If anyone's still awake... I was just reading this list of "top 10 parenting practices that are now taboo" that includes car seats, leaving a child unattended, staying out till the streetlights come on, smoking while pregnant.....
http://www.mom365.com/slideshows/07232013-past-parenting-practices-that-are-now-taboo?utm_source=edit+email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=edit+email+7/25

and it got me wondering, in 15-30 years when our kids are raising kids, what will their list look like?
What parenting practice do you think will become 'taboo'?

Answer
Don't mind me if I go through this list...

#1, leaving baby in the car... My mom never left us in a car alone until we were old enough to open the door ourselves and trusted to be alone, about 8+. And mind you, she was a mom of the 50's, we were her last... it was NEVER acceptable.

#2, they still recommend heavy smokers don't quit all at once because it's too stressful for mother and baby. There's this old movie where the woman finds out this other woman is pregnant by her dead husband and she convinces the woman to give her the baby, and then helps take care of her during the pregnancy (not nearly as creepy as it sounds at first.) Among the list of 'doctor recommends' pregnancy care was NO SMOKING. That was in the 40's.

#3, Walking alone... granted that one, maybe. For me and my sister we walked in groups and it was 1/2 a mile with a crossing guard for the big roads. No one was allowed to walk alone until you were 8-10, and my husband grew up in a small town and remembers similar rules. My daughter's asked when she can walk to school alone (we can see the school from our house...) and I've told her maybe at 8-10.

#4, Free range kids... agreed. My dad tells the story of when he was 2-3 and his mom couldn't find him to the point the whole neighborhood was going nuts. Turned out he fell asleep among the pigs and his red hair blended in.

#5, actually the new rule is that they need to be at least 2 or as long as they fit rear-facing... again, this is depending on the person. Even today I know people who could care less if the kids are in appropriate seats.

#6, Again, from 28 years old and younger they all rode in car seats.

#7, er... yeah, my dad would have tarred me if I tried to sit on his lap while he was driving.

#8, Oh yeah, the bike helmets. Egads I fight with my parents about that now even. :D

#9, Guess I missed that one growing up with non-smokers. Yay Mormons!

#10, Yup. My mom remembers starting solids from day 2. How about this one! My sister remembers that if I wasn't particularly hungry for the breast they'd give me watered down jello shots (minus the alcohol of course) to peak my interest, then feed me. My jaw dropped.

Okay, so what will the future hold?

-turning kids forward before 4. The research is there. I fully expect kids of the future to either rear-face until at least 4, or entire seats to be turned around subway style, and they'll cringe at the people who turned them forward at 1 or even 2.

-the extreme 'no solids until a year' folks. My 7 month old is crawling now and today she got her sister's mac&cheese and buried her face in it, shoveling it in as fast as she could before we caught her. When kids naturally are feeding themselves, keeping them from solids is silly.

-formula. I expect it to be gone in 20 years. Not through breastfeeding but through genetically engineered cows who will produce a breastmilk equivalent that will be nearly identical. Or we may find a way to make an artificial breast or something that will produce or even create mammary tissue where there's not enough making sure everyone has an ample supply. I just have hope of a formula-free future.

-the early reading folks. The more research that's done and the more stressed this generation becomes I think we'll see more of a turning back towards "read to your kids, but don't push them to read until 7." Here's hoping anyway.

-technology. I'm not sure if it will go towards more or less in 20 years. But it kind of bothers me to see how many 2 year olds can't put together a puzzle but can run an app or even buy a car from their parent's phones.

-No more lap babies on airplanes.

-schools will feed every child free of charge breakfast and lunch on weekdays even over the summer. No I don't think that's a great thing, but it's heading that way. The idea of parents feeding breakfast and lunch will be a bit absurd.

-augmented reality playgrounds.

-computer clothing, not sure how to explain this one but the kid will wear an undershirt or undies that monitors their heartrate, location, hydration, and temperature. If something goes off, the parent will be alerted, if it's going nuts and no one is responding then emergency crews will be alerted. We're THIS close to this technology.

Baby riding a snowmobile?

My husband recently got a promotion at his job that we can't afford to decline, but in order to accept it we have to move. The house that we decided on is more remote than we'd like but it was the best/reasonable option we could find, during the winter it's only assessable by snowmobile and that's fine for the two of us but what about our baby? We have a 7 month old daughter and I wouldn't know how to transport her, some say she's still little enough that I could put her in a baby carrier on my front/back and do it that way and then when she gets older about 1-2 I could purchase a helmet plus a trailer/chariot like the ones for kids that attach to a bike. The carrier one I'm not to keen on and the chariot sounds like a better idea, anybody else in this situation what do you suggest?

Answer
great adventure while your young/get the carrier for the front
