist bike store which sells seats or trailers for babies will also sell helmets for them. The toy stores tend to have helmets for kids who will be actively playing on bikes.

Do babies have to wear a helmet while in bike trailers?

Arianna

I have a 15 month old son, and I would love to take him out ridding.
But I am unsure if I need to have him wear a helmet. I have looked in stores and have found none even near small enough...
The trailer has a cage around it, and it straps in with a 5 point harness, but I dont want to take him out without knowing.

Answer
Regardless of whether or not the law requires it, you should have him wear a helmet. It will protect him and get him in the habit of wearing a helmet for when he gets old enough to ride on his own.

The reason why you haven't found one that fits is because it's not recommended that children that young be on bikes or in trailers. (and don't buy one that's big and have him "grow into it") A child that young can't take the pounding that the bumps on the road cause. You may not feel it as much, but he will. He could suffer injuries similar to "shaken baby syndrome". Is he talking yet? If not, all he can do is cry if there's a problem, and by then, it may be too late.

Also check with your local laws. Many states require cyclists and passengers to be at least 2 years old.

I know this isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but the safety and well-being of your child is your first priority.

Bike trailer for babies?

hellothere

I would like to purchase a bike trailer for babies. My baby turned 3 months last week. When can I use the bike trailer for my baby? How old should he be? I love to walk with him. I use the stroller, the baby bjorn, but would like some other options.

Answer
When my son was that age, the pediatrician said that kids under 1 year old do not have enough neck strength to hold up both their heads and a helmet. That was a long time ago, so you should consult with your own pediatrician in case theories have changed since then.

I want to know if the baby raccoon I found is definitely an orphan before I take it to a rehabilitation center.

- The raccoon was alone.
- There were flies around the raccoon.
- It has been crying overnight.

Please help, this raccoon is three weeks old and I definitely want to help it but not if I accidentally separate it from the mother. Thank you!

Answer
Wear a bike helmet, gloves and protective clothing and sit with the baby raccoon where you found it, it might cry which will hopefully alert its mother.

Raccoons may carry diseases so thats what the clothing is for.

The nobel peace price goes to........... The raccoon lady

Can anyone recommend a good infant seat for my bike?

brwneydgrl

I have a Beach cruiser style bike and I am looking for a seat for my 6 month old. Any recommendations?

Answer
A pull behind trailer. The reason for this recommendation is because the trailer will at least stay upright if you fall, and has more space around to protect baby if it does happen to roll over. A bike seat you put on your bike doesn't offer baby any protection if you fall. That said good luck finding a helmet for baby to wear, because even in the trailer s/he should wear one.
