I am looking for a new mountain bike to use both for pretty steep and rocky trail riding, as well as riding to work. Which of these bikes is a better deal? They are all new from local shops.

Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc, $599.99

Specialized Rockhopper, $579.99

2008 Trek 4500, $430

2009 Trek 4500 $500

Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer
I would narrow it down to the Gary Fisher Wahoo and the Specialized Rockhopper. Then I would ride them at your local shop to see which fits best. I had a tough decision between a Cannondale Prophet and a Specialized Rockhopper. The Cannondale just spoke to me when I rode it. The cockpit of the bike felt more comfortable to me. Some of the employees there found the Specialized to have a more comfortable fit. It is all individual preference. Every time I choose a bike, bike part or accessory, I go to www.mtbr.com. There are reviews on anything bike related that you can imagine. Real people with real experiences. It took me two days to choose a helmet online and I read a ton of reviews on this site that really help me make up my mind on the matter. You gotta love your bike or it won't love you back :)

im just getting started mountain biking and i was wondering if the ellsworth truth was a good bike?

Answer
Heck yeah the Ellsworth Truth is a good bike! Check out reviews online (mtbr.com bicycling.com etc), you'll see how Ellsworth riders love thier bikes.

Ellsworth are not cheap though, they cost a bit more than your average mountain bike. They are serious bikes and if you can afford it, why not? Just save some of that money for bike gear like a good helmet (never go cheap on head protection), padded bike shorts, gloves, socks and shoes.

Good luck, stay safe and have fun.

I'm looking for a bike on craigslist to ride around town and maybe a few easy trails around here (nothing too crazy)...except I know nothing about how a bike should "fit". The one I'm looking at is a 24" mountain bike. I'm 5'8" with a 31-32" inseam. Will this be big enough?

Thanks!
A child's bike? Hmm, well darn it, he said it was his wife's (who never used it).

Answer
Too Small. 24" wheels are for teens and shorter adults 5' and shorter...
Bikes with 26" wheels are sized by the frame size XS,S,M,L,XL or by the seat tube length in- inches 13, 14,15,20 etc, road bikes are usually metric in- cm 52,54,56,etc; bike manufacturers usually use one sizing system. I would guess you are a S-M frame...

Go to a local bike shop and talk to the sales guy, even if you aren't going to get a bike from them they will help you with size, type, fit, etc. Buy some shorts, gloves, jersey or helmet and they should be happy with helping you.

Set your budget and then check out reviews of different models on mtbr.com, usually at the lower price range $500 and lower your frames will be about the same quality and you will be comparing the components of the bike, some bikes have better shifters, brakes, fork, etc for the $. So look for the best overall deal on a bike.

Where is a all inclusive resort in Hawaii, reasonable cost, romatic, good reviews and the best time to go?

Answer
You need to first decide what island you want to go to. There are great places to stay on all of the islands. Mariott, Hyatt, and Sheraton are some of the big resort hotel chains there.
The top things to do in Hawaii are:

1. Go to Pearl Harbor to see history at the US Arizona Memorial. You can drive or take the bus there; no need to book a tour. (Oahu Island)

2. If you are on the island of Oahu (where Honolulu and Waikiki beach is) go to the other side of the island to see the great deserted beaches (get a rental car for a day or two).

3. Go to the Polynesian Cultural Center (Oahu)

4. If you go to Maui, you gotta do the downhill bike ride. I don't recommend the sunrise one because you have to get up at 3:00 AM to get started up the mountain and its cold up there that early. If you are a romantic do it, but otherwise no. There are different bike companies and some don't take you all the way to the top, and some don't guide you back down. You can come down by yourself, there's only one road with just a little traffic, but if you are squimish about riding in the street, a company that accompanys you down will help watch the traffic for you. I have been twice and prefer Maui Downhill to the others. These companies have web sites They will pick you up at your hotel, take you to their shop to pick out a wet-suit (for the cold and mist/rain shower maybe) and gloves and helmet; then take you up the mountain; then follow your group down so they can block traffic for your ride; then afterwards take you back to your hotel. Expect this activity to take 75-80% or more of the day.

4. Also in Maui, The Road to Hana is a great drive (you need a rental car). Its a 30 mile winding road that takes 4 hours to drive. Its like driving through the jungle; has a bunch of one lane bridges.

5. On the Big Island of Hawaii: go to the Volcano National Park. Also go see Akaka Falls.

For information about tours and things to do, click on the link below for Roberts Hawaii. They do tours on all of the islands.

Whats the best thing you've bought with a dollar this year?

tambourine

I suppose it doesn't have to be this year, but i'm looking for things that are from a store. If you got something prior to this year or something from a yard sale for a dollar you can include that too.

Answer
This year I bought a tomato plant that ended up growing huge and has probably given us twenty pounds of tomatoes so far and it's still going strong.
Last year I bought a bicycle helmet at a special sale through the fire department. My brother was going mountain biking and borrowed my helmet. He fell and hit his head on a rock. That helmet saved his life. (Of course we had to throw the helmet away after that but it had served it's purpose.)
A few years back my nephew bought a rat for a buck, taught it all kinds of interesting things and won a science contest that helped him get into the college he wanted to go to.
I've got a family member that bought a house for a dollar from a church that wanted the building moved off of it's campus. When the town reviewed the permits they found the house was on the historic register which not only made it more valuable but also dictated that it could not be moved. The family member donated the building back to the church and was able to get a tax credit for charitable donation of almost $20,000. (Too bad that family member is already rich.)
