I have been wondering this question alot...at our high school they say it is, but when you dont wear one and ride past rangers, police and security they dont really notice. It may be diffrent in other countrys so Im mainly wondering about Australia.

i want to start a new hobbie and i have been interested in motocross for a long time, but i'not sure about what i should do to start....

Well firstly you need an appropriate bike so go along to a local motorbike dealership and have a look at bikes that are suitable for mx. Without knowing a bit more about you it is impossible to suggest a specific bike as there are age groups for racing and also your own size makes a difference to what bike you should get.
Get all the basic safety gear and do not skimp on the cost of a helmet.

Go along to the track days or race days and have a look at the people practising and racing, then you can ask a few questions and also find out what others with your ability and age are racing and what sections are available to you.
Many tracks have their own local coaches that would offer lessons for beginners and depending upon what country you are in there may be different rulings. The country I am in a Senior who has never raced needs to do training before being entitled to race and with juniors 5 hours training needs to be completed and both need a licence to race, but that does not apply anywhere else other than Australia.
Do plenty of practice days out on the track with other riders before attempting to race and also training if you can.
