best bike helmets for big heads image
Mike
I know the process of taking lessons and getting my permit and all that. But I'm wondering what I should look for when it comes time to browsing for bikes. I've never owned one before, but I've ridden one a few times. I'm still very new to it. What type of features should I look for in a beginner bike? I would like to keep the price below 10k$. Any suggestions on bikes that you like?
Answer
If you're going to ride a dirt bike, go for one that fits you. A lot of dirt bikes are tall, so that they have a lot of suspension travel. If you're a short person, it can be hard to keep a foot on the ground and keep you from tipping over. Unless you're a heavy person, don't necessarily go for the biggest bike you can find or afford. It's easy to let too much power get away from you. So think about something in the 175-400 CC range, and try a couple of different size bikes before you decide.
If you're going street, think about how you want to use it. Will you ride around town, or commute to work, or do you want to go cross country? A small bike - say under 300 CC - will be fine on side streets, but might be underpowered for state highways, and it's too small for an interstate. But again - a big bike can get away from you in a heartbeat, and you can become street pizza before you can say "What was that?". So find something midsized - 350-500, maybe? - to learn on, and get good at, and then consider trading up. You will lose some money this way, but you will learn better skills, and you will stand a good chance of surviving the first season.
Finally, get good accessories - gloves, boots, jacket, and above all, a good helmet. The other stuff can save you some scuffs and scrapes. A good helmet can save your life. The rule of thumb that I was taught is, "Put a $10 helmet on a $10 head". If you want to go cheap on a helmet, what does that say about your head, Mike?
If you're still not convinced, then before you buy a helmet, do a search on "closed head injuries", and spend some time reading and researching.

eyesore
I havent measured my head but its pretty big, i can barely fit in the graduation cap that was one size fits all. The model is named Bell Fraction Multi-Sport Helmet size:large, and can be found on amazon, if anyone can recommend another helmet that is cheap and big, feel free to answer. Thanks!

It is NOT just the size but the shape too! Each company seems to make a helmet for a different shaped head. There are some helmets I cannot even put in .... they hurt so much! So go to your local bike shops and try on several different models from several different companies. Get one that has lots of air vents and is comfortable!
