I need a new mountain bike helmet. Any suggestions on makes and models that are good for the price?

HI Treebark. Every helmet fits differently. The best thing to do is go to a few bike shops that carry different brands of helmets and try them on. Hopefully the sales person in the bike shop can help you select , adjust and fit the helmet properly when you try them on.
Most GIRO helmets fit me very well and BELL helmets do not fit the shape of my head, but BELL is a quality helmet maker. When you try the helmets on try and be aware of pressure points. These are area's where the pads come in contact with your head. If it feels tight and uncomfotable try a different brand or model of helmet. Most good helmets come with different thickness pads that you can switch out to make a more custom fit.
Price is also a big factor. You get what you pay for when you purchase retail. Best way is to shop around either on the web or local bike shops for last years helmets or closeouts. Sometimes you can purchase a high end helmet for half price or even more! Most helmets are the same as last years model, just a different color or graphics on the helmet.
If you purchase a lower priced helmet make sure it has the CPSC or ASTM certification sticker. All helmets have to be up to these standards of helmet safety. Remember More vents in the helmet, the cooler your head stays on hot days.

Best motorcycle helmet?

I'm going to be getting my motorcycle license soon and I want to get a good helmet seeing as it will be my first bike. What do you think is the best (fit, noise, protection) brand? Is there any difference between men and women's helmets besides the graphics? A few I've been looking at is a Speed and Strength ss1000, AGV K3 crew, and a scorpion EXO400. Would these be good options or look at something else?

I'm all for all the best materials, full faced, etc. However, in the end you need to buy a helmet that you'll wear. The best helmet in the universe won't protect you if you're not wearing it. I'd rather see someone in a cheap half helmet than no helmet at all (though half helmets are barely worth anything).

Here's what I suggest, go to a shop that sells helmets, and put one on. Walk around the store for 10-15 minutes while wearing the helmet (you'll probably feel a little silly at first, but a lot of people do it). If the helmet causes pressure anywhere or starts to hurt, then don't buy it. A good shop will have a good sales person in their safety wear area. I would ask them about fit (many people tend to buy helmets that are too lose).

There's no difference between men's and women's helmets, however, they are starting to make some helmets that have a small bevel in the back padding to accommodate pony tails and dew rags.

If your concerned with protection, a full faced helmet will give you the most. Yes a three quarters or half face will protect most of it, but your chin is still left unprotected. And I've seen plenty of people take spills and land on their chin.

I've worn a full face helmet the whole time I've ever ridden, and I've never had any comfort problems (although, I wouldn't suggest an all black full faced helmet in the summer, that can get hot). I decent full faced helmet will be light colored and/or reflective (so it doesn't just absorb heat) and will have a bunch of air channels. While riding, I've never had issues with my neck or movement or anything else, though a cheap full faced can be somewhat heavy. A decent full faced helmet will be much lighter.

So make sure you'll buy what you'll wear, and you try it on in the shop for comfort. Talk to the salesperson and get them to help you with fit. The more protection the better, but any protection is better than nothing. I hope you're going to take a safety course, not only will it better prepare you, but you can also talk to the instructors about safety gear. GL

What brand dirt bike helmet is best?

I'm looking at a Bell SX-1, a Cyber UX-22, a Vega Viper Kraze, and a MSR Assault helmet. Which one is best? What do you prefer?

If we can only choose from the ones listed, it would be the Bega Viper Kraze.

None of the helmets meet SNELL standards. Look to HJC for a reasonable priced SNELL approved helmet.

The best brand of helmets are Arai and Shoei.

I ride western and don't ware a helmet. My 7 year old daughter wants to start learning how to ride, and of coarse must ware a helmet! I have not yet bought one for her, but I am going to. The horse that she'll start learning on is my soon to be 16 yro gelding, he is very well behaved and I trust him, but anything can happen and I want my girl to be safe just incase... So my questions are
#1. Could she ware her bike helmet for now, just untill I get her a proper helmet? Or is that a bad idea?

#2. How much do kids helmets cost? It wouldn't matter if it's english or western... It's just to protect her head, but she will be riding western too :)

They will protect your child's head from short falls at slow speeds, considering that children on bikes generally don't end up going, say, 30 miles per hour. A bicycle helmet will do little to protect your child's head in the event of a fall from a horse. Go get her an ASTM-SEI certified horseback riding helmet.

2. Depends on the helmet brand, some are cheap some are wicked expensive. Troxel tends to be on the cheaper side as far as pricing goes. Just make sure you get her an ASTM-SEI certified helmet, a brand new one, and whatever price you pay you will know it is adequate to protect your child's head.

Relative to other brands the Rudy Project Kontact has a fairly low profile, but rests high on the forehead.

However, how a given helmet will fit depends on the shape of your head. Each brand and model of the same brand has a slightly different shape, which rests slightly different on each person's head.

Given a choice it is better purchase a helmet you can try on even if it is not the precise model you would like most. More expensive models do not protect your head better, but often provide improved cooling by way of more aggressive venting. Giro, Bell, and other manufacturers which are more common also have very nice helmets and a similar price to the Rudy Kontact (e.g., Bell Sweep, Giro Atmos).

I don't want to spend too much money, but I would also like to be able to depend on the bike and gear I buy for a while without having to immediately upgrade to something better. If you can help me out with some good suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Okay. I would buy a Ducati, if I were independantly wealthy, but I'm not. Ducati's have more, and more expensive REGULAR SCHEDULED service, than japanese bikes. If I could pay some one to do it I'd be happy to buy a performnce machine. I'd be happy to by a Buell or Harley Davidson if were independantly wealthy. But I'm not.

I would buy a Honda, or Kawasaki, a Yamaha, or Suzuki, pretty much interchangeably. Not the top of the line, like BMWs. But it doesn't cost as much in maintenance.

Now jackets and the like, if you are a common size in a motorcycle jacket, then Joe Rocket, or Alpinestar or CorTech the other brands are all about the same. Some brands have more cachet, than others, and they all sell 2 or three lines. So you got to get the features you want at a lower cost somehow. Buy at NewEnough.com. Look at and buy from the Close-OUTS. But I wear a 5XLT, and the usual run of the mill doesn't fit, so I have used an ordinary leather jacket (G2 flight jacket, goarskin), and the Bohn Armored shirt. If I could I'd buy a Vanson custom jacket. I can't, or a SCHOTT motorcycle jacket (think Marlin Brando in the movie role that made people scared of black leather jackets.)
I also use bohn armored riding (under)pants. If you are doing something where you have to change at work to look professional , buy a pair of OVER pants with zippers down the sides. These will keep slacks office safe and literally your backside in place and unground. Do NOT count on jeans unless they have kevlar fibers, pockets for knee/hip pads, and a wide belt loop. Now try to get a pair of pants that match up to the jacket if you can, since MOTORCYCLE JACKETS ZIP TO THE PANTS. and if both are the same maker you can be confidant they will hook up. Look for a jacket longer in the back than the front, and with sleeves shaped to extend you arms out front (like holding handlebars, and leaning forward over the tank). make sure collars snap down or velcro to the jacket . A collar can beat you to death, while you are riding.

Pants need extra length. Your legs will be folded somewhat on a motorcycle in riding position, so don't get them too short.

I do not buy Motorcycles boot that make me look like a power ranger, as much as I want to look like a japanese nightmare. Most of these things are just odd for the sake of oddness. I do buy over the ankle books for riding and if I can get side zippers I do, and steel toes too.

Be careful the weak point of many side zipper boots is the zipper pull. It makes sense that these would be harder to pull than your fly. So when the handle breaks or breaks off, you have to throw them away.
You'd think they used a good metal YKK zipper wouldn't you? They do not.

So go to the web and look for "Tactical" boots, and such like footwear, they will list every standard that these things meet. The hottest tip now is to buy a pair of boots with no metal in them to get through the airport without stopping to take your shoes off. I just do not go through the airport.

I tend to prefer THOROGOOD boots and Bates boots, these are cheap enough for my tastes. $100 when you hunt around for a particular model on the web. Bates makes a style that I really like, they are leather chukkah boots with a high polish, and a STRAP to secure them to your feet. they come in mens sizes and women's sizes and EXTRA WIDE sizes. I wear a triple E, so that's one problem solved. I also like the Thorogood Ultimate Crosstrainer, also in Extra wide. Buy what suits you. but they need to be capable of staying on your feet when you are bouncing merrily down the highway, as you are wont to do now and agan. I advise you to tie your shoes, or zip them up or latch the buckle or whatever you need to keep them on your feet. There are pictures of a guy that was wearing flip flops or something that weren't all that strong. His feet were ground down by the pavement, so you could see naked bones in his feet, probably 3 years of work for him to wear shoes again. STRINGS ARE A NO-NO on a motorcycle. Sooner or later they WILL come untied, and then flap in the breeze until you stop and try to put your foot down, and the strings get caught in the rear brake pedal or the shifter or just the footpegs.

Friends don't let friends wear shorts and t-shirts and flip flops to ride motorcycles.

I can here you say, doesn't it get hot in side all that stuff. Yes, it does. There are some things you can do to adapt, to the heat of Texas Summer, where the road surface is around 150 degrees, leaning over on your bike feels like putting you head in the oven.

Buy a couple of the ties you wear around your neck to work outdoors, these things use a product like a disposable diaper to make a cooling gel, that can hold water for hours. There are VESTs that do much the same thing, only there have removable cooling pads, some of them are VERY effective. Thanks to the soldiers, for the field testing in Afghanistan and Iraq. You can get some for 200 dollars or more, and this is the kind of thing I do not have yet, other than the necktie. So you are on your own. Look for Environmental Protection suits. wear MICROFIBER shirts, they will keep you cool and dry asd well as warm in winter. Wear wool socks, winter and summer, NOT COTTON. Wools drys and wicks moisture of your feet, cotton DOES NOT DRY EASILY, Try it, dump a load of socks in the dryer, cotton socks will be that last ones dry.

I also have a couple of towels made from a non-woven matereal, that also absorb water and release it slowly for cooling effects. These are commonly found sold at professional sports places or at the gym, or amazon.com has some.

I want to start cycling, but not sure wich brand of a road bike to get?

So my step dad rides and he got my mom into it so I want to try it now. Im aware that road bikes get pretty pricey but thats alright. I just need to try and keep it under $1,000. So any suggestions on good bikes?

If you buy a $1000 bike, it will be very enjoyable to ride but, as soon as you get it you will feel the urge to upgrade bits of it. With that in mind, I'd recommend an $800 bike and save the $200 for bits and pieces.

Trek is a decent brand but pretty much any $800 bike will be similar so try a few out and choose the one you like the look and feel of best.

When upgrading, consider the contact points first: shoes and pedals, saddle and shorts, bars and tape and mitts.

If you get seriously serious and do long rides, consider the real comfort of a true ergonomic saddle. I like the SMP4Bike range, but there are many others about now too

Is there some sort of biking thing, and can you wear different bike brand jackets with another brand bike? I'm new to this. thanks!

There is nothing weird about wearing any safety gear...that just makes you smart! Now if you wore full leathers that you traditionally only see on the track, that might be a little strange, but you can wear a safety jacket, gloves, etc on a cruiser & not look weird. I haven't met a biker who cared enough to make fun of that.

Before I got a bike & I rode on the back w/ my b/f w/ no gear on, & now that I have a bike I always wear my gear, & I think "man was I an idiot for not wearing protection!"

Bottom line...road rash does not look cool, & dead looks even worse!!!!!

I wouldn't wear a Suzuki jacket on a Honda Goldwing (if that's what you're asking). That's just a major clash, but if that's all you got, that's better then road rash like I said! I have Joe Rocket gloves & jacket, Shoei helmet, & Icon boots...would wear them all the time on ANY bike, no matter what.

What is the best female motorcycle gear brand?

I know helmets are mostly unisex or most brands have helmets for both sexes (same with gloves pretty much right?) but I'm trying to find a brand for FEMALES that is equivalent with brands like AlpineStars etc for boots and jackets. I'll be purchasing some female style Kevlar Jeans, from Horny or Draggin etc so jeans don't matter. I'm just mainly looking for brands for boots and jackets. Thanks :)

The ones that have pink or purple. I take it you're talking about street bike gear. Alpinestars is your best bet, they don't specifically make gear just for a handful of FEMALES to hit the road.

I've seen Alpinestars stuff in pink...
