Answer
what about a skateboard? helmet?pads? what about games that are sports he could play on the wii? My son is only 7 and he is into skateboarding, riding his bike, Ben 10, Bakugan, drawing, playing sports and watching tv along with games for his PSP, Nintendo DS and playstation. Not sure I helped much but I tried. Also there are toys now called TECH DECK where kids can put there boards together by themselves and keep creating different ones, there are guys that go with it along with ramps and stuff.

What is it like living near Myrtle Beach, SC?

Candy

I vacation there every year and want to know what its like living there
expense wise
safe wise
and
happiness wise

Answer
I've lived @ the beach for 4 years now (moved from Baltimore) & I have to say it's a LOT better to raise kids down here. The public school system kinda bites hard, but there are 2 catholic school, one being a blue ribbon school, that have a great turnout rate. A catholic high school is being built soon; scheduled to open in 2013. I'm lucky enough that I don't have to work, but employment oppurtunities only really come around during the tourist season from mid-April through September. The city's revenue took a big hit when the mayor made so many controlling laws that all but restricted bikers to come into town for the spring & fall rallies. They go to surfside just down the road now instead, where the noise laws aren't as ridiculous and they don't have to wear helmets. A lot of bars that were local-favorites had to close up & move outside the city limits to try to regain the bike traffic from the popular bike weeks. The housing market...well it's bad everywhere but companies are buying land up for super cheap now and then running out of funds to finish the job. Makes the city look like a has-been. However, houses that were once fetching upwards of 750K are being slashed to 320K. Excellent time to buy if you have the money. A condo (& most communities) have crazy high HOA fees, but a builder named Lennar has a few developments where I've heard the HOA's are lower than $50/month.

During the winter, just about all the bars & restaurants have great happy hour deals to bring the locals out when the tourists are gone. Wal-Mart's my go-to shopping place for just abouit everything. Another one is being built to bring the total to 4 Wal-Marts within 30 minutes of the city so the place isn't too terribly overcrowded; on week days anyway. Lowes Food doubles coupons if you don't want to spend time in line @ Wally World.

All in all, i couldn't be happier with the city itself. There's a few farmer's markets that open up in the spring, the beach is a 5 minute walk from my place, library systems are great...stay away from the Boulevard (ocean blvd) when it's dark out. That's where you'll read about most muggings/attacks in the paper. They added a penny tax to try to make up for the loss of bike week, but i'm alright with spending that in the city limits as opposed to wasting gas money to travel out for the sake of avoiding the tax. Oh, & there's always something going on. especially @ Broadyway at the Beach and (cleaner than broadway) Market Common.

AND you can tell all the folks back north (sometimes as early as February) that you're lounging on the beach in 80 degree weather while they're shoveling their drives. :)

How is there freedom if there are laws?

"Without laws, there can be no freedom.

How, for example, could you be free to drive to work if there was no law against anyone bigger than you taking your car just because he felt like it?

Richard"

but then if there were no laws, why would i go to work?

Answer
You are free to choose not to go to work, if you don't mind eventually having to live on the street. That freedom of choice will immediately mean you are not entitled to other freedoms - freedoms which you cannot afford - is your choice - the freedom to choose a crappy standard of living at the bottom of the pile, but what if everyone decided to do that? Who would produce our food, clothing, cars, homes?

Let's take a few laws and see what freedoms they provide:

Law = Crime to steal
Freedom = I can leave my car safely in a car park - unlikely it will be stolen due to protection of this law

Law = Crime to kill
Freedom = My son can beat an opponent in sport in safety - unlikely fanatic father of defeated kid will kill my son due to this law

Law = Traffic infringement to speed
Freedom - I can drive on roads in safety - reduces likelihood of a vehicle blowing me off the highway and over a cliff face

Law = Truancy breach if children do not attend school
Freedom = Education provides the opportunity to be free to choose meaningful employment, to save up and enjoy the freedom of owning a home. Many would not go to school without this law, so society would be full of drop-outs = higher crime rate, higher taxes to support them, etc. which all compromise other freedoms

Law = Crime to rape/other sexual offences.
Freedom = My daughter has the freedom to go to the beach in safety - unlikely some sex-crazed, over-hormoned youth will attack her due to this law

Law = Building codes and Council by-laws
Freedom = Can walk into my home, shopping malls and offices without fear of the foundations collapsing and killing us all - builders less likely to build unsound and dodgey buildings, due to the protection of this law

Law = Smoking prohibited in certain public areas
Freedom = Can eat, drink, relax in places of entertainment etc. knowing it is no risk to my health - people unlikely to smoke where prohibited due to this law

Law = Must wear a seat belt/bike helmet
Freedom = Freedom to travel is not compromised - adds security, minimising likelihood of serious injury in case of accident

Law = Cannot import/manufacture/grow or sell illicit drugs
Freedom = Can enjoy the freedom to attend schools or place of work amongst responsible citizens engaged in industrious pursuits/working/learning/contributing gainfully to personal prosperity and prosperity of country = enables other freedoms of a stable society

The list goes on and on, but I am sure you get the picture by now.

what is the legal age to not wear a helmet when riding a bike? do you wear a helmet?

yahhoooey

and how old are you if you dont ?

Answer
in Massachusetts, all riders under 16 are required to wear helmets. at 17 you are allowed to be stupid. I'm 37 and have religiously worn my helmet since one saved my life 24 years ago! if kids think helmets are uncool today, they never had the fun of the "Spaceballs" look! anyway, my helmet was ripped from my head in a high-speed impact. yes, I said ripped from my head. I doubt my skull would have been as effective in protecting my grey-matter. two years later, my best friend was killed in a cycling accident. the difference? he had no helmet on! my kids have worn helmets since they've been on trikes! my 9 year-old learned today why, as she endo'd off her brand new Gary Fisher! she's in better shape than the bike, which needs new chainrings! why? because she was wearing a brand new helmet, PROUDLY purchased with her own money!

even if you aren't killed, you can become physically incapable of riding your bike! brain injury can cause paralysis, loss of equilibrium, and a host of debilitating problems. do you really want to risk losing the freedom of riding on two wheels?!

can you sustain great enough injury to kill you when wearing a helmet? hell yes! it still happens at an all too high rate. but, I prefer to sway the odds in my favor, and wear a helmet!

How to convince your parents to let you buy a motorcycle?

Hi, I am 16 and a half right now, and I would like to get a motorcycle. My parents are usually open to things like this as long as they know that I will be using it for the right purposes. Believe it or not, I do not have the urge to do stupid crap on it all day like some kids my age might. The three main reasons I want a motorcycle over a car are: 1) Gas is much cheaper 2) They are less expensive to buy in the first place and 3) I just love the excitement of it. The model I have in mind is a used 2011-2012 Kawasaki ninja 650r. I have looked at the new ninja 300 but I would end up getting rid of it too soon. One of the big points of buying a slightly larger motorcycle is so I can stick with it for 5 years or so. I will be taking the MSF coarse, buying gloves, jacket, helmet, close toed shoes, plus jeans and for the first month or so I will limit myself to 50 mph roads to get used to it. I will probably ride it around in a parking lot for the first week or so. So if you were me, how would you go about convincing your parents to allow you to buy a motorcycle?

Answer
Unless you are old enough to live on your own, there is now way to convince your parents. They are not less expensive. A set of tires on a bike can cost you as much as a set on a car installed. You will not limit yourself in any capacity, either speed, or distance more than likely. I say this from experience. Anyone who's ever rode knows this. A 650R is not recommended for any age beginner. let alone one at 16. You say you will limit yourself to 50 but that bike will do 50 in first gear, so that's not reality. The death and crash rate for your age group makes the insurance the highest you will ever pay in your life. I rode a 500CC for the first 2 1/2 years and was still learning on it. It's nonsense to say you'll outgrow it. There is just too much to learn on a bike for that to be true.

What type of motorcycle should I start out with?

Tanner

I am wanting to get a motorcycle this summer and I don't know what would be best for me. I haven't ridden an actual motorcycle before (but have with my dad on his with him controlling it). I can see myself on various kinds of motorcycles and enjoying them. I can see myself on cafe racers, sporty motorcycles, enduros, rat bikes, and also standard motorcycles. The reason i think I would like a cafe racer is because they have that history with them that I find amazing and I like the look of them too, I can see myself on a sport motorcycle like a cbr 250 or a ninja 250 because I have heard that they are really fun to ride. I like how enduros can go off road but they tend to be expensive (or at least that I don't find any decent priced ones). Rat bikes(: I love how they have personality but they tend to be hard to come by that I actually like. I'm only 17 and I would like to point out that I do not like the idea of american chopper looking motorcycles or touring motorcycles. I want a motorcycle that won't make me look like another kid on a motorcycle. I'm thinking about racing some friends on it and I would like to add in a possibility of doing it off road too. I think I would be using it for some fun in lively towns most but not stunts. I wish to learn how to drift on a motorcycle too like in supermoto or moto rally kinds of ways but I want to avoid enduros as much as possible. I will also be using this for my primary commuting vehicle too. If you have any suggestions please help me out on this because I need an expert of some level of help deciding.

Answer
The first thing you have to do is make up your mind. Do you want to drag race? track race? go off road? race off road? commute? Each of these forms of riding require a different style of motorcycle. No one bike will do them all.

If you are thinking of "racing your friends" on public roads, just stop now and never get on a bike. Not only is street racing quite illegal (you tend to lose your license when the police catch you), but you give respectful riders a bad name, and your crashes cause OUR insurance rates to increase. Buying a race class bike, Like a CBR600, r6, etc makes you what we in the motorcycle community call a squid, which is not a compliment. It means you are just a child on a motorcycle, who is on WAY more bike than they can safely handle, and who also tends to ride like a jackass and get hurt or killed.

That being said...

The best bikes for beginners, and especially younger riders, are sub 600cc single or twin engine motorcycles.
Sport / standards include the ninja 250 ,cbr250, ninja 500, gs500.
Cruisers include the Shadow 600, shadow 750, vulcan 900
Dual sports / enduros are not as popular these days, but a street legal honda xr250, klr250, or classic enduros make great learning tools. Their insurance is the cheapest of the bunch too, which is something you should check before buying any bike.

About your age, keep in mind that until you are 18, you cannot legally own or insure a motorcycle, or any vehicle for that matter, it will have to be your parents bike with you being insured on their policy until you are 18. Just food for thought.

If you are serious about a motorcycle being your primary means of transportation, you should consider what kind of storage comes on the motorcycle you choose. You will need a place to store your helmet, armor jacket, cloves, some basic tools, and any odds and ends you pick up while running errands and such. This is where bikes like the klr250, or klr650 shine. Many second hand ones can be found with weatherproof storage in the form of saddlebags and top cases. I recommend locking luggage, so that your things can be secure when you are away from your bike. Keep in mind you will need a full set of quality rain gear for inclement weather, and you will be caught in inclement weather. Rain hurts above 40mph and I will leave it at that.

Based on what you mentioned, I would recommend a dual sport for your first bike. They are relatively cheap to buy, maintain, insure, and are quite durable. The capability to go on and off road keeps you from getting bored too.

If that isnt your style, a ninja 250 is the most proven starter bike in the united states. Tens of thousands of riders have learned to ride on them and the are one of the most economical bikes on the road.

For your commuting purpose, a cruiser is hard to beat. I used my cruiser with a windshield and saddlebags for 1 year in college and can attest to the practicality of them as your main method of transportation.
