What kind of insurance would a Bicycle Tour Guide need in NYC?

I am in the very early stages of planning a tour guide company that offers themed tours throughout NYC. Any lawyers or insurance people out there? Any idea what kind of insurance I'd need. I'll have a fleet of 15-20 bikes, everyone wearing helmets and operating mainly in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Thanks!

Answer
You are going to have to contact a local insurance broker in your area. The property coverage, the coverage for the bicycles, won't be big problem however the liability exposure of taking people on a bicycle tour of a busy, major metropolitan city is HUGE. No standard insurer is going to look at this (forget State Farm), so you're going to need the services of an insurance broker.

Is it possible to commute on a bike in Manhattan?

I'm moving to New York City for college and I'm wondering if it'd be a good idea to bring my bike to make commuting between classes and such faster. I'm going to Columbia which is right in Manhattan. I know the tires must be 26" or smaller and I've go that covered but I'm wondering if the streets and sidewalks are just too congested to make biking reasonable. Thanks!

Answer
Of course. Manhattan is the smallest boroughs in the city and a small fraction of the population commutes by bike to and from work and school. There are dedicated bike lanes on some of the major avenues, such as Broadway, that you can use. You can even take your bike on board the subway, however, this has to be done during off peak hours.

One thing you need to know about riding a bike in NYC. Drivers here don't sometimes give bikers the right of way. The would either run you down or double park their car or truck, blocking the bike lane. The latter of which is illegal. Therefore, you need to have safety equipment on you bike. For example, reflector, lights, good brakes and a horn (not a loud one, but one that people can hear when). You need to have a helmet and reflected vest, which is recommend for safety sakes.

All these item can be found at any bike shop or sporting goods store in the city.

I hope this information is very helpful.

Good luck
