What is the best type of adult bicycle helmet for a decent price?

sammypj

wondering if it is worth it to by one at a bike shop for $50+ or target for $20?

Answer
It matters in one key area...comfort and/or ventilation. Summer is here. Your head will need to vent from as many directions as possible. Most cheap helmets only have vent slots on top. Better ones will have vent slots on the top & REAR! You can find a really good Giro helmet on Amazon.com for $40 or less with free shipping.

what is the structure of the bicycle helmets?

you'd better sent me a picture
thanks very much

Answer
ive attached a picture that shows the ventilation of a modern helmet, i couldnt find anything that shows the structure.

basically, a helmet is a foam inside with a plastic shell. the idea behind this is that when your head impacts something hard (like the ground) the foam will be crushed and absorb the impact. some expensive helmet (Giro Atmos) are built with a carbon fiber rib cage which enhances the durability of the lid. carbon will tolerate some flex before it breaks and helps transfer the impact throughout the helmet instead of one spot.

Seems like a BMX/Skating/Skiing helmet affords a lot more protection than the cycle helmets that just sit on the top of your head. I would think if you fall going 30+mph you would need a little more

But I don't bike, so what do I know

Answer
Like all quality sports equipment, helmets are sport specific. For biking a helmets weight, air ventilation, streamlining, protection, and comfort are some of the many design priorities. But all helmets must meet specific government safety specifications for their intended uses.

It would be safer to wear a down hill ski helmet or a motor cycle helmet, but we would die from heat strokes for lack of air circulation! The weight of those helmets would tend to throw us off balance and cause neck and shoulder muscle fatigue. Both dangerous conditions for bicycle riders.

I have had two helmet related accidents. The $200 helmets were both totaled. Cheap at twice the price! Interestingly, I would bet that the $90 bike helmets would protect me as well. The extra expense buys- lighter weight, more air vents, and better fit and retention systems (and some style points too).

Hope this helped to answer your question.

What should a simple bicycle helmet cost? I think some sports stores are way over-priced?

starryeyed

WEll, I'm on a budget, and I returned a helmet to Target for $15.00. Now, I thought maybe it was cheap, but then when I look at the $40.00 helmets at Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods, I wonder if they're the same quality, just over-priced, or if I'm really getting somethign better?
Right price? Good store in Albany, NY or national chain?
Wow, there's a lot of helpful people and good info here already! THanks to all... will be back for a best answer later, but it will be tough.
The story about gettng one's head run over by a truck was especially moving!
Thanks!

Answer
More expensive doesn't mean safer. The main thing you're looking for is if it is certified to meet certain standards of safety. The pricier helmets usually cost more for reasons other than safety: design, lighter materials, more ventilation, more "advanced" or easier strapping systems, and their higher price has nothing to do with safety. Perhaps the "lightness" feature (the helmet being lighter in weight) may be important enough for you to pay more, but I don't know that any helmets are "heavy." The important thing is to look for is a helmet that meets safety standards and that has a good fit for your head (so try it on before you buy and compare the fit of different models).
