In Georgia, is it illegal to ride a bicycle without a helmet?

I want to get a new bicycle to ride recreationally. I will only be riding on neighborhood roads and at parks. I will not use it as a mean of transportation or on public roads.

So unless all the streets in your neighborhood are lined with marshmallows - wear a helmet. Most people who don't like helmets do so because they're too hot. Easily cured. Don't buy a cheapo one from Wally World! Get a good one with lots of ventilation either at a local bike shop or Amazon.com.

The key would be the ANSI rating difference between the two helmets, and the helmet material. I am betting that the rating is lower on the skateboard helmet because of average lower speed and impact. Other significant issues may be weight and ventilation.

Helmets tend to be very sports specific to meet the unique demands posed by each spot. While a football helmet would provide superior protection over cycling helmets. Its weight could not be carried comfortably by a cyclist with his head down. The weight, the limited vision, and impaired hearing all a detrement. And, the helmet would provide too little ventilation.... you would quickly overheat wearing one.
